Dr. Mark Kimball McKenzie, age 66, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on July 19, 2026. Born on December 11, 1959, in Ames, Iowa, Mark was the beloved son of the late Dr. Kenneth and Mardis McKenzie (Kimball). He spent twenty-six meaningful years as a resident of North Platte, Nebraska, a community that became not only his home but also a place where his life’s work, relationships, and values shone brightly.
Mark’s legacy is lovingly carried forward by his devoted wife of over 44 years, Francine (Peniska) McKenzie, whom he married on November 28, 1981. Throughout their many years together, Francine and Mark built a close-knit family grounded in love, respect, and enduring support. Mark is also survived by his children: Jacob (Jenny) McKenzie, John McKenzie, and Madeline (Jai) McKenzie, who each carry forward his lessons, warmth, and unwavering encouragement.
To his family, Mark was a pillar of strength and wisdom. His integrity and compassion provided an ever-present source of reassurance. He sought to instill the importance of curiosity, kindness, and resilience in his children, sharing with them not just his knowledge but his immense zest for life. Mark’s gentle humor and thoughtful nature made him deeply cherished by his family and all who knew him.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Kenneth McKenzie; his mother, Mardis McKenzie (Kimball); and his brother, Dr. David McKenzie and sister, Dr. Jacquelyn McKenzie. Their memory remained close to his heart throughout his life. Mark also leaves behind and will be missed by his sister, Kim (Lynn) Wipf, brothers; Kenneth McKenzie (Denise) and Dr. Matt McKenzie, uncle, Jack Raymond, aunt, Carolyn Moore, sister in-laws; Janis McKenzie, Mollie (Tom) Blue Raven, Vaughnelle Peniska, JoBea (Danny) Seyller, brother in-laws; Thornton Rave and Jack Peniska and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Throughout his professional journey, Mark touched countless lives with his intellect and dedication. His contributions as a physician were marked by his empathy and commitment to patient care. Whether guiding patients through difficult times or mentoring new generations in his field, he stood out for his compassion, warmth, and unwavering professionalism.
In his decades spent in North Platte, Mark became an integral part of the community. He will be remembered not only for his professional excellence but also for his friendly spirit, willingness to help others, and ability to see goodness in all those he met.
A visitation honoring Mark’s life will be held at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, 1616 W B St, North Platte, NE 69101, on July 31, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Family will greet visitors from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives Mark touched are welcome to pay their respects.
A funeral service will take place at First Methodist Church, 1600 West E, North Platte, NE 69101, on August 1, 2026, beginning at 10:30 a.m. and concluding at 11:30 a.m. The family invites attendees to honor Mark’s joyful spirit by wearing brightly colored attire or Hawaiian shirts, as a celebration of the vibrant life he lived.
Mark Kimball McKenzie’s memory endures through the love of his family, the gratitude of those he helped, and the community he served so faithfully. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
