North Platte, NE –The West Central District Health Department Announces Leadership Transition

After nearly 17 years of dedicated service to the community, Shannon Vanderheiden, Executive Director of the West Central District Health Department (WCDHD), will be stepping down from her position, effective December 31, 2024. Vanderheiden’s unwavering commitment to advancing public health initiatives has significantly shaped the health and well-being of residents across the district.

Under Vanderheiden’s leadership, WCDHD has seen remarkable growth and success, including the implementation of critical public health programs and services. Her tireless work helped build a healthier future for the area, and her contributions will be remembered for years to come.

The WCDHD Board of Health has selected Meghan Trevino, currently Assistant Executive Director, as the incoming Executive Director. Trevino, a North Platte resident, joined WCDHD in 2020 and has served as Assistant Executive Director for the past 2.5 years. Trevino brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to continuing the organization’s mission of promoting health and well-being. With her experience and dedication to public health, Trevino is well-prepared to take on this important leadership role.

"I am truly honored to step into this role and continue the important work of WCDHD,” said Trevino. "Our community’s health and well-being is our top priority, and I look forward to working closely with our team and community partners to build on the foundation Shannon has laid. I am committed to continuing our work to promote health, prevent disease, and serve the diverse needs of our communities. Together, we will build on the strong foundation already in place and ensure every resident has access to the resources they need to thrive."

Reflecting on her nearly 17-year journey with West Central District Health Department, Vanderheiden shared, “I am deeply grateful and blessed that during my time as Executive Director, I have experienced years filled with opportunities, growth, and meaningful relationships within the walls of the health department and throughout the communities of our six counties. Together, we have achieved so much and faced challenges that have strengthened our community and our commitment to the well-being of all we serve. 

To my staff, we have shared moments where our resilience was tested beyond what we believed to be our capacity. If there is one thing that I can give my staff that they hold for a lifetime, it is my deep gratitude and appreciation to each one of them. Their dedication and passion for keeping our community healthy and safe have been the driving force behind our success. I am truly honored and blessed to have worked alongside each of you.”

Shannon Vanderheiden leaves behind a legacy, having led WCDHD through years of growth and innovation. Her efforts in public health have been pivotal in improving the lives of individuals and families across the district. The Board of Health extends its sincere appreciation for her years of service. Scott Gaites, Board of Health President, stated, “We are grateful for Shannon's leadership, vision, and commitment to our mission. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors as she embarks on this new chapter.”
