The OVFD was paged for a structure fire in the city. Fire Officer in the vicinity reported smoke issuing from building vents and opening. Dispatch automatically upgraded to county wide page. (This procedure is collaborative and alerts KLFD, Paxton, Brule, KC EMS, LEO and KC EM all simultaneously now instead of how it was done prior)OVFD Apparatus - Command, Engine, Ladder, Rescue, BLS ambu

KC EM, OPD, KCSO, and NSP responded. LEOs closed Hwy 30 and diverted traffic for the incident. Electric and Gas Utilities were requested to assist. KC EM and Drone Pilot flew the FLIR drone, greatly increasing safety and efficiency for roof top operations. FF were able to gain control of a potentially catastrophic attic fire in about 20 minutes. Crews were on scene approximately 4 hrs overhauling and extinguishing hot spots. FF entered structure during suppression ops to place salvage covers and protect business computers, etc. EMS provided rehab for on scene personnel. (This process is essential as FF are rotated in and out of an incident. 

When they come out, vitals are checked, hydration is performed, and the personnel cools down, relaxes and if any anomaly or problems with any FF health is detected, EMS provides any intervention, including transport if necessary. If you drive by or observe FF sitting under an awning or in chairs adjacent to an incident, they are ”re habbing” This is how we keep our FF from becoming statistics or a Line of Duty Death. Cardiac issues/heart attack are a leading cause of FF deaths at incidents or immediately after and rehab is essential to help prevent this.)NESFM is investigating the incident. No civilian or FF injuries were reported to IC. Building not habitable at this time but not destroyed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Air Force commit Harry Caskey had carried the rock 15 times for 95 yards and 1 touchdown. The Indians, who switched to a heavy rush offense has ran for 967 yards through 4 weeks, averaging 242 rushing yards a game. Caskey and Rezac both have a team high 418 rushing yards.

Alliance is led by first year head coach TD Stein, the former Chadron High Standout and two-time all state honorable mention. Stein would snap Alliance's 23 game losing streak in their week 2 matchup against Gordon-Rushville, where the Bulldogs won 24-20. OVFD has fire under control at Humphrey's Auto

The Mid-Plains Community College Imperial Campus will offer a personal property inheritance workshop Oct. 11.

“Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate?” will be led by Brandi Hilton-Hagemann, extension educator for Rural Prosperity Nebraska.

The program is designed for people of all ages seeking useful information about the inheritance of personal property of low monetary but high sentimental value. It will provide research-informed practical strategies to protect family relationships when passing on personal possessions.

Items such as pie plates, quilts, jewelry, photographs, books and documents of family significance are often overlooked during estate planning sessions because they are considered non-titled property, yet decisions about those items can become major challenges for family members.

Hilton-Hagemann will help participants set personal goals, decide what is fair for their family situation, discuss why belongings have different meaning for various family members, consider distribution options and consequences and practice conflict resolution tactics.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The class is scheduled for 5:30-8 p.m. at the MPCC Imperial Campus in Imperial.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to get their flu shots and COVID-19 booster shots to protect against respiratory illnesses this winter. Cases of COVID-19 were minimal in the health district over the summer, with an average of 2 cases per week. SWNPHD saw a small bump in case numbers at the end of summer and expects another wave of widespread infections during the fall and winter.

Influenza (flu) and COVID-19 are caused by viruses that are ever evolving and changing. This means that as our immune systems fight off infection, the viruses adapt to avoid being detected. When large numbers of people are infected at the same time as happens with flu and COVID, the viruses change more quickly. This is why researchers work to provide updated shots often, to better protect against the more recent strains of flu and COVID-19 that have been circulating.

Influenza (flu) is a potentially fatal, contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. Flu vaccines prevent and diminish the severity of flu-related illness, reducing the need for medical care and hospitalization.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most people infected with the virus experience mild respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some people become seriously ill and require medical attention. The COVID vaccines significantly reduce the risk of developing severe COVID-19 complications and hospitalization, protecting against avoidable severe illness or death.

Everyone ages 6 months and older are recommended to get the updated flu shots and Covid shots, which will be available at SWNPHD offices in McCook and Ogallala starting in October. For those who recently had a COVID shot, they can get the updated shot two months after their last dose. 

According to the CDC, it is safe and acceptable to receive COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine during the same appointment. These are separate shots and are not combined into one shot. Check with your healthcare provider if you have questions about getting multiple vaccinations at one time.

GRANT, NEB. - The city of Grant has announced they are waiting for parts to repair the trash truck. Due to parts not arriving, trash pickup has been delayed. MPCC Ogallala hosting cake decoration event on October 2nd

Hershey Public Schools has completed Phases 2 &amp; 3a of the renovation project which began in the fall of 2022.&nbsp; The overarching goals of phase 2 &amp; 3 were to renovate the 1959 building and to increase instructional space in all elementary classrooms.&nbsp; This included converting the 1959 gym into a K-12 Library/Media Center and collaboration space, special education, and Guidance classrooms.

 A secure entrance into the building was also constructed in Phase 2 of the renovation project. This entrance was constructed at the South Bus Doors of the 1959 portion of the building.&nbsp; This entrance is utilized during business hours and all individuals are required to enter here to meet with a receptionist before entering the building during normal business hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hershey will be hosting an Open House for all stakeholders to come and see the updates to the facilities.&nbsp; The open house will be held in conjunction with the annual PK-6 Open House on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.&nbsp; We are excited to announce that Hershey State Bank &amp; Hershey Agency will once again sponsor the event.&nbsp; The event will include a short presentation by Dr. McConnell (in the east gym), Group led tour (throughout the elementary classrooms), and a meal (South parking lot) presented by Hershey State Bank and Hershey Agency!&nbsp; The public is invited to attend either tour and are welcome to participate in all events! Parents and students are encouraged to choose a session that fits your child's grade level!&nbsp;

**Please park in the south gravel lot OR west crushed rock lot.&nbsp; The south concrete lot will be closed for the refreshments to be provided by Hershey State Bank..&nbsp; Each session will start in the East Gym!&nbsp; Enter through the South HS Commons Door.&nbsp;

The set up for this year’s Open House will include 2 sessions: 4:30-5:30 PM &amp; 5:30-6:30 PM. Each session will follow the same setup, starting with a short presentation in the (#1)east gym, followed by a teacher/principal led group tour (#2), finishing the evening with a meal (#3) sponsored by Hershey State Bank and Hershey Agency.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

If possible, we encourage PK-2 parents to attend Session I with 3-6 parents attending the second session.&nbsp; Our goal is to have equal sized groups.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Remodeling is still underway in the 1959 North restrooms and four of the 1959 high school classrooms under Phase 3b.&nbsp; Phase 3b is anticipated to be completed at the beginning of second semester.&nbsp; Phase 4 of the renovation will occur in the spring and summer of 24.&nbsp; Phase 1, the new addition is scheduled to be completed during the second semester of this school year.&nbsp;

The entire project is roughly 55,000 square feet in renovation and 30,000 square feet in new construction.&nbsp;&nbsp; Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and fire suppression have been included in the project along with other site improvements.&nbsp;

Koss Construction of Topeka, Kan. is the prime contractor. Bridge work at reference post 122+55 will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction. There will be a 12-foot width restriction in effect and the speed limit will be reduced to 65 mph. Anticipated completion is late Oct. 2023.&nbsp;

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Broken water line in Sutherland causes road closure

On 9/12/2023, a Deputy with the Garden County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop for speeding. After activating lights and sirens, a short pursuit began that ended on Main St in Lewellen. The Deputy made contact with the driver and detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, which led to a probable cause search.

Various drugs and paraphernalia were located in the vehicle and the driver was placed into custody. The driver, identified as Daisy King, was able to slip a cuff, escaped the cruiser and fled. During the search, Deputies located a male, Christopher Heater, hiding in a dumpster, who admitted to also being in the vehicle. With the help of NE State Patrol, Deuel Co SO, NE Game &amp; Parks, Oshkosh Fire Dept. and local citizens, King was apprehended approximately 4 hours after she initially fled.

Items found in the vehicle include approximately 0.9 ounces of Marijuana, a glass pipe containing Meth residue, approximately 1.2 grams of Methamphetamine and a dagger with a blade of 13.5 inches. Daisy King was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana less than 1oz, Escape, Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Prohibited Person, Failure to Obey Lawful Order, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing a Peace Officer, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Speed Limit Violation and Accessory to Felony. 

Christopher Heater was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana less than 1oz, Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Prohibited Person, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia,  Obstructing a Peace Officer, and a warrant for Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Prohibited Person x2, Attempted Burglary and Theft by Unlawful Taking $500-1,500. They are currently being held in the Garden County Jail.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The City of Grant has an ordinance stating from October 1 through March 31 of each year, it shall be unlawful for owner or operator to park or leave standing any trailer, mobile home, recreational vehicle, travel trailer, boat, boat trailer, pontoon, pontoon trailer, utility trailer, commercial trailer, pickup camper, horse trailer, or any farm or construction machinery or trailer of any kind upon the public streets or alleys of the city, except for the time reasonably necessary to load, unload or render a service. Please have all of the aforementioned off the streets by October 1st.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Podcast - Ogallala Regional Arts Council getting ready to kick off their 2023-2024 season

A man from Scottsbluff has lost his appeal with the Nebraska Supreme Court for two murders in the 1980's.

Jeff Boppre was sentenced to consecutive life sentences  after being found guilty in 1989 of the killings of Richard Valdez and Sharon Condon.

 Boppre has continued to proclaim his innocence  and  in 2021, Boppre was seeking a new trial under the notion that there was newly found evidence.&nbsp; 

However, Scotts Bluff County District Court Judge Andrea Miller dismissed the notion on Friday, saying there was no merit to his claims.

Trick-or-treating will be available from 5:30-7:30 p.m. near the college’s corn maze, west of the McDonald-Belton Building.

NPCC’s Student Life Department is offering the event to encourage community engagement and provide a fun activity leading up to Halloween.

Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team athletes explain roping chutes to Kids Klub members Friday at the Wild West Arena in North Platte.

The team hosted North Platte Public Schools’ afterschool program for an afternoon of educational programming.

Among other things, the elementary students learned about the various rodeo events, heard about the gear and tack used, tried their hands at roping, saw how bulls and horses are loaded into chutes and participated in a demonstration regarding the use of barriers in timed events.

Union Pacific’s Top Goal: Everyone Returning Home Safely to Loved Ones

Two Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team members are the recipients of $800 educational scholarships from NEBRASKAland Days. The students are DJ Martian, of Bowman, N.D., and Madison McGee, of Deloraine, Manitoba, Canada.

Martian and McGee were recognized Friday night at the Wild West Arena in North Platte during the evening performance of the 2023 MPCC Stampede.

“I am extremely proud of each of these kid’s hard work and effort both in the arena and in the classroom,” said Aukai Kaai, MPCC Rodeo Team roughstock coach. “They stepped up and helped take care of practice stock when needed and help during practice without asking. They are true team leaders in and out of the arena.”

The scholarships were awarded based on the students’ performance in the arena and classroom as well as their leadership skills, volunteerism and promotion of the team.

Funding for the scholarships came from entry fees to the annual NLD Cowboy Kickball Competition in June.

Martian is a saddle bronc rider and team roper. He is studying entrepreneurship at Mid-Plains.

McGee competes in breakaway roping, team roping and barrel racing for MPCC. She is a sophomore studying Agribusiness and Business Administration.
