John Douglas Kraus, 91, of Madrid, passed away on February 28, 2024, at the Imperial Manor in Imperial, NE.
Doug was born on July 23, 1932, in Madrid, NE to John P. and Barbara K. (Zieons) Kraus. He attended country grade school northeast of Grant until the 8th grade before graduating from St Patrick's Catholic School in Sidney. Following his education, Doug entered the US Army, where he served during the Korean War.
On January 14, 1956, Doug married Esther Lanckriet at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Julesburg, CO. The couple settled on a farm near Madrid, NE, where they raised their four children: Christine, Debra, Timothy, and Mark. John's life was deeply rooted in the values of hard work and family.
Following his education, John dedicated himself to farming and had a special love for the corn harvest and all that was involved. Doug started his trucking business later in life, which was something he also really enjoyed.
Throughout his life, Doug was known for his strong work ethic and his commitment to his family. In addition to his farming and family life, he loved Cornhusker Football and working on puzzles.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Kraus; his siblings, William, Karl, and Lou; and his brother-in-law, Len Johnson.
Survivors include his children, Chris Wendell of Grant, Deb Kraus of Madrid, Tim Kraus of Ogallala, and Mark Kraus of Madrid; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Marty Ising, Marietta Johnson, Tom (Janet) Kraus, Gerry (Shari) Kraus, Chris (Janice) Kraus, Kay (George) Meeks, and Pat (Joan) Kraus; sister-in-law, Patti Kraus; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A memorial has been established in John's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com.
A private family graveside service will be held at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at a later date.
