Mullen, NE – The 2026 Sandhills Ranch Internship season has kicked off, bringing together a new cohort of interns eager to step into ranch life. Participants gathered for the annual orientation, a tradition that lays the groundwork for their summer experiences on ranches across the Nebraska Sandhills.

Over the next three months, these interns will live and work on ranches throughout the Nebraska Sandhills. The Sandhills Ranch Internships are paid, summer-long, position which includes room and partial board. The interns have the opportunity to attend an educational workshop of their choosing.

This year’s orientation connected individuals from various backgrounds who share a commitment to learning through hands-on ranching experiences. Executive Director Shelly Kelly opened the event with insights into the Sandhills Task Force, elaborating on its history and mission.

The day covered essential topics such as ranch safety, communication, conflict, and networking. Participants benefited from the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training, gaining vital knowledge for cattle care and becoming BQA certified.

Highlights of the event were a panel discussion featuring former Sandhills Ranch interns, who shared personal stories and offered valuable advice. Guest speaker Jessica Rodman discussed her journey from intern to mentor and educator, emphasizing the significant impact that internships and mentorship have in the industry. She also covered essential safety and handling practices for cattle and horses.

In a new development, the Sandhills Task Force introduced the Ranch Apprenticeship Program. Two apprentices who began their placements earlier this year joined the orientation alongside summer interns. Additionally, three participants from other internship programs attended, building connections across the ranching community.

Programs like the Sandhills Ranch Internship and Apprenticeship Program play an important role in developing the next generation while strengthening relationships between ranchers, communities, and people eager to learn. Through mentorship, hands-on experiences, and community support, these opportunities help preserve the values and traditions that make the Nebraska Sandhills unique.

If you see one of these interns or apprentices in your community this summer, take a moment to introduce yourself and make them feel welcome. Your support is invaluable and greatly appreciated. Whether it is advice on where to eat, community events, or just a friendly chat.

Stay tuned as we share stories and experiences from the 2026 internship and apprenticeship season!
