LINCOLN, Neb. — Daniel Losinger, the Lincoln County man serving a 60-years-to-life prison sentence for the 2001 murder of Vicki Soto, died Sunday while in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.
Losinger, 74, died at the Reception and Treatment Center in Lincoln, according to an official Nebraska Department of Correctional Services release. He had been receiving treatment for a medical condition, although the cause of death has not yet been determined.
Losinger's sentence began on Oct. 27, 2003. He was serving consecutive sentences of 50 years to life for second-degree murder and 10 to 20 years for use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony.
According to the Nebraska Supreme Court's opinion in State v. Losinger, the case stemmed from the Dec. 2, 2001, killing of Vicki Soto in North Platte. Soto was eight-and-a-half months pregnant at the time of her death. Losinger was originally charged with first-degree murder before entering a no-contest plea to second-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. The Nebraska Supreme Court later upheld his sentences.
As is standard procedure when an inmate dies in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, a grand jury investigation will be conducted.
