NORTH PLATTE - The last week of September is dedicated as National Employee Older Workers Week and the week encourages employers to hire older workers to join their team. The Nebraska Department of Labor is always offering programs for workers 55 and older who want to get back into the work field. The Nebraska Department of Labor offers what's called the Senior Community Service Employment Program. The program is targeted at workers who are 55 and older, are unemployed and maybe looking to start a new career path. The program runs year-round but is limited spots.&nbsp;

If you are interested in joining the Senior Community Service Employment Program, you can contact the Nebraska Department of Labor office at (308)-535-8320 or you can go to their office building in North Platte. Trials for the winter peas included 16 varieties and were planted in the fall of 2022. The winter pea trials at Perkins County were excellent, considering the dry fall and being planted into dry soil. The peas went into winter without significant stands. Volunteering wheat from the preceding crop hindered a good stand in the spring. Rainy weather meant the volunteer wheat could not be sprayed on time. Not much winter kill was observed. The trails in Cheyenne County failed with dry soils and poor stands in the spring.

The spring pea variety trials planted in the fall of 2023 included 12 varieties. Overall, this year’s spring pea variety testing result was excellent compared to the last two to three years’ extremely poor yield due to drought and high temperature. This year’s weather was ideal, with lots of rain and mild temperatures throughout the growing season. Results were recorded for both Cheyenne and Perkins County, but Box Butte peas failed because of hail.&nbsp;

The trials included winter and spring peas from ProGene and Meridian Seeds, with winter peas from Seed Ranch and spring peas from Valesco Genetics.

Perkins County winter and spring pea seed protein data will be posted at a later date.&nbsp;

North Platte Community College will showcase the talents of the top high school musicians in the area Oct. 23.

NPCC’s music department will host the Best of the West Music Festival on its south campus, giving high school students selected through an audition process the opportunity to perform at the collegiate level.

“We implemented auditions this year to make it truly, ‘Best of the West,’ and to provide students with exposure to the auditioning process - something they will find more often as they progress through the music world,” said&nbsp;Kristin Simpson, NPCC music instructor.

Thirty-one high school musicians from nine schools were selected for inclusion in the festival. They are:

The high school students will spend all day rehearsing ahead of an open to the public performance when they will join members of the college’s concert choir and jazz band on stage for the NPCC Fall Concert.&nbsp;Simpson will lead the choir, and&nbsp;Jennifer Winder will direct the band.

The concert is free to attend. It will&nbsp;begin at 6 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

Parker McCollum and Jelly Roll will headline the 2024 Viaero Summer Jam Concert Series. The concerts will wrap up the 60th edition of NEBRASKAland DAYS on June 21st and 22nd, 2024.&nbsp; “We’re always trying to bring the best of country music to North Platte every year,” says Executive Director David Fudge. “We managed to get that done again for this year and we’re pretty excited about it.”&nbsp;

McCollum was also nominated for new artist of the year by the&nbsp;&nbsp;CMA. His career dates back a decade, and started in the Texas&nbsp;&nbsp;Red Dirt scene. He released two albums under the PYM Music&nbsp;&nbsp;label before MCA Nashville signed him and released his 2021 album Gold Chain Cowboy. The album produced his first two number one singles: Pretty Heart and To Be Loved by You. 

The Academy of Country Music awarded McCollum New Male Artist&nbsp;&nbsp;of the Year and Breakthrough Video of the Year in 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;Supporting McCollum is Flatland Cavalry and newcomer Meg Mcree.&nbsp;Flatland Cavalry is breaking out into a gallop. After years of hot trotting across their native Texas, the country outfit is primed for a&nbsp;&nbsp;breakout with the release of their third full-length album, the sonically sprawling and wistfully written Welcome to Countryland.

The Texas sextet–bandleader and chief lyricist Cleto Cordero, guitarist Reid Dillon, bassist Jonathan Saenz, drummer Jason Albers, fiddle player Wesley Hall, and recent newcomer utility instrumentalist Adam Gallegos–continue to embrace their trademark sound while further pushing into the wild unknown.&nbsp;

After attending Vanderbilt University on a full academic scholarship, Meg&nbsp;&nbsp;McRee traded her newly earned degree for the pursuit of an unpredictable dream as a&nbsp; songwriter. After a few years of waitressing at The Listening Room and nannying in between co-writes, McRee was validated as more than a driven idealist with the signing&nbsp; of her first publishing deal at Hang Your Hat, a creative joint venture with Concord Music Publishing and hit-songwriter Hillary Lindsey. Since, her musical prowess has earned&nbsp;her cuts with Grace Potter, Elle King, Caylee Hammack, Paul Cauthen, Carter Faith, Ben Chapman, Lauren Watkins, Harper O’Neill and more.

Jelly Roll was recently nominated for five Country Music&nbsp;&nbsp;Association awards, the second most of any artist behind 2022&nbsp;&nbsp;Summer Jam performer Lainey Wilson. He got nods for single of the&nbsp;&nbsp;year, male vocalist of the year, musical event of the year, music&nbsp;&nbsp;video of the year and new artist of the year. 

The 38 year old rapper turned country sensation first made his mark on the genre as a songwriter and has collaborated with some of the top talent in the industry. He’s already charted one number one single off his latest album, Whitsitt Chapel, and his latest release, a collaboration with&nbsp;Wilson herself, is climbing.&nbsp;

Jelly roll will be supported by Priscilla Block and Austin Snell. Block draws listeners in with her unfiltered, relatable songwriting and catchy melodies. Her gregarious personality and engaging stage presence has captured fans across the U.S. and abroad. Pegged as an “Artist to Watch” by virtually every major Country music media outlet, including Amazon&nbsp;&nbsp;Music, PANDORA, Spotify, CMT, The Boot, MusicRow, HITS, Sounds Like&nbsp;&nbsp;Nashville, Country Now, Music Mayhem and more.&nbsp;

Snell is charting a unique course through country music,&nbsp;&nbsp;looking for something of a unique sound that mixes hard&nbsp;&nbsp;rocking sonic aggression with deep feeling confessions of a country troubadour.&nbsp;&nbsp;You’re not supposed to just drift into Nashville with a battered old guitar and&nbsp;&nbsp;write a career-launching hit, either. &nbsp;(North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin Sept. 27 on N-25, from reference post 80.51 to reference post 92.68, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Vontz Paving, Inc. of Hastings is the contractor for this project. Work includes milling, asphalt surfacing,&nbsp; earth shoulder construction, and seeding. Traffic will be maintained with lane closures, a pilot car, and&nbsp; flaggers. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Nov. 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the&nbsp; transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones&nbsp; down.&nbsp;

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration announced Monday that it has awarded more than $1.4 billion to projects that improve railway safety and boost capacity, with much of the money coming from the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-congress-infrastructure-bill-signing-b5b8cca843133de060778f049861b144">2021 infrastructure law</a>.

“These projects will make American rail safer, more reliable, and more resilient, delivering tangible benefits to dozens of communities where railroads are located, and strengthening supply chains for the entire country," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement.

The money is funding 70 projects in 35 states and Washington, D.C. Railroad safety has become a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-derailments-tank-car-ohio-minnesota-c60f33b64e9c7dc05768a78ae20f3ce5">key concern</a>&nbsp;nationwide ever since a train carrying hazardous chemicals&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/norfolk-southern-derailment-east-palestine-ohio-ntsb-bc2531012afcac4ee54e6b3999e31ed9">derailed and caught fire</a>&nbsp;in East Palestine, Ohio, in February.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/east-palestine-train-derailment-norfolk-southern-biden-875699405d37cacbb5dd958dafb18071">President Joe Biden has ordered federal agencies</a>&nbsp;to hold the train's operator Norfolk Southern accountable for the crash, but a package of proposed rail safety reforms&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/east-palestine-train-derailment-safety-regulations-railroad-4db52c68daf68da05425b5b70363fb0a">has stalled in the Senate</a>&nbsp;where the bill is still awaiting a vote. The White House is also saying that a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shutdown-mccarthy-congress-house-republicans-biden-249d83636e9d61cdd2aabdf34a129514">possible government shutdown because of House Republicans</a>&nbsp;would undermine railway safety.

The projects include track upgrades and bridge repairs, in addition to improving the connectivity among railways and making routes less vulnerable to extreme weather.

In Nebraska, more than $15.2 million will modernize the Cornhusker Railroad, improving track, grade crossings, and a railcar repair facility through the Cornhusker Railroad Regional Connectivity Project. Investments will result in safer and more efficient operations, including improved interchanging of regional trains with Class I railroads.

Among the projects is $178.4 million to restore passenger service in parts of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi along the Gulf of Mexico for the first time since Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

“This is a significant milestone, representing years of dedicated efforts to reconnect our communities after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina,” Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., said in a statement. “Restoring passenger rail service will create jobs, improve quality of life, and offer a convenient travel option for tourists, contributing to our region’s economic growth and vitality.”

The grant should make it possible to restore passenger service to the Gulf Coast after Amtrak reached an agreement with CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads last year to clear the way for passenger trains to resume operating on the tracks the freight railroads own.

“We’ve been fighting to return passenger trains to the Gulf Coast since it was knocked offline by Hurricane Katrina. That 17-year journey has been filled with obstacles and frustration — but also moments of joy, where local champions and national advocates were able to come together around the vision of a more connected Gulf Coast region,” Rail Passengers Association President &amp; CEO Jim Mathews said.

In one of the biggest other grants, the Palouse River &amp; Coulee City Railroad in Washington state will get $72.8 million to upgrade the track and related infrastructure to allow that rail line to handle modern 286,000-pound railcars.

A project in Kentucky will receive $29.5 million to make improvements to 280 miles of track and other infrastructure along the Paducah and Louisville Railway.

And in Tennessee, $23.7 million will go to helping upgrade about 42 bridges on 10 different short-line railroads.

White House anounces $15 million in railroad funding for Nebraska

NORTH PLATTE - The Lincoln County Raceway is hosting their first ever Valve Cover Races on October 28th. The event geared towards a driver teaming up with 4-5 kids and competing in the races. The drivers will be the kid's mentors throughout the whole event from getting together to working on getting ready for the valve cover races and being a role model for their team.&nbsp;

Kids will receive a T-Shirt with their name and team name on it that they can wear to the day of the races. It is free for kids to participate in the event. Registration ends on October 1st. GRANT NEB. - The Perkin's County Chamber of Commerce hosted there second drive in movie this past Saturday. The movie featured in this months showing was the 2021 Disney release Jungle Cruise starred Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson. The event was held at the west side of the Perkin's County Fairgrounds.

This past showing was a free will donation and offered free popcorn. The Perkin's County Chamber of Commerce goal is to show one movie a month with weather permitting. The first movie they showed was back in August when it showed Top Gun: Maverick. Next's month showing and time has yet to be released.

LINCOLN — A 103-pound mountain lion was shot and killed Thursday on the northern edge of Valentine, only a couple of days after the cat had disrupted a local golf tournament.

The cat, identified as a “subadult” male, had been spotted on a trail camera crossing the eighth-hole green on Tuesday morning while an invitation was underway for middle school girls at the Frederick Peak Golf Course.

“I was like, ‘Oh, crap, that could be a problem,’ ” said Jacob Fuehrer, superintendent of the unique, 10-hole course.

Radio station KVSH reported at least two other sightings of a lion in Valentine&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kvsh.com/archives/27781">this week</a>.

Officials with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission worked with the Valentine Police department to dispatch the mountain lion, which was within city limits, on Thursday.

Sam Wilson, the commission’s program manager of carnivores, said the lion was removed in accordance with the agency’s Mountain Lion Response Plan. It calls for mountain lions that are within city limits to be removed for the safety of residents.

Wilson said lions aren’t shot with tranquilizer guns and relocated because public safety is the top priority, and tranquilizers can take several minutes to take effect, allowing an animal to escape.

Zoos, he said, won’t typically take in a wild mountain lion because they don’t do well in captivity.

Fuehrer said Tuesday’s golf tournament had to be cancelled midway through the 18-hole event. None of the contestants, he said, actually saw the lion.

It was sad, Fuehrer said, to learn that the animal had to be shot, “but I understand that they have to do it.”

Wilson added there have been no additional sightings of mountain lions in the Omaha area following&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/08/06/nebraskas-no-1-champion-of-mountain-lions-ernie-chambers-weighs-in-on-omaha-sightings/">a spate of reports in late July and early August.&nbsp;</a>

The 2023 class of Mid-Plains Community College Licensed Practical Nursing students has achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX-PN exams.&nbsp;

The class consists of the following graduates:&nbsp;

“I cannot be prouder of our nursing students,”&nbsp;said Dr. Kathy Harrison, MPCC director of nursing. “This is a major accomplishment for the students, our faculty and the college. The faculty have worked hard to get these students where they need to be, and the students put a lot of hours in studying to attain this achievement.”

The NCLEX exam tests the competency of nursing school graduates in the U.S. and Canada, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, which develops the exam.&nbsp;Its purpose is to determine if a graduate can safely begin practice as an entry level nurse.

The exam tests application and analysis using the knowledge grads learned in college and also tests their abilities to think critically and make informed decisions.

The LPN news follows on the heels of an announcement last month that the 2023 MPCC Associate Degree Nursing students also achieved the milestone.&nbsp;

It’s the first time in the college’s records that both ADN and LPN students from Mid-Plains have received a 100 percent pass rate in the same year.&nbsp;

“I am so incredibly proud of our LPN students for their hard work in achieving a 100 percent pass rate on their recent NCLEX exam,”&nbsp;said Dr. Jody Tomanek, vice president of Academic Affairs and NPCC. “The faculty have worked hard to educate our students to get them to this point, and I thank them for their hard work as well.”
