The Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (CS-CASH) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health, in collaboration with Nebraska Extension, has announced the dates for its annual tractor and equipment safety training courses. These sessions will take place at eight locations across Nebraska during May and June.

“Young farmers and ranchers are more apt to experience injuries and fatalities due to factors that can be attributed to their inexperience, physical limitations, and environmental risks,” said Ellen Duysen, associate research professor and CS-CASH outreach specialist. “By completing this training, these young workers gain awareness of the many hazards associated with agricultural work and develop skills through hands-on training.”

Federal law restricts youth under the age of 16 from operating certain farm equipment unless the farm is owned by their parents or legal guardians. However, certification through the National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program (NSTMOP) provides an exemption, allowing 14- and 15-year-olds to drive tractors and operate specific mechanized equipment.

In Nebraska, CS-CASH and Nebraska Extension work together to offer NSTMOP certification. This certification is earned by completing a two-day course that includes both a written test and a driving exam. Youth who complete the training are certified to operate tractors and certain mechanized equipment on farms and ranches and can also obtain a husbandry permit.

The cost for the two-day course is $60, which covers educational materials, online learning access (if applicable), supplies, and lunch and snacks for in-person training sessions.

Youth under the age of 14 can attend Day One if accompanied by an adult, but they are not eligible to drive equipment, participate in Day Two or receive certification. Students under 14 must register, but they will not be charged a fee. Adults who want to increase their knowledge about safe farm practices are also urged to attend.

LINCOLN, Nebraska&nbsp;– Between Jan. 30 and March 11, Nebraska high school students competed around the state during regional Envirothon competitions demonstrating natural resources knowledge by identifying trees and animal tracks, calculating the number of steers on rangeland, and determining soil structure.

The winning teams from each Envirothon region as well as eight wildcards – selected based on their competition scores – qualify to compete at the Nebraska State Envirothon. Out of the 70 teams that competed, this year’s state qualifiers include:

Traditionally, Nebraska’s six regional Envirothon competitions are hosted in conjunction with district agriculture education contests. High school students compete on five-member teams in seven environmental areas including: soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife, range, policy and a current environmental issue.

Qualifying teams will compete at the State Envirothon April 30, at Chalco Hills Recreation Area in Omaha, Nebraska. During the state competition, teams compete in hands-on environmental testing stations as well as prepare and deliver an oral problem-solving presentation focusing on “Roots &amp; Resiliency: Fostering Forest Stewardship in a Canopy of Change.”

The NARD Board consists of representatives from each of Nebraska’s 23 Natural Resources Districts (NRDs). The board meets five times throughout the year and helps guide the association and NRDs in decision making that protects lives, property and the future of Nebraska’s natural resources. The NARD Risk Pool Board governs the health insurance program for NRD employees.

Marty Graff, NARD President (Ainsworth, Nebraska)&nbsp;Marty Graff of the Middle Niobrara NRD was elected president of the NARD Board and NARD Risk Pool Board. Graff has served on the Middle Niobrara NRD Board 30 years and on the NARD boards since 2018. He farms with his wife, Brenda, and sons near Ainsworth. Off the farm, Graff serves on the East Woodlawn Cemetery Board (Johnstown, Nebraska) and is active in the Elks Club helping with youth baseball and wrestling.

Ryan Reuter, NARD Vice President (Minatare, Nebraska)&nbsp;Ryan Reuter of the North Platte NRD was elected vice president of the NARD Board and NARD Risk Pool Board. Reuter, a sales manager with Betaseed and ACH Seeds, has served on the North Platte NRD and NARD boards since 2018. Reuter and his wife Amie have two daughters, Avery and Addison.

He served as president from 2022-2024 and has been on the boards since 1996. Gigstad has served on the Nemaha NRD Board since 1993 and serves as vice chair with the National Association of Conservation Districts Northern Plains Region. A practicing veterinarian for more than 45 years, he operates the Arbor Valley Animal Clinic in Syracuse. Gigstad and his wife Carolyn have two children, Grady and Amber, and grandchildren, Quincy and Amelia.

In addition to the president, vice president, secretary-treasurer and past president, the NARD Board executive committee includes Terry Martin, Legislative Committee chair representing the Upper Republican NRD, and Bob Hilger, Information and Education Committee chair representing the Lower Platte North NRD.

Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts Managers Committee&nbsp;On March 5, the NRD managers elected Wade Ellwanger, general manager of the Lower Niobrara NRD, as chair of the Managers Committee; and Kyle Hauschild, general manager of the Nemaha NRD, as vice-chair of the Managers Committee.

Wade Ellwanger, Lower Niobrara NRD&nbsp;Wade Ellwanger was promoted to general manager of the Lower Niobrara NRD in March 2023. Prior to his promotion, he served the district for six years as a water resources coordinator and assistant manager. He also has more than 20 years of production management experience in the ag industry. Ellwanger earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is a Class IX graduate of the Nebraska Water Leaders Academy.&nbsp;He is a native of Butte, Nebraska, and has six children and six grandchildren.

Kyle Hauschild, Nemaha NRD&nbsp;Kyle Hauschild became the general manager of the Nemaha NRD in January 2021. He previously served as general manager of the Little Blue NRD (2018-2020) and stormwater/floodplain specialist at Lower Platte South NRD (2014-2018). Hauschild lives in Gretna with his wife Kelli and daughters Keira and Kaya.

The Managers Committee includes managers from all 23 Natural Resources Districts. The committee meets five times a year to coordinate NRD activities with state and federal agencies, conservation partners and other parties to protect Nebraska’s natural resources.

The Nebraska State Patrol is building the next class of troopers prepared to serve in communities across the state. Troopers serve in many career paths including patrol,&nbsp;criminal investigator, K9 handler, crash investigator, pilot, tactical flight officer, crisis negotiator, drone operator, hazmat technician, and many more. Troopers can also serve in specialty units including the SWAT Team, Carrier Enforcement, Bomb Squad, Executive Protection, Training Academy, Mobile Field Force, and the Husker Football Detail.

The next NSP training class is set to begin on July 7, with graduation scheduled for December 19, 2025. The application process is open until March 31.

Troopers earn a starting salary of $32.45 per hour ($67,496 annually) upon graduation from the NSP Training Academy. Recruits are paid $28.85 during the academy process.&nbsp;Troopers also receive an excellent retirement plan, health, vision, dental, and life insurance, as well as free college tuition for you and your dependents at the University of Nebraska, state colleges, or community colleges.

Troopers also have opportunities for additional pay, including overtime hours at a pay rate of 1.5 times their base salary rate, shift differential pay of an additional $1.00 per hour if they are regularly assigned to the night shift, and a 2.5 percent pay increase for qualifying as bilingual.&nbsp;

The Flatrock Pro/Am will be a captivating two-day, three-round B-tier tournament featuring both professional and amateur players. On March 15th, competitors will play the first two rounds, with the third and final round held on March 16th for select divisions. All participants must be current PDGA members; those who are not yet members can join during the registration process.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to know if they are protected against measles. Measles is a very contagious disease that causes high fever and rash and may cause other serious complications.

Measles is rapidly spreading in parts of Texas and New Mexico, and cases have also been seen in multiple other states in 2025. Most cases have been reported in people who are not vaccinated (have not had their shots) or whose vaccination status is unknown. There have been no cases reported in Nebraska yet.

“Measles is a highly contagious vaccine-preventable disease,” states Melissa Propp RN, Clinic Manager with SWNPHD. “The MMR vaccine we use is very safe and effective.&nbsp; It is very important to be protected from this serious illness.”

Symptoms of measles can appear anywhere from 2 days to 21 days after being exposed to the virus. Signs and symptoms of measles include:

A person with measles can spread the virus to other people even before they show symptoms. Measles spreads quickly when people come in contact with the virus. Nine out of 10 unvaccinated people will develop measles if they are exposed. This virus spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The measles virus can stay in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours after a person leaves a room, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).&nbsp;

Before the invention of the measles vaccine in 1963, there were almost half a million cases of measles every year in the United States.&nbsp;CDC recommends that people get MMR vaccine to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella. Children should get two doses of MMR vaccine, starting with the first dose at 12 to 15 months of age. The second dose is typically given at age 5 or 6 just before kindergarten but can be given as early as age 4.

Teens and adults should also make sure to be up to date on their MMR vaccinations, especially if planning on traveling to areas with measles cases.&nbsp;Nebraska residents can look up their shot records in the Nebraska State Immunization Information System (NESIIS) at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nesiis-dhhs-prod.ne.gov/">nesiis-dhhs-prod.ne.gov</a>.

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;– Governor Jim Pillen announced awards for projects in three districts of the state’s&nbsp;6 Regions, One Nebraska&nbsp;initiative (Central, Mid-Plains, and Western). The announcement took place during a news conference in Scottsbluff.&nbsp;

“Nebraskans compete incredibly hard to succeed, but too often we’ve competed against one another,” said Gov. Pillen. “6 Regions, One Nebraska&nbsp;takes a different approach—prioritizing shared wellbeing above individual accomplishment. It’s been encouraging to see the statewide embrace of this partnership model for growth.”&nbsp;

Gov. Pillen was joined at the news conference by K.C. Belitz, director of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED); regional navigators and co-chairs; community college leaders; and awarded project applicants.&nbsp;

“I am grateful for Governor Pillen’s vision to bring our state together through the&nbsp;6 Regions, One Nebraska&nbsp;initiative,” said DED Director K.C. Belitz. “We’re undergoing an attitudinal change—helping Nebraskans compete together as teammates rather than against one another as rivals. The wisdom of thinking regionally about growth is clearly resonating with leaders. We’re seeing impressive engagement in work sessions and on regional priority projects.”

Launched in 2024,&nbsp;6 Regions, One Nebraska&nbsp;encourages cooperation, rather than competition, among neighboring communities. Each region had two formal gatherings in 2024, along with numerous virtual work sessions. At the first meeting, leaders reviewed economic and demographic data specific to their community college district. Participants decided on priority areas to serve as a starting point for collaborative action. Subsequently, working groups identified potential solutions to address needs and developed one project for which to seek state-administered American Rescue Plan Act funds.

At the second meeting, participants heard reports from each action team and discussed steps to move forward with a funding application. Each region successfully supported one application for an award of $200,000. State leaders have engaged philanthropic organizations to raise additional funds to support the awarded projects.

“Our communities in the Panhandle have great career opportunities, and they’re wonderful places to raise a family,” said Owen Palm, President and CEO of 21st Century Equipment and co-chair of the Western region. “To attract new residents, it’s also important that we encourage development of affordable housing. We’re thankful for the State’s support as we jointly undertake a housing infrastructure assessment in Western Nebraska.”

The Mid-Plains region also identified housing as a top priority, backing a funding request from Mid-Plains Community College for a workforce housing revitalization project.

“It’s been remarkable to see leaders unite across the region to prioritize growth,” said Ryan Purdy, president of Mid-Plains Community College. “Together, we’re committed to rapidly increasing our inventories of workforce housing. As a college, we look forward to expanding the region’s skilled-trades workforce to take on new housing development and rehabilitation projects.”&nbsp;

The Central Community College District chose to focus on adding childcare capacity throughout the region.

“Throughout central Nebraska, there’s a shortage of childcare slots available to families,” said Denise Zwiener, CEO of Buffalo County Community Partners. “Through our Childcare Champions program, we’ve had success equipping entrepreneurs to achieve licensure and open new childcare centers. We’re grateful for this award, which will help us further increase childcare capacity across our region.”&nbsp;

[North Platte, NE]—On&nbsp;Saturday, March 15, 2025, the American Legion proudly celebrates its&nbsp;106th anniversary, marking over a century of unwavering support for veterans, their families, and communities across the nation. This milestone commemorates the day in&nbsp;1919&nbsp;when the first American Legion caucus was held by members of the American Expeditionary Force in Paris, France, laying the foundation for the nation’s largest veterans service organization.

Since its inception, the American Legion has been a pillar of advocacy, providing essential resources, programs, and support to those who have served our country. From securing veterans' benefits to fostering patriotism and youth development, the American Legion continues to profoundly impact countless lives.

North Platte, Neb., March 11, 2025 -- Great Plains Health has launched a new online&nbsp; appointment scheduling feature through MyChart, allowing patients to book medical&nbsp; appointments on their own time without making a phone call.&nbsp;

The new self-scheduling capability is now available for established patients in Great&nbsp; Plains Family Medicine, Great Plains Pediatrics and Great Plains Health Internal&nbsp; Medicine, with plans to expand to additional specialties in the future.&nbsp;

"This online scheduling feature gives patients more control over their health care by&nbsp; simplifying the appointment process," said Ivan Mitchell, chief executive officer of Great&nbsp; Plains Health. LINCOLN –The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA), in conjunction with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has detected a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a backyard flock in Dawson County.  This latest case brings the total number of Nebraska flocks impacted by HPAI to 4 backyard flocks affecting approx. 219 birds in 2025.  

State Veterinarian Dr. Roger Dudley continues to remind poultry producers to practice good biosecurity with their flocks including minimizing exposure to wild birds and washing hands and changing clothes (including shoes) before and after coming into contact with poultry.   

HPAI is a highly contagious virus that spreads easily among birds through nasal and eye secretions, as well as infected food, water, and manure. The virus can be spread in various ways from flock to flock, including by wild birds during migratory season, through contact with infected poultry, by equipment, and on the clothing and shoes of caretakers. Wild birds can carry the virus without becoming sick, while domesticated birds can become very sick and die.  

What are the clinical signs of HPAI in birds?

Symptoms of HPAI in poultry include: a decrease in water consumption; lack of energy and appetite; decreased egg production or soft-shelled, misshapen eggs; nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing; incoordination; and diarrhea. HPAI can also cause sudden death in birds even if they aren’t showing any other symptoms. HPAI can survive for weeks in contaminated environments.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Detected in Dawson County

(North Platte, Neb.) — Work has resumed from reference post 125.64 to reference post 132.89, Ogallala to Roscoe, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

W.W. Clyde of Englewood, Colorado, is the contractor for this project. Temporary ramp construction, street lighting, concrete paving in the new Ogallala westbound rest-area, and installation of traffic control items will be performed.  Traffic will be maintained with lane closures in both directions and a 12-foot width restriction will be in effect.  Anticipated project completion is fall 2026. 

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system, and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.

Construction resumes on I-80, Ogallala to Roscoe

&nbsp;(Gothenburg, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol located the suspect of a Denver homicide and found a passenger suffering a medical emergency this morning in Dawson County. The suspect was considered armed and dangerous.

NSP was informed this morning that a person wanted in connection with a homicide in Denver was believed to be traveling in a Nissan Rogue on Interstate 80 near Gothenburg. At approximately 9:25 a.m., a trooper located the vehicle and began a pursuit. The suspect refused to stop and fled northbound into Gothenburg.

The pursuit continued for approximately 25 minutes on county roads in Dawson County before stop sticks were successfully deployed, bringing the vehicle to a stop in the ditch on Highway 30 just east of Gothenburg. The driver and passenger refused to exit the vehicle and crisis negotiators responded to the scene.

After numerous attempts to make contact, troopers observed the female passenger to be having what appeared to be a medical emergency. Troopers and deputies quickly approached the vehicle and removed both the driver and the passenger, who were both non-responsive.

Narcan was administered to both the driver and the passenger. The female passenger was transported to Gothenburg Health Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The male driver, identified as Augustine Vega, 36, of Colorado Springs, was flown to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, where he remains at this time.

No law enforcement officers discharged their weapons during this incident. Officers did locate at least one firearm inside the vehicle. The South Central Area Law Enforcement Services (SCALES) task force has been asked to investigate the incident. The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Gothenburg Police Department, Cozad Police Department, Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department, Dawson County Attorney, and LifeNet helicopter all assisted in this response.

NSP is coordinating with the Denver Police Department on the ongoing homicide investigation.

Groups of educators, law enforcement officers and first responders from across Nebraska are joining the Nebraska Department of Education’s School Safety staff for a series of specialized trainings from the “I Love U Guys” Foundation at three different sites.

NDE staff will help schools in developing safe school communities during emergency situations by putting Standard Reunification Method (SRM) into a practical exercise. The SRM-Reunification Exercises (SRM-REx) will be giving school communities and their surrounding partners the opportunity to practice how to reunite children with their families during mock emergency incidents.

The one-day training will include in person, hands-on simulated emergency events at three locations across Nebraska. The exercises will be from 8am to 4:30pm at the following the locations:

The purpose behind this training is to bring together a variety of different partners, agencies, and school personnel so everyone can work together more efficiently during a real emergency.

“Parents practice reunification daily with their children when they pick them up from school,” said NDE School Safety and Security Director Jay Martin. “However, during emergencies more people and challenges come into play leading to chaos if it is not practiced. These events are meant to reduce the potential of chaos and be as prepared as possible for an emergency.”

The events will also emphasize key components to avoiding emergency situations all together such as having Threat Assessment Teams at every school and using reporting services like Safe2HelpNE, a system designed for students, staff, and parents to anonymously report concerning behavior which could impact the safety of students or schools across Nebraska.

The Nebraska Department of Education is Hosting “I Love U Guys” School Safety Reunification Exercises 

(North Platte, Nebraska) – In the spring, the hearts of the Nebraska Greater Prairie&nbsp; Chickens turn toward love. To successfully attract a female mate, the male Prairie Chickens must&nbsp; impress them with their dancing prowess. Males will gather in large numbers on dancing grounds known as leks. They will cackle, jump, and stomp their feet, sometimes scuffling with a rival. Then they will&nbsp; scrunch down and inflate their bright orange neck sacks and emit an eerie booming sound. The ladies on&nbsp; the other hand will observe the shenanigans circumspectly, examining the prospects with a critical eye.&nbsp; However, if they see something they like, they may come forward for a brief, flurried assignation.&nbsp;

Dusty Trails offers Prairie Chicken tours on select days from March 12th through April 12th. To watch&nbsp; these birds perform their dances in the largest and busiest known Prairie Chicken lek in Nebraska is&nbsp; more than amusing- it’s magical. Prairie Chickens Put on a Show Near North Platte 

(North Platte, Nebraska) – Starting now and running through mid-April, approximately one million Sandhill Cranes will spend about six weeks in the Platte River Valley on their way north to&nbsp; Canada and Siberia. 400,000 of these Sandhill Cranes will spend that time in the North Platte and Lincoln&nbsp; County area. While these incredible creatures visit, they feed in the cornfields and wet meadows by day&nbsp; in preparation for their long journey ahead, and roost in the shallow flowing waters of the Platte River at&nbsp; night. This migration event draws people from all over the globe, and it can be experienced right here in&nbsp; North Platte.&nbsp;

Dusty Trails offers Sandhill Crane Tours daily from March 11th through April 1st. There are morning and&nbsp; evening blind tours available that offer breathtaking views of the Sandhill Cranes ascending from and&nbsp; descending to the wide and shallow riverbeds of the North Platte River. Moreover, given economic activity is taxed by local&nbsp; government, it is estimated that this economic impact generates $379,000 per year in local property,&nbsp; sales, and lodging tax revenue.

While these incredible creatures visit, they feed in the cornfields and wet meadows by day&nbsp; in preparation for their long journey ahead, and roost in the shallow flowing waters of the Platte River at&nbsp; night.
