Keith County Commissioners continue to focus on infrastructure, budgeting and community projects following their latest meetings, according to an update from Commissioner Lane Anderson.

Several commissioners recently traveled to Lincoln for Nebraska Association of County Officials Commissioners Day, where they toured the Capitol and observed the Legislature in session. Anderson said the experience provided valuable insight.

“They had a good time and got to see some interesting facts,” Anderson said.

Back in Keith County, commissioners are entering a busy season centered on training and preparation. Anderson noted that officials are attending seminars and working through annual responsibilities, including reviewing utility costs and taking bids.

Road work remains a key priority, particularly a long-running project north of Paxton. The effort has been underway for years and presents challenges due to the sandy terrain.

“It’s a real challenge trying to build roads in sand, but we’re up there tackling that right now,” Anderson said.

During the most recent meeting, commissioners also heard updates from the Ambulance Fund, including expenses tied to ongoing fire response efforts across the county.

The county is also seeing some staffing changes. Maintenance Supervisor Chris Marlton, who served for five years, has moved on to another position. Officials thanked him for his service and are now advertising to fill the role.

Facility improvements were also highlighted, including a new roof and updated fascia on the county building. The exterior now features black fascia and stainless steel lettering, giving it a refreshed appearance.

Looking ahead, the county is preparing for events tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary, with local committees already working on plans.

Commissioners are also discussing a way to honor Ogallala native Travis Ford, a helicopter pilot killed in Iraq more than two decades ago, with a memorial event expected in the future.

On the financial side, the county is awaiting final budget figures from last year while beginning preparations for the upcoming budget cycle. Anderson said budget season is quickly approaching.

“We’re getting close to entering budget season,” he said.

The Prairie Theater renovation project was also discussed, as organizers pursue a Community Development Block Grant through the state. If awarded, the county would help administer the funds.

Residents were also reminded that early voting at the Keith County Clerk’s Office begins April 13.

In addition, county officials issued guidance for those rebuilding after recent fires. While agricultural structures do not require a fee, permits and inspections are still required to ensure buildings meet code.

Anderson said commissioners will continue balancing day-to-day operations with long-term planning — while hoping for much-needed moisture.

“We’re just going to meetings and praying for rain,” he said.
