Horseback riders will have a chance to explore Ash Hollow State Historical Park while supporting two local organizations during the 4th Annual Ash Hollow Horseback Poker Ride September 19.

The event, hosted by the Velvet Spurs Riding Club, is designed to give riders a chance to experience the trails and history of Ash Hollow while raising money that benefits both the riding club and Friends of Ash Hollow.

Riders will travel through the park, making stops along the way at scenic viewpoints and historical sites. At each stop, participants will collect a card, building a poker hand throughout the ride.

Once riders return, everyone will gather for a potluck meal and the poker hands will be checked. There will be prizes for the top three hands, along with a little incentive for those who don't have the best luck.

A handmade headstall with a trophy buckle will be awarded to both the best and worst poker hands.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. MDT, with the ride getting underway at 10 a.m. The cost is $20 per person or $5 for extra cards.

The event also includes a potluck following the ride, with participants asked to bring finger foods or desserts. Tableware will be provided.

For the Velvet Spurs Riding Club, the event provides an opportunity to bring area riders together and raise funds for the club's activities. Proceeds also benefit Friends of Ash Hollow, helping support efforts connected to the historic park and the preservation and promotion of the area's history.

Organizers say the ride is a chance to enjoy the park from a different perspective while supporting organizations invested in keeping the area active and accessible for the community.

Because Nebraska weather can make trail conditions unpredictable, organizers have set September 26 as a rain date if the trails are inaccessible on September 19. Updates will be posted on the event's Facebook page and the Velvet Spurs Riding Club Facebook page.

Park entry permits are required for riders participating in the event. Those planning to attend can contact Kat Tedder at (510) 658-5077 to RSVP and get additional information about the ride and park permits.

The Ash Hollow Horseback Poker Ride will take place at Ash Hollow State Historical Park near Lewellen on September 19.
