North Platte, Neb. – The North Platte Community College women's basketball team earned its first win of the season with a commanding 74-22 victory over York University JV.
Madison Thomas and Madisyn Honeycutt led the Knights offensively, recording 14 points each, while Dorthie Mesteth contributed a team-high 10 rebounds.
“It’s always nice to get our first win of the year, especially at home,” head coach Jeff Thurman said. “I’m proud of our effort and attention to detail on the defensive end in the second and third quarters.”
The teams traded baskets early in the first quarter before the Knights gained momentum with a nine-point run, sparked by Melina Parkinson’s basket near the rim, to take a seven-point lead.
The Knights dominated the second quarter, holding the Panthers scoreless while pouring in 31 points of their own to take a commanding lead into halftime.
North Platte continued to pull away in the third quarter, outscoring York University JV 12-3 to extend its lead to 47 points heading into the final period. The Knights maintained their advantage through the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
“Overall, it was a solid team win, and now we have to prepare for two really good teams this weekend,” Thurman said.
Knights (1-1) return to action on Friday against Eastern Wyoming College. Tip is set for 6 p.m. in Torrington, Wyo.
