North Platte, Neb.&nbsp; – North Platte Community College softball used a total of 24 hits across two games to sweep Fort Hays Tech Northwest on Monday.

The Knights had seven different players notch at least one hit in the opening game of the doubleheader. Victoria Arellano and Heaven Hutchison were the only pair to tally double digit hits in game one.

North Platte got on the board in the first inning after a Sheena Smith double plated Arellano from second. The Knights went on to add three more runs in the bottom half of the second inning. An RBI single by Alieze Moreno plated Byanka Tyan before an Arellano double to center advanced Moreno all the way around the basepaths. The final run of the inning crossed the plate just one batter later on a single down the right field line.

North Platte tacked on an insurance run in the fourth inning when an error by the center fielder allowed Afia Hunt to score.

Smith went all seven innings to claim the win while allowing no runs on just three hits.

The Tigers opened up the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. North Platte answered in the bottom of the frame when a single from Arellano brought Moreno around to score.

North Platte took advantage of the Tiger errors in the third inning, as two errors allowed Moreno to advance to second base to lead off the inning. A grounder back to the pitcher advanced the baserunner before a line out to right field advanced the runner to tie that game up at 2-2.&nbsp;

The offense exploded in the fourth inning as four runs scored on five hits. Tyan reached on an error by the right fielder, before four straight singles tacked on three North Platte runs. A double by Hutchison brought the final run across the plate as North Platte took a 6-2 lead.

Knights continued to stretch their lead in the sixth inning with four more runs to earn their second sweep of the season.

Moreno earned the win after allowing two runs on four hits in six innings of work. She also struck out three and walked two.

Knights (4-12) will travel to McCook to take on the Indians in a doubleheader on Thursday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

The No. 21 Nebraska softball took advantage of six errors to defeat the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 8-2, on Sunday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium.

Five of the Huskers’ eight runs came in the bottom of the third inning, which also consisted of five errors by the Gophers. The Big Red improved to 23-8 on the season with a 4-1 mark in conference competition, while Minnesota fell to 13-18 and 2-5 in Big Ten play.

Kylee Magee (3-2) claimed the win in the circle for Nebraska after allowing no hits in 3.0 scoreless innings. She also notched three strikeouts. Emmerson Cope started for NU and allowed only one run in 2.0 innings. Caitlin Olensky also threw 2.0 innings and allowed just one run on a wind-aided home run.&nbsp;

Ava Bredwell was 3-for-3 on the day at the plate and notched a double and a pair of RBIs. Samantha Bland was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Ava Kuszak added two hits and two RBIs and Hannah and Lauren Camenzind logged a hit apiece.&nbsp;

Minnesota opened up the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the first and a home run in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead.

NU took advantage of Gopher errors to notch a five-run third inning. Abbie Squier got on base on a fielder’s choice and advanced to third on two errors, which also sent Kacie Hoffmann to second. Lauren Camenzind reached on another error, Hoffmann advanced to third and Squier crossed the plate. L. Camenzind stole second and she and Hoffmann scored on a Bredwell double. Bland singled to send Bredwell to the plate. Bella Bacon reached on the final error of the inning and Bland went to third, and a Kuszak single scored the two as the Huskers took a 5-2 lead.&nbsp;

The Big Red stretched the lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth, kicked off by a L. Camenind single. Bredwell followed her with another single, which advanced L. Camenzind to third. Bland got to first on a fielder’s choice, Bredwell was out at second and L. Camenzind scored. Bacon reached on a fielder’s choice and Bland went to third on a Minnesota error. Kuszak singled to score Bland, and a Bahl ground out sent Bacon home.&nbsp;

Huskers leverage Gopher errors, lock up series sweep

Nebraska fell 7-1 to USC in the rubber match of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Great Park in Irvine, Calif.

Nebraska (10-13, 2-7 Big Ten) scored one run on seven hits and two errors, while USC (14-9, 4-5 Big Ten) totaled seven runs and 11 hits.

Case Sanderson and Dylan Carey led the Big Red at the plate with two hits apiece. Gabe Swansen recorded a double, while Robby Bolin and Will Jesske had one hit each.

Jackson Brockett fell to 0-2 on the season after surrendering four runs, two earned, on six hits and a walk across 3.2 innings. Gavin Blachowicz allowed two runs on three hits across 1.1 innings of work, while Pryce Bender tossed two frames, giving up one run on two hits. Jalen Worthley worked a scoreless eighth inning to conclude the action for the NU pitching staff.

The Trojans scored runs in the first two innings to jump out front 2-0. A misread fly ball fell for a one-out double in the bottom of the first, before an RBI single through the right side broke the scoreless tie.

A one-out single, followed by a fielder’s choice, had a runner on first with two outs for USC in the bottom of the second. The lead doubled to two for the Trojans with an RBI double down the left-field line.

USC capitalized on a one-out throwing error from the Huskers to grow the lead to four in the bottom of the third. A single through the left side and a groundout to first placed runners on and second and third with two outs, setting the table for Richard Tejeda’s two-RBI single to the right-center gap that gave the Trojans a 4-0 advantage.

The NU offense threatened in the top of the fifth when singles by Jesske and Sanderson had runners on first and third with two outs, but the Big Red couldn’t plate their first run and cut into the deficit.

Back-to-back solo homers over the left-field fence to open the bottom of the sixth extended the Trojans’ lead to six, while a one-out solo homer in the bottom of the seventh had USC out front 7-0 through seven innings.

The Huskers plated their lone run of the afternoon in the top of the eighth inning. Riley Silva was plunked to begin the frame, and Sanderson singled through the right side to put runners on first and third with no outs.

Brumbaugh lifted an 0-1 pitch to center field for a sacrifice fly, allowing Silva to come home from third and make it a 7-1 game.

The Big Red had runners on second and third with no outs in the ninth after consecutive hits from Carey and Swansen, but the next three Huskers were retired in order to preserve USC’s 7-1 win on Sunday.

Nebraska travels to Manhattan, Kan., for a midweek matchup at Kansas State on Tuesday, March 25. First pitch between the Huskers and Wildcats is set for 6 p.m. at Tointon Family Stadium on ESPN+.

The Supernovas come off one of the most impressive weekends in franchise history, pulling off their second-ever reverse over Indy on March 13 before beating the Orlando Valkyries for the first time in 2025 with a four-set win on March 15. Indy hopes to earn its first-ever win over Omaha after being reversed swept by the Supernovas last week at the Fishers Event Center. Supernovas outside hitter&nbsp;Brooke Nuneviller&nbsp;eclipsed the 500-kill mark in her Supernovas career on 3/13 at Indy and now sits with a total of 529 kills in her two seasons with Omaha. With 18 digs on Saturday versus the Valkyries, she became the first player in PVF history to achieve 500 kills and 500 digs. Setter Natalia Valentín-Anderson also reached a milestone against Indy, recording her 1,000th career assist with the franchise. Her Omaha career total stands at 1,003. Middle blocker Kaitlyn Hord is three blocks away from becoming the third player in PVF history to record 100 stuffs. She recorded 42 blocks in 72 sets last season in Columbus.&nbsp;

The Supernovas have the biggest home court advantage in pro volleyball, but they've also been mighty on the road. That includes the league's best road record at 8-2. Omaha and Orlando (4-3) are the only teams in the PVF to have a road record at .500 or above. The Supernovas have won six-straight road matches including four straight overall which are both franchise records.&nbsp;

Omaha middle blocker&nbsp;Kaitlyn Hord&nbsp;has been the premier blocker in the PVF so far in the 2025 season. The former Husker and Nittany Lion leads the league in both total blocks (55) and blocks per set with a 0.96 mark. Hord's seven blocks in the five-set win over the Atlanta Vibe on opening night set a Supernovas single-match record. She is also one of five players in the PVF to record seven or more blocks in a match this season. The Kentucky native also sits third in hitting percentage with a .341 clip through 173 attacks with 69 kills and only 10 errors, which is fewest among middle blockers.&nbsp;

With 18 digs on Saturday versus the Valkyries, she became the first player in PVF history to achieve 500 kills and 500 digs. Setter Natalia Valentín-Anderson also reached a milestone against Indy, recording her 1,000th career assist with the franchise. Her Omaha career total stands at 1,003. Middle blocker Kaitlyn Hord is three blocks away from becoming the third player in PVF history to record 100 stuffs. Her 31 digs against Atlanta in the season opener broke a single-match franchise record. Ogallala, Ne - There will be new leadership in the Ogallala Public Schools boys basketball program in 2025. Andy Gillen steps down after seven remarkable years, handing the reins to Ogallala graduate and former player Carter Brown—his oldest son.

Coach Andy Gillen has been the architect of an extraordinary era for Ogallala boys basketball since taking over seven years ago. Under his leadership, the team compiled an impressive 116-24 record, cementing its status as a juggernaut in Nebraska high school sports. Gillen’s tenure included six Southwest Conference (SWC) Coach of the Year awards, six state tournament qualifications, seven regular-season SWC championships, and six SWC tournament titles. His teams also achieved notable postseason success, securing third place in Class C1 in 2019 and 2023, and finishing as state runner-up in 2020. Gillen’s strategic brilliance and relentless drive turned Ogallala into a perennial contender, leaving a legacy of excellence.

PHILADELPHIA - The Nebraska wrestling team ends day one of the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships second in team standings, with 28 points. The Big Red sent five Huskers to the quarterfinals, while all nine qualifiers continue tournament action on Friday, March 21.&nbsp;

In front of over 18,000 fans at both sessions, No. 1 Brock Hardy (141), No. 2 Ridge Lovett (149), No. 3 Antrell Taylor (157), No. 12 Christopher Minto (165) and No. 12 Silas Allred (184), are headed to the NCAA quarterfinals after their 2-0 first day efforts.

The tournament began bouts at the Wells Fargo Center at 125, No. 9 Caleb Smith up first on the mat for the Big Red. The four-time NCAA qualifier faced No. 24 Nick Babin (PITT), and the pair went scoreless through three periods. With :03 left in SV-1, Smith struck with a takedown, starting his 2025 tournament campaign with a win.

At 133, No. 17 Jacob Van Dee met No. 16 Ryan Miller (PENN) in the first round. Van Dee had a 4-1 lead heading into the second period, but Miller rallied and came back for an 8-4 win. No. 1 Hardy’s round one bout took on No. 32 Nash Singleton (ORST), and the 141 lb Husker notched bonus points for NU. Hardy used three takedowns, two escapes and the ridetime point to win with a 12-3 major decision, his eighth of the year.

At 149, No. 2 Lovett and No. 31 Sam Cartella (NW) were both on the board early, as Lovett led 5-4 after the first period. The pair got tied up at 8-8 to start period three, and Lovett secured the 10-8 win with a reversal. No. 3 Taylor faced No. 30 James Conway (MIZZ) at 157 and the Husker was quick to score. Taylor kept striking for 6-1 and 12-3 leads after periods one and two respectively. The sophomore notched a 19-4 (5:55) tech. fall, his seventh of the season, to claim his spot in the round of 16.

In his NCAA Tournament debut, No. 12 Minto met No. 21 Joey Bianchi (UALR) on the mat at 165. The two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week stumped Bianchi, grabbing his fifth major decision in the 13-1 victory. At 174, No. 8 Lenny Pinto took on No. 25 Dalton Harkins (ARMY), and fought to score. The Husker closed the bout at 11-1 to claim a major decision over top-five Ramirez, and his spot in the quarterfinals. The win was also Minto’s 15th bonus-point victory of the season, and third over a top-10 opponent. In the 174 wrestleback bracket, No. 8 Pinto took on No. 9 Carson Kharchla (OHST). The Buckeye grabbed an early lead, but Pinto fought back to send the bout to SV-1 at 7-7. The junior struck a five-point sequence to claim the top-10 matchup, 11-7.

Huskers second after day one, send five to Quarters

Nebraska rifle athletes Emma Rhode and Maddy Moyer earned All-American honors from the College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) on Thursday.&nbsp;

Rhode was named a first-team all-American in aggregate and in smallbore, while earning honorable-mention honors in the air rifle.&nbsp;

Moyer, who competed in the NCAA Championships and took 37th place in the smallbore, earned honorable-mention accolades in smallbore.&nbsp;

“It’s a great honor to be named an All-American athlete, and it’s a reflection of the hard work and dedication given by both Emma and Maddy this season,” Head Coach Richard Clark said. “I could not be more proud of the way these girls worked and represented Nebraska on the firing line throughout the season, capping it off with NCAA appearances for both. I am extremely excited to watch these two push the ceiling higher for our program with their continued efforts next season!”&nbsp;

Moyer posted an average of 584.07 in the smallbore, the second-highest mark on the team. She grabbed four second place and two third-place finishes throughout the season. She shot a season high of 591 against UTEP on Nov. 10.&nbsp;

Rhode’s junior season featured nine first-place finishes in both smallbore and aggregate, while adding three first-place finishes in the air rifle.

Rhode averaged 591 in the smallbore, 595.08 air rifle and 1,186.08 in the aggregate. Her averages led the team in all three disciplines. Her aggregate score of 1,193 at the Withrow Invitational and at Army broke the school record, previously held by Cecelia Ossi, who shot a score of 1,191 during the 2022-23 season.

Joplin, Mo. – A long first quarter run helped Illinois Central earn the 82-67 win over North Platte in the consolation bracket of the NJCAA DII Women’s National Championship on Wednesday.

Jada Thompson&nbsp;led the Knights with 22 points and five rebounds, while Nariah Golden chipped in 13 points. EmmaJo Locks rounded out the Knights double-digit scorers with 12 points and six assists.

"We battled against a very good Illinois Central team," said head coach Jeff Thurman. "We just didn’t make enough plays on both ends to win."

A 12-2 run midway through the first quarter helped the Cougars build a 17-6 lead. A Madison Cheleen three halted the rally, but the Knights faced a ten-point deficit at the quarter break.

Illinois Central continued to extend their lead as a jumper from Madison Jobe pushed their lead to 46-23 with 3:01 remaining. Nariah Golden found a crease in the Cougars defense to trigger a 7-0 run over the closing minutes to cut the margin to 46-30 at the halftime break.

Illinois Central outscored the Knights 11-5 in the opening five minutes to stretch their lead to 57-35 on a three by Kamryn Heider. Knights chipped away at the deficit with a 6-0 burst, before the Cougars stretched their lead to 67-47 headed into the final ten minutes.

A 15-4 run to open the fourth quarter helped North Platte close the gap to nine points on a layup by Nariah Golden with 4:31 to play. The Cougars limited the Knights to just one more field goal down the stretch, while connecting on 5-of-6 free throws to close out the game.

Knights season ends with loss to Illinois Central

Rudy Sautron posted his fourth individual top-10 finish of the season, tying for eighth with a 139 (-1) at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island in St. Simons Island, Ga., on Tuesday.

Sautron, a sophomore from Reunion Island, France, closed the weather-shortened 36-hole tournament with a final-round 69 (-1) on the 6,933-yard layout of the Sea Island Resort on Tuesday, including an eagle on the par-five 583-yard seventh hole. High winds were strong enough to halt play on Monday, but Sautron still managed an even-par 70 in a single round.

Brody Cunningham added a top-15 finish of his own with a two-round total of 141 (+1), including an even-par 70 on Monday, before adding a 71 (+1) on Tuesday. The true freshman from Glasgow, Scotland tied for 13th in an 80-player field.

As a team, Nebraska tied for fifth with Kansas at 564 (+4), just five strokes behind the tournament champions from Cincinnati, which finished at 559 (-1). Marquette and Florida Gulf Coast tied for second at even-par 560, while UNC Greensboro took fourth at 562 (+2).

The Huskers finished ahead of Big Ten foes Michigan State (566), Rutgers (572) and Penn State (580) in the 13-team tournament field.

Gunnar Broin from Kansas captured medalist honors with a 132 (-8) that included a final-round 64 (-6). Broin finished one shot ahead of Noah Kumar from Rutgers at 133 (-7). Marquette's Max Lyons took third at 134 (-6).

Evan McDermott put together Nebraska's No. 3 individual finish by tying for 31st at 143 (+3), including an even-par 70 on Tuesday. The redshirt sophomore from Spring Lake, Michigan opened with a 73 (+3).

Hamish Murray and Reed Malleck completed Nebraska's five-player lineup in a tie for 38th at 144 (+4). Malleck, a graduate student from York, Neb., opened with an even-par 70, before closing the tournament with a 74 (+4) Tuesday. Murray, a senior from Sydney, Australia, produced a 71 (+1) Tuesday after opening with a 73 (+3).

Grant Jabenis rounded out the Husker contingent at The Johnnie-O in a tie for 68th at 151 (+11), including a final-round 73 (+3) while playing as an individual outside Nebraska's lineup. The senior from Omaha opened the tournament with a 78 (+8).

Story by NU Athletic Communications&nbsp;Rudy Sautron posted his fourth individual top-10 finish of the season, tying for eighth with a 139 (-1) at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island in St. Simons Island, Ga., on Tuesday.Sautron, a sophomore from Reunion Island, France, closed the weather-shortened 36-hole tournament with a final-round 69 (-1) on the 6,933-yard layout of the Sea Island Resort on Tuesday, including an eagle on the par-five 583-yard seventh hole. High winds were strong enough to halt play on Monday, but Sautron still managed an even-par 70 in a single round.Brody Cunningham added a top-15 finish of his own with a two-round total of 141 (+1), including an even-par 70 on Monday, before adding a 71 (+1) on Tuesday. The true freshman from Glasgow, Scotland tied for 13th in an 80-player field.As a team, Nebraska tied for fifth with Kansas at 564 (+4), just five strokes behind the tournament champions from Cincinnati, which finished at 559 (-1). Marquette and Florida Gulf Coast tied for second at even-par 560, while UNC Greensboro took fourth at 562 (+2).The Huskers finished ahead of Big Ten foes Michigan State (566), Rutgers (572) and Penn State (580) in the 13-team tournament field.Gunnar Broin from Kansas captured medalist honors with a 132 (-8) that included a final-round 64 (-6). Broin finished one shot ahead of Noah Kumar from Rutgers at 133 (-7). Marquette's Max Lyons took third at 134 (-6).Evan McDermott put together Nebraska's No. 3 individual finish by tying for 31st at 143 (+3), including an even-par 70 on Tuesday. Sautron leads Huskers to Top-Five finish at Johnnie-O

Joplin, Mo. – No. 4 Johnson County defeated North Platte in the second round of the NJCAA DII Women's National Championship on Tuesday, 53-42.

EmmaJo Locks led the Knights with 11 points, while Nariah Golden chipped in 10 points and three steals.

"We battled all game against a very good Johnson County team," said head coach Jeff Thurman. "The second quarter really hurt us both offensively and defensively."

Three players joined in the scoring frenzy while the Knights jumped out to a 6-3 lead. Tamia Smith connected on the first Cavalier three to tie the game at 6-6 with 3:29 to play.

Johnson County stretched a 7-3 run into the second quarter, before a Dezirae Gonzales baseline jumper cut the deficit to 13-11. The Cavaliers showcased their offensive ability using a 16-2 run over the final seven minutes to take a 29-13 lead into the halftime break.

Knights continued to fight as a 12-2 rally capped off by a Nariah Golden three cut the deficit to 35-27 with 3:18 to play in the third. Kara Stricklin answered with back-to-back threes to stretch the Cavalier lead back into double digits, where it would stay for the remainder of the second half.

“We will regroup tonight and focus on what we have to do tomorrow against a very good Illinois Central team," Thurman said.

North Platte (21-13) will continue play in the consolation bracket on Wednesday against the Cougars of Illinois Central. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. with local broadcast coverage on FM 98.1/AM 1410 in North Platte. A stream of the game is also available on the NJCAA Network.

Knights fall in second round to #4 Johnson County

Kearney, Neb. –&nbsp;Sophomore&nbsp;Daniella Morillas(pronounced Dan-kneel-uh&nbsp; Mor-ill-us)&nbsp;tossed a two-hit complete game shutout in game one and Nebraska Kearney scored runs in four consecutive innings in game two to take a double header from Mary,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://lopers.com/sports/softball/stats/2025/mary/boxscore/8285">8-0</a>&nbsp;(6 innings) and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://lopers.com/sports/softball/stats/2025/mary/boxscore/8284">7-4,</a>&nbsp;Monday at Dryden Park.

These games capped "13 games in nine days" for the Lopers (15-14). They get two days’ rest before visiting Metro State (21-7) Thursday in Denver.

To start the day, Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) gave up a single, double and walked three as UM (7-18) stranded five. She fanned four in throwing 92 pitches and improves to 3-4. At the plate, UNK finished with eight hits and drew five walks. The Lopers scored in all six innings with senior second baseman&nbsp;Rylyn Nelson&nbsp;(Sterling, Colo.) and sophomore DP&nbsp;Gianna Galli&nbsp;(Stockon, Calif.) each knocking in two with junior shortstop&nbsp;Mary Chvatal&nbsp;(Wahoo) going 2 for 2 with two runs and two walks.

In the night cap, the Marauders bounced back as they scored four-runs with two down in the top of the second. Nine-hole hitter and catcher Katelyn Falk (2 for 3, one run) delivered a two-run single as center fielder Emma Kimberling.

However, UNK struck for three in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth to rally. Starter&nbsp;Madeline Janssen&nbsp;(Earlham, Ia.) struck out five over three innings of work with freshman lefty&nbsp;Jerzie Schindler&nbsp;(Central City) blanking UM for four straight innings to earn her sixth victory. UNK Softball: Lopers Sweep UM

Joplin, Mo. – A 21-point third quarter carried the Knights to a 69-62 win over #13 seeded Schoolcraft College to open the NJCAA DII Women’s National Championship on Monday.

Jada Thompson&nbsp;tallied a career high 28 points and nine rebounds to lead the Knights. Neveah Golden scored 13 points, while Madison Cheleen chipped in 12 points off the bench.

"To be able to make history with this group, I am honored to be a part of this program," said head coach Jeff Thurman. "We can enjoy this accomplishment, but we still have work to do to prepare for a really good Johnson County team tomorrow."

Sharon Smith tallied six of the Ocelots first eight points to double up the Knights with 5:54 remaining in the first quarter. A quick burst tied the game up at 8-8, before three straight points gave the Knights the lead inside the final three minutes.

Sienna McNitt connected on a pair of free throws to halt the momentum, but a 7-2 rally over the next minute pushed the North Platte advantage to 17-12. Schoolcraft shook off the pressure and cut the margin to three at the end of the first quarter.

Despite the Ocelots cutting the margin to one three times in the opening 2:50, the Knights continued to respond on the offensive end. A short 5-0 run, capped off by four straight points from Nevaeh Golden built a 30-24 lead with 3:21 remaining. Schoolcraft closed out the half with four straight points from Mia Wright to narrow the margin to 30-28 at the halftime break.&nbsp;

Out of the break, the Ocelots knotted the game up on a runner by Garyana Overton. A Thompson three gave the Knights back the lead with 8:21 left in the third quarter. The margin stayed tight until a North Platte 9-1 run put the black and gold up 42-33. Knights continued to stretch their lead into the late stages of the quarter, as they built a 51-38 lead headed into the final ten minutes.

A Dezirae Gonzales layup gave the Knights their largest lead of the game, but Schoolcraft would not hang out in the double-digit deficit for long. A 7-1 run cut the margin to six on a layup from Nevaeh Cable with 5:02 remaining. North Platte was able to outlast the Ocelots down the stretch to earn their first win in the national tournament in school history.

Kearney, Neb. –&nbsp;The top-ranked Nebraska Kearney wrestling team scored 115.0 points to win the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.trackwrestling.com/tw/predefinedtournaments/VerifyPassword.jsp?tournamentId=855049132">2025 NCAA Division II National Championship</a>&nbsp;Saturday night in Indianapolis.

The Lopers qualified all 10 starters for the two-day meet with eight ending up as All-Americans (top eight finish). UNK basically wrapped up the team trophy with a strong second session showing Friday night and then greatly padded its point total throughout Saturday's third session.

UNK previously placed first in 2008 (108.50 points), 2012 (107.0), 2013 (108.0) and 2022 (127.0) with this being the program's 23rd consecutive top eight finish. The 52-point margin of victory is the sixth best in the meet's 53-year history with Augustana (63.0) second and St. Cloud State third (57.50).

Sixth-year team member&nbsp;Nick James&nbsp;(149 lbs.), redshirt senior&nbsp;Jacobi Deal&nbsp;(174 lbs.) and redshirt sophomore&nbsp;Zach Ourada&nbsp;(125 lbs.) each reached the finals and finished as National Runners Up. They are the 23rd, 24th and 25th Lopers to finish second at a D2 national meet with James now a two-time runner up.&nbsp;

Ourada (Omaha Skutt) took on top-seed and fellow Omaha native Jakason Burks of Central Missouri in his finals match. Unfortunately, Burks recorded a takedown 12 seconds in and prevailed, 5-2. The story was the same at 174-pounds where Maryville's Cole Ritter moved ahead 3-0 by the 1:58 mark of the opening period. Deal (Durham, N.C.) had several nice attacks throughout but Ritter fought off each one to win, 5-1. 

Finally, James (Kearney H.S.) was seemingly poised to go into overtime against Cael Larson of Augustana. However, Larson managed a takedown and four-near fall points in the final 10 seconds to come out on top, 8-1.&nbsp;

UNK Wrestling: #1 Lopers Score 115 Points to Easily Win 5th National Title

Kearney, Neb. –&nbsp;Freshman&nbsp;Kalli Ulven&nbsp;threw a complete game four-hit shutout and Nebraska Kearney drew 10 walks to beat Minnesota State-Moorhead,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://lopers.com/sports/softball/stats/2025/minnesota-state-moorhead/boxscore/8294">5-0</a>, in game one of a double header Sunday morning in Pittsburg, Kan.

The Dragons (8-19) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and added an unearned run in the eighth to take the night cap,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://lopers.com/sports/softball/stats/2025/minnesota-state-moorhead/boxscore/8295">4-3</a>. The games were part of the MIAA/NSIC Crossover with the Lopers (13-14) going 3-2 in the tournament.

Ulven (Blair) earned her third win by fanning three, walking none and throwing just 76 pitches. UNK gave her all the support she needed with a three-run second and then scored single runs in the third and fourth innings.

Junior shortstop and leadoff hitter&nbsp;Mary Chvatal&nbsp;(Wahoo) walked three times and had a bunt single with junior left fielder&nbsp;Alivia De La Cruz&nbsp;(Chandler, Ariz.) going 1 for 2 with two runs and two walks. Finally, freshman DP&nbsp;Katie Janssen&nbsp;(Earlham, Ia.) had an RBI double.

In game two, Moorhead hit into a 6-3 double play to end the sixth but used a one-out rally to tie things at three in the seventh. An infield single, throwing error, double down the right field line and pinch hit single knotted things up. However, sophomore reliver&nbsp;Daniella Morillas&nbsp;(Newcastle, Calif.) coaxed the Dragons to hit into another double play to get out of the jam and end the inning.

Senior Avery Steffen countered by recording back-to-back strikeouts in a one out, runner on third situation in the top of the eighth. The offense secured her fourth win as a bunt single moved the placed runner to third with an infield error scoring her.&nbsp;

Junior third baseman&nbsp;Alyssa Fortik&nbsp;(Raymond) and senior center fielder&nbsp;Eden McNally&nbsp;(Castle Rock, Colo.) combined to go 4 for 8 with a run and three RBI’s with junior&nbsp;Madeline Janssen&nbsp;(Earlham, Ia.) allowing one earned run over the first 3.1 innings.

UNK’s “13 games in nine days” stretch ends tomorrow with a double header against the Mary (N.D.) Marauders (7-15). The double header has been moved up two hours to a 12 p.m. start.

The games were part of the MIAA/NSIC Crossover with the Lopers (13-14) going 3-2 in the tournament.Ulven (Blair) earned her third win by fanning three, walking none and throwing just 76 pitches. UNK gave her all the support she needed with a three-run second and then scored single runs in the third and fourth innings.Junior shortstop and leadoff hitter&nbsp;Mary Chvatal&nbsp;(Wahoo) walked three times and had a bunt single with junior left fielder&nbsp;Alivia De La Cruz&nbsp;(Chandler, Ariz.) going 1 for 2 with two runs and two walks. Finally, freshman DP&nbsp;Katie Janssen&nbsp;(Earlham, Ia.) had an RBI double.In game two, Moorhead hit into a 6-3 double play to end the sixth but used a one-out rally to tie things at three in the seventh. An infield single, throwing error, double down the right field line and pinch hit single knotted things up. However, sophomore reliver&nbsp;Daniella Morillas&nbsp;(Newcastle, Calif.) coaxed the Dragons to hit into another double play to get out of the jam and end the inning.Senior Avery Steffen countered by recording back-to-back strikeouts in a one out, runner on third situation in the top of the eighth. The offense secured her fourth win as a bunt single moved the placed runner to third with an infield error scoring her.&nbsp;Junior third baseman&nbsp;Alyssa Fortik&nbsp;(Raymond) and senior center fielder&nbsp;Eden McNally&nbsp;(Castle Rock, Colo.) combined to go 4 for 8 with a run and three RBI’s with junior&nbsp;Madeline Janssen&nbsp;(Earlham, Ia.) allowing one earned run over the first 3.1 innings.UNK’s “13 games in nine days” stretch ends tomorrow with a double header against the Mary (N.D.) Marauders (7-15). The double header has been moved up two hours to a 12 p.m. start.

Sullivan Award. Since 1930, the AAU James E. Sullivan Award has been presented to the most exceptional athlete at the collegiate, Olympic, or other similarly elite level in the United States. As well as honoring athletic excellence, the AAU Sullivan award also recognizes the chosen athlete’s character and honors their quality of leadership, citizenship and sportsmanship.Rodriguez advanced from a group of 39 semifinalists and will be present for the 95th AAU Sullivan Award ceremony on April 15 at the New York Athletic Club. The other five finalists are: Trey Augustine (Ice Hockey, Michigan State), Cooper Flagg (Basketball, Duke), Ashton Jeanty (Football, Boise State), Lee Kiefer (Fencing, USA Fencing) and Ilia Malinin (Figure Skating, U.S. Figure Skating).&nbsp;The winner will join a renowned list of recipients. Last year, Caitlin Clark became the first two-time winner of the award. Other prior winners include Michael Phelps, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michelle Kwan, Peyton Manning, Simone Biles, Carl Lewis and Carissa Moore.Rodriguez finished her Husker career in December as a four-time AVCA All-American, a four-time All-Big Ten selection, and a three-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. She was an AVCA National Player of the Year finalist and a Honda Sport Award for Volleyball finalist in 2024, and she became the first-ever libero to be named AVCA Region Player of the Year. Rodriguez is Nebraska's all-time career leader in digs with 1,897. She is also a three-time Academic All-American, including two first-team accolades.&nbsp;Rodriguez joins four other former Huskers who have been AAU Sullivan Award finalists: Kelsey Robinson (2014-15), Mikaela Foecke (2016-17 and 2018-19), Kelly Hunter (2017-18) and Annika Albrecht (2017-18).&nbsp;
