&nbsp; The University of Nebraska at Kearney’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/music/index.php">Department of Music, Theatre and Dance</a>&nbsp;welcomed 558 music students from 101 high schools across Nebraska for the annual Honor Band and Choral Clinic on Monday.

The daylong event included rehearsals with UNK faculty and other music educators, followed by public performances at the Health and Sports Center on campus. The concerts also featured the UNK Wind Ensemble and Choraleers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ogallala, Ne – The Ogallala City Council met in regular session Tuesday night. It was a fairly fast meeting. They had an update from the Goodall YMCA and had an update on the new water operator PeopleService Incorporated who took over operation of the water and wastewater operations recently in Ogallala. City Administrator Kevin Wilkins said, “PeopleService has been managing our water and wastewater for about three months now it's been good for staff because they have 110 people that are all trained water operators. Our local staff gets better support. We've retained all the local staff, basically they just see a change of name on their paycheck. They're better supported, communications have improved, and we've achieved some cost savings as a city. We're anticipating even more cost savings as we get into some of those improvements that we need at the wastewater treatment plant because you have that depth of experience. "&nbsp;

The City Council did approve the purchase of a new city bus. The council was already prepared to replace one of the older buses, but the process was sped up because that bus was recently involved in an accident. The council passed a resolution to seek Federal financial aid in the purchase of a new bus. Wilkins said the city would be responsible for about 10% of the purchase.&nbsp;

The Ogallala Tree Board also gave a report. Barb Jeffries told the Council the board has a grant to cut down approximately 15-20 trees in the city that would be deemed a nuisance. Wilkins said the city will be sending letters to homeowners who have been identified as having any nuisance trees. Part of the grant, the tree board has been approved for includes the homeowner agreeing to replace and maintain a new tree. If the homeowner agrees to that, the city will cut down the trees at no cost.&nbsp;

The next Ogallala City Council Meeting is Tuesday, February 11.&nbsp;

Ogallala, Ne - The 49th Annual Keith County Ag Banquet was held Monday night at the Willow and Oak Event Center in Ogallala. 225 people attended the Banquet, which Shawn Rubek, Keith County Tourism Director at Keith County Chamber said was a sellout. 

The Excellence in Agriculture Award went to Andy DeVries, owner and operator of DAD Farms. The crowd was treated to a chicken or brisket meal. The Ogallala and Paxton FFA clubs were present and delivered the meals and bussed the tables afterwards.&nbsp;

DeVries awarded Excellence In Agriculture Award at Keith County Ag Banquet

North Platte, Neb. - On January 23rd, 2025 at 11:15 A.M., North Platte Police Department officers were dispatched to the Lincoln County Detention Center on the report of a possible death. Rebecca Kleckner age 45 was found unresponsive in her cell and was transported to Great Plains Health, where she was pronounced deceased.

 Because Kleckner was in custody at the time of her death, the North Platte Police Department was contacted and is conducting the death investigation in order to meet the statutory obligations of the grand jury process. An autopsy was conducted and the results are pending.

Woman Found Deceased in Lincoln County Jail

KEARNEY – Clayton Moore’s teammates call him a “country boy.”

His older sister Samantha Moore often hears a similar term – “ranch tough.”

They’re both references to the siblings’ blue-collar upbringing and the work ethic, determination and discipline they display as University of Nebraska at Kearney basketball players.

“Where we grew up, there’s not much to do but work,” said Clayton, a redshirt freshman at UNK. “And competitiveness kind of comes along with that. Growing up, all you could really do for fun was compete with each other. It was either that or go outside and work. And competing with each other was more enjoyable than throwing hay bales around or fixing windmills.”

Raised on a ranch in the heart of the Nebraska Sandhills, the Moores have never known a life that didn’t revolve around hard work, humility and sports.

Their parents, Rusty and Jennifer, instilled those values.

They were both standout athletes at Nebraska Wesleyan University, where Jennifer was a volleyball player and five-time All-American in track and field. Rusty also competed in track, earning All-American honors and winning two national championships in the 4×400 relay.

He coached basketball at Mullen High School for 14 years, leading the boys team to its first-ever state title in 2017. Rusty passed away in February 2020 following a two-year battle with brain cancer.

Jennifer taught and coached at Mullen and McPherson County high schools before moving to Alma, where she’s the head volleyball coach and an assistant track coach.

To nobody’s surprise, their children followed in those footsteps.

If they weren’t assisting with chores, the Moore kids were likely challenging each other in some sort of activity.

As youngsters, they played basketball in the house, using tape stuck to the basement wall as a hoop. Later on, those games moved to the driveway, where Clayton and Samantha battled their older brother Lance.

“You can kind of imagine how that went,” Clayton said with a smirk. “Sometimes it got a little rough. I mean, there were no referees out there.”

“I think that’s really where our competitiveness started to grow,” he added.

Although Clayton and Samantha both admit they could have been nicer to each other growing up, that passion and intensity helped fuel their success.

“Over the last couple years, from high school to college, I feel like we’ve grown our friendship,” said Samantha, a senior at UNK. “We’re still competitive, but I feel like we’ve gotten closer.”

Now, if you ask the siblings who the better athlete is, neither will claim that distinction.

Instead, they talk about each other’s accomplishments.

Samantha was a three-sport star at Mullen High School, scoring 1,550 career points in basketball and helping the Broncos finish third in the 2021 Class D2 state tournament. She also led the volleyball team in kills and blocks as a senior and qualified for the Class D state track and field championships in three events, including a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles.

Clayton was equally successful. He averaged 18.1 points and 10.5 rebounds as a senior, earning Class D2 First-Team All-State honors in 2023. Also a three-sport standout, he played quarterback and defensive back for the football team and was a state champion in the 300-meter hurdles and state runner-up in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump and 4×400 relay.

When the time came to select a college, Samantha was the first family member to break the Wesleyan connection.

“I can be the guilty one,” she said with a laugh. “I’ll take the blame for that.”

Samantha was recruited by former UNK coach Carrie Eighmey, who now leads the women’s basketball program at the University of South Dakota.

“Right when I stepped on campus, I knew this was my place,” Samantha said.

The 6-foot guard/forward battled injuries early in her UNK career and played behind some experienced starters. She appeared in eight games as a freshman and 26 as a sophomore. The Lopers reached the NCAA Division II national tournament both seasons.

Eighmey and her staff left the program in spring 2023, but Samantha remained committed to UNK.

“At the end of the day, I wanted to play somewhere where I felt like I was in a sisterhood and a family,” she explained. “I loved my teammates so much that I didn’t want to leave.”

Drew Johnson, who was hired to replace Eighmey, gives Samantha a lot of credit for embracing the new coaching staff with open arms and creating a positive culture that continues to define the team. He calls her a hardworking, high-octane player.

“Sam is someone who brings a lot of energy to the team, whether she’s on or off the court,” Johnson said. “When she’s playing her best basketball, she’s really energetic and engaged, having fun and cracking jokes. That energy really resonates with our team. It’s a lot of fun to be able to coach her because of that.”

After an injury forced her to miss the early part of the season, Samantha came back strong for the Lopers as a junior. She played in 21 games and started 16 of them, averaging 6.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest.

Those numbers are even better this season. Samantha has started all 18 games for the Lopers, who are 15-3 overall and 8-1 in the MIAA. She averages 10 points and a team-leading 7.9 rebounds per game while shooting 37% from 3-point range. Her 60 assists and 10 blocks both rank second on the team.

Samantha recorded what was likely the first triple-double in program history on Dec. 16, when she scored 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 10 assists in a 95-26 victory over York University.

“She’s been really dynamic for us,” Johnson said. “She shoots the 3 at a high percentage. She’s able to post up smaller guards. And she’s a great defender.

“It doesn’t get a lot better in this world than Sam Moore, and I’m thankful to have gotten a chance to coach her.”

Clayton joined his older sister at UNK in fall 2023.

He liked the location and smaller, close-knit community – “I’m not a big-city guy,” he firmly declared – as well as the opportunity play against top-notch teams.

“As athletes, you want to compete at the highest level you possibly can,” Clayton said. “We were given the chance to compete here at UNK, a Division II university in one of the best conferences in the country.”

Like his sister, Clayton stuck with his commitment after a coaching change. That was good news for first-year head coach Marty Levinson, who was hired by his alma mater in April 2024.

He describes Clayton as hardworking, humble, attentive and selfless – “pretty much all the qualities you would want in a teammate.”

“Even though he’s so young and he doesn’t have a ton of on-court playing experience at the college level, he’s already been a leader for us because of those characteristics,” Levinson said.

Following a redshirt season, Clayton is now an important contributor for Levinson and the Loper men, who are 6-11 overall and 4-5 in the conference. He’s played in all 17 games, starting six of them. The 6-foot-4 guard/forward averages 20 minutes, 5.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest.

Calling him a “pusher” who’s always looking to learn and grow, Levinson expects Clayton’s role to continue to expand.

“He’s going to be a difference maker by the time he’s a junior or senior, even by next year,” the UNK coach said. “He’s been a blessing to have, not just on the floor but because of who he is every day.

“Clayton is much more than just a basketball player. He’s an amazing human being. That doesn’t always show up in the box score, but he’s a big part of our recent success.”

Now that they’re 20 and 22 years old, Clayton and Samantha can fully appreciate their relationship and the benefits of having a sibling to lean on.

They live in the same apartment complex, just south of the Health and Sports Center, and often get together to watch sports or play video games.

“Who wouldn’t want to attend the same school as their sibling, hang out and play the same sport?” Samantha said. “It’s so awesome. When we travel on the road, I get to watch my brother play right after us and he gets to watch me play. I’m beyond grateful. It’s such a blessing.”

“I can’t imagine it any other way now,” Clayton added.

Both recognized on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, Samantha is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/ted/elementary-education.php">studying elementary education</a>&nbsp;and Clayton is an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/agribusiness/index.php">agribusiness major</a>. She wants to teach in a small town in Nebraska and he plans to return to the family ranch near Tryon.

Those rural roots run too deep to change.

Rusty also competed in track, earning All-American honors and winning two national championships in the 4×400 relay.He coached basketball at Mullen High School for 14 years, leading the boys team to its first-ever state title in 2017. Rusty passed away in February 2020 following a two-year battle with brain cancer.Jennifer taught and coached at Mullen and McPherson County high schools before moving to Alma, where she’s the head volleyball coach and an assistant track coach.To nobody’s surprise, their children followed in those footsteps.<h2>SIBLING RIVALRY</h2>If they weren’t assisting with chores, the Moore kids were likely challenging each other in some sort of activity.As youngsters, they played basketball in the house, using tape stuck to the basement wall as a hoop. Later on, those games moved to the driveway, where Clayton and Samantha battled their older brother Lance.“You can kind of imagine how that went,” Clayton said with a smirk. “Sometimes it got a little rough. I mean, there were no referees out there.”“I think that’s really where our competitiveness started to grow,” he added.Although Clayton and Samantha both admit they could have been nicer to each other growing up, that passion and intensity helped fuel their success.“Over the last couple years, from high school to college, I feel like we’ve grown our friendship,” said Samantha, a senior at UNK. “We’re still competitive, but I feel like we’ve gotten closer.”Now, if you ask the siblings who the better athlete is, neither will claim that distinction.Instead, they talk about each other’s accomplishments.Samantha was a three-sport star at Mullen High School, scoring 1,550 career points in basketball and helping the Broncos finish third in the 2021 Class D2 state tournament. She also led the volleyball team in kills and blocks as a senior and qualified for the Class D state track and field championships in three events, including a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles.Clayton was equally successful. He averaged 18.1 points and 10.5 rebounds as a senior, earning Class D2 First-Team All-State honors in 2023. Also a three-sport standout, he played quarterback and defensive back for the football team and was a state champion in the 300-meter hurdles and state runner-up in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump and 4×400 relay.<h2>VERSATILE VETERAN</h2>When the time came to select a college, Samantha was the first family member to break the Wesleyan connection.“I can be the guilty one,” she said with a laugh. “I’ll take the blame for that.”Samantha was recruited by former UNK coach Carrie Eighmey, who now leads the women’s basketball program at the University of South Dakota.“Right when I stepped on campus, I knew this was my place,” Samantha said.The 6-foot guard/forward battled injuries early in her UNK career and played behind some experienced starters. She appeared in eight games as a freshman and 26 as a sophomore. The Lopers reached the NCAA Division II national tournament both seasons.Eighmey and her staff left the program in spring 2023, but Samantha remained committed to UNK.“At the end of the day, I wanted to play somewhere where I felt like I was in a sisterhood and a family,” she explained. “I loved my teammates so much that I didn’t want to leave.”Drew Johnson, who was hired to replace Eighmey, gives Samantha a lot of credit for embracing the new coaching staff with open arms and creating a positive culture that continues to define the team. He calls her a hardworking, high-octane player.“Sam is someone who brings a lot of energy to the team, whether she’s on or off the court,” Johnson said. “When she’s playing her best basketball, she’s really energetic and engaged, having fun and cracking jokes. That energy really resonates with our team. It’s a lot of fun to be able to coach her because of that.”She’s also very versatile.After an injury forced her to miss the early part of the season, Samantha came back strong for the Lopers as a junior. She played in 21 games and started 16 of them, averaging 6.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest.Those numbers are even better this season. Samantha has started all 18 games for the Lopers, who are 15-3 overall and 8-1 in the MIAA. She averages 10 points and a team-leading 7.9 rebounds per game while shooting 37% from 3-point range. Her 60 assists and 10 blocks both rank second on the team.Samantha recorded what was likely the first triple-double in program history on Dec. 16, when she scored 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 10 assists in a 95-26 victory over York University.“She’s been really dynamic for us,” Johnson said. “She shoots the 3 at a high percentage. She’s able to post up smaller guards. And she’s a great defender.“It doesn’t get a lot better in this world than Sam Moore, and I’m thankful to have gotten a chance to coach her.”<h2>YOUNG LEADER</h2>Clayton joined his older sister at UNK in fall 2023.He liked the location and smaller, close-knit community – “I’m not a big-city guy,” he firmly declared – as well as the opportunity play against top-notch teams.“As athletes, you want to compete at the highest level you possibly can,” Clayton said. “We were given the chance to compete here at UNK, a Division II university in one of the best conferences in the country.”Like his sister, Clayton stuck with his commitment after a coaching change. That was good news for first-year head coach Marty Levinson, who was hired by his alma mater in April 2024.He describes Clayton as hardworking, humble, attentive and selfless – “pretty much all the qualities you would want in a teammate.”“Even though he’s so young and he doesn’t have a ton of on-court playing experience at the college level, he’s already been a leader for us because of those characteristics,” Levinson said.Following a redshirt season, Clayton is now an important contributor for Levinson and the Loper men, who are 6-11 overall and 4-5 in the conference. He’s played in all 17 games, starting six of them. The 6-foot-4 guard/forward averages 20 minutes, 5.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest.Calling him a “pusher” who’s always looking to learn and grow, Levinson expects Clayton’s role to continue to expand.“He’s going to be a difference maker by the time he’s a junior or senior, even by next year,” the UNK coach said. “He’s been a blessing to have, not just on the floor but because of who he is every day.“Clayton is much more than just a basketball player. He’s an amazing human being. That doesn’t always show up in the box score, but he’s a big part of our recent success.”<h2>STRONG BONDS</h2>Now that they’re 20 and 22 years old, Clayton and Samantha can fully appreciate their relationship and the benefits of having a sibling to lean on.They live in the same apartment complex, just south of the Health and Sports Center, and often get together to watch sports or play video games.“Who wouldn’t want to attend the same school as their sibling, hang out and play the same sport?” Samantha said. “It’s so awesome. When we travel on the road, I get to watch my brother play right after us and he gets to watch me play. I’m beyond grateful. It’s such a blessing.”“I can’t imagine it any other way now,” Clayton added.Both recognized on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, Samantha is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/ted/elementary-education.php">studying elementary education</a>&nbsp;and Clayton is an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/agribusiness/index.php">agribusiness major</a>. She wants to teach in a small town in Nebraska and he plans to return to the family ranch near Tryon.Those rural roots run too deep to change.

Families 1st Partnership will sponsor 5 local youth and 2 advisors with Las Mananitas Community Advocates as they attend Legislative Days on February 1-3 in Ashland, NE.

Legislative Days is a 3 day event that offers older youth interactive opportunities to learn about the legislative process, prepare presentations on a legislative bill, develop skills in problem solving and public speaking, visit the NE Unicameral, and meet with the state senators.

Prior to the event, the youth have an opportunity to learn more about upcoming legislative bills so they have an understanding of the discussions that will take place during their day at the NE State Capitol. They may choose particular bills to research and present their perspective. The group have selected LB 318, LB 319, and Senator Hunt’s Immigration bill. Translation services will be available since the youth participating are Spanish speaking.

In the past year, Las Mananitas Community Advocates have had youth involved in YOLO (Youth Outreach Learning &amp; Overcoming), a youth chapter to develop leadership skills, community engagement, and life skills. The youth chapter is a leadership model promoted by NE Chlldren and Families Foundation and sponsored locally by Families 1st Partnership.

A Send-Off is planned for 5 pm Friday January 31,2025 at 304 East 6th Street.

(North Platte, Nebraska) - Local event organizers are dedicated to creating fun and exciting events in North Platte and Lincoln County that attract visitors and boost the economic vitality of our community. Visit North Platte’s Promotional Grant Awards are specifically designed to promote, encourage, and draw visitors to Lincoln County, for these events. The grant funds, as well as the marketing and operating expenses for Visit North Platte, are entirely funded by lodging taxes collected from overnight stays at lodging properties within the county.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Visit North Platte Board of Directors approved grant funding at the monthly meeting on January 22, 2025, for the following. The applications totaled $87,981.98 in requests and a total of $57,073.98 was awarded. Events receiving funds are estimated to generate $2.8 million in spending in the North Platte area in the second quarter of 2025.&nbsp;

The next round of funding is now open, with an April 1 deadline for events or projects occurring in July, August, and September of 2025. These applications will be considered at the regular monthly Board of Directors meeting scheduled for April 23, 2025. Anyone interested in submitting a grant application is encouraged to contact the Visitors Bureau at 308-532-4729 and discuss their project with a staff member.&nbsp;

Visit North Platte operates under an agreement with the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners to facilitate the Nebraska Visitors Development Act. Grant funds, marketing, and operating expenses for Visit North Platte are funded by lodging taxes collected and remitted by lodging properties from overnight stays in Lincoln County.&nbsp;

It is thanks to the efforts of the lodging property partners located within the county that funds are available to attract more visitors, which have a significant impact on the economic well-being of our Lincoln County communities.&nbsp;

Continuing to host softball in North Platte keeps us on the map as a destination for future tournaments, gives visiting players and their families the chance to explore our city, and offers our residents the opportunity to enjoy watching the sport.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Approved $5,100 in Grant Funds for the Gail Wicks Fastpitch Softball Tournament. The Mid-Plains Community College Softball Team will host the tournament on June 27-29. This is a sanctioned USA fastpitch softball tournament for ages 10 and under to 18 and under and is open to all levels of fastpitch softball players. The tournament is expected to bring in 30 teams and will begin with pool play and continue with tournament play throughout the weekend.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Approved $7,637.48 in Grant Funds for the Flatrock Youth Baseball Tournament. What started as a tournament with 19 teams has grown to a tournament with 60 teams out of Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, and Wyoming. This event continues to bring athletes and their families to North Platte to experience not only baseball but everything else our community has to offer. This tournament is scheduled for April 26-27 and will use the ball fields in Centennial Park, Cody Park, and the Dowhower Softball Complex.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Approved $4,000 in Grant Funding for the Spring Bash Youth Baseball Tournament. This new tournament will bring in 56 teams from across the state as well as from neighboring states to compete. Each team will play a minimum of four games. It will also feature a home run derby and a skills competition. This tournament is scheduled for Mary 17-28 and will use the ball fields in Centennial Park, Cody Park, and the Dowhower Softball Complex.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Approved $6,280 in Grant Funds for the Miss Nebraska Scholarship Organization. The Miss Nebraska Scholarship competition is one of North Platte’s signature events and their committee continues to provide Nebraska contestants with an exceptional experience and many scholarship opportunities. Miss Nebraska will host a plethora of events in North Platte June 2-7, with the final two days of the event featuring a fast-paced and entertaining show at the North Platte Highschool Auditorium. This year will be the 40th consecutive year that Miss Nebraska has been held in North Platte and that will be highlighted during the event as well.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Approved $2,000 in Grant Funds for Music on the Bricks. Music on the Bricks has become a North Platte staple since it began in 2017. The event not only showcases the beautiful downtown Canteen District but also highlights area talent by giving them a chance to perform for a large crowd. There are also vendors, food, and kids’ activities which make it a great time for the entire family. Visitors like to experience destinations by engaging with the locals and seeing what events they gravitate towards. The spring Music on the Bricks event will be held in May.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Approved $5,000 in Grant Funds for the Ultimate Bull Riding Tour 7th Annual Bucking Battle and Bash. This event happening on May 23-34 continues to grow each year and offers family friendly entertainment to our visitors and locals alike through bull riding. Stock contractors come from all over the Midwest, with past bull riders coming from not only the United States but also Brazil, Mexico, and New Zealand. Both riders and contractors are competing to win the UBT year end and North Platte is excited to be a stop on the tour. This event will be held at the D&amp;N Event Center.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Approved $4,000 in Grant Funds for the American Stock Dog Registry Show. The American Stock Dog Registry (ASDR) hosts eight shows across the nation annually and will be bringing one to the D&amp;N Event Center in North Platte on July 11-13. This will be the only ASDR Show in the state of Nebraska for 2025. This dog show is estimated to showcase 150+ dogs and will bring in dog enthusiasts as well. There will be vendors on site and spectators are welcome free of charge. All of the dogs competing will be herding breeds and the event will showcase their ability to work. The agility course trials will be on Friday. Conformation will be on Saturday and Sunday as well as a Junior Showmanship.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Approved $8,284 in Grant Funds to North Platte Pickleball for their PFA Round Up Tournament &amp; Grand Opening of the Cody Park Pickleball Courts. The North Platte Pickleball Club is hosting a tournament June 19-22 at the newly renovated Cody Park Pickleball Courts. As the sport of pickleball continues to grow in popularity, hosting tournaments like this gives our community the opportunity to draw in competitors from surrounding communities while also offering recreational opportunities for our local residents. This will also be a great opportunity to showcase our newly expanded and updated pickleball courts.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Approved $500 in Grant Funds to Deborah’s Legacy Landscape &amp; Garden Tour. The local non-profit group Deborah’s Legacy will be hosting their third annual Landscape &amp; Garden Tour on June 27-28. This event features different homes and locations throughout the community that have exceptional outdoor spaces with impressive landscapes, gardens, flower beds, and more. Ticket purchasers will receive a list of the locations and be able to visit them at their own pace during the scheduled times throughout the weekend. There will also be a market event in conjunction. Locals have grown to enjoy this tour as well as attendees of NEBRASKAland Days who are visiting our community. Deborah’s Legacy will also share information about the event with garden clubs and green houses in surrounding communities to help grow tour attendance even more in 2025.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Approved $2,172.50 in Grant Funds to the Lincoln County Historical Museum for their annual Heritage Festival. The Lincoln County Historical Museum hosts a Heritage Festival each summer to celebrate history, culture, and traditions. This two-day event includes live music, food and gift vendors, and tons of demonstrations, such as, stationary hay bailing, corn shelling, blacksmithing, quilting, and more. You will also find a model train show, a tractor show, and an antique car show - as well as a parade. With hands-on activities for visitors of all ages, this event is the perfect family outing that mixes fun and education. The 2025 event will also feature Jody Ingalls of Encore History. Jody performs a one-woman show that combines multiple characters, costumes, and songs to tell the story of the WWII era which ties in perfectly with the museums North Platte Canteen exhibit.&nbsp;</li>
 </ul>The next round of funding is now open, with an April 1 deadline for events or projects occurring in July, August, and September of 2025. These applications will be considered at the regular monthly Board of Directors meeting scheduled for April 23, 2025. Anyone interested in submitting a grant application is encouraged to contact the Visitors Bureau at 308-532-4729 and discuss their project with a staff member.&nbsp;Visit North Platte operates under an agreement with the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners to facilitate the Nebraska Visitors Development Act. Grant funds, marketing, and operating expenses for Visit North Platte are funded by lodging taxes collected and remitted by lodging properties from overnight stays in Lincoln County.&nbsp;It is thanks to the efforts of the lodging property partners located within the county that funds are available to attract more visitors, which have a significant impact on the economic well-being of our Lincoln County communities.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - When most folks here 4-H, they instantly think it's animal showing, which there is plenty of that. However, there are different areas of activities for 4-H'rs to get involved in and one of those areas is the entrepreneurship project.&nbsp;

Emersyn Sheard, a local 4-h'r for Lincoln, Logan and McPherson County spent this past summer doing different activities but one of those activities was her entrepreneurship project which was a robot that can clean your room.&nbsp;

"For my four H entrepreneurship project, I identified a problem that I think most people relate to keeping their room clean. I know we can all struggle with that, and it can be overwhelming to find the time and motivation to tidy up. So, I came up with a solution, a robot that could clean your room for you, " said Emersyon Sheard. " I designed a prototype which was more like a concept or an idea to show what the robot could look like and how it could work. Through this project I learned about the importance of problem solving. It was fun to learn how to gather data with a survey."&nbsp;

Sheard also participated in food and nutrition, sewing, entrepreneurship and art and crafts and plans on to do many of those activities once again this summer.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Nebraska Library Commission&nbsp;recently awarded&nbsp;Nebraska Library Internship Grants&nbsp;totaling $20,000 to sixteen Nebraska public libraries. These internship grants will support public library interns who will contribute to the scope and value of the diverse programs and activities in Nebraska’s public libraries.

“The internships are a great opportunity for students to get involved in library work. Beyond earning money and gaining valuable work experience, the student is exposed to the broad range of library services and programming. Internships provide an opportunity for the student to view the library as a viable and satisfying career choice. In addition, interns bring a fresh perspective and their own unique talents to the library,” said Nebraska Library Commission Director Rod Wagner.

Student interns will learn about library work as they shadow staff, assist with day-to-day library operations, and implement special projects. Some of the activities that students will participate in include:

As the state library agency, the&nbsp;Nebraska Library Commission&nbsp;is an advocate for the library and information needs of all Nebraskans. The mission of the Library Commission is statewide promotion, development, and coordination of library and information services, “bringing together people and information.”

Nebraska’s Regional Library Systems&nbsp;consist of four non-profit corporations governed by boards representative of libraries and citizens in the region. The four systems were established to provide access to improved library services through the cooperation of all types of libraries and media centers within the counties included in each System area.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages parents and young adults to know if they are protected from HPV. Human Papillomavirus or HPV is a common virus that can cause cancer later in life.

“The HPV shot is a cancer prevention vaccine, one of the only ones we have,” explains Melissa Propp, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “This is a simple way to help prevent some forms of cancer as you get older.”

HPV is passed from one person to another during skin-to-skin contact with an infected part of the body. It can also be spread through sexual contact. HPV can be spread even when someone with the virus does not have any symptoms.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about 85% of people will get HPV infection in their lifetime. About 13 million people become infected each year and it is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the US. Most of these infections are asymptomatic (no symptoms) and will clear on their own; however, persistent infections can cause pre-cancers, cervical cancer, or oropharyngeal cancer (of the mouth or throat) in both men and women.

HPV vaccine is recommended for people aged 9 to 26 and is usually given at the age of 11 to 12 along with other routine shots for 7th grade. Adults aged 27-45 may also get the vaccine after discussing their risks with a healthcare provider.

CDC studies continue to prove HPV vaccination works extremely well, decreasing the number of HPV infections and HPV precancers in people who have been vaccinated.

If you are unsure if you or your child is up to date on their HPV vaccines, talk to your healthcare provider or contact the public health nurse at SWNPHD. You can also look up your shot records in the Nebraska State Immunization Information System (NESIIS) at nesiis-dhhs-prod.ne.gov.

Preventing HPV-Related Cancers

North Platte, Neb. - Exciting times are upon us at the North Platte Regional Airport is making numerous changes. Earlier in the fall, the city welcomed state and federal leaders alongside local leaders, community members and more for the groundbreaking ceremony of the new terminal building.&nbsp;

The terminal will bring a new, modern look. Also, the terminal is scheduled to be done in Spring 2026, but if nice weather continues, the project could move along a tad bit quicker. While the terminal has been the highlight at the airport, the committee have brained storm and discussed new projects to be done. North Platte also saw a record-breaking year in 2024 and wants to build off that success.&nbsp;

POST news director Canon Rath had the chance to with Dan Phelps from the North Platte Airport Authority. The duo discussed the new terminal, how expansion of the airport can help economic development in North Platte, how the existing building will be repurposed and so much more. Knight's Weekly #6 featuring North Platte Community College Men's Basketball Coach Jacob Brandl

A total of 116 students qualified for the President’s List during the 2024 fall semester at Mid-Plains Community College.

To make the list, each student had to complete 12 or more applicable credit hours in college-level courses and maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.9 or greater on a 4.0 scale. The qualifiers were:

The Hot Sheets: January 25th, 2025

At approximately 3:55 AM this morning, the Sidney Police Department was involved in a vehicle pursuit. An officer traveling southbound on 11th Avenue observed a van strike a street sign near Creast View Apartments, nearly colliding with the officer's vehicle. The van then accelerated northbound on 11th Avenue at a high rate of speed, estimated to exceed 90 miles per hour.

The officer activated emergency lights and initiated a pursuit. The pursuit concluded when the suspect vehicle collided with the Rolling Pin Bakery and Sonny's Super Foods. The officer immediately rendered medical aid to the driver and requested assistance from Emergency Medical Services and the Fire Department.

The Sidney Police Department adheres to strict pursuit policies, emphasizing a thorough risk-to-benefit assessment before engaging in a pursuit. In this instance, the driver demonstrated a disregard for public safety prior to police involvement, having already collided with a street sign.

During the pursuit, the officer requested supervisor notification, and provided updates on traffic conditions and safety concerns. The entire incident, from initial contact to the vehicle collision, lasted less than 60 seconds.

The Nebraska State Patrol has been requested to conduct an accident reconstruction using drones. The incident remains under investigation. Officers will be canvassing the area to gather any available video footage.

We are also compiling a list of any other objects that may have been struck by the suspect vehicle prior to police contact. If you have observed any damage to your property that may be related to this incident, please contact the Sidney Police Department so that we can document and address any claims.
