Sustainable Beef LLC is pleased to announce the hiring of Ryan Wagnon as General Manager for our new beef processing plant in North Platte, Nebraska.&nbsp; Ryan is a graduate of Oklahoma Panhandle State University and has spent his 22 year career working in beef processing facilities.&nbsp;

Bill Rupp, Sustainable Beef Board Member, adds, “Ryan has a very well rounded background and I am particularly impressed with his strong, people oriented, leadership style.”&nbsp;

Sustainable Beef LLC will hire other senior management including the areas of accounting, human resources, plant maintenance, plant operations, purchasing and safety during 2024, with hiring planned for line workers in 2025.&nbsp;

Ryan and Chassidy will be relocating their family to North Platte this summer as we work toward our expected opening in the summer of 2025.&nbsp;

Sustainable Beef LLC was formed in the summer of 2020 to construct a $400 million plant in North Platte, Nebraska which will employ over 800 employees.&nbsp; A small group of cattlemen and local investors are partnering with Walmart to connect the various points of beef supply chain together to efficiently provide a food safe and secure beef supply that satisfies consumer expectations.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We are creating a unique cooperative model where all aspects of the beef supply chain work together in doing what is best for all parties involved” said David Briggs, CEO.&nbsp;

Local business owners and workers are invited to complete a survey on&nbsp;transportation needs.&nbsp;This is one more step towards getting community feedback on how residents are getting where they need to go.&nbsp;Several local organizations and community leaders have spent the last seven months taking a close look at local transportation services, transportation models in other communities, local needs, and challenges.&nbsp;

They have received input from social service organizations, medical facilities, schools, Enterprise VanPool, and NE Department of Transportation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Transportation needs have long been a concern in the area.&nbsp;It can be the main barrier to maintaining employment, meeting school attendance requirements, and&nbsp;running errands for basic living needs.&nbsp;It is also a problem that has few quick fixes.&nbsp;The group intends to be proactive in looking for solutions so the needs of a growing population can be met efficiently and effectively.&nbsp;

The business can provide the employee survey to their employees.&nbsp;The projected summary of survey results is March 29th.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with 4-H'er Halzee Etherton and 4-H Development Extension Educator Caitlyn Jacobson about the 4-H Barn Quilts project.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - 4-H is America's largest youth development program across the United States that helps learn skills that will last a lifetime. The age requirement for 4-H is the ages of 8-18. There are many different categories that 4-H'ers can participate in during their time in the program including barn quilts. Barn quilts are unique as they're woodwork, not a blanket.&nbsp;

Hazlee Etherton, a 7th grader at Hershey Public Schools has been involved with 4-H for 6 years. Last summer, she took home the blue ribbon for barn quilts and already has in mind what she wants to use for her project for this upcoming fair season. Etherton is also involved with many different categories in 4-H.&nbsp;

Mega Millions® Jackpot Increased for Friday Drawing

MARCH 15, 2024 (LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;—&nbsp; Don’t rely on luck to make roadways safe this St. Patrick’s Day. Nebraska State Troopers will be on patrol for impaired drivers this weekend as part of a nationwide enforcement effort for St. Patrick’s Day.

“Impaired driving is dangerous for everyone,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “If your St. Patrick’s Day plans involve alcohol, have a plan in place to make it home safely.”

Troopers will be working overtime across the state this St. Patrick’s Day. Troopers will be performing high-visibility patrols throughout the state from Saturday evening through Monday morning as part of this operation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest times on roadways across the country. So far in 2024, troopers have made 241 arrests for driving under the influence. That compares to 190 DUI arrests during the same period in 2023.

Here are some tips to avoid driving impaired this St. Patrick’s Day or any time of the year:

Nebraska State Patrol Encourages Safe Driving This St. Patrick’s Day   

(North Platte, Nebraska, March 14, 2024) – Each spring, something magical happens in the heart of the Great Plains. More than 80 percent of the world’s population of sandhill cranes converge on Nebraska’s Platte River valley—a critical sliver of habitat in North America’s Central Flyway. During this time approximately 400,000 of these Sandhill Cranes will spend that time in the North Platte and Lincoln County area.&nbsp;

At sunrise and sunset, the North Platte River is the perfect place to view the spectacular concentrations of sandhill cranes as they awake and take off for another day of feeding and dancing, or as they come to strategically roost for the night. The City of North Platte had previously installed a viewing wall along the riverbank at their public viewing location at 301 W 18th Street in North Platte. This location is used by both visitors and locals alike and has gained more traffic in recent years. With this spot growing in popularity, the City of North Platte felt that expanding the viewing opportunities there would be beneficial.

After looking at several funding sources, they decided to apply for a Watchable Wildlife Grant. These grants are funded through the Wildlife Conservation Fund of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to help develop wildlife-viewing and nature-based experiences in Nebraska. In collaboration with Visit North Platte, the City of North Platte was successfully granted the funding and was able to add two brand new, fully enclosed viewing blinds. Each blind has two windows facing the river that offer stunning views of the Sandhill Cranes.&nbsp;

For those looking to use the area, please read the etiquette signage at the location and please be respectful of the birds while you are there. For sunrise viewing, you will need to arrive while it is still completely dark out, so it is recommended that you first visit the location in daylight to familiarize yourself with the walking path and the blinds. For sunset viewing, please arrive before sunset begins.

More than 80 percent of the world’s population of sandhill cranes converge on Nebraska’s Platte River valley—a critical sliver of habitat in North America’s Central Flyway. During this time approximately 400,000 of these Sandhill Cranes will spend that time in the North Platte and Lincoln County area.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>At sunrise and sunset, the North Platte River is the perfect place to view the spectacular concentrations of sandhill cranes as they awake and take off for another day of feeding and dancing, or as they come to strategically roost for the night. The City of North Platte had previously installed a viewing wall along the riverbank at their public viewing location at 301 W 18th Street in North Platte. This location is used by both visitors and locals alike and has gained more traffic in recent years. With this spot growing in popularity, the City of North Platte felt that expanding the viewing opportunities there would be beneficial.<figure>

 </figure>After looking at several funding sources, they decided to apply for a Watchable Wildlife Grant. These grants are funded through the Wildlife Conservation Fund of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to help develop wildlife-viewing and nature-based experiences in Nebraska. In collaboration with Visit North Platte, the City of North Platte was successfully granted the funding and was able to add two brand new, fully enclosed viewing blinds. Each blind has two windows facing the river that offer stunning views of the Sandhill Cranes.&nbsp;For those looking to use the area, please read the etiquette signage at the location and please be respectful of the birds while you are there. For sunrise viewing, you will need to arrive while it is still completely dark out, so it is recommended that you first visit the location in daylight to familiarize yourself with the walking path and the blinds. For sunset viewing, please arrive before sunset begins.

Simons Contractors, Inc. of North Platte is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge replacement, grading, asphalt overlay, earth shoulder construction, and seeding. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions, temporary traffic signals for bridge work, and pilot car and flaggers. A 10-foot width restriction will be in effect at the bridges for the duration of the project. Anticipated completion is June 2025.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Work will consist of full depth concrete replacement of I-80 in both directions of travel, four bridge widening and re-decks, and a box culvert will be built to replace two bridges. At US-183 and the Elm Creek Interchange there will be concrete repair work, and the Elm Creek ramps will be replaced up to the gore.

Traffic will be maintained in a head-to-head configuration using temporary traffic control devices in the westbound lanes while the eastbound lanes are being constructed during the 2024 construction season and vice versa during the 2025 construction season. A 12-foot width restriction will be enforced throughout the project. Anticipated completion is Spring 2026.

Road work to resume on I-80 near Lexington, bridge work to begin in Elm Creek

North Platte Community College hosted 290 students from 13 area middle schools Thursday as part of the Expanding Your Horizons Conference.

The students spent the day listening to speakers and participating in hands-on-activities designed to generate interest in a variety of fields, including horticulture, computer coding, physical therapy, outdoor education, pharmacy and kitchen bath and design among others. Sessions were led by volunteers from 31 businesses.

Lori Bergman, owner of Double Dips Ice Creamery, in North Platte, served as the keynote speaker. She encouraged the students to believe in themselves and follow their passions.

“Always know that you are capable of anything you set your mind to,” Bergman said. “No matter what your dream is, I urge you to take the risk. If your dream doesn’t scare you - you aren’t dreaming big enough.”

The following schools were represented: Adams, Broken Bow, Callaway, Eustis-Farnam, Gothenburg, McCook, Mullen, Ogallala, Paxton, St. Pat’s, Sutherland, Wallace and Wauneta-Palisade.

Scammers have become sophisticated at sending messages that look like official documents from the IRS, state agencies, state officials, tax software companies, or your own tax professional. They may copy language, logos, or fonts from the IRS to make it look as legitimate as possible. These scammers are seeking to steal personally identifiable information from your official tax documents.

Popular tax scams may include messages about tax refunds or statements. They may contain a copy of the official IRS seal, leading you to click on links to check your “tax refund statement” or “fill out a form to get your refund.” These links may lead to identity theft or malware on your devices that could give scammers further access to your personal data.

It is important to note that the IRS will not contact you by email, text message, or social media to get your personal information. Take extreme caution if you get an unsolicited contact about your tax information.

Another frequently reported tax scam involves imposters pretending they’re calling from the IRS. They claim that you owe taxes and demand you pay right now, usually through payment methods that are hard to reverse, like a gift card, prepaid debit card, wire transfer, or cashier’s check.

Even if your caller ID shows it is the IRS calling, it could be a scammer. The IRS will always contact you by mail first. The IRS will also not require a specific type of payment.

Attorney General Hilgers and State Treasurer Briese Warn Nebraskans about Tax-Related Scams

Lincoln, NE – March 14, 2024 – Two big jackpots are up for grabs in the next Mega Millions® and Powerball® drawings. Because of these high jackpots, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to set spending and time limits.

A string of drawings without a jackpot winner has grown the estimated Mega Millions jackpot to its highest level since December 2023. There have been 27 consecutive drawings since December 12 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Friday, March 15 drawing to $792 million or $381.8 million with the cash option selected. This is the 6th largest jackpot in Mega Millions history.

Powerball has also seen its jackpot grow over the last few months. There have been 31 drawings since January 3 without a jackpot winner. The estimated jackpot for the Saturday, March 16 drawing is $600 million or $293.4 million with the cash option selected.

The dual jackpot runs have produced some large Nebraska winners.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot on record occurred in August 2023 when one winner in Florida won a $1.602 billion jackpot. The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.040 billion jackpot.

Mega Millions® Jackpot 6th Largest Ever

STATEWIDE-&nbsp;Over 150 volunteers will be mobilizing in communities across the state on Saturday to continue fighting for medical cannabis access. Supporters are hosting over 50 petition signing events in over 30 cities and towns on Saturday, March 16th. They are calling the event “Shamrock Signing Saturday”.

NMM is leading the effort to place two statutory medical cannabis initiatives on the ballot before voters this November. Supporters need to collect 87,000 verified voter signatures on each petition by July 3, 2024.&nbsp; Additionally, they are required to qualify 38 counties with signatures from at least 5% of the counties voter population.

Nebraska families and patients with severe and debilitating illnesses called on state lawmakers to enact a compassionate cannabis policy for over ten years before they decided to go to the ballot. The campaign collected more than enough signatures in 2020, but were later tossed from the ballot after a legal challenge. In 2022, the death of their financial backers forced them to run a fully grassroots campaign where they came up 8,000 signatures short.

“Nebraskans across the state overwhelmingly support medical cannabis access. Most recent polling shows at least 70% approval statewide, including a majority of every demographic group and all political affiliations. We will not stop until every suffering Nebraskan has the option of medical cannabis, and that success will come when people have the chance to vote on this in November,” said NMM Campaign Manager Crista Eggers.

The campaign collected more than enough signatures in 2020, but were later tossed from the ballot after a legal challenge. In 2022, the death of their financial backers forced them to run a fully grassroots campaign where they came up 8,000 signatures short.“Nebraskans across the state overwhelmingly support medical cannabis access. Most recent polling shows at least 70% approval statewide, including a majority of every demographic group and all political affiliations. MEDICAL CANNABIS BALLOT INITIATIVE HOSTS STATEWIDE SIGNING EVENT ON SATURDAY

Parents will be able to learn about upcoming offerings for children during a Youth Summer Sign-Up Day April 2. Activities are scheduled for 3:45-6 p.m. at the North Platte Recreation Center.

The event is designed as a “one-stop shop” to save parents time and effort by bringing local youth organizations under one roof to promote their programs.

Approximately 20 organizations from the North Platte area will be on hand to provide details and answer questions about their summer events.&nbsp;

The Sign-Up Day is a joint effort of Mid-Plains Community College, the North Platte Public Schools Foundation and the North Platte Recreation Center.
