North Platte, NE&nbsp;— Heather French Henry, recognized veterans advocate and Strategic Outreach Director for Global Game Changers Student Empowerment Program, will lead a series of community and leadership-focused events in North Platte, Nebraska, during Crowns for Gowns Weekend, February 6–8, 2026.

French Henry will serve as emcee of the Miss High Plains Scholarship Competition on Friday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m. at the McDonald-Belton Theater, supporting young women competing for scholarships and a chance to compete for Miss Nebraska, an official state competition for Miss America.

On Saturday, February 7, French Henry will lead workshops designed specifically for participants in the Miss Nebraska Organization, focusing on leadership identity, communication, personal branding, and understanding the responsibility that comes with service-driven platforms. The sessions will also introduce elements of the Free Global Game Changers Elementary School Curriculum, which helps students recognize their individual strengths—or “superpowers”—and apply them toward positive community impact through their unique equation&nbsp;MY TALENT + MY HEART = MY SUPERPOWER!®&nbsp;

Later that day, French Henry will serve as keynote speaker at a Community Luncheon, open to the public, from 1:00–3:00 p.m. at North 40. Her remarks will center on service, leadership, and the idea that every woman possesses unique “superpowers” that can be used to build their own confidence and strengthen their communities.

“Service is one of the greatest superpowers we can cultivate,”&nbsp;said French Henry.&nbsp;“Whether I’m speaking to the public or mentoring young women within the Miss Nebraska Organization, the message is the same: leadership is not about a title, but about how you choose to show up for others. Nebraska has always embraced that spirit of service, and I’m honored to visit North Platte to share that message.”

French Henry has a long-standing connection to Nebraska, including previous collaborations with The Durham Museum, where she partnered on the beloved&nbsp;White Christmas Collection&nbsp;celebrating American cultural heritage. Wine Glass Ranch of Imperial, Nebraska, has been named the 2025 National Environmental Stewardship Award Program (ESAP) winner, receiving national recognition earlier this week during the Prime Cut Awards at CattleCon 2026.

The award is presented annually by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association to honor cattle producers who demonstrate exceptional environmental stewardship while maintaining productive and profitable beef operations.

Wine Glass Ranch was selected for its commitment to responsible land management, conservation practices, and long-term sustainability within the beef cattle industry. The operation was recognized alongside producers from across the country during the industry’s largest annual gathering.

CattleCon is hosted by NCBA and brings together cattle producers, industry leaders, policymakers, and allied organizations for education, policy discussions, and awards celebrating excellence in beef production. The Prime Cut Awards ceremony highlights individuals and operations making significant contributions to the industry.

The Environmental Stewardship Award Program was established in 1991 to showcase how cattle producers can be leaders in conservation. ESAP recipients are evaluated on a wide range of practices, including soil health, water conservation, wildlife habitat enhancement, and overall environmental responsibility, while still meeting the demands of modern beef production.

Imperial Ranch Earns National Environmental Stewardship Award at CattleCon

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is reporting a third case of Avian Influenza (bird flu) in a 7-month period within the nine-county health district. This case was identified in chickens in a backyard flock. According to Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), bird flu is a disease caused by certain influenza viruses that are commonly spread between birds, not people.

“People rarely get bird flu but can become infected by breathing in droplets in the air that contain the virus, or by touching infected bird mucous, saliva or feces and then touching their eyes, mouth or nose,” states Chloe Martin, Disease Surveillance Program Manager at SWNPHD. “When handling sick birds, protect your health by wearing gloves, masks, and eye coverings.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 71 probable or confirmed human cases of Avian Influenza in the United States since 2024, with two deaths reported.

“Precautions to keep your flock healthy closely mirror recommendations for other health issues,” states Myra Stoney, Health Director.&nbsp; “Prevention is one of those precautions.”

SWNPHD: Back Yard Poultry Tests Positive for Avian Influenza

Nebraska’s manufacturing sector began 2026 under continued pressure, according to the latest Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index.

For the fourth time in the past five months, the overall Mid-America index fell below growth neutral, signaling ongoing weakness across the region. Nebraska’s January Business Conditions Index improved slightly to 44.6 from 40.5 in December but remained well below the 50.0 level that indicates economic growth.

The index is based on a monthly survey of supply managers and uses the same methodology as the national Institute for Supply Management.

“Creighton’s latest survey indicates that the regional manufacturing economy continues to move sideways to lower,” said Ernie Goss, director of Creighton University’s Economic Forecasting Group. “Wholesale inflation has moderated, but employment remains weak.”

Nebraska manufacturers continued to lose jobs in January, marking the 10th consecutive month that the regional employment index remained below growth neutral. Nebraska’s employment component registered 48.7 for the month.

Long-term trends show deeper challenges. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the nine-state Mid-America region — which includes Nebraska — has lost more than 333,000 manufacturing jobs over the past 25 years, representing roughly 20 percent of its manufacturing workforce.

Trade conditions also remained strained. New export orders fell below growth neutral, and imports continued to decline as higher prices and trade restrictions limited overseas purchasing. According to the U.S. International Trade Administration, Nebraska manufacturing exports totaled $5.2 billion during the first 10 months of 2025, down from $5.8 billion during the same period in 2024 — an 11.9 percent decrease.

Tariffs continued to influence business decisions. About 31 percent of survey respondents said tariffs forced their firms to change suppliers, with some reporting a shift toward domestic purchasing.

Despite weak conditions, economic confidence improved. The Business Confidence Index climbed to its highest level in 12 months as wholesale inflation moderated and tariff policies stabilized.

Other Nebraska index components for January included new orders at 49.7, production at 47.2, delivery lead times at 45.5, and inventories at 31.7, indicating reduced stockpiling following earlier concerns over tariffs.

The Mid-America Business Conditions Index surveys manufacturers in nine states: Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. February survey results are scheduled for release on the first business day of March.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) has seen a large increase in reports of Influenza A and COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks. Respiratory illnesses like these affect your lungs and airways and share common symptoms like fever and cough. As cold weather continues and people spend less time outdoors, respiratory illnesses spread more easily.

“Wastewater is tested weekly at certain sites across the state, so we have the ability to monitor what viruses are affecting the residents of our area,” explains Melissa Propp, Clinic Manager for SWNPHD. Wastewater testing from the past two weeks has shown high levels of both Influenza A and COVID.

Wastewater is normally tested for RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), Influenza A and B, and COVID-19. Starting at the end of January, the wastewater will also be tested for the measles virus. “Being able to test for these viruses can help us predict illness in the area as well as giving us another tool to help monitor for possible outbreaks,” states Propp.

Since October 1st the district has seen over 100 hospitalizations from Influenza. The majority are from December to now. SWNPHD has received lab confirmation of 59 COVID cases in that time as well, with 30 cases reported in January so far. Many schools in the health district are reporting high absentee rates due to illness.

· Influenza and COVID vaccines are still available in the health district. Vaccination against both flu and COVID can help reduce the severity of symptoms and the amount of time you may be sick. This helps reduce lost time at work and school.

· Frequent handwashing is the number one way to help reduce the spread of illness. Washing your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water will help keep germs from being transferred from your hands to your eyes, nose or mouth. If no soap and water are available, use a 70% or higher alcohol-based hand sanitizer and be sure to rub it into the skin until it is dry.

· Cover your cough. Using the inside of your elbow or a tissue to cover up will help reduce the number of viruses that get into the air. Be sure to wash your hands if you use a tissue.

· Stay home if you are sick. If you are running a fever, you need to stay home for 24 hours after no longer needing fever controlling medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. You can still be contagious for up to 24 hours after your fever goes away.

If you or someone else has been sick and has any of the following issues, seek immediate medical attention. Trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure that is not going away, confusion, trouble waking up or staying awake, bluish lips or face, or an uncontrolled fever after taking fever reducing medication.

Central Nebraska community partners are coming together to host a free Ag Health and Safety Event, Cultivating Health, on Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Gothenburg.

The event will be held at the Dayspring Bank Event Center and is designed to take a broad look at the health, safety, and day-to-day challenges involved in agriculture and rural life.

Joe Richeson, one of the organizers, said the event goes beyond traditional safety training.

“This isn’t hard-hat safety or excavation safety,” Richeson said. “It’s more of a top-down approach to what it takes to run an ag operation, whether you’re a producer, farmer, rancher, or involved in ag in some other way.”

Sessions throughout the day will cover a wide range of topics, including mental health, distracted driving, water quality and quantity, nitrates in drinking water, occupational safety, and nutrition for long workdays in the field.

Presenters include the Nebraska Trucking Association, members of the governor’s groundwater task force, Nebraska Medicine, and an occupational therapist focusing on safe movement and body mechanics. A session on food preparation will also address how to safely prepare energy-rich meals for long days during planting, harvesting, or livestock work.

Richeson said the event is open to anyone, not just those directly involved in agriculture.

“You don’t have to be ag-related to attend,” he said. “Ag touches everyone’s life every day, whether you realize it or not.”

Spouses and family members are encouraged to attend, particularly for the mental health session, which focuses on coping with the stresses unique to the agricultural industry, including markets, employees, and daily uncertainty.

The event begins at 10:30 a.m. Exhibit booths will be set up by noon and remain open until 4 p.m., with sessions concluding at 4 p.m. A business-after-hours event will follow from 4 to 7 p.m.

Attendees may come and go throughout the day and are not required to stay for all sessions. A free lunch will be provided, and local FFA members will assist during the event.

Health screenings will also be available through Gothenburg Health, with options for multiple screenings, including full blood work for those who choose to fast.

NORTH PLATTE — The Miss Nebraska Organization will return to North Platte in early February for its annual Crowns and Gowns weekend, bringing pageant events, leadership workshops and a former Miss America to the community.

Crowns and Gowns is scheduled for Feb. 6–8 and serves as the final local competition opportunity for contestants before the Miss Nebraska state pageant in June. Events are centered around professional development for young women ages 14 to 27, as well as public activities open to the community.

This year’s weekend will feature Heather French Henry, Miss America 2000, who will serve as a keynote guest throughout the weekend. French Henry will emcee the local Miss Nebraska competition on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. at Mid-Plains Community College. Doors are expected to open at 6:30 p.m., with tickets available at the door.

She will also headline a Women’s Empowerment Luncheon on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. at North 40 Chophouse. Tickets for the luncheon are available online at MissNebraska.org.

Megan Doughty, executive director of the Miss Nebraska Organization, said Crowns and Gowns is designed to help young women grow far beyond the stage.

“The word ‘pageant’ is really a misnomer anymore,” Doughty said. “It’s about developing personal passions, advocacy and life skills that carry through long after competition.”

Throughout the weekend, delegates will participate in workshops focused on interview skills, public speaking, branding, advocacy development and community engagement. Professional hair and makeup services, headshot photography and private gown appointments will also be offered.

The local competition includes personal interviews with judges, on-stage questions, fitness wear, evening gown and talent segments. Scholarships are awarded based on placement and special awards.

According to Doughty, the Miss Nebraska Organization awards more than $40,000 annually in cash scholarships, along with access to more than $1 million in tuition scholarships through partnerships with Nebraska colleges and universities.

The current titleholders include Miss Nebraska’s Teen Gabriella Swift of North Platte and Miss Nebraska 2025 Mackenzie Gregory of Scottsbluff.

Doughty said community support has helped make North Platte a key location for pageant events statewide.

“We’re bringing young women from across Nebraska to experience our community,” she said. “It’s about showcasing North Platte while helping these delegates realize their potential.”

Ogallala, Neb. - The Ogallala YMCA is building momentum heading into February with new members, upcoming fitness challenges, expanded class offerings, and plans to introduce indoor pickleball.

Melissa Ewert, branch executive director of the Ogallala YMCA, said last week’s “Try the Y Day” event was a success despite extremely cold weather.

“We did about 15 to 20 memberships and I would say half of those were new members and half were renewals that day,” Ewert said.

While evening class attendance was lighter than expected due to the cold, Ewert said the event still achieved its main goal: introducing new people to the facility.

“There were so many new faces that I had never seen, and that was the plan for this — to get new people in, get them interested and get them comfortable coming in,” she said.

Personal training also saw a boost, with around five new clients signing up. Ewert said trainer Amber was busy with consultations throughout the day.

“That alone made the day a success,” she said.

The YMCA is also adding two new Silver Sneakers classes beginning next week. The classes are designed for beginners, people returning to exercise after a long break, or those recovering from illness or injury.

One class, Silver Sneakers Classic, will focus on low-impact strength training using weights, bands and balls. The second is a chair yoga class. Both will be led by instructor Kim.

Ewert said the classes are meant to help people ease back into physical activity.

“You should never just think, ‘I took this many months off, I’m going to jump right back into where I started,’ because that does not happen,” she said.

Youth basketball is also getting underway, with coaches now contacting families. Games are scheduled to begin February 22.

In addition, the YMCA has launched a Gratitude Miles Challenge. Members can track the miles they walk, run, bike or swim, and write something they’re grateful for on a board in the lobby.

“It’s a good way to remind people that we should be thankful for our health and for our families, and just keep them motivated to continue moving,” Ewert said.

A larger 50-mile challenge is also planned for runners, bikers and swimmers. The first participant in each category to reach 50 miles will receive a prize. Lifters can participate through a separate challenge based on combined weight totals from bench press, deadlift and squat.

Participants must submit videos of their lifts for verification, and winners will be recognized by gender and age groups.

One of the most anticipated additions is indoor pickleball. The YMCA will be adding pickleball court lines to its basketball court, allowing community members to play throughout the winter.

“We’re going to set up times where people can come in and play pickleball here at the Y,” Ewert said.

She noted that many residents currently travel to nearby communities for indoor pickleball, and this will provide a closer option.

Pickleball’s growing popularity reflects the YMCA’s mission of community engagement, something Ewert says is central to the organization’s identity.

“Being able to work for people who want to build our community and do things for our youth in town and just build those relationships with everyone that comes in the door is pretty special,” she said.

Ewert said the growth at the Ogallala YMCA over the past year has been significant, with expanded programs and increased participation.

“Sometimes change is growing pain, but I can say this has been painless for change,” she said.

Ogallala City Council Approves Board Appointments, Infrastructure Plans, and Airport Updates

OGALLALA — The Ogallala City Council kicked off 2026 by approving appointments to multiple city boards, discussing ongoing infrastructure projects, and reviewing plans for airport improvements at Monday night’s meeting.

City Manager Kevin Wilkins highlighted several new board appointments, including the city’s newly formed Historic Preservation Commission. 

“Ogallala is now one of 12 certified local governments with the Nebraska Historic Preservation Commission,” Wilkins said. Barb Jeffries was appointed to a two-year term, and Cody Quinn will serve three years.

 The commission plans to meet January 27, with Nebraska State Historical Preservation Director Kelly Bacon attending to discuss potential updates to the Historic Overlay at Ogallala Middle School.

Additional appointments included Ray Diaz and Jordan Namath to three-year terms on the Planning and Zoning Commission and Richard Kester to the Tree Board. Wilkins encouraged residents interested in trees to apply for the remaining openings.

The council also reviewed updates from the Ogallala YMCA, which has seen growing participation in programs and the city’s pool. Wilkins said the pool’s attendance has “probably tripled” under new management.

 “If you’re going to spend the money, you want to see people using it,” he said. Officials are exploring the possibility of forming a local swim team and expanding youth programming.

Infrastructure needs were also a major topic, including the cost of repairs following a lift station failure on the south side of town. Wilkins explained that the pumps were “probably undersized for the job” and that both failed simultaneously, leading to an emergency discharge of wastewater into a contained area of the river. 

He added, “Fortunately, there was a valve on it, so we got that fixed,” and the city expects the repairs to cost about $200,000.

At the airport, council members approved issuing a request for proposals for a fixed-base operator at Serial Field. Wilkins said the goal is to increase aviation-related business and streamline fuel sales. 

“We would really just like to have more activity at that airport,” he said. Plans include $8 million in runway improvements and additional hangar capacity.

The council also discussed long-term street and drainage projects, including a proposed half-cent infrastructure sales tax aimed at funding repairs while reducing property tax burdens. 

Wilkins said, “Once a lot of your costs are in mobilizing and engineering, you can get some efficiencies. That’s the kind of momentum we need within the community.”

City officials plan to implement online permitting through the Planning and Building Department by February 9 to streamline applications for residents and businesses.

Keith County, Neb. - Keith County Commissioner Lane Anderson shared updates from the county’s January 14 meeting during a recent radio interview, outlining several ongoing projects and administrative actions.

Among the key items discussed were the setting of county elected official salaries and the county’s insurance renewal process. The board also completed its annual reorganization, with Corey Crandall continuing as chairman of the Keith County Board of Commissioners.

Commissioners reviewed year-end reports and discussed creating a nuisance application process that could be used when applying for nuisance-related grants. The county highway department completed its annual fuel bids and recently purchased a scraper and disc in an effort to improve county road maintenance.

Anderson also noted recent personnel changes. Longtime Keith County employee Lori Hood retired after 40 years of service. Commissioners appointed J.D. Cartwright to fill her role as the county’s new Emergency Operations Center director.

Additional updates included ongoing EMS-related discussions, current jail population numbers, and road conditions impacted by dry winter weather. Anderson said he plans to provide regular monthly updates moving forward and confirmed he will be running for re-election this year.

Together with major sports leagues, the IPR Center:

Buying fake merchandise may seem harmless, but it has serious consequences. Whether it’s a fan losing hard-earned money on a fake jersey they were led to believe was authentic, or small businesses that purchased an expensive vendor license losing vital sales, intellectual property theft is a real crime with real victims and real negative financial impacts. This may sound absurd when talking about sports merchandise, but has real consequences for medications, cosmetics, electronics and other types of counterfeit or unlicensed goods and merchandise.

Counterfeit jerseys, hats, rings and other sports merchandise may look like the licensed version, but you could be scammed out of your hard-earned money thinking you are spending money on licensed gear. Counterfeit and unlicensed merchandise is often cheaply made with inferior stitching, dyes and other dangerous materials that can affect consumers’ health. It may not hold up to wear and tear like licensed gear.

Counterfeiting is a worldwide issue and combating it requires a united front. By working together — law enforcement, industry leaders and everyday consumers — we can make a significant impact.

As the Super Bowl approaches officials warn of fake sports gear

LINCOLN, Neb. — Law enforcement officials have confirmed that human remains were discovered during the investigation into the disappearance of a Stromsburg couple who had been missing since mid-January.

According to the Lincoln Police Department, investigators located the remains while executing a search related to the case. Authorities said forensic testing, including DNA analysis, is underway to formally identify the remains.

Police have stated they now believe Hannah Neville and Roberto “Robbie” Tanner are deceased. Neville was pregnant at the time of her disappearance.

The couple was reported missing after Neville failed to return home and could not be contacted. Investigators later located Neville’s vehicle, which had been intentionally set on fire in Lincoln, according to police.

Based on evidence gathered during the investigation, law enforcement identified Sterling James, Tanner’s half-brother, as a suspect. Court records indicate James is charged with:

Authorities also arrested Sayde Titus, who is charged with accessory to murder, accessory to murder of an unborn child, and tampering with evidence, according to court filings.

Law enforcement officials have stated that digital evidence, witness statements, and information obtained through search warrants placed the victims at a residence connected to the suspects on the day they were last seen. Investigators allege evidence was later concealed in an effort to obstruct the investigation.

The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the Lincoln Police Department, Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, and state and federal partners. Officials emphasized that the case remains active as forensic testing continues and additional evidence is processed.

UNMC, UNO team on app that mixes facts and fun

OMAHA, Nebraska — The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) have launched “Zoodemic,” a free mobile app that transforms public health education into a fast-paced, interactive game for middle and high school students.

Designed to meet kids where they are – on their phones – Zoodemic challenges players to survive waves of infectious diseases, from the basics of germs to emerging threats like avian flu and measles. As players level up, they unlock real-world knowledge about hygiene, zoonotic diseases and outbreak prevention.

“We’re not just teaching science – we’re sparking curiosity,” said Ali S. Khan, MD, MPH, dean of the UNMC College of Public Health. “Zoodemic is a fun, engaging way to help youth understand how to stay safe around animals, protect their health, and guard against emerging infectious diseases. It might even inspire the next generation of public health leaders.”

Developed with students from UNO’s Center for Management of IT in the UNO College of Information Science &amp; Technology and Omaha-based tech firm NebDev, the app is built to evolve.&nbsp;Thanks to dynamic backend updates built by NebDev, new levels can be released in response to current outbreaks and public health needs.&nbsp;

According to Deepak Khazanchi, executive director of CMIT, “Zoodemic reflects how digital innovation can support public health education and readiness. CMIT and UNO students designed and developed the app to make complex public health concepts accessible and engaging for young learners. This is one example of a product built in CMIT over two decades of its existence.”

“Mobile games are part of kids’ daily lives,” said Alexandra Todd, health policy analyst at UNMC. “So we embedded accurate, accessible health education into a format they already love.”

The Nebraska Division of Public Health and Nebraska State Health Department also are on board, with grant support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists.

“Zoodemic is a unique and educational way for our community to learn about zoonotic diseases and vaccinations,” said Robin Williams, Nebraska Division of Public Health.

On Thursday, at the direction of U.S. Southern Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations, according to a social media report from the U.S. Southern Command.

Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. 

Two narco-terrorists were killed during this action. No U.S. military forces were harmed.&nbsp; This is the second deadly strike since the&nbsp;raid that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. On January 23, the U.S. carried out a deadly strike on a vessel accused of trafficking drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

&nbsp;The Department of War released no additional details.

On Thursday, the FBI arrested Derrick Callella in Hawthorne, California, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Callella has been charged via a criminal complaint filed in federal court for transmitting a demand for ransom in interstate commerce, and without disclosing his identity, utilizing a telecommunications device with the intent to abuse, threaten, or harass a person.

“The Department of Justice will protect victims and families at all costs, and grief profiteers will be held accountable,” said U.S. Attorney Timothy Courchaine. “This case came together in under 24 hours because of the coordinated work of the FBI, local law enforcement and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.”

“To those imposters who are trying to take advantage and profit from this situation – we will investigate and ensure you are held accountable for your actions,” said FBI Phoenix Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke.

A criminal complaint is simply a method by which a person is charged with criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Man accused of being ransom note ‘imposter’ in Nancy Guthrie case

Kearney, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one person after finding 12 pounds of suspected methamphetamine during a traffic stop on I-80.

Tuesday, at approximately 10:30 a.m., a trooper saw a Toyota Camry speeding at over 100 miles per hour on Interstate 80 near Kearney. During the traffic stop, the trooper became suspicious of criminal activity.

A search of the vehicle revealed 12 pounds of suspected methamphetamine hidden inside the body of the car. The driver, George Watson, 50, of Poplar Grove, Illinois, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession with intent to deliver, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was lodged in Buffalo County Jail.
