January 23, 2025 (North Platte, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people in southwest Nebraska as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation.

Wednesday, investigators served a search warrant at a residence in rural Lamar, in Chase County. The NSP SWAT Team was activated as part of this operation. Both occupants had active warrants for their arrest.

As the SWAT Team made verbal contact with the occupants of the home, both voluntarily exited the residence and were taken into custody. The search of the residence revealed 16 grams of methamphetamine, eight ounces of marijuana, 12 firearms, and two stolen motorcycles.

The male occupant, Kenneth Johnston, 45, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for distribution of a controlled substance, and for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of stolen property, possession of a stolen vehicle, and conspiracy to commit theft. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail. 

The female occupant, Lindsey Bartorelli, 39, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for theft and lodged in Chase County Jail.

NSP investigators were assisted by troopers from several divisions of NSP, as well as the CODE Task Force, Imperial Police Department, and Chase County Sheriff’s Office.

Two Arrested in Chase County Narcotics Investigation



Lincoln, Neb. — Nebraska LEAD Program Class 42 recently returned from an impactful International Study/Travel Seminar to Romania, Hungary and Poland, held from January 3-17, 2025. The two-week journey provided 28 fellows with an immersive opportunity to explore the historical, cultural, religious and agricultural dimensions of these Eastern European nations.

“The International Study/Travel Seminar is a cornerstone of the Nebraska LEAD Program, offering Fellows an invaluable global perspective that enhances their leadership skills and understanding of agriculture in a global context,” said Kurtis Harms, Nebraska LEAD Program director. “This year’s visit to Romania, Hungary and Poland provided meaningful experiences and connections that will undoubtedly shape our Fellows as future leaders.”

The seminar featured a diverse itinerary, including visits to farms, businesses and historical sites. Highlights of the trip included:

“Visiting these countries opened my eyes to the shared challenges and opportunities we face in agriculture,” said LEAD 42 Fellow Jake Werner, a senior merchandiser with ADM. “Seeing how farms in Romania and Poland operate and hearing their stories inspired me to think differently about how we approach our agricultural systems back home. The visit also helped me appreciate the local and international markets we have in the United States.”

Fellow Michelle Bose, a farmer and closing agent with Dvoracek Title, added, “Walking through Auschwitz-Birkenau and Schindler’s Factory was an emotional experience that deepened my appreciation for the resilience of humanity and the importance of leadership grounded in empathy and understanding.”

The Nebraska LEAD Program continues to prepare agricultural leaders for tomorrow through its comprehensive leadership development curriculum. The International Study/Travel Seminar serves as a capstone experience, equipping participants with global perspectives that enrich Nebraska’s agricultural and rural communities.

“One of the most important factors in becoming a good leader is being able to get outside of your bubble or your comfort zone and experience life through the eyes others,” said Director Harms. “This enhanced understanding of people and cultures around the world hopefully lead to better decision-making and greater relationships with others.”

These results include $40 million of labor expense related to the ratification of a crew staffing agreement. The Hot Sheets: January 23rd, 2025

Lexington, Neb, - A Lexington man has been arrested and charged with first degree homicide.

According to the Lexington Police Department (LPD), around 10:45pm on Tuesday evening, LPD officers were dispatched to the Cypress Lane area in Lexington for a verbal altercation.

Officers arrived on scene and made contact with the caller and observed a silver two door vehicle stalled in the front yard of the home.&nbsp; Preliminary investigation showed it was determined there was an adult male subject inside of the vehicle and that he was deceased. 

LPD states officers also observed numerous bullet holes in the windshield and front area of the vehicle. The Lexington Police Department Investigators were then called out to process the scene. Officers and Investigators located physical evidence at the scene as well as conducted follow up interviews with witnesses. 

A 33-year-old Lexington man identified as Aristh D. Rodriguez Linares was arrested and booked into the Dawson County Jail on suspicion of First-Degree Murder, Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony, and Discharging a Firearm into a Vehicle or Person.

The Lexington Police Department was assisted on scene by the Dawson County Sheriff's Office, the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office and the South-Central Area Law Enforcement Services. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week. The name of the victim is being withheld pending family notification.

 </figure>Lexington, Neb, - A Lexington man has been arrested and charged with first degree homicide.According to the Lexington Police Department (LPD), around 10:45pm on Tuesday evening, LPD officers were dispatched to the Cypress Lane area in Lexington for a verbal altercation.Officers arrived on scene and made contact with the caller and observed a silver two door vehicle stalled in the front yard of the home.&nbsp; Preliminary investigation showed it was determined there was an adult male subject inside of the vehicle and that he was deceased. LPD states officers also observed numerous bullet holes in the windshield and front area of the vehicle. The Lexington Police Department Investigators were then called out to process the scene. Officers and Investigators located physical evidence at the scene as well as conducted follow up interviews with witnesses. A 33-year-old Lexington man identified as Aristh D. This professional development was held in conjunction with the Nebraska FFA Alumni and Supporters Conference.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Participants traveled from across Nebraska and South Dakota to participate in this excellent opportunity for intense professional development. The institute provided experience in a full year of curriculum for Animal Health and Veterinary Science. This professional development opportunity was funded, in part, by the Nebraska FFA Foundation which Miss Aylward received a scholarship from to attend. The curriculum was written by CASE 4 Learning. CASE is an acronym for Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education and is an initiative of the National Council for Agricultural Education (The Council.)&nbsp;

CASE 4 Learning is committed to designing an inquiry-based agricultural curriculum that meets the current demands of teachers, students, and industry. CASE 4 Learning provides comprehensive professional development and workshops for new and seasoned teachers to achieve lifetime certification, learn new coursework, and build a community of support. Wauneta, Neb. - Local first responder crews responded to a structure fire early Tuesday morning around 4:00 am. The Wauneta Fire Chief stated on a social media post that no one was inside the structure and there were no injuries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Responding and assisting at the scene was Imperial Fire, Palisade Fire, and Wauneta EMS.&nbsp;

Crews respond to early Tuesday morning structure fire in Southwest Nebraska

North Platte, Neb. - On 01-22-25 at around 7:00 A.M. Officers from the North Platte Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 1500 block of West 9th Street, on the report of a subject who threatened a family member with a flare gun and discharged the flare gun out of a window, setting a neighbor’s lawn on fire. The subject hid in a closet and refused to come out. 

While negotiations were being attempted, the subject once again discharged the flare gun into the street, officers were able to take the subject into custody. The adult male was taken to GPH and placed into Emergency Protective Custody.

North Platte, Neb. -&nbsp;On 01-21-25, officers responded to 900 Autumn Park Drive on the report of a male inside an apartment who threatened himself and others with a firearm. The apartment containing the suspect was secured and residents from surrounding apartments were evacuated. Negotiations with the subject were attempted. 

Entry was gained into the apartment and the suspect was found deceased. Because the apartment had been secured by the North Platte Police Department, possibly prior to the subject’s death, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department was contacted and will conduct the death investigation in order to meet the statutory obligations of the grand jury process.

Student members of the music club will sing to your loved ones on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday Feb. 12-14 between 12:00-2:00 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.

The cost is $20 for community telegrams, or $5 for on campus telegrams. This is a fundraiser for the NPCC chapter of the National Association for Music Education.

The river antlerless season was shortened due to reduced deer numbers across much of the state. That season now aligns with the rest of the antlerless seasons, and all of them closed Jan. 15.

Lincoln County Board of Commissioners 01-21 Agenda

Holbrook, Neb.- A man was found deceased in a ditch outside of Holbrook, according to officials.&nbsp;

According to the Furnas County Sheriff's Office (FCSO), around 1:15pm on Friday, FCSO were dispatched to a report of a man lying in a ditch northwest of Holbrook.&nbsp;

The FCSO states the caller reported to the 911 dispatch that the male subject was deceased. Law enforcement on scene searched the surrounding area and found the man had stranded his car in a stubble field, about one mile from the location he was found.&nbsp;

The initial investigation indicates no foul play was involved. An autopsy has been ordered. The identification of the man is being withheld pending notification of family, according to a FCSO press release.&nbsp;

Ainsworth, Neb. - Law enforcement, first responders were dispatched to the Grand Theatre in Ainsworth over the weekend for a bomb threat which turned out to be a hoax.

According to the Brown County Sheriff's Office (BCSO), The BCSO, Rock Co Sheriff’s Office, Ainsworth Volunteer Firemen, and numerous NSP officers responded to a report of a bomb that was placed in the Ainsworth Grand Theater Saturday evening.&nbsp;

The BCSO states the incident was the result of a false swatting call.&nbsp;

The BCSO would like to thank the volunteers of the  Ainsworth Grand Theater for their quick action to call 911 with details of what the caller reported.  As well as thank all agencies who responded to the call.

The event runs from 11:00am - 2:00pm and costs $5 at the door to get in. That $5 paid will let you taste all the chili/meats being served. The event is in honor of Ed "Caller" Clafin. The Lil' Guardians will be on location selling drinks and cinnamon rolls. Attendees will have the chance to vote on the best chili/soup, rib/meat and best decorated booth.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Two new members were sworn onto the Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors Wednesday evening.

Molly Jeffres, of Ogallala, and&nbsp;Megan McGown, of Brady, both newly elected ran unopposed in the November General Election.

They join nine other members on the board including reelected members Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Ted Klug, Jr. and Kent Miller who are continuing in their service. Among other things, they will be responsible for leading the college through policy creation and initiation and through articulation and evaluation of the college’s scope, mission, values and legislated priorities.

Jeffres replaces Jo Etta Brown, of Ogallala, in representing District 2.

Jeffres is the Community Development Coordinator for Keith County Area Development.

In her role at KCAD she works to enhance economic opportunities and strengthen community connections throughout Keith County fostering growth and collaboration.

Jeffres is an Ogallala native and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, specializing in management.

With a passion for creative placemaking and sustainable development, she works to shape projects that celebrate the region's cultural and historical assets.

Her community work includes leading the Keith County First Impressions committee and the Western Trails Creative District committee.&nbsp; Jeffres is also co-host of the regional Community Catalyst program.&nbsp;

As a new board member Jeffres said, “I am most looking forward to contributing to the success and growth of Mid-Plains Community College by supporting its mission to provide accessible, high-quality education and opportunities for students.”

McGown takes over the District 5 seat for Ernie Mehl.

McGown serves as the Chief Development Officer for Great Plains Health.

There she oversees strategic planning, the Health Care Foundation, marketing/public relations, outreach and initiatives to enhance access at consumer entrance points.

In her role, she also leads business development and service line growth efforts, driving the hospital's commitment to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of the region.

McGown, a Nebraska Sandhills native, spent 15 years in community and economic development. Her efforts focused on business recruitment, retention and downtown redevelopment, reflecting her dedication to fostering economic growth and vitality in the region.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Nebraska-Kearney and a graduate degree in organizational management with an emphasis in economic development from Peru State College.

McGown serves as the chair of the North Platte Area Chamber and Development Board of Directors and chairs the North Platte Community Recreation Foundation.

She is eager to contribute to advancing education and opportunity for the area.

“As someone deeply invested in the success of our communities, I look forward to collaborating with my fellow board members to support innovative education and workforce development opportunities that drive growth and create lasting impact for the region,” McGown said.

The North Platte Water Department would like to remind its customers that when the outside temperature is below zero, as it is forecasted to be, to leave their water running to prevent the water service and interior plumbing from freezing up.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; Just a 1/8th inch stream of water running will prevent the main water service from freezing.&nbsp; This will save costly repair bills and the inconvenience of being without water.&nbsp; We have a device available at our office you can install in your toilet tank that will keep the water running constantly.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Please check your foundation vents to ensure they are closed.&nbsp; Check for cracks or openings that would allow the wind to blow under or into your crawlspace.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte Water Department releases Freezing Weather PSA

North Platte Community College will host a blood drive Jan.23. The event is open to the public.

The American Red Cross will be set up from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the concession area of the McDonald-Belton Building on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.

Save time by making an appointment using the American Red Cross Blood Donor App or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

A blood donor card, driver’s license or two other forms of identification will be required at check-in. Walk-ins are welcome.
