North Platte, Ne - The blizzard conditions have closed roads further to the west as of the 3pm CST hour on Tuesday. Interstate 80 is closed from North Platte to Sidney both ways, and Interstate 76 closed around 2:30pm MST from Big Springs to Sterling, Colorado.

LINCOLN — Efforts to bolster the arts, recreation and food in McCook have garnered national recognition for the southwest Nebraska community.

Food &amp; Leisure magazine, in its annual&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.travelandleisure.com/americas-best-small-towns-2023-7643148">“best small towns” feature</a>, named McCook runner-up as the best small town for food and culture, right behind Los Olivos, California.

The magazine cited McCook, population 7,356, for its landmark Sehnert’s Bakery, the first James Beard Award-winning eatery in the state, the “striking” 6th Floor Project art gallery atop the town’s tallest building, and its 26-year-old Buffalo Commons Storytelling and Music Festival.

The art gallery is the work of Chad Graff and Joanne Falkenburg, who moved back to Nebraska in 2021 after successful careers in California.

They opened the 6th Floor Project, a contemporary art gallery, on the top level of the century-old Keystone building. In October, they opened another gallery, the ArtBank, in a former Wells Fargo Bank.

The Nebraska Department of Economic Development, in a press release, cited several other developments underway in the community.

Charlie McPherson of the McCook Economic Development Corporation told the DED that the community has focused on “quality of life” projects that help convince people to stay or move to McCook.

“We have a safe community, good school systems and projects underway in education, housing, arts, and music. There’s a lot to be excited about, a lot of momentum,” McPherson said.

Governor Pillen Releases Christmas & New Year’s Message

Thirty-one nominations were received this season for the Beauty of the Holidays lighting competition, organized by Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful and the&nbsp;North Platte Bulletin.

There is no shortage of Christmas spirit this year, with heartwarming displays in yards and homes all around the city.

“We love this time of year. Getting out and seeing all of the effort people put into spreading joy, gives us all the Christmas spirit,” KNPLCB Executive Director Mona Anderson said.

Bulletin&nbsp;Publisher George Lauby thanks everyone who puts up Christmas lights and goes to the extra effort to make the holidays extra beautiful.

“It gives us a lot of cheer,” he said.

This year’s prizes are generously sponsored by Brothers Tavern, Menard’s, Schaben Sanitation, and Cody Keno.&nbsp;

Fifteen community judges traveled more than 25 miles in North Platte and beyond to rank each nominated display on curb appeal, balance, theme, and maintenance.

Some of the judge’s comments include: “Stunning and gorgeous,” “Loved the Santa in the window.”&nbsp; “It was so cool, we had to get out of the car to walk through it.”&nbsp;

Gateway Realtys Michelle Cummings and Jodi Lynn Hinds presented Prairie Arts Centers Holly Carlini, Shelly Walchesky and Tara Conell Lienemann with a $4,400 check from their online auction for the 2023 Festival of Trees Fundraiser.&nbsp; 

This annual event not only raises money for PAC, it brings in hundreds of visitors from all over to view the decorations and trees.&nbsp;&nbsp; This has become a fun family Tradition for many and it’s all due to the many businesses, community members and groups who donate the beautiful items!&nbsp; 

This year PAC’s decorations expanded to all four floors for the statewide Nebraska Passport Program.&nbsp; Floors will be decorated through January 9th.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Angela Hipp and Ted Pucylowski with the Community Connections Mentoring Program are delivering this fun HotWheels tree purchased by Santa at PAC’s Festival of trees annual  Fundraiser.  The tree will go to a family of four kids recently placed in Foster care this holiday season.  The kids are connected with the Community Connections mentoring program. 

  Holly Carlini, Executive Director of PAC says, “The trees, wreaths and decor are created by local businesses and organizations every year for Festival of trees Fundraiser.   The annual holiday tradition brings in thousands of dollars and visitors to the Prairie Arts Center.  We are so grateful for the community support, creativity and family traditions created here&nbsp;during the holidays.”

  The Hot Wheels tree was created and donated by Jessica Lawrence, Jill Granger, Brenda McClellan, Liz Bennett, Gretchen Swift and Jennifer Kramer.  Michael Maupin of Kansas visits PAC as Santa and is a huge supporter of the community and the arts!

NORTH PLATTE - Al's Lock and Safe partnered with Eagle Radio delivered Christmas gifts to the residents at&nbsp;The Maple at Centennial to celebrate the upcoming holiday.&nbsp;

Over 100 gifts were donated from the community. Residents may not have the opportunity to receive a gift for various reason, but with the community stepping up, residents will have a gift to cherish and to have a wonderful Christmas. The gifts were delivered just in time for the residents Christmas party.

Dec. 21, 2023 (Lincoln, Neb.)&nbsp;— The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is excited to announce winners of its third annual “Name A Snowplow” contest. This contest strives to bring awareness about winter weather preparedness and safety to Nebraska’s elementary school students.

This year, NDOT received over 1,100 submissions from across the state, a new record for the contest. NDOT’s district teammates visited the winning schools across the state to congratulate the winning students in person. All students were able to see the newly named snowplows and ask NDOT snowfighters questions about plows and snow removal.

“Getting the opportunity to engage with kids – Nebraska’s next generation of drivers – is a chance for us to bring safety directly to the schools. It was also a great learning moment to share information about all the hard work that goes into keeping our roads safe in winter driving conditions,” stated NDOT Director Vicki Kramer.

NDOT uses its fleet of more than 600 snowplows to keep drivers safe in winter weather, which are ready to go, complete with full liquid tanks and more than 200,000 tons of salt to clear Nebraska’s roads.
