A piece of living railroad history is headed through western Nebraska next month, as Union Pacific’s famed Big Boy No. 4014 makes several stops across the region during its 2026 coast-to-coast tour.

The world’s largest operating steam locomotive is traveling across the country as part of a nationwide celebration leading up to America’s 250th anniversary. Before heading east, Big Boy will pass through Nebraska with multiple whistle-stops, including in Ogallala, North Platte and Gothenburg.

According to Union Pacific, the locomotive is scheduled to stop in Ogallala at noon on May 26. It will then make additional appearances across the state, including Gothenburg on May 28 expected as part of the western Nebraska route. There is a private event for Union Pacific employees scheduled during the stop in North Platte on May 27, but there will be no public access.

These whistle-stops typically last 15 to 30 minutes, giving the public a chance to see the historic locomotive up close as it continues its journey.

Big Boy No. 4014 was originally built in 1941 and is the only operating locomotive of its kind. The massive steam engine has become a symbol of American rail history, representing the role railroads played in building the nation’s economy and connecting communities.

The 2026 tour marks the first time Big Boy will travel to the East Coast, including a Fourth of July celebration in Philadelphia, as part of a rare collaboration between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern.

Union Pacific officials say the tour not only highlights the railroad’s history, but also honors the people and communities that helped shape the country over the past 250 years.
