\SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Creighton men’s tennis team captured the Flight 1 Doubles Championship as the Bluejays wrapped up play at the Augustana Invite on Sunday evening in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Junior Rocky McKenzie and sophomore Mathis Dahler rolled to a 6-2 semifinal win over Gustavus Adolphus’ Takura Mhwandagara and Dominik Knutson, while teammates Maxime Gruenig and Neil Saxer edged out Nebraska-Kearney’s Andy Brisdon and Ivan Melnik, 7-6 (8-6) in the semifinals to set up an all-Bluejay final in Flight 1. Due to the two Bluejay squads advancing to the finals, the match was abandoned.
In flight 2, sophomore’s Jack McMahon and Lucas Mommessin picked up a 6-3 win over Augustana’s Thomas Kano and Sebastian Garcia in semifinals but dropped a tight 6-3 decision to Gustavus’ Ethan Ellor and Christian Wean Wong to finish as the flights runner-up.
In singles play, freshman Sebastian Papp finished as the runner-up in flight 2 as Augustana’s Pedro Pinto rallied from a one-set deficit to claim the title with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 three-set victory.
Creighton returns to the courts on September 25-27 as the Bluejays host the Creighton Invite at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha.
