Norma Mayer (1938-2024)

Norma Jean (Shunk) Mayer, 86, of Grant, passed away on July 15, 2024, in Omaha, Nebraska.

Norma was born on March 5, 1938, in Shelby, NE, to Lester and Miriam (Kruse) Shunk.

Norma grew up in the Rising City and Columbus, Nebraska area and attended schools in Rising City and Columbus. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1955 and subsequently worked in the Platte County Treasurer's office in Columbus.

In September of 1956, Norma moved to Julesburg, Colorado, where she worked as a legal secretary.

Norma married Royston Mayer of Grant on September 1, 1957, and two children, Mikel and Monica, were born to this union.

Norma worked part-time as a legal secretary. When Mikel and Monica started school, she went to work at the K-8 public school in Grant as the school secretary and bookkeeper. Norma retired after 36 years at the school. She took the school census for 53 years and was a Board member of ESU #16 for 16 years.

Norma was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grant. She was a member of Ladies Aid and served on the Church Council.

Norma loved traveling, going to the sports events of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading and taking long walks.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband Royston, parents, grandparents, two sisters, and long-time friend Vince Lee.

She is survived by her children, Mikel (Donna) Mayer and Monica (Kevin) Poppe all of Grant; grandchildren, Molly Mayer, Drew (Caitlin) Mayer, Brad (Shelby) Mayer, Lauren (Jeremy) Klima, Adrianne Poppe; 6 great-grandchildren: Paisley, Callum, Brynn, Wells Mayer, Elle, Isla Klima; brother, Tom (Julee) Shunk; sister Gaylene Thelen, along with cousins, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.

A memorial has been established in Norma's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com. Services will be streamed live at ziongrant.org.

Services will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024, at 10:30 am at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grant, with Pastor Michael Heckmann officiating. Inurnment will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Grant.
