Michael W. Shumpert, aka "Billy," "Stargazer," and "Papa Shump," age 74, a fifty-five-year resident of North Platte, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, Nebraska after battling cancer.  Michael has gone to his heavenly home, where he was welcomed by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his loving wife, Patty, who predeceased him.
Michael was born on October 5, 1952, in Columbus, Mississippi, the son of Murrel D. Shumpert and Margaret Faye (nee Crawford) Shumpert.  He married Patricia "Patty" Sue Tolly on September 29, 1973, and together they had two sons, Michael Jonathan and Matthew William, and a daughter, Melissa Sue, who was stillborn.
Michael was a loving, generous, compassionate, faithful family man.  He was a talented machinist whose mechanical expertise earned the respect of his colleagues.  During his career with the Union Pacific Railroad, his exceptional troubleshooting abilities earned him multiple challenge coins recognizing his ability to diagnose and repair locomotive problems that had stumped others.  Although a serious spinal injury in 1997 left him unable to continue his career, Michael's mechanical knowlege and resourcefulness remained.  Unable to do the work himself, he would still talk family and friends through their home repairs or lend advice for troubleshooting various technical problems.
Michael loved Nebraska's fresh air, clean waters, and wide-open spaces.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman in his younger years and treasured time spent enjoying Nebraska's natural beauty.  Michael could spend hours casting a line at his favorite fishing hole or slowly walking snow-covered fields and tree lines in search of pheasants.  He often took his sons, as well as other family members and close friends, with him on these sojourns into nature.
Michael remained resilient to the end, even after the loss of his beloved wife, Patty, in December 2022.  He endured serious health challenges over the past three decades, but he always endeavored to maintain his independence.  Even as his strength declined during his battle with cancer, his determination remained evident as he continued fighting until the very end.
Michael deeply valued the companionship of loved ones and friends.  He took great joy in being surrounded by the people he cared about, finding happiness in moments spent with family and close friends.  Michael was beloved for his welcoming nature and the way he extended his love beyond blood relationships.  He had a special gift for making people feel that they belonged, wherever he went.  When you were with Michael, he had a way of making you feel as though you were the most important person in the room.
Michael loved Jesus and wanted to share His loved with everyone.  He was knowledgeable about the Bible and spent years growing in his faith.  During his younger years, he served as a lay evangelist and led large Bible studies with as many as 30 people in their home at times.  Together, Michael and Patty helped guide others toward the love of Christ.  Michael overcame a challenging beginning in life and extended kindness to many, strengthened by his faith in Jesus and the love of a wonderful woman, his wife, Patty.
Those left to cherish Michael's memory include his sons, Michael J. (Katherine) Shumpert of Lincoln, NE and Matthew W. Shumpert of North Platte, NE; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family members.
Michael was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patty; his parents, Murrel and Margaret Shumpert; his infant daughter, Melissa Sue; his sisters, Sherril, Sandra, and Diane; and his brothers, Greg, Jimmy, and Dan.
