Berenice Maxine Caress, age 93, departed peacefully on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at the Columbine Manor in Salida, CO. Berenice was born in Dundy County, Nebraska on January 11, 1931, to William and Nora Reiman. Berenice married DeWayne “Shad” Caress in May of 1952. Berenice and Shad had three children: Robert, Roxi and Robin. The Family resided for many years in Benkelman, NE before moving to Leadville, CO where Berenice accepted a job with Lake County School District as an Elementary School Teacher. The couple returned to Stratton, NE during their retirement years due to Shad’s health.
Berenice took pride in her educational accomplishments having earned her Bachelor’s in Education from Kearney State College and her Master’s in Education from Adams State College. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma for many years. Berenice was a devout Catholic who dedicated her free time to The Third Order of Franciscans and The Altar and Rosary Society. Berenice could always be found with a book in her hand, and spent many enjoyable hours at the library. She had a love for animals, and especially enjoyed the companionship of her dog Skeeter. Spending time with her family was one of her greatest passions and enjoyments. Her love for people was evident in the way she would always offer her support and prayers for any in need. Berenice was thoughtful, generous, and kind to anyone who had the pleasure of crossing paths with her.
Berenice is survived by two of her children, Robert “Bob” Caress (Gloria) and Roxi Garrett (Mike), seven grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband Shad, her parents, her son Robin “Pat”, grandchildren – Jayme and Shawn, and eight siblings.
A Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Stratton, NE on Saturday April 27, 2024, at 10:30 A.M. (Central Time) Immediately followed by a Memorial Mass at 11:00 A.M. (Central Time) with Fr. Matt Eickhoff officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Benkelman Cemetery, Benkelman, NE at 2:00 PM (Central Time).
