St. Pat's, Gothenburg win Team State Titles at State Cross Country, Ogallala & Perkins County bring home individual Gold Medals

From October 14th-October 19th, The North Platte Police Department received multiple reports of graffiti throughout town. With the help of surveillance video provided by members of the community, officers were able to identify the suspects as being four juvenile males. 

On October 19th, all 4 juveniles, ages ranging from 15 to 17, were interviewed at the police department where they confessed to the crimes. There were a total of 21 incidents that involved graffiti reported, resulting in a total of 33 citations issued.

&nbsp;Gering, Neb. - Nebraska tourism industry members honored the hard work and dedication of their peers at the Celebrate Nebraska Awards Banquet on Thursday at the Gering Civic Center in Gering. The event wrapped up the annual Nebraska Tourism Conference organized by the Nebraska Tourism Commission and the Gering Visitors Bureau.

The&nbsp;2023 Henry Fonda Award, the state's highest tourism award representing leadership, vision and dedication to the tourism industry, went to&nbsp;Marcos Eduardo Mora Barrientos. Raised in South Omaha, Barrientos is from one of the largest Mexican American families in the city and is a pillar in the Latino community. He and his family's contributions to the arts, culture, business and music scene in South Omaha are well known. He is a multi-talented musician who is an accomplished performer and teacher, with his talents including guitar, bass, mandolin, percussion and more.

Barrientos manages two massively successful festivals as event coordinator: Cinco de Mayo Omaha and Fiestas Patrias Omaha. The Cinco de Mayo Festival has gone on to be the largest local festival in Omaha history, attracting 250,000 people over a three-day period while sending $7.5 million back into the local economy. Proceeds also go into the community to support small businesses and scholarships.

The&nbsp;Friend of Tourism Award&nbsp;went to&nbsp;Miranda Becker&nbsp;of Hartington Economic Development. Becker took on a key role in organizing communities and tourism boards in Northeast Nebraska for the successful "Dare to Take the Backroads" project, which marketed local communities to encourage tourism and pride by elevating local voices and attractions. Becker provided strong leadership to foster collaboration between eight communities to help bring the project to completion.

The&nbsp;Visionary Award&nbsp;went to JT Martin. Martin is a fifth-generation Nebraskan who moved back to his home state in 2020 after a decade working in media and advertising in San Francisco and New York. He began documenting his Nebraska travels on social media on his&nbsp;<a href="https://visitnebraska.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=30cc1cad235a879fac111c22b&amp;id=44d664fc4e&amp;e=65d6a9d786" target="_blank">@thecornbelt</a>&nbsp;account, and his videos were viewed 15 million times over the summer of 2023. His videos promote local destinations and trip ideas and encourage visitors and locals alike to explore and experience all Nebraska has to offer.

The award for&nbsp;Outstanding Tourism Attraction&nbsp;went to&nbsp;The RiverFront&nbsp;in Omaha. The development combines three downtown parks along the Missouri River and has brought transformation to the area. The innovative, wide-open space in an urban environment for outdoor activities includes Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland of America Park and Lewis &amp; Clark Landing. Since its opening in July of 2022, Gene Leahy Mall alone has hosted an estimated million-plus visitors. The park is a hub for events, activities and gatherings of all kinds.

The award for&nbsp;Outstanding Tourism Event (city population of 10,000 and above)&nbsp;went to&nbsp;Hear Grand Island. The event is a 10-week summer series of concerts in the city's Railside Plaza. Since its beginning in 2016, the series has grown each year and saw an average audience of more than 3,200 each week in 2023. The event now includes features like a beer garden, food trucks and artistic events. This unique gathering is free to the public, thanks to more than 7,000 volunteer hours and more than 30 local business sponsorships.

The award for&nbsp;Outstanding Tourism Event (city population of 9,999 and below)&nbsp;went to&nbsp;Junkstock&nbsp;in Waterloo. Since its start in 2012, Junkstock has grown into one of the best-known vintage festivals in the United States. A gathering of more than 250 vendors and artisans and more than 60 food vendors, the event is a promoter of local businesses. While supporting tourism and the regional arts scene, it has drawn strong annual attendance figures, upwards of 30,000 people. The festival also gives back to the community, including through charitable donations and free weekends for nurses, military, first responders, teachers and more. Beyond its reputation in Nebraska, Junkstock has earned national recognition, including USA Today's 10 Fall Festivals Worth Traveling For and Midwest Living's Can't-Miss Midwest Flea Market.

The award for&nbsp;Outstanding Marketing Campaign&nbsp;went to&nbsp;North Platte's National Avocado Launching Championship. North Platte faced a challenge in its first year of its event, beyond planning and launching it. Drawing visitors and contestants to an odd and quirky gathering proved to be quite the task. A multi-channel marketing approach included a Super Bowl ad in the Rapid City, South Dakota area, plus web, traditional and social media advertising. The Super Bowl ad led to more than half a million post engagements, and total paid efforts led to more than three million impressions and more than 2,000 leads. The result was 32 teams registered for the first-time event and a successful contest overall.

The award for&nbsp;Outstanding Agritourism or Ecotourism Entity&nbsp;went to&nbsp;Nelson Produce Farm&nbsp;in Valley. Nelson Produce Farm is family-owned and gives guests an interactive experience. Things to do range from picking fresh produce, meeting barnyard animals, trike and barrel train riding and so much more. The farm also hosts several festivals, field trips and educational opportunities. Nelson Produce Farm works as a vital tourism and education bridge between urban Omaha and rural Nebraska.

The&nbsp;Nebraska Passport Champion's Choice Award&nbsp;went to&nbsp;Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park&nbsp;in Royal. Participants in the 2023&nbsp;<a href="https://visitnebraska.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=30cc1cad235a879fac111c22b&amp;id=047751d866&amp;e=65d6a9d786" target="_blank">Nebraska Passport</a>&nbsp;voted the park their favorite of the 70 stops in the program. Visitors get the unique chance to see the past frozen in the present day. Fossilized animals are resting in place at an ancient watering hole where a volcanic eruption millions of years ago covered them. Passporters enjoyed learning the history of the area, as well as seeing in-progress excavations that still happen to this day.

Additionally, the&nbsp;Nebraska Travel Association&nbsp;gave out their Crystal Compass Award to longtime industry member Kevin Howard.&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte faced a challenge in its first year of its event, beyond planning and launching it. Drawing visitors and contestants to an odd and quirky gathering proved to be quite the task. A multi-channel marketing approach included a Super Bowl ad in the Rapid City, South Dakota area, plus web, traditional and social media advertising. The Super Bowl ad led to more than half a million post engagements, and total paid efforts led to more than three million impressions and more than 2,000 leads. The result was 32 teams registered for the first-time event and a successful contest overall.The award for&nbsp;Outstanding Agritourism or Ecotourism Entity&nbsp;went to&nbsp;Nelson Produce Farm&nbsp;in Valley. Nelson Produce Farm is family-owned and gives guests an interactive experience. Things to do range from picking fresh produce, meeting barnyard animals, trike and barrel train riding and so much more. The farm also hosts several festivals, field trips and educational opportunities. Nelson Produce Farm works as a vital tourism and education bridge between urban Omaha and rural Nebraska.The&nbsp;Nebraska Passport Champion's Choice Award&nbsp;went to&nbsp;Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park&nbsp;in Royal. Participants in the 2023&nbsp;<a href="https://visitnebraska.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=30cc1cad235a879fac111c22b&amp;id=047751d866&amp;e=65d6a9d786" target="_blank">Nebraska Passport</a>&nbsp;voted the park their favorite of the 70 stops in the program. Visitors get the unique chance to see the past frozen in the present day. Fossilized animals are resting in place at an ancient watering hole where a volcanic eruption millions of years ago covered them. Passporters enjoyed learning the history of the area, as well as seeing in-progress excavations that still happen to this day.Additionally, the&nbsp;Nebraska Travel Association&nbsp;gave out their Crystal Compass Award to longtime industry member Kevin Howard.&nbsp;&nbsp;

City of Kimball Electric Department will be trimming trees in October and November

On Thursday, October 19, 2023, at approximately 3:10 P.M. the North Platte 911 Center received notification of 5 juveniles that ran from Greater Nebraska Youth Center located in the 2300 block of East 2nd&nbsp;Street.&nbsp; Officers were dispatched to the area in an attempt to locate the juveniles.&nbsp; While Officers were canvassing the area, the 911 Center sent an alert to the public to be on the lookout for the juveniles.

At approximately 5:15 P.M., the 911 Center received a report from a citizen of suspicious activity in the 2100 block of East E Street.&nbsp; Upon arrival into the area, Officers found all 5 juveniles and detained them.&nbsp; The juveniles were then returned to the Greater Nebraska Youth Center.

The juveniles ages range from 12 to 17 and are court-ordered to be placed at the Greater Nebraska Youth Center.&nbsp; The juveniles are from various communities throughout Nebraska.&nbsp; Due to their ages, lack of knowledge of the area, and resources the North Platte 911 Center placed an alert to the public for the juveniles safety.&nbsp;

We would like to thank the public for their assistance in the safe return of the juveniles.

LINCOLN — A group of 26 advocates from across Nebraska is gathering this week in Ogallala, kicking off a six-month program that will help build leadership and fresh strategy for early childhood care legislation and policy in the state.

Organized by the nonpartisan&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.firstfivenebraska.org/">First Five</a>&nbsp;Nebraska research and advocacy organization, this year marks the fifth cohort of what is known as the annual Nebraska Early Childhood Policy Leadership Academy.

Participants selected for the latest class range from child care providers to teachers to public health professionals. They’ll gather monthly for a daylong workshop in different parts of the state, exploring trends, listening to experts and discussing needs in respective communities.

In the end, they’ll identify possible solutions to advance the healthy development of children and families.

“The PLA goes beyond policymaking,” said Jodi-Renee Girón, First Five’s outreach adviser, who facilitates the academy. “It develops skilled, knowledgeable and credible movement builders who are prepared to lead change in their local communities.”

Girón said that quality child care has<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/03/27/kids-can-makes-11-million-move-but-concern-looms-for-broader-statewide-child-care-needs/">&nbsp;long been key</a>&nbsp;to a family’s economic mobility — and to workforce participation. But more recently, state business and civic leaders elevated the discussion to among the top concerns facing the state.

For instance, State Sen. Wendy DeBoer of Bennington, chair of the Legislature’s planning committee, said child care, housing and water issues were propelled to the top of a list of most pressing issues in a recent survey of state lawmakers.

Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry leaders have said often that affordable and quality child care is among priority issues to&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/05/18/child-care-services-spotlighted-as-key-to-reversing-nebraska-workforce-shortage/">be confronted</a>&nbsp;to fill labor force gaps that hamper economic growth.

With the brighter spotlight on the industry she works in, Girón expects the work of the leadership academy to gain traction.

Among priorities of the coming year, she said, is reducing the time it takes for public agencies to complete fingerprinting and background checks on child care applicants.

State Sen. Teresa Ibach of Sumner, in working with the First Five group, called for an interim study to examine the criminal history check process required by state law for the child care workforce.

Legislative Resolution 191 seeks to identify solutions that can involve the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Nebraska State Patrol.

Today, Girón said, it can take up to eight weeks for employers to get the all-clear for a new hire. Potential employees during that wait often move on to a different job, she said, adding that child care facilities already have a tough time recruiting workers.

Girón said that an end to a federal stream of pandemic-related child care funding also has local providers seeking ways to ensure that families have access to quality care for their children.

Since the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.firstfivenebraska.org/what-we-do/policy-leadership-academy/">academy</a>&nbsp;began, more than 125 participants representing 35 Nebraska communities have graduated.&nbsp;Girón said the event is supported by the Buffett Early Childhood Fund. This year’s class brings together people from rural and urban parts of the state, from Scottsbluff to Omaha.

Past participants have gone on to play key roles in public policy conversations such as the reauthorization of the school readiness tax credit in 2023 and eligibility standards for a child care subsidy.

“Child care is such an important piece of the state infrastructure,” said Girón. “I’m excited it’s moving more to the forefront of community conversations.”

Early childhood policy academy kicks off in Ogallala, sets pace for fresh strategies in Nebraska

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, in Room 213 of McMillen Hall on the McCook Community College Campus, 1205 E. Third St., McCook, Neb.

Board Chair Ben Lashley started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Lashley, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Kirk Crawley, Cynthia Duncan, Ted Klug Jr., Ernie Mehl, Kent Miller, Kim Korgan, Tyler Pribbeno and Tricia Schaffer. Jo Etta Brown and Matthew Broz were absent and excused.

Also present were NPCC student trustee Reece Halley and MCC student trustee Graci Nelson.

b. MCC Baseball Head Coach Jon Olsen, MCC Volleyball Head Coach Hayley Kobza and MCC Golf Head Coach Tyler Loop were recognized for their team’s accomplishments over the past year. Baseball had 33 wins during the 2022-23 regular season – the most in the past decade, and the 22-12 record against Region IX opponents was the best-ever. Kobza recently achieved her 150th win and has three players ranked Top 10 in the nation. Golf won every tournament except nationals last spring and ended up 16th in the nation – the team’s best-ever finish.

c. Board member Kent Miller reminded everyone to attend the&nbsp;Nebraska Community College Association Annual Meeting Nov. 5-6 in North Platte.

MPCC Board of Governors meeting wrap-up

NORTH PLATTE - The fourth annual Big Idea North Platte event was held on Wednesday in Venue 304. The event, which is ran by the North Platte Young Professionals awarded the top prize of $10,000 to Pam Farr who entered the competition as a the wild card entry which her idea was Daily Bread. North Platte St. Pats sophomore Logan Robirds was awarded a $2500 scholarship to Mid-Plains Community College.

Farr is a Spanish teacher at North Platte St. Pats and was in attendance as her husband Adam Farr was one of nine finalist in the community category. During the social hour, it was announced to the crowd that a wild card entry was available and after a discussion with her mom, she decided to enter. She got the idea from her mom as her father had a dream of opening a bakery called Daily Bread.

"I was talking with my mom and when they announced they are going to do a wild card and she was like oh you should do what your dad dreamed of and by dream, I mean he was actually sleeping when it came to him," said Pam Farr.&nbsp;Farr says the next steps of making her idea a reality is creating a business plan, talking with community members, and her family.

The Youth category had seven finalist all battling for scholarships to Mid-Plains Community College. Robirds, 15 presented his idea of a switch charger to the crowd and judges. The charger allows you to charge one device from another device. "Let's say you have a dead phone but your grandma has a 100% charged phone, you just plug this double end charger and you can charge your phone," said Logan Robirds.

The event, which is ran by the North Platte Young Professionals awarded the top prize of $10,000 to Pam Farr who entered the competition as a the wild card entry which her idea was Daily Bread. North Platte St. Pats sophomore Logan Robirds was awarded a $2500 scholarship to Mid-Plains Community College.<figure>

 </figure>Farr is a Spanish teacher at North Platte St. Pats and was in attendance as her husband Adam Farr was one of nine finalist in the community category. During the social hour, it was announced to the crowd that a wild card entry was available and after a discussion with her mom, she decided to enter. She got the idea from her mom as her father had a dream of opening a bakery called Daily Bread."I was talking with my mom and when they announced they are going to do a wild card and she was like oh you should do what your dad dreamed of and by dream, I mean he was actually sleeping when it came to him," said Pam Farr.&nbsp;Farr says the next steps of making her idea a reality is creating a business plan, talking with community members, and her family.<figure>

The charger allows you to charge one device from another device. "Let's say you have a dead phone but your grandma has a 100% charged phone, you just plug this double end charger and you can charge your phone," said Logan Robirds.The idea of the switch charger just came to Robirds mind. North Platte’s senior citizens will benefit from a food drive conducted by North Platte Community College’s Leadership and Team Development class.

Students are collecting canned green beans and corn, instant potatoes, boxed stuffing and dessert mixes as part of a community service project. Items will be turned over to the North Platte Senior Center for distribution.

Donations will be accepted through Oct. 27. They can be dropped off at the Welcome Centers on NPCC’s north and south campuses, the Espresso Shop by Caravan, Westfield Floral and NebraskaLand Bank.

&nbsp;(NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol arrested five people following a pursuit with a stolen vehicle Tuesday in Keith County.

At approximately 12:10 p.m. MT, a trooper observed a westbound Nissan Versa speeding on Interstate 80. The trooper also received information that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Iowa. The vehicle exited I-80 at the Paxton interchange and the trooper attempted a traffic stop. The driver exited the vehicle and appeared to be complying with the trooper, until one of the passengers exited the vehicle and entered the driver’s seat. The original driver then entered a passenger seat and the vehicle fled. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The vehicle fled westbound on I-80. Additional units were able to successfully deploy stop sticks to bring the vehicle to a stop near mile marker 140, just west of Paxton. All five subjects inside the vehicle were then taken into custody without further incident.

The original driver, an 18-year-old male, was arrested for obstructing a peace officer and no operator’s license. The second driver, Yovani Alfonso Rivas, 32, was arrested for willful reckless driving, flight to avoid arrest, and no operator’s license. The three other subjects were identified as Carlos Alberto, 26, Jordan Medina, 26, and an 18-year-old male. All five occupants are from Venezuela. All five were arrested for possession of stolen property $5,000+ and lodged in Keith County Jail.

The Keith County Sheriff’s Office assisted in this incident.

The event is free to the public as there are nine finalists for the community category and seven for the youth category. A cash bar and food trucks will be available. Audience members are encouraged to bring their phone so they can also vote for the winner. The finalist in the community category is battling for prize money while the youth category is battling for scholarships.

Eagle Communications through the Schmidt Foundation has pledged $20,000 for the community category. First place will receive $10,000, second place receives $7,000 and finally third place receives $3,000. There are nine finalists for the community category.

Youth category finalist is looking to win scholarships that are made possible by Mid-Plains Community College. First place will receive $2,500, second place is $1,500 and third place is $1,000. The scholarships can be used at any Mid-Plains Community College campus. There are seven finalists for the youth category.

First place will receive $10,000, second place receives $7,000 and finally third place receives $3,000. There are nine finalists for the community category.Youth category finalist is looking to win scholarships that are made possible by Mid-Plains Community College. First place will receive $2,500, second place is $1,500 and third place is $1,000. The scholarships can be used at any Mid-Plains Community College campus. There are seven finalists for the youth category.

The City of Kearney announces that 30th Avenue from 11th Street to the southern end of Kearney High School will be closed Saturday, October 21, 2023 beginning at 5:00 a.m. The purpose of the closure is for the Nebraska State Marching Band Festival at Kearney High School.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We are currently looking for a runaway juvenile female, Janelle Torres-Cropper.  Janelle is 5'3", approximately 150 lbs and has black hair with red highlights.  Janelle was wearing a black t-shirt with black pants and black shoes when she went missing. 

 Janelle was last seen on October 15th around 3:30 pm.  If anyone has any information on Janelle's whereabouts, please contact the North Platte Police Department or Lincoln County Crime Stoppers.
