NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– The Prairie Strips Field Day at the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Center in Grant, Nebraska, on September 24 will showcase the benefits of prairie strips and Conservation Reserve Programs, specifically CP43.
Beginning at 10 a.m. MDT, the field day will offer presentations from various professionals from Nebraska Extension, Nebraska Pheasants Forever and the Iowa State University Prairie STRIPS team. A complimentary lunch will be provided to those in attendance with their registration.
The event will also feature site visits that will showcase the prairie strips plots at the Stumpf International Wheat Center and a nearby active CP43 contract to give an example of a Conservation Reserve Program in action.
Iowa State University describes prairie strips as a conservation effort that protects water and soil while providing area wildlife a habitat. For farmers, this practice can reduce sediment movement on their field and decrease phosphorus and nitrogen loss from runoff.
The Conservation Reserve Program CP43 is specific to prairie strips and can provide farmers with many benefits that go beyond their field. Some additional benefits of enrolling in CP43 include 10 to 15 years of annual rental payments, 50% cost-share assistance for establishment costs, and a signing incentive payment and a practice incentive payment.
