Man Dies While in Custody at Red Willow County Detention Center

McCOOK, Neb. — Authorities are investigating the death of a man who died while in custody at the Red Willow County Detention Center.

According to the Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office, Blaine Allen Frerichs died while being held at the detention center. The incident occurred on Wednesday, Jan. 14.

The Nebraska State Patrol has been called in to conduct an independent investigation. The sheriff’s office reported that McCook Fire Department paramedics and the McCook Police Department initially assisted at the scene.

Officials said that, at this early stage of the investigation, there is no indication of trauma, either self-inflicted or otherwise. An autopsy has been ordered by Red Willow County Attorney Paul Wood to determine the cause of death. Authorities said they are awaiting the results.

The Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to Frerichs’ family and friends.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released once it becomes available.
