Rose Barry, 92, longtime Grant resident, passed away on June 8, 2024, at the Independence House at Coddington of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Rose was born on February 24, 1932, in Grant, Nebraska, to Christian "Chris" Gengenbach Jr. and Anna Schurr. She was the eighth of nine children. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church on July 10, 1932 and confirmed on June 3, 1945. She attended country school District 76 then went to Perkins County High School, graduating in 1949. She taught at the Sawyer school for one year and was then married to Jack Barry Jr. on April 30, 1950, at the Grant Methodist parsonage.

Jack and Rose lived in Paxton for a little more than a year, returning to Grant, where Jack worked at the Barry Produce Store for a few years. Rose was a stay-at-home mom until 1956, and then she was employed for three years at Goodall Manufacturing in Ogallala. She had an at-home daycare for several years, where she cared for many children before working at the Grant Elementary School as a para, which she did for 24 years. Rose was retired for a few years before working part-time as a librarian at Grant Elementary School for several years.

Over the years, she was a member of the Grant Cemetery Board, the Texas Trail, Pinochle Club, and Lutheran Ladies Aid, and participated in bowling and golfing leagues with Jack. A devoted homemaker, Rose was dedicated to her husband and family. She enjoyed traveling around the country with Jack to visit their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and attend their many events. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing, and cooking. Most recently, Rose had been making her home in Lincoln.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Barry; siblings, Harold Gengenbach, Lillian Logsdon, Arlene Kurkowski, Dorothy Keuten, George Gengenbach, Daniel Gengenbach, and Eleanor Russell.

Survivors include her children, Barbara Barry (Tim Smith) of Danbury, Wisconsin, Patty (Mark) Jones of Lincoln, Mike (Jeannette) Barry of Wayne, Linda (Brian) Kirkpatrick of Plainfield, Illinois, Lana (Jeff) Knupp of Woodbury, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Anita Most of Ogallala; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Services will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Grant with Pastor Michael Heckmann officiating. Interment will follow at Grant Fairview Cemetery.

Randy Beisner, 60, of Paxton, Nebraska sadly left us on June 7, 2024. He was born to Berdell Beisner and Betty Ferguson in Ogallala, Nebraska on May 2, 1964. He attended Republican Valley High School in Indianola, Nebraska. A Nebraska native, Randy has lived in several areas of Nebraska as well as Loveland, Colorado, and Panama City Beach, Florida.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In his younger days, he enjoyed hot rods, motorcycles, off-roading, boating, and being outdoors. As he became a father, he enjoyed spending time with family, camping, and fishing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He has always loved drawing and listening to music, especially the 1960-1970s Billboard Hits and the companionship of animals. He is known for being a hard worker, a loyal friend, and being proud of his children.&nbsp;

He had a talent of being able to fix and build pretty much anything. He worked in several trades including heavy machinery, carpentry, welding, mechanical services, and construction, as well as owning a flooring and tiling business while living in Colorado.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

He recently settled back in Paxton with his brother Lonnie and helped build the Paxton School gym addition and worked at Becker Family Farms.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his mother, Betty, grandparents, and several uncles, aunts, and cousins. &nbsp;He leaves behind his father and stepmother Berdell and Mary Lou Beisner; brothers Lonnie Beisner, Bobby Beisner, and Raymond Beisner; children Shannon Breakiron, Tiffany Beisner, and Alex Beisner; grandchildren Brittney Shafer, Heather Shafer, Sam Renshaw, and Beck Renshaw; first wife Daisy Richardson; Uncle Glen Beisner and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.&nbsp;

His memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. at Draucker Funeral Home Chapel in Ogallala and will be officiated by Rev. Mark Baldwin of The United Methodist Church of Paxton, NE.&nbsp;

At this time there is no plan for inurnment.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Randall R. Beisner (1964-2024)

Ray Harmon Baldwin was born on July 30, 1934,&nbsp;in Imperial, Nebraska to Perry Harmon and Eva Lily (Surber) Baldwin. He attended several different&nbsp;schools during grades 1 through 8 and then completed 4 years at Chase County High School where he graduated in 1952. On August 16,&nbsp;1953,&nbsp;he married Doris Spady and ranched with his grandfather and father until he was drafted into the army in 1956. In 1958, he returned to Chase County to find that the ranch had been sold. He and Doris then moved to Sterling, Colorado where they built a new house and he worked at Phillips 66 and&nbsp;as&nbsp;an appliance dealer. During his 13 years in Sterling,&nbsp;they adopted three beautiful&nbsp;babies,&nbsp;and he&nbsp;participated&nbsp;in a&nbsp;country&nbsp;swing band. In 1972, the family moved to Arvada, Colorado where Ray worked for General Electric and retired&nbsp;after 23 years.&nbsp;In 1995, Ray and Doris moved to Hudson, Colorado where they built a new house&nbsp;with a large building with a woodshop where he spent many hours building many projects for Doris, grandchildren, other family members and friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fishing,&nbsp;camping&nbsp;and traveling in their motorhome was a passion that he and Doris shared. With the loss of his wife on May 19, 2014,&nbsp;life was&nbsp;very different&nbsp;for several years, but&nbsp;the good Lord gave him a second wife, Jennifer Nancy&nbsp;Sciumbato. They got married on January 29, 2018,&nbsp;in Hudson, Colorado.&nbsp;He truly&nbsp;felt he had a blessed life with no regrets. He had many, many&nbsp;wonderful memories and a host of friends, and&nbsp;to&nbsp;all he&nbsp;said,&nbsp;“we’ll see&nbsp;ya&nbsp;over there”.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ray passed away on Friday, June 7, 2024,&nbsp;at his home in Hudson. Ray was 89 years old.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Vernette (Glidden) McMillan, 81, of Milburn, NE, passed away on June 6, 2024, at Kearney Regional Hospital. Born August 26, 1942, in Dunning, Nebraska, she was the first child of Verne and Betty Glidden. Vernette grew up in a close-knit family where togetherness was a way of life, filled with holiday dinners and weekend hunting and fishing trips. As the oldest grandchild, she often took on the responsibility of looking after the younger ones during these family outings. She attended school in Dunning, graduating in 1960. During high school, she worked at the Highway Café, saving money to attend secretarial school in Omaha. After completing her training, Vernette worked in Omaha for two years before returning to the Sandhills. It was at a local dance where she met James J. McMillan, whom she married in June 1963. Together, they had two children: Thomas Joseph and Jolene Marie.&nbsp;

She devoted her life to raising her children and embracing the ranching lifestyle on the McMillan family ranch.&nbsp;Jim and Vernette occasionally enjoyed traveling including trips visiting family on the West Coast, tracing the Lewis and Clark Trail, attending bull sales to Montana, a few trips down to Texas, among others.

Vernette was an active member of the Anselmo VFW Ladies Auxiliary and later the Broken Bow VFW for 60 years, where she held officer positions, including Treasurer for many years.&nbsp;She was particularly dedicated to parade floats, making and delivering cookie plates to veterans, and selling poppies.

The neighborhood collectively agreed that Vernette was an excellent cook, once even being featured in the local Custer County Chief newspaper.&nbsp;Feeding extra guests was customary, given that visitors frequently scheduled their stops around mealtime.&nbsp;She prepared three meals a day for her family and hired hands too.&nbsp;

Vernette also had a passion for science fiction movies, Nebraska Volleyball, and turquoise and silver jewelry, adding to her vibrant personality.&nbsp;

Vernette derived immense joy from her grandchildren's activities, rarely missing a sporting event, music concert, or livestock show.&nbsp;She frequently attended her grandchildren's football, volleyball, and basketball games, wrestling tournaments, and track meets, as well as weekend softball tournaments, often with another grandchild in tow. She never missed the Dawson and Custer County Fairs, where she watched her grandchildren compete in 4-H and FFA projects.

Vernette's surviving family include her children, Thomas (Lisa) McMillan of Milburn and Jolene (Jerry) Wiggins of Gothenburg, her sister Leila (Butch) Schultz of Tok, AK, sister-in-law Helen Glidden of Taylor, NE, grandchildren Janae (Zachary) Thomas, Jacey (Matthew) Person, James Russell McMillan, BaiLee McMillan, Samuel McMillan, and great-grandson Dexter Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse James J. McMillan, and her brother Frank Glidden.

Vernette McMillan (1942-2024)

&nbsp; &nbsp; Carla Bales was called to her heavenly home on Monday, June 3, 2024, in Wahoo, Nebraska. &nbsp;She was born July 17, 1935, to Charles and Selma (Bamesberger) Cruver. Carla was the third child of four girls and attended school in McCook. She married Raymond Doyle on Sept. 6, 1953, at the Peace Lutheran Church. Their marriage was blessed with four children that they raised in McCook. On June 14, 1980, she married Floyd Bales and gained five extra children.

&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Carla sold Tupperware for many years, worked as a legal secretary for Hanson and Hanson, McCook Abstract and taught a few night classes at McCook Community College. She also volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels in McCook and in her later years enjoyed the Heritage Senior Center meals, fellowship and was always up for a game of Bridge. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were so loved by her, and you could always count on her to be sitting at a ballgame, dance recital, wrestling match or at the lake and any other activity her loved ones would be participating in. Of course, she always had her bag of yarn or thread and would crochet during any event to add to her craft items she loved to sell. &nbsp;Carla spent the last seven years in Wahoo due to Alzheimer's but her quick wit and smile made her a beloved resident of those that cared for her. Carla was the third child of four girls and attended school in McCook. She married Raymond Doyle on Sept. 6, 1953, at the Peace Lutheran Church. Their marriage was blessed with four children that they raised in McCook. On June 14, 1980, she married Floyd Bales and gained five extra children.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Carla sold Tupperware for many years, worked as a legal secretary for Hanson and Hanson, McCook Abstract and taught a few night classes at McCook Community College. She also volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels in McCook and in her later years enjoyed the Heritage Senior Center meals, fellowship and was always up for a game of Bridge. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were so loved by her, and you could always count on her to be sitting at a ballgame, dance recital, wrestling match or at the lake and any other activity her loved ones would be participating in. Of course, she always had her bag of yarn or thread and would crochet during any event to add to her craft items she loved to sell. &nbsp;Carla spent the last seven years in Wahoo due to Alzheimer's but her quick wit and smile made her a beloved resident of those that cared for her. Carla Marie Bales (1935-2024)

Gerald L. Meissner, 85, of Wellfleet, NE passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at his home. &nbsp;He was born on July 12, 1938 in Quick, NE the son of Leo and June Meissner.

He married Lynn in Lexington, NE on May 27, 1968. They were blessed with six loving children, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Gerald served the U.S. Army from 1963-1965. &nbsp;He was stationed in Hawaii as an operator. &nbsp;Over his lifetime career, he had several jobs as a switchboard operator and truck driver. &nbsp;His true passion was his family farm in Wellfleet. &nbsp;He will be truly missed by his loved ones and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Kenlyn, Kevin, Lesley, Troy, Ginia, and Susie; grandchildren, Kendrick, Kendahl, Breanna, Austin, Matthew, Madison; 6 great grandchildren; numerous extended family - nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, and wife of 54 years, Lynn.&nbsp;

A Celebration of Gerald’s Life will be held at Thanksgiving, which was the family’s most cherished holiday.

Bethel “Beth” Eilene Miller, 100, of Oshkosh passed away early Friday morning, May 31, 2024 at her home on Lost Creek Ranch north of Oshkosh surrounded by her loving family.

Cremation has taken place and there are no formal services planned. Private family service will be held at a later date.

Bethel was born on September 21, 1923 in Davenport, lowa to George &amp; Lora (Potter) Bostwick, where her father was attending medical school. After his graduation they returned to Nebraska. Bethel graduated from North Platte High School and attended Kearney State College. She then married Art B. Miller on February 14, 1943. To this union two sons were born: Ted &amp; Rick. Their marriage lasted almost seventy years until Art's passing on February 4, 2013.

As a young bride she and Art owned and operated a small dairy farm near Maxwell, Nebraska. Bethel helped milk at 4 a.m., cooked on a wood burning stove and had no indoor plumbing. Years later they purchased a motel in Sidney which Bethel managed. &nbsp;Ted &amp; Rick then went to school in Sidney. Art traveled from Maxwell on weekends to be with the family while his cousin took care of the farm in Maxwell. &nbsp;Due to a horse related accident that severely injured Art, they sought an easier life and bought a ranch north of Oshkosh in 1966. They ran a cattle operation and grew corn and alfalfa until Art passed away at age 89.

Bethel was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all. Bethel's passion was gardening. She so enjoyed flowers. Her yard was once featured in a garden magazine, and she won many ribbons at the Garden County Fair for her creative arrangements. She was a charter member of the Garden County Garden Club for over sixty years and hosted their annual Harvest Banquet at the ranch each year. She definitely had a gift of hospitality as she welcomed everyone to her home and provided meals for them no matter the time of day and provided beds if they needed to stay. Bethel was playful and mischievous. She often caught her family off guard by her antics, so they always knew to expect the unexpected when visiting the ranch. &nbsp;She cooked for all the brandings, even the Rocky Mountain Oysters! She was a really good cook! No one could match her cinnamon rolls. She also won ribbons at fair for her baking.

Bethel was actively involved in the community: member of Wesleyan Church teaching Sunday School, youth group activities with hayrides, ladies group and volunteering wherever needed. Bethel remained active until she fractured her hip in 2019. After recovering at Ted's home, she chose to stay at the ranch with her roly-poly walker and golf cart to get around planting her garden and flowers until May of this year. Bethel was a true pioneer woman as her life has been lived in the spirit of early Nebraskans. She was given the honorary title award by Governor Jim Pillen in 2023: ADMIRAL The Great Navy of the STATE OF NEBRASKA.

She is survived by sons Ted (Karen) of Oshkosh, Rick, of Tucumcari, New Mexico, ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, brothers, George (Marilyn) and Dick Bostwick and nieces, nephews and cousins.

In eternal life Bethel joins her husband, Art, parents, sisters Lois (Irvin) &amp; Jeannie (Jerry), granddaughter Laura, niece Diny &amp; nephew David.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Mary Lynn (Graf) Marsh passed peacefully in her sleep on June 2, 2024, at Bryan West Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; Mary was born August 31, 1946 in Loop City, Nebraska to George and Jannetta (Jensen) Graf.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Her parents made their home in Brush, Colorado where Mary, along with her four siblings, attended the local school and helped on the family farm. &nbsp;When Mary was a sophomore, her parents moved the family to Indianola, Nebraska where her mother found work as a schoolteacher and her father worked for the railroad. &nbsp;Shortly after the move, she met the love of her life, Walter “Skip” Marsh. &nbsp;She graduated from Indianola High School in 1964. &nbsp;She then attended Colorado State College of Education at Greeley, Colorado. &nbsp;She Graduated with a degree in teaching in 1967. &nbsp;After graduation, Mary and Skip Marsh were married in the Catholic Church in Brush on June 3, 1967. &nbsp;She and Skip returned to Indianola where Skip farmed and Mary taught kindergarten at Indianola Elementary School. &nbsp;They soon started a family. &nbsp;Mary taught a few years but as her family grew she decided she needed to be at home to raise her children. &nbsp;Mary and Skip raised eight children. They are members of St Catherine's Catholic Church, Mary was an active member of the Altar Society, Mrs. XJC’s and the Red Hat Society. &nbsp;She was a scout leader, 4-H leader, substitute teacher, leader of the CCD program for the children in the church, and kept herself busy with her passions, which were gardening and sewing. &nbsp;In 1995, while her last three children were still at home she and Skip bought the Indianola newspaper and for the next 22 years she was the editor-in-chief of the Indianola News. &nbsp;She loved reading, sewing and spending time with her children and grandchildren. &nbsp;She will be loved and missed by all who knew her. &nbsp; &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; Mary was preceded in death by her parents, George and Jennetta Graf; son, Joseph; and sister, Linda Muchow.

Mary Lynn Marsh (1946-2024)

&nbsp; Rodney Ray Longmore, 70, of Callaway, Nebraska, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at the Callaway Good Life Center in Callaway, Nebraska.

He was born on July 9, 1953, in Sutherland, Nebraska, to Clarence Lewis and Ruby May (Matson) Longmore. His family moved to Elsie, Nebraska, where he graduated from High School. After high school, Rodney moved to Cozad, where he began his career working for Tenneco-Monroe. He dedicated over 30 years to the company before ultimately retiring. On August 31, 1974, Rodney was united in marriage to the love of his life, Dorothy Ballenger in Overton, Nebraska. Three children were blessed to this union: April, Donna, and Tony. They made their home in Cozad for many years until 2019, when Rodney moved to Callaway, Nebraska.

Rodney enjoyed spending his time outdoors where he could go fishing and spend many hours tending to his garden. If he wasn't outside, you could find him at home, working on his cross stitch, reading mystery and true crime novels, watching westerns or his favorite show, Wheel of Fortune. Everyone knew not to bother Rodney once Wheel of Fortune was on. He loved to joke around with his family, and enjoyed making people laugh and smile.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, April (Matt) Dinges of Cozad, Donna (Jermey) Siemering of Cozad, and Tony (Robin) Longmore of Grand Island; grandchildren, Christopher (Alexis) Dinges, Jasper Dinges, Caden Dinges, Karly (Dakota) Pooschke, Trestian (Tori) Siemering, Taylore (Makayla) Siemering, Austin Longmore, Zachary Longmore, and Hannah Kubik; great-grandchildren, Harry, Harper, Braylynn and Oakley, as well as extended family and friends.

Besides his parents, Rodney was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Longmore, and sister, Wanda Ballenger.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington, with Pastor Dean Haidle, officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 10, 2024, with family receiving guests from 5-7 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

Everyone knew not to bother Rodney once Wheel of Fortune was on. Philip Ewert (1936-2024)

Connie Lou (Loghry) Dye, 84, of North Platte, NE passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at Linden Court.

Connie was born on January 4, 1940 to Max and Nellie (Pulley) Loghry in Maywood, NE. &nbsp;She was raised on a farm south of Curtis and attended grade school at District 91 in Frontier County. &nbsp;She attended high school at the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis, graduating with the class of 1957.

After graduation, Connie came to North Platte to attend the School of Commerce. &nbsp;Connie met Dallis Dye at a Hadley Barrett dance in Sutherland, NE, and they were married on April 24, 1960, in Curtis. &nbsp;Two children, Rodney and Nancy, were born to this union. &nbsp;They made their home in North Platte except for living in McCook from 1963 to 1969.

Connie worked for Dr. C. F. Heider, Sr. and Jr., and worked as a teacher’s aide at Adams Junior High School. &nbsp;In 1977, Dallis and Connie bought Cohagen Transfer and Storage. &nbsp;In 1981 Connie went to work for the family business. &nbsp;Dallis and Connie loved to square dance and did lots of camping. &nbsp;They traveled in their motor home as much as time allowed spending some time in Apache Junction, AZ. &nbsp;She was a member of the RSVP, and enjoyed going to Branson, MO every September with friends for several years. &nbsp;They were Husker fans who never missed a home game if possible.

Connie was preceded in death by her husband Dallis in 2013, her parents, a sister Leona and husband Ivan Boone, her in laws Orley and Edith (Baxter) Dye, a sister-in-law Carolyn Dye, and a great granddaughter Leyha Bartels.

Connie is survived by a son, Rod (Crystal) Dye of North Platte; daughter, Nancy (Terry) McNew of North Platte; six grandchildren, Sara (Kyle) Baker of North Platte, Jennifer (Troy) Bayne of Hershey, Melissa (Shane) Blackburn of North Platte, Josh (Jane) Dye of Sutherland, Nicholas (Catie) McNew, and Brandi (Justin) Erickson both of North Platte; eleven great grandchildren, three great-great grandsons; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with Pastor Patrick Sipes officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in Maywood Cemetery. &nbsp;Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, June 10th at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which has been entrusted with the arrangements. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Connie Lou Dye (1940-2024)

Jake Harrison VanHorn Sr., born March 13, 1971, died on June 2, 2024, at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado, after a long battle with diabetes.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 14, 2024 at the Holechek-Bondegard Funeral Home in Chappell with Pastor Martin Fleming officiating.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Jake grew up in Western Montana and loved to be outside. He rodeoed in high school and played football and wrestled. He was a true and loyal friend with a goofy sense of humor about him. He went to horseshoeing school in Montana and worked on ranches. Being a cowboy was his true calling. He loved working with horses and cattle. He moved to Grand Island, Nebraska, to work in a feedlot, thinking the weather would be warmer. He did not realize what humidity was. After that, he thought he should have kept going south!

He did not end up going south, though. Nor did he travel back north. He stayed in Central Nebraska. There he met good friends and eventually moved out to Western Nebraska where, in 2001, he met Patsy Baker. Later, on September 5, 2004, Jake and Patsy were married. &nbsp;Together, they moved to Gillette, Wyoming, where their daughter, Bailey, was born. Not long after that, they moved back to Ogallala, Nabraska.

Jake worked at some different jobs until health issues got in the way. He then started his own leather shop. This was a dream of his since long before he and Patsy met. He ran his own business with the help of family for 10 years. Jake and Patsy welcomed their son, Jack Jr., during this time.

Jake was forced to close his shop as his diabetes worsened.

He enjoyed hunting, working with leather, and hanging out with family. He loved his kids, and wanted to show them all the things in life that he could. He wanted them to learn all the lessons the easy way, instead of the hard way - how he had learned them.

Jake is preceded in death by his father, Jack Harrison VanHorn; stepfather, Jerry Gasho; grandparents, James and Gladys VanHorn, Chester and Rose Gasho, Charles Keith, and Ada Moore; and his nephew, Bryer Wilson.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy VanHorn; his kids, Bailey and Jack VanHorn; his mother, Linda Gasho; sister-in-law, Lisa (Gabe) Wilson; nieces, Brianna and Annlyn Wilson; nephew, Truman (Caroline) Wilson; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Starla Nadine Sherman Jackson was born January 24, 1969, in Valentine, NE to Hugh Loren and Roberta Jean (Lawlis) Sherman. Being the last born from a family of nine, Starla was blessed with creativity and a strong work ethic. She attended college at Colby Community College in Colby, KS, and studied for a degree in veterinary tech. However, she married before finishing her degree.

Starla was a person with a very generous heart and loved all things animals, especially horses. Horses were always a part of her life whether she was riding or caring for them. Her consideration for others was evident in her baking and cooking skills, and then giving away to others. Other interests and hobbies she loved were quilting, crafting, and reading books. She always had a large and beautiful garden that she used for giving away produce and canning many jars for later use. Starla had a very creative heart and at one time wrote short articles of interest for the Fence Post magazine.

Her love for horses and cattle was evident as she mostly worked for feedlots wherever her home was established.

Starla is survived by daughter Jamie (Will) Huston from Torrington, WY, sons Brett Menuey of Washington, and Rowdy Jackson of Litchfield, two grandchildren Danielle and Montgomery Huston, siblings Frances Vasa of Arthur, Myra Boje of Hampton, Neva Sherman of Minnesota, and Sally Ruelas of Wisconsin, sisters-in-laws Helen Sherman of Valentine and Jane Sherman of Valentine.

Lavonne Rae Baker, formerly of Callaway, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024, at Citizen's Medical Center in Colby, Kansas at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 14 days.&nbsp;

She was born on April 17, 1937, in Callaway, Nebraska to Billie Dale and Vera M (Lange) Strong. Lavonne attended school in Callaway, Nebraska and graduated with the class of 1954. On October 17, 1955 she married Roland (Ronnie) Baker. They lived in Grand Island &amp; Gothenburg, Nebraska until they moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1965. &nbsp;They enjoyed dancing and Colorado Buffalo Football for many years. &nbsp;In 2020, she moved to Kansas where her youngest daughter lives. Lavonne always had a smile and was spunky and friendly to everyone she met. Lavonne is deeply missed but no longer in pain. &nbsp;We love you Mom, Grandma (Granny) until we meet again.

Lavonne Ray Baker (1937-2024)

John Scott Gibson, age 79, Marine Veteran of the Vietnam War, passed away on May 31, 2024, at the Community Hospital in McCook, NE.

John was born on March 1, 1945, to John and Dorothy (Kelley) Gibson in Scottsbluff, NE. John attended school in McCook, NE.&nbsp;

On June 17, 1963, John joined the Marine Corps and proudly served our country until 1966, serving two terms in Vietnam.&nbsp;

On August 23, 1965, John married Collen L. Fisher.&nbsp; To this union their daughter, Shelley, was born.

John married Judy Ann Gebauer on August 9, 1974, together they raised their two sons Rick and Curtis in Fort Morgan, CO, where John resided until Judy’s death in 2021.&nbsp;

John entered the oil field business shortly after returning from Vietnam working his way up from entry level field work to ownership of oil field related businesses, and eventually participating in oil wells and mineral ownership.

John enjoyed traveling to various places but even more so when he was able to take family and friends alongside. Mexico will forever have a special place in the hearts of John’s family and friends.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, racing cars, collecting and hunting arrowheads, and collecting guns and coins.&nbsp;

John will always be remembered for his generosity. He had a very big heart and was always willing to help those in need. From serving in the military, donating to multiple charities, to helping his friends and family.&nbsp;

John was proceeded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy; and his wife, Judy.

Survivors include his children, Shelly (Terry) Hoffmaster of McCook, NE, Rick (Therese) Gibson of Brush, CO, and Curtis Gibson of Mineral Wells, TX; brother, Jerry (Pam) Gibson of Manteca, CA; grandchildren, Candice Martin, Michell (Brandon) Hughes, Amber (Nate) Priddy, Katie Hoffmaster (Matt), Kelsey Plank, and Tyler Gibson; great-grandchildren, Payton, Asher, Jolie, Harlow, Cannon, Emersyn, Hayden, Malina, Gianna, Audrianna, and Grajeda; and lots of extended family and lifelong friends.&nbsp;

John attended school in McCook, NE.&nbsp;On June 17, 1963, John joined the Marine Corps and proudly served our country until 1966, serving two terms in Vietnam.&nbsp;On August 23, 1965, John married Collen L. Fisher.&nbsp; To this union their daughter, Shelley, was born.John married Judy Ann Gebauer on August 9, 1974, together they raised their two sons Rick and Curtis in Fort Morgan, CO, where John resided until Judy’s death in 2021.&nbsp;John entered the oil field business shortly after returning from Vietnam working his way up from entry level field work to ownership of oil field related businesses, and eventually participating in oil wells and mineral ownership.John enjoyed traveling to various places but even more so when he was able to take family and friends alongside. Mexico will forever have a special place in the hearts of John’s family and friends.His hobbies included hunting, fishing, racing cars, collecting and hunting arrowheads, and collecting guns and coins.&nbsp;John will always be remembered for his generosity. He had a very big heart and was always willing to help those in need. Marlynn K. Gerloff, age 87 of Frisco, TX (formerly of Ogallala, NE) passed away at Stonemere Rehabilitation in Frisco, TX.

Marlynn Kay Gerloff was born in Ogallala, NE to Herman and Irene (Purdy) Huff, she attended Ogallala Schools and then went on to attend Purdue University to pursue her bachelor's degree in Interior Design.

On October 21st, 1956 she married Eldean Dale Gerloff in the Methodist Church of Ogallala. Marlynn was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family.

She was involved with 4H and enjoyed different types of theater shows. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, and playing cards; especially bridge, but nothing compared to her love for spending time with her family.

A memorial service has been scheduled for Friday, August 9, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ogallala, NE with Reverend Albert Bader officiating.

She is preceded in death by her, father, Herman Huff; mother, Irene Huff, and husband Eldean Gerloff.

Marlynn is survived by her three daughters, Diane Johnson, Sheryl (Rich) Marshall, and Kathy (Purnell) White; sister Rhonda (Norm) Duba; one niece; one nephew; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Marlynn Kay Gerloff (1936-2024)

Darrill Lee Crouch, age 85, of West Des Moines, IA (formerly of Broken Bow) passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at Arbor Springs Dementia Care in West Des Moines, IA.

He was born on March 15, 1939, to Merrill and Marie (Nixon) Crouch in Arnold, Nebraska. The family lived on a farm near Arnold until moving to their ranch in Blaine County in 1944. The family moved to Burwell in 1959. Darrill attended grade school in Blaine County and high school in Taylor, NE graduating with the class of 1957.

&nbsp;On June 26, 1960, he married Shirley Hesselgesser in Burwell, and to this union two children were born: a son, Douglas Ray, and daughter, Teresa Lynn. In 1966, the family moved to Broken Bow where Darrill worked for Becton-Dickinson, retiring in 1999. Having grown up on a ranch and working for ranchers in his early years, Darrill always had a love for raising cattle. After retiring from B-D, he raised cattle full-time. For several years he raised and sold herd bulls. As his health began to fail, he fully retired in 2020. &nbsp;ln November 2023, Darrill and Shirley moved to West Des Moines, IA to seek skilled dementia care and be closer to family.

Darrill's family was always very important to him, and he loved every opportunity he had to spend time with them. John (Jerry) Ahrens, 93, left his earthly body and assumed his incorruptible heavenly body the afternoon of May 31, 2024. &nbsp;Jerry was surrounded by his immediate family and special friends as he took his last breaths.

John (Jerry) William Ahrens was born on July 4, 1930 in Scottsbluff, NE. &nbsp; He and younger sister Jane were the children of John F. and Margaret Ahrens of Arnold, NE. &nbsp;Except for a couple of years in Lusk, WY, Jerry grew up on a farm south of Arnold where he attended the Mackley country school through the 8th&nbsp;grade, then attended and graduated from Arnold High School. &nbsp; Jerry first met Darb (Darlene) Spencer at a house party in Broken Bow. &nbsp;Jerry was dancing with a young lady and as he bent her back, he spotted Darb as she walked into the room and promptly dropped his date on the furnace grate. &nbsp; Jerry and Darb were married on New Year’s Eve, 1948, and proceeded to spend their entire 2-week honeymoon snowed in at the Spencer farm with Jerry’s new in-laws. &nbsp;Jerry and Darb lived and farmed 9 miles south of Arnold, NE where they raised three children: Cindy, John, and Carla. &nbsp;In 1984, they retired from farming and moved into Arnold. &nbsp;Jerry and Darb shared a heart of compassion for anyone in need. &nbsp;It was not uncommon for Jerry and Darb to have someone, related or not, living in their home for weeks and even months at a time while they ministered to their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. &nbsp;People were the focus of Jerry’s life and as a result, he positively impacted a host of individuals who were blessed by his friendship and humor.

Jerry is preceded in death by Darb, his wife of 62 years and great-grandson Doyle (Dub) Bellew. &nbsp;He is survived by his children, Cindy Ahrens of Sidney, NE, John (Lu Ann) Ahrens of Edgewood, NM, and Carla (John) Huscher of Valley, NE, sister Jane Tucker of Arnold, NE, 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren.

&nbsp;&nbsp; Beverley Grafel passed away at the age of 83 on June 1, 2024 from Endometrial Cancer. &nbsp;She was born in Indianola, Nebraska to Albert and Eva (Hill) Young. &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; Beverley graduated from Indianola High School in 1959. &nbsp; She married Elmore Grafel on June 4, 1961. &nbsp;They bought a house and moved it south of Culbertson in 1964. &nbsp;Here they farmed and raised animals. &nbsp;She bottle fed many baby calves and they raised many pigs. &nbsp;She was a Girl Scout leader for 10 years; she was on the Board of Director for Girl Scouts of Kearney for six years and taught Sunday School for 25 Years. She has been a member of the Immanual Church of Christ in Herndon, Kansas. &nbsp;She was involved in many clubs: the Culbertson Women’s Club, Red Hatters, Women’s Guild, two card clubs and the Foxy Ladies. &nbsp;She was treasurer of UCC memorial fund and treasurer of North Herndon Telephone Company. &nbsp;She worked for Area Agency on Aging for 25 years. &nbsp;Her love was her grandchildren, sewing, visiting with people and her ducks. &nbsp;In her spare time, she made over 6700 potholders and some of them went to other states. &nbsp;She made over 100 quilts and gave some of them to neighbors and friends.&nbsp;

Beverley "Bev" Grafel (1940-2024)

Regina Bernice Barnes, known affectionately as "Genie," passed away on May 30, 2024 in Kearney, NE. She was born on July 28, 1945, in her hometown of Wahoo, Nebraska to Elbert Palmer and Mahala Palmer (Kuhn).

&nbsp;Growing up in Wahoo, NE was where she spent her childhood years before moving to Hickman, NE to begin her adult life. She had four beautiful children with her first spouse, Charles Eaton. Later, she married the love of her life, Charles “Keith” Barnes. Their devotion to each other was apparent to all. When they would gaze into one another’s eyes, their love was palpable. After meeting, they settled in Imperial, NE. Before her chronic health decline, she cherished the time spent dancing with her true love, Keith. &nbsp;Genie then led a fulfilling life raising her children and always being available to lend an ear and piece of advice to anyone, family or friend, who knocked on the door. &nbsp; Along with this, she worked as a waitress and eventually she went to college to complete her AA in Business. Genie also found happiness in gardening, crocheting and sewing. Many unforgettable family times often included playing games and cards. She will forever be known as the Farkle champion!! &nbsp;

Genie is survived by her sisters; Priscilla McGee and Cynthia Overby, her children; Melissa Foster (Brian), Nicole Eaton, Eric Eaton (Kristy Godsey), and Nancy Shearey (Chad); along with a legacy of 28 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren who will continue to honor her memory.

&nbsp;She is preceded in death by her father Elbert Palmer, mother Mahala Palmer (Kuhn), first husband Charles Eaton, husband Charles Keith Barnes, brother Augustus Palmer, and her niece Stacey Elsasser.

Genie touched the lives of many who she knew with her kindness, humor and selflessness. &nbsp;She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. To all of her family, she will always be known as everybody’s favorite (aunt, cousin, niece, sister etc.). &nbsp;&nbsp;

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 4 from 4:00 - 6:00 P.M. (MT) at Liewer Funeral Home in Imperial. &nbsp;

A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday June 5, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. (MT) at the United Methodist Church in Imperial, NE with Reverend Brian Loy officiating. Interment to follow at the Blanche Cemetery. &nbsp;

 </figure>Regina Bernice Barnes, known affectionately as "Genie," passed away on May 30, 2024 in Kearney, NE. She was born on July 28, 1945, in her hometown of Wahoo, Nebraska to Elbert Palmer and Mahala Palmer (Kuhn).&nbsp;Growing up in Wahoo, NE was where she spent her childhood years before moving to Hickman, NE to begin her adult life. She had four beautiful children with her first spouse, Charles Eaton. Later, she married the love of her life, Charles “Keith” Barnes. Their devotion to each other was apparent to all. When they would gaze into one another’s eyes, their love was palpable. After meeting, they settled in Imperial, NE. Regina Bernice Barnes (1945-2024)

Alfred E. Lee Raby, 89, of North Platte, NE passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at Community Memorial Nursing Home in Burwell, NE. &nbsp;Alfred was born on August 23, 1934 in Gastonia, NC the son of Ralph Jennings and Lura “Polly” (Hensley) Raby.

Alfred entered the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1954. &nbsp;He boxed while he was in the Air Force and was inducted into the “Carolinas Boxing Hall of Fame” with a combined amateur and professional record of 75 wins, 9 defeats. &nbsp;“He’s got the kind of heart the Lord ought to give every fighter” said renowned amateur boxing coach T.L. McManus. &nbsp;Al loved music and played professionally for most of his life all over the country. &nbsp;He played gigs in small bars and famous venues such as the “Palomino Club” where, in its heyday,&nbsp; many country legends such as George Jones and Willie Nelson hosted events. &nbsp;Al was a true “showman” and loved entertaining people. &nbsp;He had an endless catalog of songs from old country to old rock that he could play from memory. &nbsp;Al married Marie Hawley on September 1, 1975. &nbsp;He was a loving husband, supportive father, and proud grandfather. &nbsp;He loved a good corn boil with his family including a fun-filled competition of who could eat the most ears of sweet corn. &nbsp;He never met a stranger and inspired and impacted so many people in many positive ways through his encouragement and charisma. &nbsp;You could see the joy around him, and he shared it with others. &nbsp;The community of North Platte will surely miss Al “The Rock” Raby. &nbsp;

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, Marie; children, Daryl Raby of Gastonia, NC, Luke (Colleen O’Holleran) Raby of Denver, CO, Brandon (Kristine Henningsen) Raby of North Platte, and Misty (Dave) Schottelkotte of North Platte; stepchildren, Wanda (Ernie) Zachry of Stapleton, NE, Dennis (Susan Carracino) Kremer of Spokane, WA, and Rodney (Teri Cairns) Kremer of Bend, OR; grandchildren, Baila Atencio, Jack Raby, Emmett Raby, and Kingston Schottelkotte.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris Raby; brothers, William Raby Sr., Ralph Raby Jr., and Herman Raby Sr.&nbsp;

Memorial services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2024 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. &nbsp;Burial with military honors will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Fort McPherson National Veterans Cemetery, near Maxwell. &nbsp;Following services at the Fort a gathering for family and friends will be held at The Espresso Shop in North Platte. &nbsp;Arrangements have been entrusted to Carpenter Memorial Chapel. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Memorials may be made to Fort Cody Music Series to support live music. &nbsp;
