Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department
County wide tones for ditch fire spreading into unharvested corn field in the Ogallala district. Resources included Command from Ogallala and KL. Brush trucks and tenders from all four agencies along with LEO for traffic control responded. KCEM Kling and MAC 60 responded with FLIR drone. Private farm equipment requested to create fire line.
Center pivot utilized to halt forward progress of fire. MA requested from Grant due to minor equipment problems with two Keith county units. Structures threatened but not damaged. No injuries reported to IC. Approximately 50 acres of standing corn destroyed.
The photo is at the point of origin from a poorly maintained semi trailer, west bound on 80. These duals separated from the trailer, crossed the east bound, miraculously not hitting anyone or anything, and the hot metal ignited the ditch and corn field. Semi continued traveling and has not been identified at this time. All units returned to service by 1700 hrs.
