Broken Bow, Neb. - The National Weather Service (NWS) have completed their damage survey for Custer County after a strong storm that produced an EF-1 tornado that briefly hit the area on Tuesday.&nbsp;

According to the NWS, an isolated thunderstorm hit north central Nebraska in the late afternoon and swept across the region. Broken Bow was hit with a downburst that impacted a commercial building, where the roof was torn off and thrown to the south impacting power lines and neighboring buildings. Many trees were damaged in the community. Wind speeds reached anywhere from 65 mph to 95 mph. Hail damage occurred and was noted in the report.&nbsp;

An EF-1 Tornado was briefly seen on the far western side of Broken Bow but only contacted land for about two seconds, according to the NWS survey. During the brief time, an 800-pound trailer was thrown in an adjacent vehicle. The tornado was witnessed by a storm spotter and caught on surveillance camera.&nbsp;

NWS reports there were no injuries or fatalities from this storm. Wind speeds reached anywhere from 86mph to 110 mph.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– The Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory (GSL) Open House will celebrate its 25th anniversary on August 21 in the heart of the Sandhills near Whitman, Nebraska. 

The open house encourages all to attend at no cost for the latest updates in the beef industry and current research. 

The open house will begin at 8 a.m. MDT and offer some hybrid sessions throughout the day for those unable to attend in person. A complimentary lunch will be provided to those in attendance. 

The event will give ranchers the latest cattle market updates, interactive sessions, panel discussions, research updates, and more. Researchers and experts will cover various points including range management, heat stress, fly control, and yearling systems among other topics.

The 25th anniversary of the GSL Open House celebrates many years of dedicated research at the ranch that has strengthened and innovated the practices used by ranchers today. To recognize this anniversary, a panel will reflect on how GSL got to where it is today and honor alumni of the ranch.

The Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory is in the Nebraska Sandhills and lies in Grant, Hooker, and Cherry counties. The former Rafter C Ranch was leased by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln from the University of Nebraska Foundation in 1981 to serve as a hub for research in the Sandhills. 

With the use of ranch economics in different areas of research, GSL plays a key role in developing plant and animal production systems for the Sandhills of Nebraska that are environmentally and economically sustainable. The open house allows GSL to share this research with locals in the area and across the state.

Ogallala, Neb. - The City of Ogallala will chlorinate the city water supply next week as part of a maintenance routine. The routine will begin Monday, July 22nd and will continue through Friday, July 26th. The city says there might be a slight taste or odor.

(Audio) North Platte City Council Meeting, July 16th recap

Lexington, Neb. - A man is facing numerous charges including Attempted Murder after attacking a man with a knife Tuesday afternoon according to officials.&nbsp;

According to the Lexington Police Department (LDP), on Tuesday, July 16th around 4:00pm, officers responded to a call that an man was assaulted. Upon arrival, officers determined the 39-year-old was assaulted.&nbsp;

The suspect, identified as Ebeer Deres Gamolier, fled the scene on a bicycle but was later apprehended by police. Deres Gamolier is believed to be in his early 20's.&nbsp;

Witnessess of the incident reported to police that the suspect had placed a knife to the victims throat and tried to cut his throat. The victim placed his hand over the knife and received serious injuries to his hand.&nbsp;

The 39-year-old victim was transported to Lexington Regional Hospital to receive treatment.&nbsp;

Ebeer Deres Gamolier was booked into the Dawson County Jail and is facing numerous charges including Attempted Murder, Use Of A Weapon to Commit a Felony and Terroristic Threats.&nbsp;

The LPD says the investigation is ongoing.&nbsp;

The Dundy County Sheriff's Office have identified the driver of the semi-truck as Matthew Drinkwalter, 46 of Midwest Wyoming and the passenger has been identified as Steven Drinkwalter, 61 from Casper Wyoming.

Dundy County - One person is dead and one person injured after a semi-truck was struck by a BNSF train in Dundy County Tuesday afternoon according to officials.

According to the Dundy County Sheriff's Office (DCSO), On Tuesday, July 16th, around 2:45pm (MT), dispatch received a call of a train striking a semi-truck near Highway 34, mile marker 2. The semi was occupied by two males, both from Wyoming. The occupants were ejected from the vehicle.&nbsp;

DCSO states both occupants were transported to Wray Colorado Hospital for treatment. The driver of the truck was flown to a different hospital for further care. The passenger of the semi-truck was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Assisting the DCSO on scene was the Haigler Fire Department, Benkelman Fire Department, Red Willow Western Fire Department, Benkelman EMS, Wray EMS, The Dundy County Roads Superintendent and The Dundy County Clark.

The event is a free will donation, and all proceeds will help fund the North Platte - Lincoln County programming for K-12th grade youth, teaching leadership, life, social and job readiness skills.&nbsp;

Food will be on scene as Rowdy Rott BBQ will be on location and 10% of their proceeds will raised during the event will be donated to the Banisters.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: July 17th, 2024

Lincoln (July 16, 2024)— The opening weekend of the 2024 Cornhusker State Games wrapped up Sunday, with 36 sports taking place at venues in and around Columbus, Fremont, Grand Island, Lincoln, North Platte, Omaha, and several other communities.

A memorable performance Saturday came from Sun Valley Lanes &amp; Games where 17 year-old bowler Brennan Heck rolled a 300 game followed by a 298.&nbsp;His 779 series powered his team to a gold medal in adult-youth doubles. Heck, a senior-to-be at Papillion La Vista South High School, is the reigning Nebraska state high school individual champion.

Weeping Water Gun club played host to five-time Olympian John McNally and 23 other competitors in CSG Pistol Shooting Saturday. McNally, 68, who currently resides in Dallas, masterfully showcased his skills, winning gold medals in&nbsp;Standard Pistol, Centerfire Pistol, and his specialty, Olympic Rapidfire Pistol.&nbsp;McNally’s Olympic run ran from 1984 (Los Angeles) to 2000 (Sidney). His highest finish was 5th in 1992 (Atlanta).

Several youth swimmers amassed high medal counts in the CSG Swimming competition at the Dillon Family Aquatics Center inside the Fremont Family YMCA.&nbsp;Ten year-olds Elise Schnee of Lincoln and James Reed of Omaha each won eight gold medals. Reed also collected two silvers. Cady Spence, 12, of Omaha won seven gold medals, to go with one silver and one bronze.&nbsp;&nbsp;With 313 swimmers, including 250 youths and 63 masters, this was the CSG’s largest swim meet in 10 years.

Mitzi Filips and Scott Stopak took the coed gold medal in Adventure Race, which was held in Grand Island for the first time.&nbsp;The Omaha duo were also the overall winners, finding 39 checkpoints in 3:53:35. Former Lincoln Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister and current Lancaster County Deputy Sheriff Ben Houchin, long-time Adventure Race teammates, found 33 checkpoints in just over four hours, good enough for the male two-person bronze medal.

Pickleball, held at Woods Tennis Center, attracted a record 398 players, including Micah Ward from Lawrence, KS, who took the gold medal in men’s 4.5/5.0 singles and teamed up with Hunter Nelson, Lincoln, to win another gold in the top men’s doubles division.&nbsp;Not to be outdone, Laurel Derry of Blair also won two golds, one in women’s 4.0 with Shawn Hamilton from South Bend, and one in mixed doubles 4.5/5.0 with Mattew Reinig of Omaha. Meredith Starr of Omaha took the gold in the top women’s singles division.

Anthony McDill, 30, of Omaha, was the overall champion of the CSG Triathlon, with a time of 55:34. Samantha Scheffler, 42, of Hancock, IA, the top female overall, came in at 1:10:55. The Triathlon, which took place at Mallard Landing in Valley, attracted 173 participants, its largest turnout since 2019.

The Hot Sheets: July 16th, 2024

Nebraska Department of Transportation

July 15, 2024 (North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin July 22 on I-80, from reference post 125.64 to reference post 132.89, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

W.W. Clyde &amp; Co. of Englewood, Colo. is the contractor for the Interstate 80 (I-80) reconstruction project from Ogallala to Roscoe. Work includes new concrete pavement, culvert extensions, grading, seeding, lighting, guardrail and rest area concrete pavement. Traffic will be maintained with lane closures and a 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Fall 2026.

Paulsen, Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for the Ogallala Westbound Rest Area project. Work includes a new rest area building, car and expanded truck parking, landscaping, and lighting. The existing rest area will close mid-July 2024. Anticipated completion is Spring 2026.

The purpose of these projects is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

“And after that, one of the commissioners who said in the past that this will never get done, actually came up to us and he said, ‘if we don’t get the Cowboy Trail done, I think we’re really going to regret it.’ And the other commissioners next to him reached over and checked his temperature, because he was the same one who had said, ‘no, this is a waste of money,’” Helmbrecht said.

Game and Parks secured a grant to develop the 26-mile stretch from Chadron to Rushville, but it ended up only covering bridge development, Duryea said. They applied for and got a&nbsp;<a href="https://outdoornebraska.gov/about/press-events/news/commissioners-approve-2024-2025-waterfowl-recommendations/" target="_blank">grant through the Nebraska Department of Transportation</a>&nbsp;to surface the trail segment. Game and Parks just hired consultants, Duryea said.

The Chadron-based group also is working on a new connector rail-trail that will bring the Cowboy Trail – which will actually end 5 miles east of Chadron – into town. Game and Parks&nbsp;<a href="https://magazine.outdoornebraska.gov/2022/01/commissioners-approve-lwcf-rtp-grant-awards/" target="_blank">awarded the city of Chadron a&nbsp; $178,540 grant</a>&nbsp;in 2022 for the first phase of the connector project.&nbsp;

“It doesn’t do any good for the trail to end out in the middle of the field there,” said George Ledbetter, Northwest Nebraska Trails Association’s treasurer.

Even once the work near Chadron is complete, roughly 88 miles of trail will remain undeveloped between Valentine and Gordon.&nbsp;

Finishing it will undoubtedly be a heavy lift. It took about eight years to marshal support for and then complete the 17 miles between Gordon and Rushville. And even though Game and Parks has secured grant funding for the Rushville-to-Chadron segment, it will still take some time to finish the work on those 26 miles, especially since some of the funding is from the federal government.

“We’ve been told, don’t hold your breath on the surfacing happening anytime soon,” Helmbrecht said.

Game and Parks doesn’t appear to have any plans for finishing the missing link, which essentially exists as a natural area for wildlife.

It takes a lot of planning, effort and money to transform abandoned stretches of railroad into a safe and inviting trail, said Duryea. The real difference maker is the local community partners – groups like Cowboy Trail West and the Northwest Nebraska Trails Association.

“I mean, it’s possible,” Duryea said of the chances of completing the Cowboy Trail. “When you have a local group that supports the effort and the cities on board that are along there and all, that’s the spark that needs to happen for development to occur, in my experience anyways.”

In 2022, four Nebraska nonprofits, including Cowboy Trail West and the Northwest Nebraska Trails Association,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.railstotrails.org/trailblog/2024/may/07/american-icon-the-great-american-rail-trail-is-on-its-way-to-fulfilling-a-cross-country-vision/" target="_blank">announced they were forming the Cowboy Trail Coalition</a>&nbsp;to advocate completing the trail.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Once the Chadron-to-Rushville chunk is done, the groups plan to turn to the stretch between Valentine to Merriman, said Elwood with Cowboy Trail West. Then they will be down to one final unfinished segment between Merriman and Gordon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Helmbrecht with the Chadron group remains hopeful.&nbsp;

“I think, you know, we see all these trails on the east side of the state, and how successful they are. And then post COVID, we saw how much bicycle usage went up. I think now it’s kind of just a matter of time.”&nbsp;

Now 30 years down the road, Elwood and others want to make sure this end of the trail continues to inch forward, at hopefully an increasing rate of speed.&nbsp;

“We’ve got a lot invested in our trail … and we don’t want to see it go south on us.”

 </figure>“And after that, one of the commissioners who said in the past that this will never get done, actually came up to us and he said, ‘if we don’t get the Cowboy Trail done, I think we’re really going to regret it.’ And the other commissioners next to him reached over and checked his temperature, because he was the same one who had said, ‘no, this is a waste of money,’” Helmbrecht said.Game and Parks secured a grant to develop the 26-mile stretch from Chadron to Rushville, but it ended up only covering bridge development, Duryea said. They applied for and got a&nbsp;<a href="https://outdoornebraska.gov/about/press-events/news/commissioners-approve-2024-2025-waterfowl-recommendations/" target="_blank">grant through the Nebraska Department of Transportation</a>&nbsp;to surface the trail segment. Game and Parks just hired consultants, Duryea said.The Chadron-based group also is working on a new connector rail-trail that will bring the Cowboy Trail – which will actually end 5 miles east of Chadron – into town. Game and Parks&nbsp;<a href="https://magazine.outdoornebraska.gov/2022/01/commissioners-approve-lwcf-rtp-grant-awards/" target="_blank">awarded the city of Chadron a&nbsp; $178,540 grant</a>&nbsp;in 2022 for the first phase of the connector project.&nbsp;“It doesn’t do any good for the trail to end out in the middle of the field there,” said George Ledbetter, Northwest Nebraska Trails Association’s treasurer.<h2>‘Don’t hold your breath’</h2>Even once the work near Chadron is complete, roughly 88 miles of trail will remain undeveloped between Valentine and Gordon.&nbsp;Finishing it will undoubtedly be a heavy lift. It took about eight years to marshal support for and then complete the 17 miles between Gordon and Rushville. And even though Game and Parks has secured grant funding for the Rushville-to-Chadron segment, it will still take some time to finish the work on those 26 miles, especially since some of the funding is from the federal government.“We’ve been told, don’t hold your breath on the surfacing happening anytime soon,” Helmbrecht said.Game and Parks doesn’t appear to have any plans for finishing the missing link, which essentially exists as a natural area for wildlife.It takes a lot of planning, effort and money to transform abandoned stretches of railroad into a safe and inviting trail, said Duryea. The real difference maker is the local community partners – groups like Cowboy Trail West and the Northwest Nebraska Trails Association.“I mean, it’s possible,” Duryea said of the chances of completing the Cowboy Trail. “When you have a local group that supports the effort and the cities on board that are along there and all, that’s the spark that needs to happen for development to occur, in my experience anyways.”In 2022, four Nebraska nonprofits, including Cowboy Trail West and the Northwest Nebraska Trails Association,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.railstotrails.org/trailblog/2024/may/07/american-icon-the-great-american-rail-trail-is-on-its-way-to-fulfilling-a-cross-country-vision/" target="_blank">announced they were forming the Cowboy Trail Coalition</a>&nbsp;to advocate completing the trail.&nbsp;&nbsp;Once the Chadron-to-Rushville chunk is done, the groups plan to turn to the stretch between Valentine to Merriman, said Elwood with Cowboy Trail West. Then they will be down to one final unfinished segment between Merriman and Gordon.&nbsp;&nbsp;Helmbrecht with the Chadron group remains hopeful.&nbsp;“I think, you know, we see all these trails on the east side of the state, and how successful they are. And then post COVID, we saw how much bicycle usage went up. July 15, 2024 – Support Our Schools Nebraska volunteers will be at locations across Nebraska on Monday and Tuesday, gathering petition signatures to let Nebraskans decide the fate of using public funds to pay for private schools. Voters can find locations and times to sign the petition by visiting SupportOurSchoolsNebraska.org. 

Last year, more than 117,000 Nebraskans signed a successful referendum petition to put the repeal of a private school voucher scheme on the ballot; however, ignoring the will of the voters, State Sen. Lou Ann Linehan pushed to passage another taxpayer-funded voucher scheme to pay for private schools – the bill also denied Nebraska voters their right to vote on the voucher issue. So, Support Our Schools Nebraska is circulating a new petition this year to put the issue back on the November ballot.

“Even if you signed the petition last year, you must sign this year’s petition to put the LB1402 voucher scheme on the November ballot,” said Jenni Benson, Support Our Schools Nebraska. “We cannot allow politicians to impose this costly private school voucher scheme on taxpayers while denying Nebraskans the right to vote on the issue.”

There is substantial evidence from other states showing the harm these costly voucher programs cause public schools and taxpayers. Vouchers undermine strong public education and student opportunity. They take scarce funding from public schools—which serve 90 percent of students—and give it to private schools—institutions that can discriminate against children and that are not accountable to taxpayers.

According to the National Weather Service, North Platte Office (NWS), the heat advisory affects North Platte, McCook, Curtis, Ogallala, Imperial and more. The heat advisory began Friday afternoon.

Temperature highs are looking to hit high 90s and low 100s. For North Platte, it'll be a high of 96 degrees, while Curtis and Imperial will reach triple digits.&nbsp;

The NWS says there is a slight chance of severe weather that could hit the listening area. Scattered thunderstorms could impact the area from late afternoon into the evening.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hot temperatures mixed with humidity can cause potentially dangerous heat illnesses to occur. Stay hydrated during this time and stay in a cool area. Also wear sunscreen when outside in the heat. Never leave pets or people in a vehicle during this time of extreme heat.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

This prestigious recognition demonstrates Great Plains Health's&nbsp; continued commitment to delivering advanced stroke care to patients, following the latest&nbsp; research-based treatment guidelines.&nbsp;

Stroke ranks as the fifth leading cause of death and a major contributor to disability in the&nbsp; United States. It occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, either by a clot blocking a&nbsp; blood vessel or by a vessel rupturing. This interruption of blood and oxygen supply to a part of&nbsp; the brain results in the death of brain cells. Swift identification and treatment of stroke are&nbsp; crucial for enhancing survival rates, reducing long-term impairments, and speeding up&nbsp; recovery processes.&nbsp;

The Get With The Guidelines program harnesses the expertise of the American Heart&nbsp; Association and American Stroke Association to support hospitals across the nation. This&nbsp; initiative ensures that patient care aligns with the most current, evidence-based guidelines.&nbsp; Specifically, the Get With The Guidelines - Stroke program is designed to enhance in-hospital&nbsp; stroke care by promoting adherence to these guidelines. By doing so, it aims to minimize the&nbsp; long-term effects of stroke and potentially prevent fatalities.&nbsp;

This&nbsp; initiative ensures that patient care aligns with the most current, evidence-based guidelines.&nbsp; Specifically, the Get With The Guidelines - Stroke program is designed to enhance in-hospital&nbsp; stroke care by promoting adherence to these guidelines. By doing so, it aims to minimize the&nbsp; long-term effects of stroke and potentially prevent fatalities.&nbsp;Ivan Mitchell, Great Plains Health chief executive officer, stated, "At Great Plains Health, we&nbsp; are dedicated to improving patient care. This award reflects our team's tireless efforts to&nbsp; provide high-quality, evidence-based care to our community, ensuring that more people in&nbsp; Greater Nebraska can lead longer, healthier lives."&nbsp;“We are incredibly pleased to recognize Great Plains Health for its commitment to caring for&nbsp; patients with stroke,” said Steven Messe, M.D., volunteer chairperson of the American Heart&nbsp; Association Stroke System of Care Advisory Group and professor of neurology and director of&nbsp; fellowships of neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Participation in Get With The Guidelines is associated with improved patient outcomes, fewer&nbsp; readmissions and lower mortality rates – a win for health care systems, families and&nbsp; communities.”
