Gene K. Lunkwitz was born on September 16, 1943 in North Platte, Nebraska to Joney and Mildred Lunkwitz. Gene departed this world on April 16, 2025 with family by his side. Gene was the youngest of 5 children: Lawrence, Floyd, Dorothy and Sonja.

Gene met the love of his life, Lois Carlson, in North Platte in January of 1962. They fell in love immediately that day. But they wouldn’t see each other again for another year. They started dating in 1963 and were married later that year. They had 4 children from their union. The first of the children were twins. The oldest is Gaylene Lunkwitz, then came Jenene (Howard) Schrader, next came Cherylene Lunkwitz, and finally their son Leonard (Lucrecia) Lunkwitz. Gene’s greatest pride and joy in life was his wife, 4 kids, 12 grandkids, and 30 great-grandkids, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Dad’s favorite day would be April Fool’s Day. He treated every day the same. He loved to tease and joke with everyone.

Gene was a hard worker for his family. He drove a truck for IML for years. He also worked for Paxton Feed and Fertilizer for many years. Gene joined the U.S. National Guard in 1963 for a few years. Gene was an animal lover. He loved horses, he had a horse named Pete that he had a special bond to. He had many dogs that were always by his side. For a time, he did break horses and his kids to ride horses. Gene Loved to go hunting with family and his love, Lois.

After retirement, Gene loved to sit outside with Lois and family. Lots of deer and rabbits would come up to the house.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Lois (2023), his daughter Jenene (2022), and son-in-law Howard Schrader (2024). His life with Lois was so special to him. They loved each other so much.

Cremation was chosen and a celebration of life will take place Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Methodist Church in Paxton, Nebraska. There will be gathering immediately following services at the Windy Gap in Paxton.
