The Ogallala YMCA has adjusted its operating hours for the fall and is asking the community for help keeping its after-school program stocked with snacks.
YMCA hours Monday through Thursday are now 5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m., closing for an hour before reopening at 8 a.m. The facility will remain open until 6 p.m. Those hours are 5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.
Saturday and Sunday hours are noon to 5 p.m.
Shelby Borer with the Ogallala YMCA said the changes are largely due to staffing. Many of the YMCA's lifeguards are high school students who also have sports and other activities.
The YMCA is currently looking for part-time lifeguards who are 18 or older and not in high school.
The after-school program at Prairie View School is also underway, with approximately 60 children enrolled from pre-K through fifth grade.
Borer said the program has expanded its curriculum this year, with an increased focus on STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — along with art, outdoor activities and time for students to work on their schoolwork.
The YMCA is looking for additional helpers, including high school students, to assist in the classrooms and provide more one-on-one help for students.
The organization is also asking for snack donations for the after-school program.
Borer said the YMCA is looking for a variety of food options to give children something to eat after school. Donations can be dropped off at the YMCA office.
The YMCA is asking that donated snacks not contain peanut butter.
Several fall activities are also underway or coming up.
The YMCA's Daddy Daughter Dance has been rescheduled for October 17 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the YMCA gym. Tickets are currently on sale at the YMCA office.
Flag football is also getting started, with games beginning September 20 at West Park. Registration is closed, but community members are invited to come watch the games on Sunday afternoons.
The YMCA's Rug Rats program has also returned for the school year. The program has changed its schedule this year and will take place at the Ogallala Public Library on the first Tuesday of each month following story time. YMCA staff will lead children through physical activities, stretching and games.
