Donal L. "Don" Most, 91, of Ogallala, NE died Friday, January 19, 2024 at Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala.
Don was born March 22, 1932, on the Most farm southeast of Ogallala, NE to William and Helen (Gamble) Most. He was baptized on December 16, 1942 and confirmed his Christian faith on May 5, 1946, both at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ogallala. He attended District 7 Country School and Ogallala High School, graduating in 1950. After graduation, Don returned to the family farm to work alongside his father; he took over the farm following his father's death in 1951.
On April 17, 1955, he was united in marriage to Anita Anne Gengenbach at Zion Lutheran Church in Grant, NE. In December of 1955, Don entered the US Army and was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, KS. After his discharge in 1956, he returned to Keith County and continued the farming operation. The couple resided on the Most family farm, which was Don's lifelong home. He lived most of his 91 years of life in the same farmhouse-right up until the last couple of months before his passing.
Don was a devoted farmer and had an unmistakable love for the land and livestock. In addition to raising his row crops and cattle, he enjoyed many summer hours tending to his melon and pumpkin patches over the years. If he wasn’t out working on the farm, he could be found supporting his grandchildren at their various competitions, concerts, 4-H livestock shows and other activities. Don enjoyed cheering on his favorite sports teams, the Ogallala Indians and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Don was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church, southeast of Ogallala, and served there in several leadership roles. For many years, he was a member of the Lutheran Layman’s League bowling team and could always be counted on to show up early with his riding mower when the dandelions in the churchyard were getting too tall for his liking.
Don will be remembered by those who knew and loved him for his love of coffee (black, and never hot enough), the stories he told (always ending with a laugh), and the ornery twinkle in his eye.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen Most, and his siblings, Thelma Bush, Harold Most, Howard Most, Phyllis Speer, William Most, and Freda Howell.
Survivors include his wife of over 68 years, Anita; his son Samuel (Jody) Most; his daughter, Melanie Most; and three grandchildren, Micah Most, Amanda (Matt) Hoffmann, and Caleb Most.
Visitation will be at St. John's Lutheran Church, southeast of Ogallala, on Thursday, January 26, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 27, 2024, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Rev. Albert Bader officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery.
