Vehicle and Bicycle auction this Sunday in North Platte

&nbsp; The North Platte Police Department is teaming up with the National Highway Safety Traffic Safety Administration to remind drivers to designate a sober driver or use ride share if they are planning on celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with alcohol. 

 According to NHSTA, forty-seven people were killed in drunk driving crashes in 2021, nation-wide.  Additional officers from the North Platte Police Department will be on the street during the St. Patrick’s Day celebration and their primary focus will be taking impaired drivers off the road.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lincoln, Neb., March. 12, 2024 —The Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln has announced the recipients of scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year. The one-time scholarships will be awarded to over 100 students totaling $189,000 for the ensuing academic year.

The Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program was established in 2010 as a gift from the Paul and Virginia Engler Foundation. The mission of the program is to embolden people on the courageous pursuit of their purpose through the art and practice of entrepreneurship. The program offers an academic minor while serving as an intersection in which students from a diverse array of majors and business interests can come together in pursuit of the American Dream.&nbsp;

Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program announces 2024-25 scholarship recipients

Nebraska's Natural Resources Districts

LINCOLN, Nebraska&nbsp;– The voting members of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts (NARD) Board of Directors elected new officers during their board meeting March 11, 2024.

The NARD Board consists of representatives from each of Nebraska’s 23 Natural Resources Districts (NRDs). The board meets five times throughout the year and helps guide the association and NRDs in decision making that protects lives, property and the future of Nebraska’s natural resources. The NARD Risk Pool Board governs the health insurance program for NRD employees.

Marty Graff, NARD President (Ainsworth, Nebraska)Marty Graff of the Middle Niobrara NRD was elected president of the NARD Board and NARD Risk Pool Board. Graff has served on the Middle Niobrara NRD Board 29 years and on the NARD boards since 2018. He farms with his wife, Brenda, and sons near Ainsworth. Off the farm, Graff serves on the East Woodlawn Cemetery Board (Johnstown, Nebraska) and is active in the Elks Club helping with youth baseball and wrestling.

Ryan Reuter, NARD Vice President (Minatare, Nebraska)Ryan Reuter of the North Platte NRD was elected vice president of the NARD Board and NARD Risk Pool Board. Reuter, a sales manager with Betaseed and ACH Seeds, has served on the North Platte NRD and NARD boards since 2018. Reuter and his wife Amie have two daughters, Avery and Addison.

Mason Hoffman, NARD Secretary-Treasurer (Juniata, Nebraska)Mason Hoffman of the Little Blue NRD was elected secretary-treasurer of the NARD Board and NARD Risk Pool Board. He farms outside of Hastings and has served on the Little Blue NRD Board since 2016 and on the NARD boards since 2021. Hoffman and his wife Michelle&nbsp;have three children, Mara, Natalie and Theodore (Tate).

Dr. Orval Gigstad, NARD Past President (Syracuse, Nebraska)Dr. Orval Gigstad from the Nemaha NRD serves as past president of the NARD Board and NARD Risk Pool Board. He served as president from 2022-2024 and has been on the boards since 1996. Gigstad has served on the Nemaha NRD Board since 1993 and serves as chair of the National Association of Conservation Districts Northern Plains Region. A practicing veterinarian for more than 45 years, he operates the Arbor Valley Animal Clinic in Syracuse. Gigstad and his wife Carolyn have two children, Grady and Amber, and grandchildren, Quincy and Amelia.

In addition to the president, vice president, secretary-treasurer and past president, the NARD Board executive committee includes Terry Martin, Legislative Committee chair representing the Upper Republican NRD, and Bob Hilger, Information and Education Committee chair representing the Lower Platte North NRD.

Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts Managers CommitteeOn March 6, the NRD managers elected J. Scott Sobotka, general manager of the Lower Big Blue NRD, as chair of the Managers Committee; and Wade Ellwanger, general manager of the Lower Niobrara NRD, as vice-chair of the Managers Committee.

J. Scott Sobotka, Lower Big Blue NRDJ. Scott Sobotka was promoted to general manager of the Lower Big Blue NRD in January 2022. He has served the district for 22 years as a land resources specialist and most recently as assistant manager. Sobotka lives near Tobias with his wife Wendee and daughters Jaicee, Josiee and Jaylee.

Wade Ellwanger, Lower Niobrara NRDWade Ellwanger was promoted to general manager of the Lower Niobrara NRD in March 2023. Prior to his promotion, he served the district for six years as a water resources coordinator and assistant manager. He also has more than 20 years of production management experience in the ag industry. Ellwanger earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is a Class IX graduate of the Nebraska Water Leaders Academy.&nbsp;He is a native of Butte, Nebraska, and has six children and six grandchildren.

The Managers Committee includes managers from all 23 Natural Resources Districts. The committee meets five times a year to coordinate NRD activities with state and federal agencies, conservation partners and other parties to protect Nebraska’s natural resources.

 NARD Elects 2024 Officers

&nbsp;(GRAND ISLAND, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have conducted alcohol compliance checks in Hall and Red Willow Counties in recent weeks.

During the afternoon and evening hours of Thursday, February 29, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Hall County. This project was supported by grant #2447 from Tobacco Free Hall County.

In total, 10 businesses were checked. Two of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 80%. One business failed to check the minor’s ID.

The businesses that failed the compliance checks were:

During the afternoon and evening hours of Sunday, March 10, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Red Willow County. This project was supported in whole or part by grant #93.959 under the SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Region II Human Services, and the Nebraska DHHS Division of Behavioral Health.

In total, 11 businesses were checked. None of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 100%. Each of the businesses checked the minor’s ID.

The businesses included convenience stores, grocery stores, hotels, restaurants, liquor stores, and bars.

Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor.

None of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 100%. Each of the businesses checked the minor’s ID.The businesses included convenience stores, grocery stores, hotels, restaurants, liquor stores, and bars.Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor.

Southwest Nebraska residents over the age of 45 may be eligible for free colon cancer screening services through Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD).&nbsp; Not counting some kinds of skin cancer, colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in men and women.&nbsp; It is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.&nbsp; In the last 5 years over 1,600 people died from colon cancer disease in Nebraska, and there was an average of 900 new cases of colon cancer diagnosed in the state each year, including individuals younger than age 50.&nbsp;

“We want to make a difference in the lives of our community members, their families, and friends,” said Paula Wimer of SWNPHD.&nbsp; “That is why we are offering free FIT Kits to Nebraska residents who are 45 to 74 years old, as a part of Colon Cancer Awareness Month.&nbsp; Community members can call our office and get their at-home testing kit.&nbsp; When colorectal cancer is found early and treated, the five-year survival rate is as high as 90%.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

FIT Kits have been found to be effective, easy to do (within 5 minutes time), there are no dietary restrictions, and no liquids or prep to take prior to the test. Simply follow the directions on the kit, then mail the kit in the enclosed envelope to the lab for testing. The test results will be mailed back to you to share with your doctor.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“More Nebraskans are receiving colon cancer screenings than ever before which is encouraging,” said Wimer. “But the state’s colon cancer incidence rate is higher than the national rate. There’s still more progress to be made and more lives to be saved.”&nbsp;

McCook, Ne - On March 11th 2024 McCook dispatch began receiving calls of an explosion south of McCook along Hwy 83. Red Willow Western Fire and McCook Fire and Ambulance as well as Red Willow County Sheriff's Office responded.&nbsp;

The explosion was reported by neighbors as they couldn't determine the source. It was discovered that a Propane tank had exploded. An individual was apparently in the process of converting the empty tank into a smoker. It appeared that the subject took precautions to use water inside the tank to displace the vapor but was apparently insufficient to displace all the vapors. While attempting to cut the tank with a cutter torch the vapors were ignited causing the explosion. He was wearing a respirator at the time and had taken other precautions as well.&nbsp;

There was a delay in discovering the victim of several minutes as the callers didn't know exactly where the explosion had occurred. The original caller contacted their neighbors, who responded to their residence and discovered the victim. He is the 24 year old son of that neighbor.&nbsp;

On EMS and Fire's arrival a trauma code was initiated with McCook Community Hospital and arrangements were made to transfer the victim by air to a higher level of care, Good Samaritan Kearney.&nbsp;

According to Red Willow County Sheriff Keving Darling "I have spoken with the family and will not release the name of the victim until they clear it. The injuries are serious, additional information about his condition will be released upon families approval."

As part of a $40 billion investment strategy to upgrade and improve the Postal processing, transportation, and delivery networks, the U.S. Postal Service announced that it is conducting an evaluation of current operations and potential future uses of its North Platte Processing and Distribution Center (P&amp;DC) facility in North Platte NE.&nbsp;

The USPS ten-year Delivering for America (DFA) plan includes initiatives to improve organizational and operational processes and actively make the Postal Service an efficient, high-performing, world class logistics and delivery provider.  Improvements to Postal operations will enhance the level of service provided to the public; drive innovation and enable a broader array of postal products and services; enhance organizational competitiveness; improve efficiency and lower the cost to operate; and provide better workplaces and careers for Postal Service employees.

This specific facility review will inform the best allocation of resources and strategies to improve customer service and to achieve significant cost savings through operational precision and efficiency.  Business mail entry, Post Office, station, and branch retail services are not expected to change, and delivery services will be unaffected throughout this review.&nbsp;The evaluation is a first step in the Postal Service review and investment process in this facility and will not result in this facility’s closure or career employee layoffs.

Public input will be considered as part of the review. A public meeting will be held to share the initial results of the study and to allow members of the local community to provide their additional feedback and perspectives on the Initial Findings of the MPFR. The meeting will be held on Thursday, March 28, at 6:00 PM at the Sandhills Convention Center, 2102 S Jeffers St, North Platte NE 69101. A summary of the MPFR will be posted on about.usps.com at least one week prior to the public input meeting.

The Postal Service is investing heavily in operations as it moves to modernize the nation’s postal network, improve customer service, and achieve the organization’s goal of 95% on-time delivery across all mail products.

The initial results of the facility review support the business case for keeping the North Platte P&amp;DC open and modernizing the facility as a Local Processing Center (LPC) with simplified processes and standardized layouts. The North Platte LPC will be a critical node to the unified movement of mail and packages across the regional processing and transportation ecosystem. The facility will offer expanded and streamlined package processing capabilities in the local market and new workplace amenities for USPS employees. Additionally, the business case supports transferring some mail processing operations to the Denver P&amp;DC. 

The North Platte P&amp;DC will remain open and will be modernized. It will be repositioned as a Local Processing Center for destinating mail processing. It is expected that this facility will be a critical node to the unified movement of mail and packages across the regional processing and transportation ecosystem.   

Retail and other services currently available at the North Platte P&amp;DC will not change.

Business mail acceptance will remain the same. 

A local postmark will continue to be available at retail post offices.

Delivery times of mail to residence and businesses should not change throughout this review.

Mailers who presort mail will continue to receive appropriate postage discounts.

&nbsp; Ranchers and cattle producers interested in learning about the latest research in range livestock production from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln are encouraged to register for the 2024 Nebraska Ranch Practicum offered by Nebraska Extension.

The practicum will be held during eight sessions over the course of three seasons to cover the production cycle of livestock and forage resources. Participants will learn about a variety of topics, including the effective use of decision support tools to evaluate management and marketing alternatives, plant identification, range condition and grazing strategies, wildlife management, evaluation of cow body condition scores, and beef cattle production systems.

The practicum is June 4 and 5, July 10, September 4 and 5, and November 7, 2024; and January 7 and 8, 2025. Classroom activities will open and close the practicum in North Platte with the remainder of the classes conducted at the University of Nebraska's Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory, a working ranch with education and research facilities, near Whitman.

The registration fee is $675. The fee for a spouse is an additional $350. Registration covers educational materials, noon meals and breaks. Participants are responsible for travel and lodging expenses. The practicum can count for college or continuing education credit.&nbsp;&nbsp;To register, submit a completed application and registration fee by May 3. Applications will not be accepted after that date. Enrollment is limited to 35 participants. Applicants will be notified of their status no later than May 20. Lincoln County Office of Emergency Management, and local first responders, will be working with the 72nd Civil Support Team in the local communities to conduct joint Hazmat and Law Enforcement exercises. The purpose of these exercises is to establish and refine valuable partnerships between local, state, and federal agencies in responding to incidents involving hazardous materials that may overwhelm local resources.

The exercises will be conducted on the 12th and 14th of March 2024, with responders participating in the North Platte communities. The major activities are intentionally planned to be conducted away from heavily populated areas, in the interest of safety, but some aspects may be noticed within the city.

Residents are advised there may be responder vehicle movement and operational response actions that may pose a danger to unsuspecting observers and are therefore asked to refrain from entering areas marked "Exercise in Progress" or “TRAINING” in the interest of uninterrupted training activity and for their own personal safety.

These exercises have been coordinated with the Lincoln County Office of Emergency Management and local first responder. PSA about Exercise trainings occurring in North Platte

Members of the Voiture Locale #1068 Forty and Eight Military Organization met the chapter’s scholarship recipients last week. The reception happened during a Forty and Eight Scholarship Dinner in Paxton on Tuesday.

The Forty and Eight chapter established a military nurses scholarship through the North Platte Community College Foundation in recognition of the hard work of nursing professionals and to encourage the next generation of nurses to complete their education.

This year the recipients of the $500 scholarship were NPCC students Brittney Douglass and Sarah Caudy, both of North Platte.

The Forty and Eight was formed in 1920 by American Legionnaires as an honor society, and from its earliest days, has been committed to charitable aims.

The name Forty and Eight is derived from the capacity of box cars in France during World War I, which could hold either 40 men or eight horses.

The Forty and Eight’s purpose is to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution, promote the well-being of veterans, their widows, widowers and orphans and to actively participate in selected charitable endeavors.

The reception happened during a Forty and Eight Scholarship Dinner in Paxton on Tuesday.The Forty and Eight chapter established a military nurses scholarship through the North Platte Community College Foundation in recognition of the hard work of nursing professionals and to encourage the next generation of nurses to complete their education.This year the recipients of the $500 scholarship were NPCC students Brittney Douglass and Sarah Caudy, both of North Platte.The Forty and Eight was formed in 1920 by American Legionnaires as an honor society, and from its earliest days, has been committed to charitable aims.The name Forty and Eight is derived from the capacity of box cars in France during World War I, which could hold either 40 men or eight horses.The Forty and Eight’s purpose is to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution, promote the well-being of veterans, their widows, widowers and orphans and to actively participate in selected charitable endeavors.

Vanderheiden joined McPherson County Schools in July of 2020. From the simplicity of rural Nebraska to the hustle and bustle of city life, Jessica Epting is proof that humble beginnings are sometimes the best kind.

Epting is a visual information specialist at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the largest library in the world, where her days are full of creativity and intrigue. It’s a place in life that she began working toward at a young age – she just didn’t know it at the time.

“I had a very different trajectory for my life when I was growing up,” Epting said. “But I think if young me could have seen where I am now, she would have been pleased.”

Epting was raised in North Platte, Neb., a community of just under 24,000 people, nestled between twin rivers and flanked by sandhills and cornfields.

One of nine children, Epting was homeschooled from second grade on. Homeschooling allowed her to explore and focus on things she was passionate about such as artistic expression.

“I enjoyed being creative growing up – sewing, knitting, crocheting, writing poems and constantly painting my bedroom walls,” Epting said. “My mom often tells the story of me moving around the same flower in the Microsoft Paint program in the middle of the night, planning a future design.”

Before she graduated, she started researching interior design and fashion design colleges.

“At that time, I didn’t even know what graphic design was,” Epting said. “My mom came to me one day with information about a new program Mid-Plains Community College, our local community college, was starting. It was graphic design and, after looking through the information, I realized that was what I’d been looking for.”

Because her mother, Dot Epting, worked at MPCC, Jessica was already familiar with the school. She had taken some dual credit classes through MPCC in high school, so it was an easy decision to enroll full-time following her graduation in 2006.

She had taken some dual credit classes through MPCC in high school, so it was an easy decision to enroll full-time following her graduation in 2006.“I really enjoyed my classes at Mid-Plains,” Jessica said. “I felt like all the stuff I had been creating at home on my own, like designs in Microsoft Paint and other Desktop Publishing software, suddenly had a direction – just at a more advanced level. It was as if everything lined up for me to take those next steps.”She found the small classes sizes and one-on-one instruction to be beneficial in helping her transition from homeschooling to a college setting. In turn, homeschooling proved to be a benefit in terms of her college study habits.“Homeschooling helped me be pretty independent about my studies,” Jessica said. “I could take care of projects myself and didn’t have to be held by the hand. However, I think it would have been a bit overwhelming to enter a university space right away. It also would have been harder to get close to my classmates and instructors in a larger setting, and that’s part of what I loved so much about my college experience.”She immediately appreciated how up to date MPCC was with its computer programs and materials.“There were some things we had in our labs before even the larger universities did,” Jessica said. “I feel like I got a jump-start by going to Mid-Plains.”Jessica took courses from MPCC for three years. When she first started, half of them were in McCook, more than an hour away. Once a week, she would make the drive to take three graphic design classes. The time in between was spent either in labs or taking her little sister to basketball practice across town.“Becky Meyers [graphic design instructor] was very flexible with my schedule, and I appreciated that,” Jessica said. “I had a lot of good instructors at MPCC. I think the most important thing they taught me was how to learn. All the programs I worked with in college are out of date now because technology changes so fast, but I learned how to keep up with technology and about the foundation of design, which is the basis for what I do today.”Upon entering the world of graphic design, Jessica also realized she had an interest in information technology and web design. Back then, those subjects weren’t offered as separate tracks.“We had web design classes like JavaScript, but they weren’t required like they are now,” Jessica said. “Becky recommended them as electives since that’s what I was interested in. Looking back, I’m glad, not only that the college had those classes, but also that I tapped into them because my first job was with MPCC as a web master.”Jessica had already started working in the college’s Public Information and Marketing Department as an intern. After earning associate degrees in both general studies and graphic design in May of 2009 she moved into the area web master role part-time.She became the full-time area lead graphic designer four years later, and in 2013, had assumed both responsibilities to become MPCC’s area web master and graphic designer. Jessica continued her education online in addition to working and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Studies from Bellevue University in 2019.By October of 2020, it was time for her to spread her wings. Jessica accepted a temporary position as a visual information specialist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Georgia before signing on full-time with the Library of Congress in March of 2021.Finding her happy placeThe projects Jessica works on are similar to those she did at MPCC.“I create designs for presentations, brochures and annual reports,” Jessica said. “I also do a lot of promotional art for flyers, social media graphics and billboards to advertise events and exhibits and have done layout, design and book covers for the publishing office.”One of her most memorable projects thus far has been the “Not an Ostrich: And Other Images from America’s Library” photo exhibit publication.<figure>

 </figure>“It was so much fun and featured some really unique, interesting content – some of my favorite photos and some that had never been published before,” Jessica said. “The publishing office produced a book highlighting some of the photography from the exhibit, and I got to create the design.”The past couple of years, Jessica has also had the opportunity to develop ads for the National Book Festival, which unites bestselling authors with thousands of book fans for author talks, panel discussions, autograph signings and other activities.“When I was going to work one morning, I saw one of the ads on the digital screen in the train station, which was pretty cool,” Jessica said. “I’ve created signage for the Great Hall and step and repeat banners for red carpet events.”She’s currently working on a book design for an exhibit that will open this spring, “Collecting Memories: Treasures from the Library of Congress.”“It’s the first exhibit in the new David M. Rubenstein Treasures Gallery opening this June,” Jessica said. “I had the pleasure of designing the book’s interior to compliment the exhibit design. It’s probably my favorite project so far.”One of the items that will be in the exhibit is “The Sounds of Earth,” a gold-plated copper disc that contains sounds and images that portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. NASA produced the recording in 1977 to accompany the Voyager 1 and 2 into outer space.“Another one of the ‘treasures’ is the contents of Abraham Lincoln’s pockets from the day he was assassinated,” Jessica said. “He had two pairs of spectacles, a slightly used handkerchief, a button from his lapel, and ironically, a $5 Confederate bill. There are just so many neat things like that in the exhibit, and I got to be there when the photographer came to captures images for the book.”It's a job that utilizes her skill set well. Many of her duties involve taking information and making it digestible for the public, which is also what she did during her time at MPCC.“That’s basically what I do every day,” Jessica said. “I take these incredible items at the library and present them to the American people, which is who the library is really for. My life has evolved to living in a big city and constantly exploring new things and design really has made this life possible for me. I count that as a blessing.”
