Grant, Neb. - Perkins County junior Myles Bishop is spending the week in Washington D.C. and is representing Midwest Electric at the Nebraska Rural Electric Assocation (NREA) Youth Tour.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Nebraska Rural Electric Washington Youth Tour is a weeklong trip to Washington D.C. and is open to high school students who participate in Youth Energy Camp. More than 1,800 students from 41 states participated in this event. High school students who attend energy camp have the opportunity to become a state ambassador.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The NREA announced on June 19th that Bishop was selected as its&nbsp;Youth Leadership Council representative and will represent Nebraska at the 2025 NRECA PowerXchange in Atlanta, Georgia.&nbsp;

The PowerXchange tour is the largest gathering of electric cooperative leaders and lets these leaders get together and talk about the challenges of the industry changing. The 2025 event will take place March 7th - 12th.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bishop will be entering his junior year at Perkins County and last year was a member of the Plainsmen football and basketball teams. He plays wide receiver in football and shooting guard on the basketball court.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The discharging of permissible fireworks during the following periods:

1. Beginning at 8:00 a.m. on June 25 and ending July 5 at 1:00 a.m. of each year. Permissible fireworks can be discharged only during said period of time between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. on June 25 through and including July 3, and between the hours of 8:00 a.m. on July 4 to 1:00 a.m. on July 5.

2. Beginning at 5:00 p.m. on December 31 and ending January 1 at 1:00 a.m., said eight-hour period allowed each year.

3. Other times as may be designated upon obtaining a special permit to do so, which permit may be issued if approved by the City Manager upon application.&nbsp; &nbsp;

A heat advisory is in effect today for much of the listening area. According to the National Weather Service, North Platte office, North Platte, Imperial, Curtis, and McCook are just a few towns in the area that are effected by the heat advisory.

Maximum Heats Indices for the area include North Platte 100 degrees, Imperial 101 degrees, Curtis 104 degrees, and McCook 105 degrees. A handful of coverage area not in the heat advisory can still reach high 90's throughout the day, check out the graphic below.

Hot temperatures mixed with humidity can be cause for potentially dangerous heat illnesses to occur. Stay hydrated during this time and&nbsp; stay in a cool area. Also wear sunscreen when outside in the heat. Never leave pets or people in a vehicle during this time of extreme heat.

North Platte, Neb. - Another year of NEBRASKAland Days has come to an end. This past weekend, crowds welcomed Parker McCollum and Jelly Roll to the Wild West Arena. An announcement was made in front of a packed crowd on Saturday that Luke Bryan will perform at next year's festival.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bryan is a well-known name in the country music industry and has won numerous awards during his career including the 2021 Entertainer of the Year at the ACM Awards. Bryan is currently on tour and has a scheduled stop in Omaha on July 26th.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ticket information for the Luke Bryan show will come out later this month. The second concert for the Viaero Wireless Summer Series is still TBD.&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: June 23rd, 2024

North Platte, Ne - Around 3am Saturday a small cluster of storms rolled through Lincoln County, however they packed a punch with winds that uprooted trees and even took the roof off an outbuilding at Mead Lumber at the corner of 6th and Eastman.&nbsp;

Dillon and Crystal Johnson live across the the street to the south and said "the wind hit around 3am, we heard a loud bang (sound) and the electricity went off." The Johnson's said city workers were quick to the scene and began to clear the street and work on getting electricty restored which they did about 50 minutes later. When the roof blew off it caught the power line as it sailed across the street.&nbsp;

Brandon Jones,&nbsp;Vice President of Construction Operations at Beveridge Incorporated was on the scene Saturday morning and said they were bringing in an excavator to help get the roof out of the tree.&nbsp;

There was damage all over North Platte including the airport where Trego Dugan had hanger doors damaged.&nbsp;

The National Weather Service was out surveying damage Saturday morning but hasn't released a statement in regards to what may have played a part in the wind damage. The Weather Service is calling for partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 87 today. North northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

The Lexington Police Department have identified the 39-year-old as Genaro Martinez-Martinez. Officials say they have worked with Homeland Security but have been unsuccessful in locating any family.&nbsp;

Lexington, Neb. - The Lexington Police Department suspects no foul play in the death of a man who was found lying in an alley last week.&nbsp;

On Thursday, June 13th at 6:15 pm, officers along with Lexington Fire and Rescue were dispatched to an alley downtown to a call of a male subject laying down. When first responders arrived on scene and evaluated the situation, it was determined the suspect was deceased.&nbsp;

According to the Lexington Police Department, investigation has revealed that the male subject was a 39-year-old not from the United States and was homeless. He had been in the Lexington area for one - two months. The male has been identified by officials but are withholding his identity pending family notification as they are still searching for any family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Evidence at the scene and an autopsy finding showed the male suffered rear head injuries, presumably from a backwards fall according to officials. No foul play is suspected. The investigation is still on-going.&nbsp;

CHAPPELL, Neb. — The spirit of the Pony Express lives on as modern-day riders, known as the Pony Express Re-Riders, embarked on their annual journey from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. Covering nearly 2000 miles, these dedicated riders are racing against time, aiming to complete the historic route in just 10 days.

Equipped with a GPS device known as a SPOT tracker, securely nestled in the mochila, each rider carries the responsibility of ensuring the timely delivery of the mail. The SPOT tracker sends a signal, or "ping," to a satellite every five minutes, allowing enthusiasts and supporters to monitor their progress in real-time on a larger National Park Service map.

Today, the Pony Express Re-Riders passed through Chappell, a small town bustling with excitement at the sight of these modern-day couriers. Locals and visitors alike gathered at the junction of Hwy 30 and Hwy 385 to witness this historical reenactment firsthand.

"I caught them at the junction and it was an amazing sight," remarked one spectator. "To see them riding through, carrying on this tradition, it's truly inspiring."

From Chappell, the riders continue their journey, making their way towards Bridgeport and onward to Guernsey, Wyoming.&nbsp; Each stage of the ride echoes the resilience and determination that characterized the original Pony Express riders over a century ago.

The annual Pony Express Re-Ride not only honors the legacy of the original Pony Express, which operated from 1860 to 1861, but also serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of adventure and the importance of communication in shaping the American West.

As the riders press forward, their progress can be tracked on the NPS map, where the Pony Rider Icon moves steadily westward, marking each mile of this remarkable journey across the heart of America.

The Hot Sheets: June 19th, 2024

OGALLALA, Neb. — The transfer of a racing license from Adams County to Keith County faces a delay of at least one month.

Hastings Exposition and Racing presented their proposal to the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission last Tuesday, aiming to relocate their license to Ogallala and collaborate with Elite Casinos to establish Lake Mac Casino, the Casino would also have a quarter horse race track.

However, the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission determined that Hastings Exposition and Racing lacked essential documentation necessary for approval.

One outstanding requirement is evidence of construction feasibility west of the Wal-Mart near the interstate.

Additionally, the commission stipulated that the race track must be constructed and inspected by Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commision officials before any license transfer can be considered.

Hastings Exposition and Racing has until June 28th now to furnish the required information. The commission plans to revisit the matter during its meeting on July 19th.

In a 5-2 vote, commissioners opted to postpone further deliberation until the upcoming session. Should the license transfer be authorized, HER anticipates hosting its inaugural race on Labor Day in 2025.

The Nebraska Legislature has already directed the Nebraska State Racing and Gaming Commission to conduct economic and social impact studies to determine eligible sites for new racetracks, which must be completed no later than January 1, 2025. The Ogallala City Council and Keith County Board of Commissioners provided exclusive support for this project.

 Should the Nebraska State Racing and Gaming Commission elect to award an additional racetrack to Ogallala, the facility would include:

Jack Dunlap &amp; Robert Mabe have been touring the country together since 2019. Collectively, they have performed and recorded with the likes of Larry Keel, Gina Furtado, Bud’s Collective, The Fly Birds, Dry Mill Road, Old Town Flood, Lonesome Highway, and Circa Blue, to name a few. They have also graced prestigious stages such as The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Carnegie Hall in New York City, Lied Center for Performing Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska, The Hamilton in Washington, DC, and Forbes Center for the Performing Arts in Harrisonburg, Va.
