North Platte Community College’s theater department will present “Plan 9 from Outer Space” next month.

The curtain will go up at 7:30 p.m. April 3-6 in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

The play is adapted from the science fiction horror film of the same name from the 1950s that was produced, written and directed by Ed Wood.

The plot focuses on aliens seeking to stop humanity from creating a doomsday weapon that could destroy the universe.

The extraterrestrials come up with “Plan 9,” a scheme to resurrect Earth’s dead. The aliens hope that by causing chaos, humans will listen to them, and if not, there will be no choice but to destroy mankind with zombie armies.

“’Plan 9 from Outer Space,’ is the epitome of ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ cinema,” said NPCC Theater Instructor Ritch Galvan, who will direct the play. “It is an unintentionally hilarious sci-fi ‘thriller’ from anti-genius Ed Wood that is celebrated for its staggering ineptitude. This stage adaption will be part homage and part mockery of the cult classic film.”

Admission for the play is $5 per person. The college’s students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with an ID.

Hershey, Ne - The S.O.S. came via a phone from a friend of Connie Kuhlman (owner of KJ's Boot's and Western Wear in Hershey) around 5:30pm Friday afternoon. "The roof has collapsed at KJ's" the caller said. "Can you come help get some of the inventory out of the store in case the whole ceiling comes down, and can you bring an enclosed trailer?"&nbsp;

The North Platte area had a record snow on Thursday night dropping 19 inches of snow in North Platte according to the National Weather Service in North Platte, Hershey most certainly had well over a foot as well. All that snow was too much for the western stores roof. Kevin Kuhlman, Connie's husband and co-owner had been clearing snow all day, and the last thing he planned to do Friday afternoon was clear the parking lot at KJ's which was closed all day due to the record snowfall. After he had cleared the lot, he went inside for a moment and when he turned the lights on he saw that the southeast side of the buildings ceiling had partially collapsed. Then came the flood of phone calls to friends and family who raced to Hershey with enclosed trailers and moving dolly's and began clearing out the south part of the store, not knowing how stable the roof was at that point.

For about an hour and a half family and friends moved boxes of boots, jeans, straw hats and more to dry areas of the store and to an enclosed trailer. Eventually a portable storage unit came from Sutherland, and it didn't take long before it was also full.&nbsp;

Just after 8pm someone posted a facebook message to the village of Hershey social media page asking for help, and the community did not disappoint.&nbsp;

More than 30 plus people filled KJ's helping move the rest of the inventory to safe places. The Hershey Fire Department also came with members of their volunteer department to help assess the problems in the building and to come up with a temporary plan to stabilize it.&nbsp;

KJ's will be closed over the weekend, but hope to have their doors back open soon after repairs are made.&nbsp;

Road condition update: Highway 30 open, I-80 westbound open, eastbound still closed

North Platte, NE - Several organizations are working together to help sponsor a free conference to provide information about disability services and how to access those services.&nbsp; The Disabilities Resources Conference will be held April 19-20, 2024 at North Platte Bethel Church.&nbsp; Conference presenters will be staff members with PTI (Parent, Training and Information), an organization based in Omaha. The conference is for parents, caregivers, educators, and any agency workers who want to learn more about serving those with disabilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;The schedule each day will have educational sessions in the morning followed by afternoon appointments for persons in need of assistance in completing paperwork. Topics to be presented include:&nbsp; Transition Plans, Applying for Developmental Disability Services, SSI:&nbsp; Social Security Income for a Dependent Adult, and Decision Making Options.&nbsp; The PTI staff will dedicate the afternoon to working one on one with those who need assistance in completing paperwork.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;Since July of 2023, 12 organizations have had representatives involved in Families 1st Partnership hosted discussions to bring more education and support for individuals with disabilities—both adults and families whose children are disabled.&nbsp; Many of these organization representatives along with family members are aware of the challenges in accessing programs that provide continued education for those with a disability.&nbsp; The timing of enrollment to such programs is crucial to ensure support for the individual and the family.&nbsp; This is also an area where families may not have all the information that they need.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Conference sponsors include:&nbsp; North Platte Bethel Church, Thrivent Financial, Hand of Heartland, Families 1st Partnership, and PTI.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - A winter storm rolled into the area yesterday evening and blasted North Platte with snow. The snow began falling just around 5:00pm Thursday and as the evening progressed, the snow came flying done. &nbsp;

According to the National Weather Service, North Platte Office, a new single-day record was shattered when the weather service reported at 6:00am that 17.4" of snow was recorded. The previous record 13.9" that was set on January 18th, 2023.&nbsp;

&nbsp; Nebraska Department of Transportation crews are still clearing roads and travel is not advised.&nbsp;I-80 westbound is still closed from Paxton to Kearney while I-80 eastbound is closed from Sidney to Gothenburg. City of North Platte says sanitation crews will not be out today due to the snow

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) will be offering Vaccines for Children at public clinics in March.&nbsp; Anyone two months of age and older are invited to get their vaccinations. With the recent outbreak of measles in the United States, we encourage all residents to be up to date with their MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine. If you have questions about your vaccination status, call your medical provider or contact SWNPHD at 308-345-4223.

Curtis&nbsp;– Monday, March 11th, 4:30-5:30 pm at Medicine Valley High School.

Trenton-&nbsp;Tuesday, March 19th, 3:30-4:30 pm at Hitchcock County High School library.

Ogallala&nbsp;– every Thursday weekly, 8:00 am-4:00 pm MT, walk-in’s welcome. Also 4:00-6:00 pm MT by appointment only, at 418 N Spruce (across the street from the Methodist Church).

McCook&nbsp;–&nbsp;daily Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:00 pm based upon the nurse availability, at 404 West 10th Street (one block north of Arby’s).

We encourage those interested in vaccination to call to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome, but priority will be given to those with a scheduled appointment.&nbsp;

Vaccines for Children is&nbsp;funded in whole with federal and DHHS funds.&nbsp;Children with no insurance, under-insured, Medicaid, Native American or Native Alaskan qualify for state-funded vaccine. Adults who are uninsured or under-insured may also qualify for state funded vaccine. Call the office for qualifications at 308-345-4223. Both state-funded and private vaccines are available at these clinics.&nbsp; Insurance billing and cash or credit card payment options are available to those who do not qualify for the state-funded vaccine.

From&nbsp;May 4 – 10, 2024, Petty will lead 150 motorcycles across nine states on a seven-day trek, covering more than 2,100 miles in an effort to raise funds and awareness for&nbsp;<a href="http://www.victoryjunction.org/" target="_blank">Victory Junction</a>&nbsp;– a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with serious and chronic medical conditions.

Presented by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.coxautoinc.com/" target="_blank">Cox Automotive</a>, the Ride will kick-off in Deadwood, South Dakota, on Saturday, May 4 and will end in Greensboro, North Carolina on Friday, May 10 with a celebratory homecoming at Victory Junction.&nbsp;Cox Automotive is&nbsp;the world’s largest automotive services and technology provider and is&nbsp;a subsidiary of Cox Enterprises.&nbsp;The&nbsp;company’s brands include Autotrader, Kelley Blue Book and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.manheim.com/" target="_blank">Manheim</a>, which will host breakfast for the Ride at Manheim Indianapolis on Wednesday, May 8.

Some of the highlights include visiting Mount Rushmore National Monument, stopping at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, exploring Churchill Downs – home of the Kentucky Derby, touring the legendary National Corvette Museum, visiting Bristol Motor Speedway, and so much more.

Business Instructor Angie Chittick nominated Clapp for the Student of the Month recognition. She has taught him in several classes.

“I still remember Dustin’s first class,” Chittick said. “You could visibly see his nervousness. As Dustin settled into his first semester, he not only excelled academically but also gained self-confidence. Over the past year, Dustin’s character and strong work ethic have been exemplary. The compassion and assistance that he shows to students who are struggling is remarkable. Dustin goes out of his way to help others. There is no doubt that he will have a very successful and rewarding future.”

Clapp’s most memorable moment at NPCC thus far has been qualifying for the Dean’s List.

He’s a member of the college’s National Society of Leadership and Success organization, and when not focusing on academics, Clapp can be found building and repairing computers.

He’s currently on track to graduate in the spring of 2025, after which, he’s considering opening a diesel repair shop.

Members of Alpha Beta Theta, North Platte Community College’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, are planning a Trash-A-Thon litter pickup to help beautify the community.

Along with the changing of clocks to daylight savings time comes the disruptions in sleep patterns.&nbsp;Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) recommends taking steps to reduce the impact of the time change and get a healthy amount of rest.

Surveys from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine have found that about two-thirds of Americans would prefer to eliminate daylight savings time (DST), and more than half experience tiredness following the switch. Researchers have argued that the time change may have negative consequences for our bodies and minds.

“There is some evidence that changing the clocks increases the possibility of heart attack and stroke,” says Kay Schmidt, Emergency Response Coordinator for SWNPHD. “Not getting enough rest can have a big impact on our bodies and minds.”&nbsp;Lack of sleep can lead to decreases in cardiovascular health, increases in diabetes, obesity, poor mental health, and mental function.

Our internally generated clocks, also known as our circadian rhythms, are synchronized by sunlight. Exposure&nbsp;to more light closer to bedtime makes it harder to fall asleep at our usual bedtime, and can reduce the amount of sleep we are able to get each night.

While these risks may be higher during the warmer months, there are ways to acclimatize to the time change. Acclimation may only take a week or so and will help to combat the negative health effects. Below is a list of suggestions to consider.

“While there is still debate around whether to permanently eliminate the time change, the best course of action is to adopt good sleep habits,” continues Schmidt. “Staying consistent with bedtime rituals and following suggestions for the time change will help you to navigate daylight savings time with ease.”

Proceeds from the Polar Plunge support over 6,000 Nebraskans with intellectual and development disabilities who participate in Special Olympics Nebraska.

&nbsp; WASHINGTON, D.C. –&nbsp;U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) sent a letter to Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Postal Service Louis DeJoy urging him to reconsider the proposed relocation of the North Platte Processing and Distribution Center to Denver, Colorado.&nbsp;

“The North Platte P&amp;DC is a critical hub for USPS delivery in rural Nebraska through its role in processing and distributing mail for all of central and western Nebraska west of Cozad. Relocating its operations to Denver, Colorado would risk further decreasing on-time delivery for my constituents,”&nbsp;wrote Senator Fischer.

In her letter, Senator Fischer called on Postmaster General DeJoy to earnestly work with stakeholders to reevaluate the impact the relocation of the processing and distribution center would have on her constituents.

“Americans rely on USPS to stay connected and access to this vital service cannot be in doubt. While I appreciate the desire of USPS to modernize operations and address its fiscal stability, this must not come at the expense of our communities’ access to timely mail services,”&nbsp;Senator Fischer continued.

On January 10, 2024, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) published a notice that it was conducting a Mail Processing&nbsp;Facility Review of its processing operations at the North Platte Processing and Distribution Center (P&amp;DC). Currently, the North Platte facility processes and distributes all mail in Nebraska west of the city of Cozad to the Wyoming border, north to the South Dakota border, and into portions of northern Kansas.

The Mail Processing Facility Review is considering three options for the North Platte P&amp;DC to determine whether efficiency could be increased and service improved.&nbsp;USPS is reviewing public input as part of the review. If USPS decides to move forward with changing operations at the North Platte P&amp;DC, the agency will hold&nbsp;a public input meeting to collect additional feedback.

Eagle Radio - North Platte/Ogallala receives top honors at annual meeting

The tiny cabin created through the Mid-Plains Community College Ready-to-Work Building Construction program will be sold during a live auction April 20.

The cabin, built by Ogallala High School students at the MPCC Ogallala Campus, is a 16 by 20-foot structure that could be used for a variety of purposes such as a tiny house, shed or workshop.

Its features include Andersen® 100 Series windows, LP® SmartSide® Siding, a Pro-Panel steel roof and a covered front porch with recycled plastic decking and handrails.

The students also built a 3-foot by 6-foot dog house and an 8-foot picnic table, which will be auctioned as well.&nbsp;

The Ready-to-Work program&nbsp;provided an opportunity for the Ogallala students to gain valuable building construction experience while addressing a workforce need for skilled laborers in Keith County.

The students who worked on the project went through safety training and gained basic building construction, résumé and interview skills that will make them more employable in the future. They also earned a Building Construction Technology certificate from MPCC.

Proceeds from the sale of the cabin will be put toward the next Ready-to-Work class.

The cabin, picnic table and dog house can be viewed at the corner of East Fifth and East A streets in Ogallala. Tours of the inside of the cabin will be available during open house events from 4-6 p.m. March 13 and April 14. Individual showings can be arranged through the campus.

The minimum bid for the cabin is $10,000. Absentee bids on the official form will be accepted at the MPCC Ogallala Campus, 512 E. B St. S., in Ogallala, until noon April 19.

The official form can be printed from the college’s website at:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mpcc.edu/community-and-business/tiny-cabin.php" target="_blank">mpcc.edu/community-and-business/tiny-cabin.php</a>&nbsp;and can also be picked up at the MPCC Ogallala Campus. The final auction will go live at 10 a.m. (MT) April 20 at the cabin location. If an absentee bid is the highest submitted, the bidder does not have to be present.

The buyer must provide a $500 nonrefundable payment of the purchase price the day of the sale. Any remaining funds must be paid within seven days of the close of the auction.

No access to or any work to transport the building can take place before the final sale. The building must be moved within 30 days or by May 20, 2024. The buyer will be responsible for all moving costs.&nbsp;

The doghouse and picnic table have no minimum bid and will be sold during the live auction.

The basics of raising backyard chickens will be explained through a new class offered by the Mid-Plains Community College Business and Community Education department.

Rebecca Wrage will teach “Chicken Scratch” from 6-8 p.m. April 11 in Room 209 in the W. W. Wood Building on the college’s North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, in North Platte. The fee is $10.

Whether or not chickens are legal to have in a particular neighborhood, the supplies needed to get started and how to determine the size of a chicken coop are just some of the many topics that will be discussed.

<a>Wrage will also explain how to protect chickens from predators, what breeds and food are best for egg production, the hardiest breeds per region, how to de-worm naturally, if a rooster is needed, how to store fresh eggs and how to care for baby chicks.</a>

MPCC to offer class about poultry farming

(North Platte, Nebraska, March 5, 2024) – Now in its 15th year, the Nebraska Passport Program continues to be a popular way to invite visitors to explore Nebraska’s unique tourist destinations. 70 places have been chosen as Passport stops throughout the state after going through an application process. This year, two of the stops are in Lincoln County. Being a passport stop will benefit, not only the selected business, but the entire community as the visitors come for the Passport Program and stay to experience the entire community.&nbsp;

The first Lincoln County stop is CR Rustic Antique Mall. CR Rustic is located in the Historical Canteen District&nbsp; and opened in August of 2020. At CR Rustic, they have a large range of products including antiques,&nbsp; refurbished goods, candles, paint, crafts, fresh flowers, and boutique items. With over 20 vendors, there is a&nbsp; great selection of custom-made products. CR Rustic is open Tuesday-Friday from 10:30am-6:00pm and on&nbsp; Saturdays from 11:30am-6:00pm. They are located at 108 E 5th St, North Platte.&nbsp;

The second stop in our area is Feather River Vineyard. Located in the hills of the Southern Platte Valley, just&nbsp; south of North Platte, Feather River has been offering a variety of wines that reflect the character and history&nbsp; of the area’s geologic heritage since 2007. River and windblown sediment have created the mineral-rich soil of&nbsp; the region that nurtures vines that produce grapes of a distinctive quality. Feather River is one of Nebraska's&nbsp; largest vineyards and planted their first vines in 2001. The 37-acre vineyard includes a bevy of grape varieties&nbsp; including Edelwiess, Seyval, Reisling, LaCrosse, St Pipen, Marechal Foch, Frontanec, St. Croix, and Marguette. Feather River Vineyard will be open daily during the Passport program from 1:00pm-6:00pm, and until 8:00pm&nbsp; on Fridays. They are located at 5700 SE State Farm Rd, North Platte.&nbsp;

The 2023 Nebraska Passport had 1,014 participants visit all 70 stops. In 2019, the Passport program generated $23.7 million in traveler spending. The 2024 Nebraska Passport program will run from May 1st through September 30th, 2024. At each Passport stop participants visit they will receive a stamp, either in a Nebraska Passport booklet or a digital stamp on the Nebraska Passport app. Participants then turn in their stamps and receive prizes. 2024 Nebraska Passport booklets are available for pre-order at NebraskaPassport.com or you can download the app starting May 1, 2024, by searching for “Nebraska Passport 2024” in your app store for both iPhones and Androids.
