Susi Bolt, of McCook, has been selected to receive the 2025 Faculty Member of the Year Award from Mid-Plains Community College.

Bolt was nominated by MPCC cabinet members based on her long-standing commitment to helping students succeed in the classroom, her ongoing support of athletics and her dedication to the McCook campus. &nbsp;She was recognized Sunday during the Nebraska Community College Association’s annual meeting in Lincoln.

After more than three decades of shaping minds and boosting student confidence, Susi Bolt’s story embodies the very spirit of the college.

Bolt’s journey at Mid-Plains began in 1991, when she was hired part-time by Judi Haney to work in what was then called the Individualized Learning Center (ILC) in McCook.

Three years later she became a faculty member, teaching mathematics while running the Student Success Center. Eventually, she transitioned to full-time teaching — her favorite role of all.

“I’ve always loved teaching,” Bolt says. “The other jobs were just part of what I was hired to do, but teaching has always been my passion.”

Bolt didn’t start out planning to teach. Growing up in Culbertson, she enrolled at McCook Community College on a basketball scholarship and initially intended to go into accounting.

That changed thanks to the influence of her own math instructor at MCC, Stan Garretson. “He truly cared about every one of his students,” she says. “He was passionate about teaching, and that inspired me to go into math education.”

Bolt went on to complete her degree at Kearney State (now UNK) and taught math for grades 7–12 at Maywood High School for four years, also coaching volleyball and basketball. By the time she joined MPCC full-time, she was raising a young family and ready to put down roots closer to home.

“My favorite part of teaching is connecting with students and building their confidence in math,” she explains. “A lot of students struggle because they don’t think they can do it. But if you can make them believe they can, they usually will.”

For Bolt, the most rewarding experiences are often the smallest. “When you hand back an assignment or test and see the look on a student’s face — the smile, the relief — that’s what I live for,” she says.

That dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Known for attending athletic events and finding ways to connect with students beyond the classroom, Bolt says she learned early on how much those personal touches matter.

“If you have a high percentage of student-athletes, you have to connect with them through what they do and what they like,” she says.

Now in her 34th year at MPCC, Bolt reflects on her time with gratitude.

“Since I started here as a student myself, then worked part-time and eventually became faculty, I’ve seen every level of how a small college comes together to help students succeed,” she says. “When I was a student, so many people helped me, and I’ve always wanted to have that same impact on others.”

Outside of work, Bolt enjoys spending time with her three children and seven grandchildren, all of whom live nearby. She calls herself “lucky” to see them regularly — a blessing she knows not everyone has.

Though she’s humbled by the Faculty Member of the Year honor, Bolt sees it as a reflection of the college as a whole.

“I don’t feel like I’m more deserving than anyone else,” she says. “I’ve just been blessed to be part of this institution for so many years, surrounded by great people.”

MPCC Honors Susi Bolt as 2025 Faculty Member of the Year

Scottsbluff, Neb. _ The annual AgSplosion Field Day welcomed 190 second graders on Tuesday, October 14, to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln at the Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center in Scottsbluff. The 4-H Ag Literacy event rotated the students through eight stations to learn more about agriculture in their surrounding communities.&nbsp;

“We teach second graders about agriculture, specifically within the Panhandle,” said Audra Brown, Nebraska 4-H Extension Assistant. “The students learn about agricultural commodities within the Panhandle, from beans to corn, and beef to dairy cattle. They are exposed to what is being produced in agriculture right here in their backyard.”

The event was held in early October across the Nebraska Panhandle. Elementary schools from Bridgeport, Chadron, Chappell, Hemingford, Mitchell, Minatare, Morrill, and Scottsbluff participated in field days in their areas. A 4-H team was created from extension assistants in the surrounding counties. They created a schedule, contacted schools, and then came together to help staff the stations at each field day to ensure a successful event.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The stations included: beef, dairy, dry beans, potatoes, wheat, and their many products; corn, and the Nebraska Corn Board; and ag technology used by producers. The swine session, which explained commercial swine operations, was led by Brown.&nbsp;

“They really enjoy looking at the model swine barn - the comment I hear the most is ‘wow that's a lot of pigs in there!’ Having a physical model helps them to better understand what a farm looks like,” she said. The students were surprised to learn that pig heart valves can be used to replace damaged or diseased heart valves in humans, which function in much the same way. The students also learned about by-products that come from swine, such as chewing gum, crayons, and drumheads.

Sponsors this year included: Corn Board Grant, Morrill County Farm Bureau, Nebraska Dry Bean &amp; Lentil Commission, Oshkosh Heifer Development (donating dairy station supplies), Scotts Bluff County Farm Bureau, and Walthers Farms (donating the potato chips).

Second graders engage with agriculture at annual AgSplosion Field Day

Rascal Martinez, of Sutherland, has been selected to receive the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award from Mid-Plains Community College.

Martinez was nominated by MPCC cabinet members based on his rising success as a professional musician and his deep connection to his alma mater and the community that helped shape his journey. He was recognized last night during the Nebraska Community College Association’s annual meeting in Lincoln.

Though it’s been ten years since Rascal Martinez walked the halls of MPCC, he still remembers his time fondly.

“Sometimes it feels like it was just yesterday,” he says. “I was at the college practically every evening doing plays, audio work and more. That’s where I built some lifelong friendships.”

Martinez chose MPCC for its strong reputation and proximity to home. “My dad, aunts, uncles — a lot of my family went through Mid-Plains, so I knew it was a great place to start,” he recalls. “It was affordable, close and I’d always heard good things.”

Martinez balanced student life and sharing music with others during his time as a student. “I was already DJing proms and doing karaoke nights at Applebee’s while I was in school,” he says.

He credits his business, economics, theater and music instructors for helping him build the foundation for a sustainable career.

“Mrs. Nutt, Mrs. Chittick, Mrs. McCune, Sally Thalken, Mrs. Peters, Mr. Galvan and so many others really gave me the tools I needed to grow. I took a lot from all of them. I had so many great instructors and experiences that really shaped who I am today.”

Rascal is now a full-time musician with a nationwide following and a new album set to be released in the coming months. But despite the whirlwind of tour stops, recording sessions and late-night shows, he remains deeply grateful for the place where it all began.

“I always tell students — start at Mid-Plains,” he says. “You’ll save money, stay close to home and get a great education. MPCC had such a big impact on me.”

When he’s not on stage, Martinez enjoys traveling to comedy shows with his wife.&nbsp; He also loves spending time as a family with their young son.

Being selected as the MPCC Alumnus of the Year is an honor he doesn’t take lightly. “I was so excited when I found out,” he says. “MPCC has continued to support me even after graduation — inviting me to perform at events and keeping me connected. It really means a lot.”

LINCOLN — A Nebraska-run immigration detention facility in McCook will begin accepting the first federal migrant detainees at the state prison facility “in the next day or two,” Gov. Jim Pillen said Monday.

Pillen, speaking at an unrelated news conference, said the repurposing of Nebraska’s former Work Ethic Camp would include moving in the first federal migrant detainees this week.&nbsp;

Pillen had previously said he estimated the first detainees would come by Oct. 31 but had backed that up last week to early November. He and other state and federal officials have dubbed the revamped facility the “Cornhusker Clink.”

Nebraska has agreed to transition the former all-male state prison, which had offered rehabilitative programming and allowed inmates to work in the neighboring community, under an&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2025/10/17/nebraska-signed-contract-with-ice-on-sept-30-to-turn-state-prison-into-migrant-detention-center/">initial two-year contract</a>&nbsp;with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The contract was&nbsp;<a href="https://corrections.nebraska.gov/sites/default/files/Contract-NDCS-Department-of-Homeland-Security-ICE.pdf" target="_blank">signed Sept. 30</a>.

The facility will remain state-owned and operated.

Under the contract, the Nebraska-ICE facility will eventually house up to 300 detainees. That would be more than the current maximum of about 200. Pillen said he expects the project — which he described as in two “phases” — to fill up to 200 detainees within “two to three weeks.”

Nebraska plans to find more room to support immigration court hearings at the facility and bedding for up to 300 adult male and female detainees, such as by repurposing previous programming space.&nbsp;

Pillen said the state is in the “midst” of getting the cost of that second phase approved, “and that’ll get started in the next couple of weeks.”

“Don’t have an exact timeline to that,” Pillen said Monday of the expansion. “My guess … it would be by the end of the year.”

Pillen’s office has estimated the contract would annually net Nebraska about $14.25 million. The Work Ethic Camp had an annual operating cost of $10.2 million. ICE has also agreed to also pay Nebraska a one-time lump sum of $5.9 million for “facility renovations.”&nbsp;

Nebraska to house first ICE detainees at McCook state prison over ‘next day or two,’ governor says

SUTHERLAND, Neb. — A woman escaped with minor injuries after a single-vehicle rollover accident south of Sutherland Saturday evening.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the crash around 6:55 p.m. on November 1st along West Power Road.

While first responders were on the way, the lone female occupant was able to exit the vehicle on her own before it became fully engulfed in flames.

Hershey Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene and worked quickly to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading further.

The driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Authorities say speed is believed to be a factor in the cause of the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Driver Escapes Rollover Crash South of Sutherland Before Vehicle Catches Fire

Ogallala, Neb. - As temperatures drop, local water officials are reminding residents to take steps now to protect their homes from the costly damage caused by frozen water pipes. A few simple precautions can help prevent frozen or burst lines and save homeowners time, money, and stress this winter.

Here are some important winterization tips:

Local hardware and building supply stores carry a variety of pipe insulation materials, and plumbing companies can offer advice or assistance with winterization needs.

Know Your Shutoff Valve:
In case a pipe does freeze or burst, knowing where the main water shutoff valve is located can minimize interior damage. Every service line should have a valve both before and after the water meter—make sure everyone in your household knows where they are and how to use them. If the valves don’t work properly, contact a licensed plumber for repairs.

</li><li>Check for Leaks:
If you notice icicles forming on an outdoor faucet, it may indicate a leak. Leaks should be repaired promptly to prevent freezing, pipe breakage, and further damage.
</li><li>Insulate Water Meters:
Water meters located in pits should be insulated and the pit packed with batted fiberglass insulation to help maintain warmth.
</li><li>Protect Mobile and Modular Homes:
Homes with exposed water meters or service lines below the floor should be wrapped with heat tape and insulation to prevent freezing.
</li><li>Drain Sprinkler Systems:
Automatic lawn sprinkler systems should be drained and, if necessary, blown out to avoid freezing and damage to pipes and valves.

PAXTON, Neb. — What started as a small student idea has blossomed into one of Paxton’s most hands-on community agricultural projects. Paxton High School junior Landon Drews is preparing to host the second annual Harvest Day, part of his student-led Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project through FFA.

Landon first began the project as a freshman, taking on the challenge of managing a test plot on local farmland — a bold move that’s since grown into a full-scale, community-supported event.

“When we started, I was just supposed to farm the ground,” Drews explained. “Then my brother mentioned doing a test plot, and from there I knew I wanted to make it big.”

Last year’s plot featured six seed dealers and multiple corn varieties. This year, Landon expanded the project to include no-till and strip-till test plots with seven seed dealers — each providing a single variety for comparison. The project, he said, gives seed companies valuable data while helping him learn the science and strategy behind crop production.

“It’s a dryland test plot, which is pretty rare,” Drews said. “Most are irrigated, but I wanted to see how these varieties perform under real dryland conditions. It’s been awesome to watch it all come together.”

Support from area businesses like Hi-Line Co-op and Clauss Equipment in Ogallala has made the project possible, assisting with spraying and harvesting. Drews said he’s grateful for their continued backing — and for the enthusiasm from the community.

The highlight of the year is Harvest Day, happening Tuesday, November 4, starting with elementary student visits around 9 a.m., followed by a community hamburger feed from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (MT).

This year’s event will include hands-on learning stations featuring farm equipment, seed corn, and ag technology from 21st Century Equipment, Akrs Equipment, Fendt, and more. Students will have a chance to see and touch machinery they might not encounter otherwise.

“I wanted to get kids involved and show them what agriculture looks like up close,” Drews said. “It’s amazing how many kids from rural schools haven’t had that opportunity. Maybe it sparks something in them to go into farming or ag careers.”

Landon’s leadership has already made an impact — younger students recognize him in the halls and ask how “their” test plot is doing.

“It shows me I might be a role model for them,” he said. “This project has really helped me grow as a leader.”

Looking ahead, Drews said he and his seed partners are already brainstorming what next year’s plot might hold — possibly dryland soybeans. He’s also applying for a proficiency degree, a prestigious FFA recognition awarded to top student projects across Nebraska.

For now, his focus is on celebrating this year’s success. “I invite everyone out to Harvest Day,” Drews said. “Come see what we’ve built, enjoy a hamburger, and learn a little bit about agriculture.”

The day’s itinerary included a visit to Frenchman Valley Produce, a whole (baked) potato producer, followed by a tour of Frenchman Valley Cooperative, a regional leader in agronomy services, grain, energy, and feed.

Dr. Brad Ramsdale, Professor of Agronomy at NCTA, facilitated the educational tour connecting classroom learning to real-world agricultural systems and technology. “Seeing how crops move from the field to the market and understanding the complex logistics in between is one of the best ways to prepare our students for Nebraska’s workforce,” Ramsdale said. “Tours like this help bridge that connection between what they learn on campus and what employers need in the industry.”

At Frenchman Valley Produce, students followed the post-harvest process from potato storage and sorting to packaging and shipping. The company specializes in high-quality whole potatoes destined for the baking and restaurant market. The group observed automated grading systems, handling technology, and food safety measures, gaining perspective on how agricultural science supports both efficiency and product quality.

In nearby Grant, students toured Frenchman Valley Cooperative’s agronomy and fertilizer facilities, where managers demonstrated blending and delivery systems, explained custom application processes, and discussed the cooperative’s role in supporting area producers through precision agriculture and input management. Students also walked test plots to observe early-season wheat and cover crop establishment, linking field observations with coursework in crop science and soil fertility.

Connecting Students with Nebraska’s Ag Industry

NCTA’s agronomy program emphasizes hands-on learning, small class sizes, and direct connections to employers across the state. The trip reinforced NCTA’s mission of preparing students for immediate entry into Nebraska’s agricultural workforce and providing opportunities to explore diverse career paths in crop consulting, precision ag, and production management.

2026 Sandhills Ranch Internship Program & the NEW Sandhills Ranch Apprenticeship

Ogallala, Neb - High school students in Ogallala are getting hands-on experience in the trades while making a real difference in the lives of local veterans, thanks to Mid Plains Community College’s Ready to Work Homes for Heroes program. This innovative course allows students to learn construction skills by building tiny homes for unhoused veterans, combining workforce training with community service.

Mary Pierce, working with Mid Plains Community College Ready to Work, explained that the program was created to meet a growing need for skilled workers in building construction, plumbing, electrical, and welding in Western Nebraska. “Not all high school students are going on to a two- or four-year college, but it’s important they leave school with marketable skills,” Pierce said.

The course is taught by Jake Soper, who guides students through all aspects of building, from rough framing and interior finishes to plumbing and electrical work. Students also learn job-ready skills such as writing resumes and interviewing, preparing them for entry-level construction positions in the community. The program starts in January and runs through March or April, with classes held all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. At the end of the program, students receive a certificate listing the skills they have mastered.

What sets Homes for Heroes apart from traditional trade classes is its altruistic component. Students are building homes for veterans in need, giving them a tangible way to impact their community. “One of the most important parts of this program is that students are doing something so much bigger than themselves,” Pierce said. “They’re building a home for a veteran, and that changes the whole meaning behind the work.”

The program is free for students, thanks to grant funding, making it accessible to a wide range of participants. Over the next several years, the goal is to build seven to eight tiny homes, creating permanent housing for unhoused veterans.

High School Students Build Skills and Homes for Veterans Through Unique Program

Lincoln, Neb. (Oct. 28, 2025)&nbsp;– The HALT Human Trafficking Fund has awarded its second round of grants to the&nbsp;<a>Dawson County Sheriff’s Office</a>, the Sandhills Crisis Intervention Program and the&nbsp;<a>Set Me Free Project</a>. These grants will support projects aimed at preventing human trafficking in Nebraska.

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office will implement technology enhancements to strengthen anti-trafficking efforts through increased law enforcement capabilities. The Dawson County Sheriff's Office serves a critical transportation corridor where thousands of people pass through on I-80 daily, making advanced technology essential for identifying and preventing human trafficking.

The Sandhills Crisis Intervention Program will host a trafficking survivor and forensic nurse to deliver educational presentations aimed at preventing human trafficking. The program will train students, teachers, parents, community members and law enforcement to identify red flags, grooming techniques and trafficking indicators. The Sandhills Crisis Intervention Program works to prevent and eliminate interpersonal and family violence in Arthur, Deuel, Garden, Grant, Keith and Perkins Counties.

The Set Me Free Project will develop the READY to Stand Empower Toolkit, a secure, trauma-informed digital platform that expands the organization's human trafficking prevention curriculum. The platform will deliver customized learning about healthy relationships, digital safety and emotional well-being through innovative technology and evidence-informed instructional design. The Set Me Free Project is dedicated to stopping human trafficking before it starts through prevention education for all ages.

"These grants will strengthen critical efforts to prevent human trafficking across our state," said Richard Baier, president and CEO of the Nebraska Bankers Association. "We're proud to support organizations that are protecting vulnerable Nebraskans in communities throughout our state."

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office serves a critical transportation corridor where thousands of people pass through on I-80 daily, making advanced technology essential for identifying and preventing human trafficking.<h2>Sandhills Crisis Intervention Program</h2>The Sandhills Crisis Intervention Program will host a trafficking survivor and forensic nurse to deliver educational presentations aimed at preventing human trafficking. The program will train students, teachers, parents, community members and law enforcement to identify red flags, grooming techniques and trafficking indicators. The Sandhills Crisis Intervention Program works to prevent and eliminate interpersonal and family violence in Arthur, Deuel, Garden, Grant, Keith and Perkins Counties.<h2>Set Me Free Project</h2>The Set Me Free Project will develop the READY to Stand Empower Toolkit, a secure, trauma-informed digital platform that expands the organization's human trafficking prevention curriculum. The platform will deliver customized learning about healthy relationships, digital safety and emotional well-being through innovative technology and evidence-informed instructional design. The Set Me Free Project is dedicated to stopping human trafficking before it starts through prevention education for all ages."These grants will strengthen critical efforts to prevent human trafficking across our state," said Richard Baier, president and CEO of the Nebraska Bankers Association. HALT Human Trafficking Fund Awards Grants to Three Nebraska Organizations

McCook, Neb. — The Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) has released its 2024–2025 Annual Report, showcasing a year of strong progress in disease prevention, emergency preparedness, environmental health, and community wellness across its nine-county service area.

Strengthening Emergency Preparedness and Disease Response

SWNPHD updated its Emergency Response Plan and contributed to the statewide Integrated Preparedness Plan, ensuring better coordination in future crises. The department also refined distribution plans for the Strategic National Stockpile to efficiently deliver medical supplies during emergencies.

This year, the team responded to a tuberculosis (TB) case in the region—working with local partners to contain the disease and treat six individuals exposed. In total, SWNPHD logged 1,299 disease reports and completed 469 follow-up investigations during the year.

Air quality monitoring expanded significantly with PurpleAir sensors now installed in all nine counties, giving residents real-time access to local air conditions.

The department also tested 144 private wells for nitrates. Roughly one-third exceeded the safe limit of 10 mg/L, underscoring the ongoing need for water safety awareness.

Meanwhile, 60 radon test kits were distributed and 227 students from eight schools participated in the annual Radon Poster Contest, helping spread awareness of the cancer-causing gas.

Childhood lead screening saw a notable rise—247 children tested this year, up from 187 last year. The department also investigated 10 elevated lead cases and added LeadCare II machines at its McCook and Ogallala offices to expand screening access.

SWNPHD continued its Polish Your Pearls dental program, offering free oral screenings and fluoride treatments to children in schools and daycares. Portable dental equipment also brought care to nine long-term care facilities.

More than 400 fourth-graders took part in the annual Nebraska Kids Fitness &amp; Nutrition Day, combining hands-on lessons in nutrition and exercise.

The Walk to Health challenge attracted 129 participants this year, using the new Be Well app to track progress and encourage daily activity.

SWNPHD’s Pool Cool program partnered with 12 swimming pools to teach sun safety and awarded each participating pool $250 for helping prevent skin cancer in their communities.

A partnership with CredibleMind expanded access to online mental health resources, offering over 38,000 residents free 24/7 support tools. Nearly 900 users accessed the platform during its first months.

The Lifespan Respite Network continues to support caregivers, enrolling nine families and hosting events—like a painting session in Trenton—to provide meaningful breaks and connection.

Reducing Tobacco Use and Improving Road Safety

Efforts to reduce tobacco and nicotine use remain a top priority, with community outreach focused on youth and underserved populations.

SWNPHD also earned a Nebraska Department of Transportation mini-grant, which funded local campaigns promoting seatbelt use and discouraging impaired or distracted driving.

Minority Health Initiative and Immunizations

Through the Minority Health Initiative, the department hosted free screenings across multiple counties—offering cholesterol checks, flu vaccines, and nutrition classes.

In total, SWNPHD provided 1,144 immunizations to 671 people, including routine shots, school clinics, and travel vaccines.

The department reported $1.78 million in total revenue and $1.61 million in expenses for the 2024–2025 fiscal year, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and responsible resource use.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to get their flu shots and COVID-19 shot updates to protect against respiratory illnesses this winter. SWNPHD has seen an increase of COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks, following the late summer wave of infections seen across most of the country. Last year SWNPHD gave over 400 flu shots and 125 COVID shots, with pharmacies and clinics giving many more as well.

Influenza (flu) is a potentially fatal, contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. Flu vaccines make it less likely that you will get the flu; if you do get the flu, it keeps your symptoms from becoming serious, lowering the risk of needing medical care or hospitalization.

Everyone ages 6 months and older are recommended to get the updated flu vaccines. Flu shots are available at local clinics, at pharmacies, community shot clinics, and at SWNPHD offices in McCook and Ogallala.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most people infected with this virus experience mild illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some people become seriously ill and need medical attention. The COVID vaccines reduce the risk of developing severe complications, hospitalization, long COVID symptoms, or death.

Recommendations for COVID vaccinations have changed since last season:

· This year anyone aged 65 and over is eligible for a COVID vaccine. Those 6 months of age to 64 years of age may get it based on individual decision making, also known as shared clinical decision making. This means you should speak to a healthcare provider such as a doctor, nurse, or pharmacist prior to vaccination.

· The CDC still recommends vaccination especially for populations at higher risk of severe COVID-19, including adults aged 65 and older, persons with underlying medical conditions, pregnant people, residents of long-term-care facilities, and the immunocompromised.

· Those at high risk for severe complications from COVID-19 such as someone who is immune compromised, has a medical condition, those who live with someone who as at high risk for COVID-19 complications, or those who have a high-risk job like working at a nursing home or hospital, are also recommended for COVID vaccine.

According to the CDC, it is safe and acceptable to receive COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine during the same appointment. These are separate shots and are not combined into one shot. Check with your healthcare provider if you have questions about getting multiple vaccinations at one time.

SWNPHD: Time for Flu Shots and COVID-19 Shots

OGALLALA, NEB - As Nebraska’s upland hunting season begins, a local conservation partnership is opening more land for public access while boosting the rural economy across western Nebraska.

Addie Piernicky, Coordinating Wildlife Biologist with&nbsp;Pheasants Forever, joined&nbsp;Sandhill Spotlight&nbsp;this week to discuss the&nbsp;Nebraska Community Access Partnership (NCAP)&nbsp;— a collaboration between Pheasants Forever, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, OnX, and the Keith County Chamber of Commerce.

“This program provides a one-time bonus for individuals who enroll land for public hunting access on top of their regular Open Fields and Waters payments,” Piernicky said. “It’s been really exciting — we’ve been able to spend nearly $900,000 on public access in just 18 months.”

The funding, made possible through an&nbsp;$800,000 Nebraska Environmental Trust grant, helps landowners earn additional income while providing hunters more opportunities. Participating landowners can receive&nbsp;$25 per acre for CRP ground&nbsp;and&nbsp;$10 per acre for rangeland&nbsp;as a one-time bonus, along with annual Open Fields and Waters payments that range depending on habitat quality.

For some property owners, Piernicky said, the payments can make a real difference.

“In some cases, it might even cover your property taxes,” she said. “If there’s a section of land you’re not using but has good habitat, it can be a great revenue source.”

Currently, the program is focused in&nbsp;Keith, Garden, Deuel, and Arthur Counties, with secondary areas including&nbsp;Lincoln, Morrill, Perkins, Kimball, and Cheyenne Counties. Piernicky said Pheasants Forever hopes to expand the program farther west after submitting a new grant application earlier this year.

So far in 2025, the group has enrolled&nbsp;57,000 acres&nbsp;in total, including&nbsp;14,000 acres added this year&nbsp;— about half of which are new to public access.

To address landowner concerns, Piernicky emphasized that participants are protected by the&nbsp;Nebraska Recreational Liability Act, which shields them from liability for injuries to hunters using the land.

“There’s no liability,” she said. “People are only allowed to walk. No driving, no camping, no target shooting — it’s all low-impact recreation.”

Hunters can find access areas in the&nbsp;Nebraska Public Access Atlas, available at gas stations, Walmart's, and online through the&nbsp;Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The digital atlas is updated more frequently than the print version and includes properties added throughout the year.

For a little extra fun this season, Pheasants Forever is once again hosting its&nbsp;Longest Tail Feather Competition, where hunters who harvest a rooster on public access can measure their bird’s tail feather at a participating business and submit entries online.

“Last year, the winning tail feather was 33¼ inches,” Piernicky said with a laugh. “It was wild — one of those rare, record-breaking birds.”

Entries can be submitted at&nbsp;NebraskaPF.com/Nebraska-Hunting, and prizes include a&nbsp;dog kennel and Sheels gift cards.

Piernicky encouraged both hunters and landowners to get involved in the spirit of conservation and community.

With Halloween just around the corner, Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is reminding families across the region to keep safety top of mind while enjoying the fun and festivities. Whether trick-or-treating, attending events, or handing out candy, a few simple precautions can help everyone have a safe and healthy holiday.

“Halloween should be a time of fun, not fear,” says Kay Schmidt, Emergency Response Coordinator, at SWNPHD. “By planning ahead and making safety a priority, parents and children can enjoy the excitement without unnecessary risks.”

To ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween, it’s important to prioritize visibility and awareness. Children should carry glow sticks or flashlights and wear costumes with reflective tape so drivers can easily see them. Stick to sidewalks and crosswalks and stay alert by keeping phones put away while walking.

Costume safety also plays a big role. Costumes should fit properly to prevent trips and falls, and flame-resistant materials are recommended. Whenever possible, choose non-toxic makeup over masks, as masks can limit a child’s vision and increase the risk of accidents.

When it comes to treats, safety starts before eating. All candy should be inspected for tampering or choking hazards, and children should avoid consuming homemade treats from strangers. Encourage a healthy start to the evening with a nutritious meal to help limit excessive snacking later. In the days that follow, balance candy with healthier snack options.

Weather conditions can change quickly in the fall, so check the forecast and dress children appropriately. Layering under costumes is a good way to stay warm without reducing visibility. Lastly, keep pets indoors and away from the front door during trick-or-treating hours to avoid stress or sudden reactions to visitors in costumes.

SWNPHD also encourages local organizations and communities to consider safe alternatives such as trunk-or-treat events, community center activities, or school-sponsored Halloween parties that are well-lit and supervised.
