NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — The City of North Platte, in partnership with Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful, is encouraging residents to participate in a weeklong community cleanup effort running from June 2 through June 9.
As part of the initiative, roll-off dumpsters will be available free of charge for in-town residential customers at two locations: the southeast parking lot of Centennial Park and the north end of the parking lot at the City of North Platte Public Service Building, located at 1402 North Jeffers.
The cleanup program is intended to assist residents in maintaining their properties and promoting a cleaner community. Residents can dispose of items such as furniture, small appliances, and miscellaneous junk. However, certain items are prohibited, including commercial building materials, yard waste, hazardous materials, asbestos, tires, concrete, electronics, and refrigerated appliances.
“This program gives residents a great opportunity to clean up their properties while following the rules to ensure we can continue offering it in the future,” said Mona Anderson, Executive Director of Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful. “Together, we can make North Platte a cleaner, greener, more beautiful place to live, work and play.”
The dumpsters are strictly for residential use and will be monitored regularly. Anyone found dumping prohibited materials or leaving items on the ground outside the dumpsters may face charges. The city will service and empty the bins as needed.
Due to past misuse, the number of dumpsters has been reduced this year to improve oversight and minimize illegal dumping.
“Last year this program was very successful, but there was some misuse,” said Steve Mentzer, Public Service Director. “We want this program to be effective. It discourages illegal dumping and promotes a beautiful community.”
In addition to the cleanup program, residents can dispose of yard waste such as tree limbs and grass clippings at the North Platte Transfer Station Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hazardous waste is accepted at the Hazardous Waste Facility at 1308 North Sycamore on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Electronics can be recycled at ABC Recycling for a per-pound fee, and tires are accepted at the Transfer Station for a fee.
