NORTH PLATTE, NEB. – More than 250 kids and their families flooded the cobblestone streets of downtown North Platte to learn about where their food, fiber, and energy come from at the inaugural Agriculture on the Bricks event on June 8.
Hosted by the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation and North Platte Public Schools Kids Klub, the event was designed to provide the community with an opportunity to explore the vast world of agriculture. Kids and their families participated in hands-on activities and interacted with farmers and ranchers as they learned how food gets from the farm to their plate.
“Agriculture on the Bricks was a huge success!” said Emily Kammerer, education specialist for the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation. “Our goal was to create an accessible, family-friendly event that gave children the chance to explore and learn about our state’s leading industry: agriculture. It was awesome to see families all the way from Ogallala to Kearney come together and celebrate agriculture!”
Kids participated in activities like Cover Crop Monster to explore how farmers protect their soil by planting cover crops as well as an agricultural careers activity where they matched different careers in agriculture to the correct description to receive a prize.
“When a community understands how their food, fiber, and energy are produced, they are able to confidently make decisions about their resources,” said Megahn Schafer, executive director of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation. “We are elated to see the community’s excitement in the North Platte area about agriculture and hope the conversation continues about the vitality of agriculture.”
