Omaha, Neb. -- Sophomore Ayden Kokoszka delivered another highlight reel goal late in the match as #4 Creighton Men's Soccer defeated intracity rival Omaha 4-2 on Tuesday, September 29. The win lifted the Bluejays to 10-0-2 on the season, while Omaha fell to 4-3-3.
Early in the contest it appeared that Creighton was going to ease to victory. The Bluejays surged ahead with goals in the 22nd and 28th minutes to grab a 2-0 edge. Junior Angel Lopez gave the Jays the lead at 21:28 by taking a pass from freshman Jordan Igwenma along the right side, then beating a defender to blast in his seventh goal of the season.
Moments later senior Matthew Reed finished a pass from Kokoszka, slicing a shot past Omaha goalkeeper Karny Ndione with 27:23 on the clock.
Omaha responded with goals in the 39th (38:29) and 44th (43:40) minutes as Maguire Perkins slid in goal after Creighton goalkeeper Amari Thompson dove for a stop of a shot by Italo Jenkins. The equalizer came on a corner as Brett Perkins flipped an insertion from Jeppe Runge with his head.
Creighton's offense remained locked up into the 80th minute, but Kokoszka provided the key. The Massachusetts native held the ball just inside the box on the left side, spun and fired a shot into the upper right corner to put Creighton back in front at 79:29.
Finally, Igwenma provided insurance in the 86th minute (85:59) by gathering his first shot to put a bow on the win.
This match was a fight pure and simple as a total of 11 Yellow Cards were issued (seven to Creighton and four to Omaha), while the Bluejays were called for a season-high 21 fouls.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Friday, October 2 in Morrison Stadium against St. John's at 7:30 pm.
