Janice (Porter) Rahn, 72, of Grant, passed away on March 1, 2024, at home surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with cancer.

Janice Kay (Porter) Rahn was born August 27, 1951, in North Platte, Nebraska, to Don Ezra and Ruby Mildred (Cunningham) Porter Jr.

Nicknamed Janni by her family, she grew up on a farm northeast of Elsie, Nebraska, with three sisters. She attended Rural District 23 school until the 8th grade when the school closed. Janni attended school in Elsie until her junior year when Elsie and Madrid consolidated and became Wheatland Schools. She graduated in 1969 and left home that summer to attend Central Business College in Denver, specializing in their medical secretary program.

Janni finished business school in Denver on a Friday and began her first job on the following Monday at Mutual of New York Insurance Company. After 15 years, she sought a medical secretary position in Gastroenterology at the University of Colorado Health Science Center.

Jan married Jim Jacobsen in 1973, and the couple later divorced in 1981. She married Dr. John Goff in 1982, and two children were born to this union, Charles Porter Goff and Bonnie Jan Goff. Janni became a stay-at-home mom until the marriage dissolved in 1991. She returned to work at Denver Public Schools as a secretary in their Community Resource Program.

In late Summer of 1993, Janni and her young kids moved to Grant, Nebraska, to be near her parents and sisters. She got a typist job at the Grant Tribune Sentinel, working her way into the Managing Editor position in 2001. She retired in 2015 to enjoy time with her mother, children, and grandchildren.

As a girl, Janni's passion was the freedom of the farm, the animals, the chores, and all of nature. Being a mom and grandma (she was affectionately called "Granny") were the biggest joys in her life, and she spent every moment she could enjoying family. Her deep love for her family, God, and nature, along with a dream for equality and peace, are her legacy.

In 2009, Jan married Harlan Rahn, a plumber and fireman. They became a blended family that included his two children and four grandchildren.

Janni was a member of the Grant United Methodist Church, where she served on committees, taught Sunday School, and assisted with Bible School. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for many years.

Janni loved to be around home, cooking, tending to her plants and pets, always anticipating the next time she'd see her kids or grandkids. She and Harlan loved short trips and cruising town and country with their dogs. Her entire life, Janni considered herself a farm girl.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, a cousin: David Cunningham, and an infant nephew.

She is survived by her husband, Harlan; children, Charlie (Samantha) Goff and Bonnie (Mica) Becker; stepson, Wade (Shelly) Rahn; stepdaughter, Devon Rahn; 10 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Emmalee Parsley, Porter Jo and Jayven Goff; Bella and Radley Becker; Jake Rahn and Kobe Chmelka; Callie Williams, Camden and Kennady Schlem. Survivors also include her sisters, Pam (Larry) Seiler, Gailya (Tim) Cooper, Donna (Mike) Mayer; cousin Nancy (Michelle) Arroyoavila; along with many nieces, nephews and cherished friends.

A memorial has been established in Jan's memory for later designation.

Virginia "Beth"&nbsp; Shelton was born October 14, 1962, to Gene and Elizabeth Shelton in Denver. &nbsp;She passed away at the North Platte Care Center on March 2, 2024, at the age of 61.

Beth grew up in North Platte where she graduated from NPHS then Mid-Plains Community College while working as the head cook at the American Legion. &nbsp;

Beth loved animals, the water and adventure, so in 1986 she followed her dream and moved to the Grand Cayman Islands. &nbsp;She spent the next 26 years as a diving instructor, underwater photographer, and was a boat captain. &nbsp;Beth owned Celebrity Divers which offered small groups personalized service. &nbsp;She loved what she did and enjoyed helping others experience the water. &nbsp;In 2012 she returned to North Platte.

Beth leaves behind her mother and stepfather, Elizabeth and Leo Colson, of North Platte; sister, Carol Edwards (Kevin) of North Platte; brothers, Ron Shelton of Loup City and Don Shelton and Fred Shelton (Theresa) of North Platte; step siblings, Tim Colson (Dana) and Don Colson (Kathy) of Florida and Brenda Solomon (Randy) of Missouri; nieces and nephews, Mindy Imsdahl (Ben), Nicole Johnson (Toby), Christina Shelton, Austin Shelton (Ashley), Dezarae Johnson (Eric), Derick Shelton (Shandell), Samuel Shelton, Candice Vetock (Tyler) and Kammi Altig (Aaron); and other family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gene Shelton; and step brother, James Colson.

Beth Shelton (1962-2024)

Phyllis Jean Markham age 82 of Merna, NE passed away peacefully at the Jennie M Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow on Friday, March 1, 2024.

Phyllis was born on May 25, 1941, to Lyle and Kathyrn (Pokorney) Waffensmith in Litchfield, NE. During Phyllis’s younger age, she lived in Edgemont, South Dakota where her father’s employment with BN Railroad took them. Later his employment moved them to the Anselmo-Merna area. She graduated from Merna High School in 1959. After graduating from high school, she attended Grand Island School of Cosmetology. After graduating from college, she returned to the area and worked for Lavonne’s Beauty Salon in Broken Bow. She met Jimmie D Markham, and they married in Merna, NE on March 25, 1961.

To this union six children were born: Michelle Santos (Rogaciano) of Merna, Kimberly Christen (Dale) of Ravenna, James Markham (Cindy) of Merna, Allison Lempka (Larry) of Minden, Jennifer Lewis (Russell) of Lincoln, and Robert Markham married Lisa Rynearson - he passed in 2015.

Phyllis worked in Merna for Mary’s Beauty Salon and Margaret Schlund’s Beauty Shop. After Margaret retired, Phyllis moved into her home and took over the beauty shop.

Jim passed away at an early age of 53 years leaving her to care for Jennifer and Robert independently, she then worked as a waitress on Sundays at the Lobby Restaurant and helping at Bob’s Liquor Store for her uncle Dallas and aunt Ann Bury.

Phyllis was passionate and took a lot of pride in her profession, she was known to give the best shampoos.

Phyllis “Mom” was always concerned for her children and worried about her grandchildren. After Robert’s death, Phyllis’s health started to decline. The kids demanded that she retire her “Scissors”. Following her hospitalization, she moved in with Shelly and Santos until her death. She will be missed by her family and friends. Phyllis had an attachment to Shelly’s cats. Phyllis always had compassion for animals. The ability to love animals has been carried through by some of her children.

Phyllis is survived by her sister Judith Brass of Cozad, sister-in-law Glenna Markham of Aurora, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Phyllis was not only preceded in death by her husband Jim and her son Robert, but also her father and mother, step-grandson Neil, and numerous others.

Phyllis was the charter member of the Mixing Mamas Extension Club; she attended Merna Methodist Church and Merna UMW.&nbsp;

Ellamae (Spencer) Moseley, 99, passed away Thursday, February 29 at Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney.

The last survivor among Ralph and Elsie (Pirnie) Spencer’s 11 children, Ellamae was born on April 23, 1924.

Ellamae and her siblings grew up in a three-bedroom farmhouse on the banks of Clear Creek west of Weissert, where she attended school through eighth grade.

As a young woman, she and her sister Frances moved to Grand Island during World War II where they were employed at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant.

There, Ellamae, Frances, and hundreds of co-workers assembled bombs and artillery shells to support the war effort. She was prominent in a feature story and photos by a military publication at that time. In more recent years the exhibit was enjoyed by Americans nationwide in a traveling display of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., where it is permanently housed.

While she served the war effort from Grand Island, Russell Moseley of Broken Bow was aboard the destroyer USS Sigourney in the Pacific Theater against Japan. In his five-year enlistment he participated in the Battle for Leyte Gulf, still the largest naval conflict in history, and many other engagements. He left his studies and the football team at Kearney State Teachers College (now UNK) and raced to join the Navy in reaction to Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor.

Following service to their country in very different yet oddly similar capacities, the couple met upon Russell’s return from the fighting, courted, and were married on February 3, 1948. Together they raised sons Steve, Jim, and Brad.

Until old enough to qualify for work at the ordnance plant, she was a manual switchboard operator at North Platte in the iconic ‘number please’ era of early American telephone communication.

Always up for adventure, Ellamae and Russell spent many winters in Texas, cruised the Caribbean, toured Germany when son Brad was stationed there in the Army, enjoyed Yellowstone and other national parks many times and visited both coasts, including a two-week family vacation to the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair.

Following Russell’s January 7, 2011, death at the Veterans Home in Grand Island, Ellamae remained a member there and later moved with the new facility to Kearney.

While a member in Grand Island, her lifelong adventurous spirit manifested when she gleefully said ‘yes’ to a thrilling, barnstorming flight aboard a two-place, open-cockpit aerobatic biplane (that’s her in the photo) and also took a rollicking airboat ride skimming over the Platte.

Ellamae was a proud member in good standing of the American Rosie the Riveter Association as well as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries in Broken Bow.

She and Russell, owners for years of Moseley’s IGA in Genoa and later Moseley’s IGA of Lexington, were also longtime members of the Broken Bow United Methodist Church, to which memorials are suggested.

She is survived by sons Steve (Norma), Jim (Mary), daughter-in-law Ana, nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Ellamae was also preceded in death by daughter-in-law Sandy (January 11, 1997) and son Brad (February 3, 2021).

Ellamae Moseley (1924-2024)

Johnny Paul Podkonyak, 90, of Lewellen passed away early Friday morning, March 1, 2024 at the Regional West Garden County Hospital in Oshkosh.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024 at the Lewellen Tiger Den with Brenda Tophoj, PMA officiating. &nbsp;Burial in the Ash Hollow Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Memorials in John’s name can be made to the Lewellen Rural Fire Department or Lewellen Tiger Den.

Johnny Paul was born October 12, 1933 to Paul and Edith (Brunt) Podkonyak at their home in Lewellen. &nbsp; John attended school in Lewellen, graduating in 1951. &nbsp;While in school he excelled in sports and enjoyed all sports throughout his life, especially Husker football.

After high school he was employed at Jack Beard’s filling station before going to Omaha to work construction with his brother-in-law, Dick Roberts. &nbsp;He later returned to Lewellen to work for Patterson Chevron Station until 1955, when he was drafted into the Navy. &nbsp;While in the Navy, most of John’s service was spent on the USS Lexington, patrolling the Pacific.

After he was discharged in 1957, he returned to Lewellen and married JoAnn Grace on November 8, 1958. &nbsp; After a short stay in Omaha, John and JoAnn returned once again to Lewellen and joined the family farming and ranching operation. &nbsp;Two daughters were born to John and JoAnn: Holli Ann in December 1959 and Jill Marie in October 1965. &nbsp;

John retired in 1999 and purchased an RV in which John and JoAnn traveled the country for 3 years before buying a winter home in Mesa, Arizona. &nbsp;While in Arizona, John took up golf and enjoyed entertaining old and new friends. &nbsp;Following 23 winters spent in Arizona, they returned to their home in Lewellen for good, just recently celebrating their 65th&nbsp;wedding anniversary.

John is survived by his wife, JoAnn of Lewellen; daughter Jill (William) Campbell of Oshkosh; son-in-law, Sid Fessler of North Loup; brothers-in-law, Merlin (Arlene) Grace and Butch (Jeannie) Grace; and several nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Edith, daughter, Holli in 2014; sister and brother-in-law, June (Dick) Roberts; brother-in-law and his wife, Marvin (Gail) Grace, mother and father-in-law, Dale and Vi Grace, and other extended family members.

Johnny "John" Podkonyak (1933-2024)

Roy Lee Flies, 76, of Kearney, Nebraska, died February 28, 2024 in Kearney, NE.&nbsp;

Roy was born November 7, 1947 in Auburn, NE, son of Eugene and Willa (Miller) Flies.

Roy grew up in the Auburn area where he graduated High School. He joined the Army and served for four years. During his time in the Army he was in Germany, Australia, and served in the Vietnam War among other places. After he was discharged, he returned to Auburn, then moved to North Platte in 1976 where he worked in construction. Roy graduated from Mid Plains Vo-Tech as a welder and diesel mechanic. In 1978 he married Elaine Aubushon and gained a son, Tony and later to this union two boys were born. They lived in Humboldt, Brady, Ravenna and Shelton before moving into the VA home. Roy had a love of horses, leather working, tinkering on tractors, creating ceramics at the VA, and just being ornery. He loved playing Santa Claus and being with kids. His grandkids meant the world to him. He was a very proud veteran.&nbsp;

Survivors include wife, Elaine Flies of Kearney, NE; two sons, Travis (Angela) Flies of Gibbon, NE, Tony (Michelle) Aubushon of North Platte, NE; two sisters, Chris (Arnie), Dona (LeRoy), brother, Dave (Pat) Flies, granddaughter, Riggin Flies, three grandsons, Garrett, Caleb, Trenton Flies.

Roy Lee Flies (1947-2024)

Carl Danny "Duffy" Schulz, 74, passed away peacefully on the evening of Feb 23, 2024, at the Ogallala Community Hospital. He was a beloved husband, father, Grandpa Big Guy, brother, uncle and friend.

Dan was born on July 8, 1949 in Fairplay, CO, to Carl and Alma (Bryant) Schulz. He grew up in the Brule area and graduated from Brule High School in 1967. He attended college in Sterling, CO. He met Joyce Griffiths in high school, and the couple married on June 22, 1976, in Fredrick, MD. They welcomed a daughter, Sarah, while living in Maryland.

He worked as a food and beverage manager at a Holiday Inn on the East Coast before the couple returned to Nebraska to be closer to family. Upon returning to the Brule area, Dan was a bar owner and bartender. One of his favorite things about working in the bar business was meeting and visiting with the patrons.

He was an avid traveler, sports lover and storyteller. In his younger years, Dan was a scuba diver and small plane pilot, both hobbies that led to a variety of adventures. He was widely known for his pet pigs and his love of dachshunds, particularly Ollie who used to ride on Dan's scooters.

Dan enjoyed road trips across the U.S. with his family and plane trips to the Nevada casinos. One of his favorite places to visit was Las Vegas, where he had a multitude of friends.

Survivors include his wife Joyce of Brule; daughter, Sarah (Mike) Bockoven of Grand Island; granddaughters, Emaline Joyce Bockoven of Lincoln and Tessa Danielle Bockoven of Grand Island; sister, Judy (Gene) Dickinson of Lodgepole; brother, Todd (Courtney) Schulz of Brule; sisters-in-law, Judy Lehl of Brule, Jean (Terry) Timm of Big Springs, and Jacque Schmer of Grant; brother-in-law, Joe (Debbie) Griffiths of Charlestown, WV; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins; and countless friends.

Carl D. "Dan" Schulz (1949-2024)

John Douglas Kraus, 91, of Madrid, passed away on February 28, 2024, at the Imperial Manor in Imperial, NE.

Doug was born on July 23, 1932, in Madrid, NE to John P. and Barbara K. (Zieons) Kraus. He attended country grade school northeast of Grant until the 8th grade before graduating from St Patrick's Catholic School in Sidney. Following his education, Doug entered the US Army, where he served during the Korean War.

On January 14, 1956, Doug married Esther Lanckriet at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Julesburg, CO. The couple settled on a farm near Madrid, NE, where they raised their four children: Christine, Debra, Timothy, and Mark. John's life was deeply rooted in the values of hard work and family.

Following his education, John dedicated himself to farming and had a special love for the corn harvest and all that was involved. Doug started his trucking business later in life, which was something he also really enjoyed.

Throughout his life, Doug was known for his strong work ethic and his commitment to his family. In addition to his farming and family life, he loved Cornhusker Football and working on puzzles.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Kraus; his siblings, William, Karl, and Lou; and his brother-in-law, Len Johnson.

Survivors include his children, Chris Wendell of Grant, Deb Kraus of Madrid, Tim Kraus of Ogallala, and Mark Kraus of Madrid; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Marty Ising, Marietta Johnson, Tom (Janet) Kraus, Gerry (Shari) Kraus, Chris (Janice) Kraus, Kay (George) Meeks, and Pat (Joan) Kraus; sister-in-law, Patti Kraus; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Sister Rita Ann Mazanec died February 27, 2024, at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, KS. &nbsp;She was 94 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 73 years. &nbsp;She was born in Colby, KS on February 3, 1930 to Adolph and Hattie Kobza Mazanec, the sixth of seven children, and was baptized Irene Joan. &nbsp;She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, Kansas on September 8, 1949. &nbsp;On March 18, 1950, Irene received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Rita Ann. &nbsp;She pronounced first vows on August 15, 1951 and final vows on August 15, 1954.

Sister Rita Ann received an BA degree in History from Marymount College in 1968. &nbsp;She taught primary grades in Aurora, IL; Tipton, Plainville and Aurora, KS; Fairbury, NE, Beloit and Oakley, KS for a total of 42 years. &nbsp;After retirement she moved to Concordia and did various duties and served as bookkeeper for the community. &nbsp;In 2007 she moved to the Motherhouse.

Sister Rita Ann Mazanec (1930-2024)

Michael "Mike" Allen, age 63, of Julesburg, Colorado, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at his home.&nbsp; Mike was born on June 16 1960 in Cheyenne, Wyoming to John and Anna (Day) Allen.

Mike's early life began in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he grew up and attended school.&nbsp; He joined the US Army in 1967, where he served as a Combat Engineer.&nbsp; His commitment to his country continued beyond his active duty, through his involvement in the guards for many years after his discharge.

Following his military career, Mike demonstrated exceptional skill as a master mechanic.&nbsp; His early work at Montgomery Wards in Cheyenne and subsequent construction work in Casper, Wyoming showcased his versatility and mechanical prowess.&nbsp; Mike's expertise extended to massive engines and auto mechanics, earning his associates degree in Auto Technology in 1994, which he would later put to use at a Ford dealership.&nbsp; Mike was so good at fixing anything with a motor, that he could listen to the sound over the phone and both diagnose and instruct a person verbally on how to fix it.&nbsp; However, his primary focus remained on his family, for whom he provided through various means, including property management, in later years.

Mike's love for animals, particularly the cats that found their way to his home, spoke volumes about his compassionate nature.&nbsp; A teacher, soldier, artist, mechanic, property manager, plumber, Mr. Fix-It, lifelong student, stock-trader, husband, father, and grandpa.&nbsp; Mike was a man of many talents and gifts who wore every hat well.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Preceding him in death are his grandparents, Elmer Arthur and Dorothy Day.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Brenda, of Julesburg, CO; daughter, Alicia (Felipe) Saenz of Cheyenne, WY; sons Nathaniel Arthur (Ashley Gibo) Allen of Cheyenne, WY and Matthew Ardn (Cheyenne) Allen of Omaha, NE; Nick Tucker and his family; grandchildren, Victoria Saenz, Michael Saenz, Logan Allen, Arthur Allen, and Nick; siblings David (Virginia) Allen of Laramie, WY and Amber (Joe) Eggleston of Cheyenne, WY; and many other relatives and friends.

 </figure>Michael "Mike" Allen, age 63, of Julesburg, Colorado, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at his home.&nbsp; Mike was born on June 16 1960 in Cheyenne, Wyoming to John and Anna (Day) Allen.Mike's early life began in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he grew up and attended school.&nbsp; He joined the US Army in 1967, where he served as a Combat Engineer.&nbsp; His commitment to his country continued beyond his active duty, through his involvement in the guards for many years after his discharge.Following his military career, Mike demonstrated exceptional skill as a master mechanic.&nbsp; His early work at Montgomery Wards in Cheyenne and subsequent construction work in Casper, Wyoming showcased his versatility and mechanical prowess.&nbsp; Mike's expertise extended to massive engines and auto mechanics, earning his associates degree in Auto Technology in 1994, which he would later put to use at a Ford dealership.&nbsp; Mike was so good at fixing anything with a motor, that he could listen to the sound over the phone and both diagnose and instruct a person verbally on how to fix it.&nbsp; However, his primary focus remained on his family, for whom he provided through various means, including property management, in later years.Mike's love for animals, particularly the cats that found their way to his home, spoke volumes about his compassionate nature.&nbsp; A teacher, soldier, artist, mechanic, property manager, plumber, Mr. Fix-It, lifelong student, stock-trader, husband, father, and grandpa.&nbsp; Mike was a man of many talents and gifts who wore every hat well.&nbsp;&nbsp;Preceding him in death are his grandparents, Elmer Arthur and Dorothy Day.Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Brenda, of Julesburg, CO; daughter, Alicia (Felipe) Saenz of Cheyenne, WY; sons Nathaniel Arthur (Ashley Gibo) Allen of Cheyenne, WY and Matthew Ardn (Cheyenne) Allen of Omaha, NE; Nick Tucker and his family; grandchildren, Victoria Saenz, Michael Saenz, Logan Allen, Arthur Allen, and Nick; siblings David (Virginia) Allen of Laramie, WY and Amber (Joe) Eggleston of Cheyenne, WY; and many other relatives and friends.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of choice in Mike's memory.&nbsp; Michael's immediate family will hold a personal memorial service among themselves.&nbsp; They request that everyone honor his memory and the impact he had in their lives in their own personal way.Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsjulesburg.com.Prairie Hills Funeral Home of Julesburg, CO is assisting the Allen family.

James Dennis "Jim" Klein passed away Monday, February 26, 2024 at Meadowlark Pointe Assisted Living at the age of 80. Jim was born in Callaway, NE on October 2, 1943 to Edd and Daisy (Helmuth) Klein. &nbsp;Jim was the fifth of six children. &nbsp;He attended school in Merna and was an Honor Society member and a very gifted athlete. &nbsp;He never spoke about his athletic prowess and his own children didn't learn of this until they were in college.&nbsp;

Jim married Janet Davy on May 25, 1962. &nbsp;It seemed like a natural thing to do since Janet had been driving him around town since he was fifteen years old. &nbsp;They had three daughters Julie, Joni and Jill and his number one son Jeff (to which Jeff replied, "I'm the only son, Dad").

&nbsp;Jim went to work for Monroe Auto in Cozad after completing high school and worked there until 1978. &nbsp;When the workday was over, he worked on his top-flight golf game with family and friends. Jon Wilson and Gary Jobman were two of his best golf buddies among many others. Weekends consisted of Mass on Saturday night and sunrise golf on Sunday morning (with a pellet gun for shooting varmint gophers along the way). He claimed it helped with his shot for hunting season. A little fishing could be mixed in along with after-hours construction projects. &nbsp;As young adults his children went to college with coat trees, bookracks and any other wooden project that was requested.

&nbsp;When the itch of construction needed to be scratched, he left Monroe's and ventured out on his own as a contractor. &nbsp;Initially he teamed up with Gene Schroeder in Brady, NE at the Cabinet Shop. &nbsp;Jim eventually built homes, did remodels and additions and built cabinets that were installed from Maxwell to Lexington, Eustis to Merna. &nbsp;He even did concrete work when he could keep from knocking himself out from getting the sledgehammer caught in the clothesline. He was a naturally gifted engineer and construction manager without the degree. &nbsp;He made sure that all of the trades didn't box each other in on his jobsites. &nbsp;He and Bill Marhenke had a lot of stories to tell. Fortunately for many, Bill loved music on the job site but Jim was meh about the music....work was the music. &nbsp;And oh, did he have standards, "If you're going to do it, do it right" was heard many times. &nbsp;Jeff later would use that to get him to do things a new way with the same high-quality results. &nbsp;Boy, that made him grab a Bud.

&nbsp;Above all of the doing, Jim was about being. &nbsp;He was a St. Joseph. &nbsp;Always guiding, protecting and serving his family and friends. &nbsp;He served on the Church Council and Knights of Columbus, along with being on some city boards. &nbsp;He maintained a large garden that was raved about by many people. &nbsp;He would arrive at people's homes with arms full of his harvest. &nbsp;The horseradish was top-shelf and that legend continues to live on. Many brats, sauerkraut and other goodies were traded to get some of it. &nbsp;You didn't want to get him started on potato planting unless you had the time to commit to listening to the entire process.

&nbsp;Family was at the #1 spot of his list. &nbsp;He never wanted a cell phone but checked in often with his family on it. &nbsp;Jim was a gentle, steady and ready influence for his family and will be missed greatly by Janet, Joni and Jeff Pharris (Jared and Jordann), Jill and Steve Sweeney (Patrick and Kelly), Jeff and Karen Klein (Mackenzie and Collin Thompson and daughter Blake, and Olivia and Isabella), his Brothers Gene and Clifford (Judy) Klein and all of the Cali and Merna Kleins. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Julie.

He was a great Husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa. Be humble, faithful, healthy and at peace for he is and ever will be, wanting us to be too.

Jim’s wishes were to be cremated. Memorials are suggested to the family to set up a Trade School Scholarship. Rosary will be recited Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church.&nbsp;

Memorial Mass with cremains will be held April 20, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church.

Jim Klein (1943-2024)

&nbsp; Pauline Brandt, age 90 of Imperial, died February 27, 2024. Pauline was born April 15, 1933 in rural Chase County. She was the oldest child born to James Calvin and Edna Jaeger Gardner. She grew up on the family farm north west of Imperial. Pauline attended country school District #22 where she was the only one in the class each year. She graduated from Chase County High School in 1950.

Pauline taught in rural schools for four years. She attended summer classes at McCook Community College.

Pauline was married to Gilbert Brandt on June 5, 1954. They spent the first year of marriage in Norfolk, VA while Gilbert finished up his four years in the Navy. Gilbert and Pauline returned to their family farm and she resided there the rest of her life.

Gilbert and Pauline farmed together and did most other activities together. They were able to travel across the United States and Canada in their lifetimes. They both enjoyed time with family and friends.

Gilbert and Pauline belonged to a neighborhood card club that lasted 52 years. All their time together, they loved to dance. Pauline always had house plants in her home. She loved to take pictures and had filled over 75 albums. Pauline kept a diary since she was married.

In addition to her parents, Calvin and Edna Gardner, Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Brandt; son-in-law: Dennis Holmes; her sister: Maurine Ransdell and Maurine’s husband, Gale; brothers: Larry Gardner, and Myron Gardner; Brothers-in-law: Dick Reynolds and Duane Goff. She is survived by her daughter: Deena Holmes; her son: Troy (Judy)Brandt. Grandchildren: Shelbi (Preston) Jueneman; Skye (Royce) Mercer; David Holmes and great grandchildren: Preston Holmes, Quincy, Rhett and Presley Mercer. Also survived by brothers: Delvin(Loneta) Gardner and Lauren(Pam) Gardner; Sisters: LaVeta Reynolds and LeAnna Goff; Sisters-in-law Carol Gardner and Shirley Gardner. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Pauline Brandt (1933-2024)

Local racing legend, Russell G. Small Sr., 64, of North Platte, NE took life's checkered flag on Feb, 22, 2024 at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, CO.

Russ “Animal" Small joined this race we call life at the Sutherland Hospital on Aug. 30, 1959, when he was born to Julian G. and Luella M. (Smith) Small.

Russ resided in North Platte the majority of his life, aside from a few years spent in Sutherland in his late teenage years. When Russ was 15, tragedy struck and he lost his dad to a fatal heart attack. This was the reason for the move to Sutherland. Upon his graduation from Sutherland High School in May 1978, he moved back to North Platte. He also graduated from Mid Plains Voc-Tech that spring with certificates of accreditation in Auto Body and Paint and Auto Mechanics.

He worked as a mechanic at Cooper Motors and K-Mart Automotive Center until Sept. 1978, when he was hired as a Carman at Union Pacific Railroad. He gave almost 40 years of loyal service to the railroad before having to be pulled from duty due to injuries. The safety of himself and others was a high priority, and he was even recognized for going the extra mile. He was awarded many letters of recognition through the years, as he helped prevent derailments by finding defects in the rail cars.

When Russ was just 7 years old, he met Kimberly Cain and told his dad he would marry her one day. They would indeed end up married on July 21, 1979 and would celebrate almost 45 years of marriage and the birth of 5 children.

The other love of Russ'&nbsp; life started when he was young too, and that was dirt track racing. He would ride his bicycle from North Platte to Lexington and back just to watch the races at Dawson County Raceway. Then in 1980, he started his racing career at the very same track. In 1985, Russ joined a small group of other racers and brought racing back to North Platte for the first time in 20 years. He helped build Lincoln County Raceway as it sits today. He eventually hung up his steering wheel and race gloves and passed his now famous number 47 down to his son, Russ Jr. He continued to be an integral part of racing for the remainder of his life. He volunteered many hours helping many track promoters. He was knowledgeable and active in almost every aspect of preparing and running the tracks.

As the saying goes, “he had mud in his blood”. The track was his ultimate happy place, and he and his family proved “the family that races together, stays together.” His wife, kids, and even 2 grandkids raced either stock cars, karts, or demolition derbies.

Those left behind to cherish his memory include: his wife Kim, four children; Jennifer (John) Hunt, Russ Small Jr., Alicia Small (Tim Sanders), and Jeff Small, all of North Platte. Grandchildren; Jeice, Brennan, and Reese Hunt, Emily Winter, and Joseph Small (the apple of his Grandpa Grouchy's eye).

He was preceded in death by: his parents, his infant son Kenneth Ray Small, and his angel grandbabies. He was greeted at the Rainbow Bridge by the many cats he loved and cared for throughout his life. Russ is now reunited with the many close racing friends he lost over the years.

A special memorial race will be held at Lincoln County Raceway at 7pm on July 6 th , 2024. A celebration of life will take place at the Lincoln County Ag Building from 12-6pm on July 7th , 2024. Adams and

Russell G Small (1959-2024)

Lois Elaine Anway passed away at North Platte Care Center on February 27, 2024 at the age of 83. &nbsp;She was born April 28, 1940 to Lester G. and Vada I. (Harvey) Anway in McPherson County near Tryon.

Lois’ family moved around to various places. &nbsp;She graduated grade school from District #12 in Arthur County. &nbsp;Lois attended McPherson County High School and graduated May 16, 1957. &nbsp;Lois and her mother worked at the café in Tryon and helped serve food at the Tryon sale barn. &nbsp;She helped paint houses and Lois and her brother worked in the hay fields in the summertime.&nbsp; Lois helped her Grandpa Harvey with his business, sold Tupperware and Beeline clothes. &nbsp;She worked at the Pawnee Retirement Hotel as kitchen manager until she retired. &nbsp;Lois enjoyed watching Nebraska Cornhusker football and volleyball and also enjoyed playing Bingo. &nbsp;She collected stuffed Dalmatians.

Lois is survived by brother, Leslie (Beverly) Anway of North Platte; numerous other family members and friends.

Lois Elaine Anway (1940-2024)

Eugene&nbsp;Langemeier of North Platte peacefully passed away on February 27, 2024, at the age of 78.

Gene, the son of Harvey and Anna Mae Langemeier, was born October 6, 1945, at Osmond, NE, and grew up on a farm near Magnet, NE. &nbsp;He graduated from Wausa High School.

On November 29, 1963, Gene married Cheryl Plog in Wausa, NE, then went on to serve in the U.S. Navy. &nbsp;Following his discharge in 1966, Gene returned to his bride in Wausa.

The couple moved to Stapleton in 1972 then to North Platte in '78 where Gene worked 28 years with Hild Propane. He later worked for his son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Teresa, driving for Cornhusker Delivery (hauling supplies for Menards) and at the Laundry Zone. &nbsp;Gene liked working and socializing with customers.

If he wasn't working, Gene enjoyed pitching horseshoes, bowling, playing cards and fiddling in his garage. &nbsp;He was also a member of the V.F.W. &nbsp;Gene was a great husband, father and grandfather who leaves us with many wonderful memories.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Cheryl, and their children, Brent Langemeier, Brad Langemeier (Teresa) and Kim Richter (James), all of North Platte; grandchildren, Tara Schultz (Zach), Karsen Falcon (Jimmy), Kaden Langemeier, Braden Langemeier, Bryce Langemeier and Maylah Langemeier; great-grandkids, Greah and Boon Falcon and Rhiannon Schultz; his brother, Gary Langemeier (Janet) of Hemet, CA; sister-in-law, Diana Langemeier of Wayne; and numerous other family members.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Anna Mae; and brother, Wayne.

Gene Langemeier (1945-2024)

Marvin Clifford Boesen was born in Murphy, Nebraska on March 21, 1927 to Harry and Mildred Boesen. He was the first born of identical twin boys. His twin brother Marcus, who was the long-time Dean at Black Hills State College in Spearfish, South Dakota died at 59.

Marvin was preceded in death by brothers Marcus, Clarke, and Curtis and sisters Mary Jane and Gretchen. He is survived by his youngest sibling, his brother Kelly (New Braunfels, TX).

When in high school, Marvin enlisted in the Navy to serve in World War II and was a gunner on the battle cruiser U.S.S. Alaska, in the South China Sea. &nbsp;He graduated from Hastings College with post-graduate studies at the University of Nebraska and Colorado State University. At Hastings, he majored in English with a minor in Physical Education. He taught English and coached for 25 years, including several state champion teams and individuals. Along the way he was also a counselor and superintendent. While coaching and teaching in Rapid City, South Dakota, he worked as a seasonal ranger at Mount Rushmore. In 1970 he leveraged his doctoral work and become a school psychologist and moved to North Platte where he worked for Educational Service Unit #16 for 20 years.

Marvin married his wife of 70 years, Marjorie, in 1953 and raised three sons: Michael (Fort Collins, Colorado), Mark (Rockford, Illinois), and Monte (Malcolm, Nebraska).

He was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to fish, hunt, hike, camp, and play golf. He fished from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Two of his favorite fishing places were in the Black Hills, casting for trout in Sylvan Lake or Deerfield Reservoir. Much of his golf was played at Lake Maloney Golf Club in North Platte where there is a stone bench in his honor by the first tee. He was particularly fond of his chocolate Labrador retriever, Maxi. He spent many hours training her for field trials. &nbsp;In retirement, Marvin and Marjorie wintered in Rockport, TX where he fished, played golf, and enjoyed the friendship of fellow snow birds. At home, he was a voracious reader of mysteries and historical nonfiction.

From Marvin: “Weep not for me. I have spent my allotted time on this orb. It’s time to move on. I’ve heard you can’t take it with you, but I’m taking memories with me . . . of a loving wife and our three boys, and the things they’ve said and done over the many years of growth and development.”

Marvin is survived by his wife, three sons, grandchildren: Christopher (Tomball, Texas) and Matthew (Cypress,Texas), Michelle (Mito, Japan) and Mark Jr. (Gurnee, Illinois), Heather Lovejoy (Roscoe, Illinois), Andrea Featherston (Roscoe, Illinois), John (Malcolm, Nebraska), Kyler (Pingree Grove, Illinois); and great grandchildren: Brooke and Beau (Tomball, Texas), and many nieces and nephews.

Inurnment will be at Loup Fork Cemetery in Boelus, Nebraska with many generations of his paternal ancestors.

Robert (Bob) Gollner (76) passed away at his home in Omaha, Nebraska, on December 28, 2023.

Bob was born on May 21, 1947, in Imperial, NE. He graduated from Venango High School in 1965 and Kearney State College in 1970. He taught history for the Omaha Public School District before spending the next 28 years as a probation officer in Omaha. He approached his work, and his life, with compassion, care, humility, and a wonderful sense of humor. Bob retired from the District Probation Office in 2009.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Hart Gollner, father Harvey Gollner and brother Donald Gollner. He was a dear uncle to Brent and Patty Gollner of Hastings, NE; Donya and Rick Hengehold of Edwardsville, IL; Nikki Pfeiffer of Madrid, NE and BJ Gollner, also of Madrid, and brother-in-law to Judy Gollner of Imperial, NE and Billie Shelton of Council Bluffs IA. He was cherished by a wide circle of friends and family, former colleagues, neighbors, and anyone lucky enough to know him. He was "Uncle Bob" not only to his nieces and nephews and their children, but to so many others who will miss his sharp wit, kindness and friendship.

Robert Gollner (1947-2023)

Deborah Ann Bostwick, 67, life-long resident of North Platte, NE passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at her home.

Deborah was born on December 18, 1956 in North Platte, NE the daughter of Harlan and Shirley (Floro) Herrick. She grew up in a large family along with her eight siblings and attended school in North Platte graduating from North Platte High School in 1975. It was while in high school she met the love of her life, Robert Ray Bostwick. They were married on August 2, 1974 in North Platte and together had three children.

There was nothing that Deborah put her mind to that she could not accomplish. She was a very talented interior designer who eventually put all her energy into establishing her own business in 1998 out of her home. She owned and operated Deborah’s First-Class Interiors, eventually moving to its downtown location serving clients from all over Nebraska and beyond. Working&nbsp;alongside her daughter Jill, her clients became more, they became her friends. She made time for everyone, often spending hours listening to clients wishes and dreams for their home designs. In 1999 she was awarded by the American Society of Interior Designers, the National Excellence in Design Award. She was also top of her class in brick laying school, again showing there wasn’t anything Deb put her mind to that she couldn’t do. In the last several years of her life Deb dedicated herself to growing and designing beautiful floral bouquets sharing them each week with local nursing homes, and homeless shelters in the area. She also made seasonal decorative wreaths that were freely given with love to all. Deb was a member of the Berean Church in North Platte and had a very strong faith in God and Jesus. She was always very giving of herself, and her kindness flowed over to everyone she met. Family was most important to her, and she absolutely adored her grandchildren. Deb will be very missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harlan and Shirley Herrick, and by a sister, Lori Dougherty.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, Robert; children, Robert “Bob” Bostwick of North Platte, Jill (Brian) Baxter of North Platte, and Jacob (Bianca) Bostwick of Cheyenne, WY; grandchildren, Chloe and Josie Bostwick, Bryson and Rhiannon Baxter, Jacobi and Jasmine Bostwick; siblings, Harlan Herrick of North Platte, Donna (Mike) Coleman of Hershey, Randy Herrick of North Platte, Sharon (Dave) Christensen of Papillion, Cindy (Perry) Hall of North Platte, and Dan (Jacque) Herrick of North Platte; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024 at the Berean Church with Pastor John Stone officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, February 29th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which has been entrusted with the arrangements.
