Before being selected, Keith County youth pitch their philanthropic ideas, offer a plan to implement their project, and calculate how much it will cost. Those selected receive up to $1,000 to bring their project to life.&nbsp;

Keith County Foundation beginning application period for Youth Inspired Philantrhopy Project for this year

North Platte, Nebraska – The West Central District Health Department confirmed that a mosquito pool in Lincoln County has tested positive for the West Nile Virus (WNV). The end of the summer season (August to September) is the most likely time of the year that positive West Nile samples are collected and reported. The health department is advising residents to continue to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NE DHHS), human WNV infections can follow in the wake of positive mosquito pools, with a peak around Labor Day and disappearing around mid-September.

Approximately 8 out of 10 of people infected with WNV do not experience symptoms. The remaining 2 out of 10 people may experience fever, rash, headache fatigue, and joint pain. Symptom onset is typically 3 to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. In rare cases, WNV can cause severe disease leading to possible muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis and coma. Older adults and people with compromised immune systems are at an increased risk of experiencing more severe symptoms. There is no specific treatment for WNV. Symptomatic supportive care is provided when appropriate.

West Central District Health Department recommends people protect themselves from mosquito bites by wearing lightweight protective clothing (including long-sleeved shirts and long pants) and by using an EPA registered Insect repellent.

Residents are encouraged to frequently drain containers and other standing or stagnant water around their homes to disrupt the breeding cycle of mosquitoes.

Lincoln, NE – Time is running out to turn in a truck-winning ticket from a recent Nebraska Lottery Scratch game.

One Ford F-150 truck remains to win in the Nebraska Lottery’s 2023 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game. The game has closed, and holders of winning tickets have until September 18, 2024, to claim prizes.

Sept. 11, 2024 (McCook, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin Sept. 23 on US-83, from reference post 44.76 to 55.41, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT).

Paulsen, Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. This project is part of the Super 2 Corridor from McCook to North Platte. Work starting this fall will include bridge replacement, grading and culvert extensions. The remaining work of adding passing lanes, performing bridge repair, earth shoulder construction, seeding, milling and overlaying the road with asphalt will start spring 2025.

Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions, temporary traffic signals for bridge work, and a pilot car and flaggers. Traffic will be reduced to one lane during bridge construction. NDOT is planning to utilize a phasing plan that will reduce the amount of time the lane closures will be in place by building the entire box culvert under the bridge while two-way traffic is maintained on the bridge. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place. Anticipated completion is winter 2025.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Two human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported to Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) from the nine-county health district. West Nile Virus is a disease that is spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. Nebraska has had the second highest number of West Nile cases in the country so far this year.

“This is a good reminder for everyone to continue taking preventive measures against mosquito bites,” states Sarah Minnick, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “Please be aware that mosquitoes that are present in southwest Nebraska may potentially be carrying West Nile Virus.”

Symptoms of West Nile Virus take anywhere from 3 to14 days to appear after a mosquito bite. Most people do not notice any symptoms, but about 20% of people will have a fever and possibly experience headaches, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. These symptoms usually go away in less than a week, but fatigue and weakness can last several weeks or months. Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain medications may relieve some symptoms.

In rare cases, people need to be hospitalized to receive supportive treatment after being infected with West Nile Virus. In these severe cases, West Nile Virus enters the brain and spinal cord leading to stiff neck, confusion, paralysis, coma, or death. Seek medical care right away if you notice any loss of movement, muscle tremors, or feeling disoriented or confused.

There is no specific treatment for West Nile Virus. The best way to avoid becoming sick is to take actions to prevent mosquito bites. This includes wearing insect repellent and long shirts and pants, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. After rain, check around your yard or property and turn over and drain any items that may have standing water in them. More information on West Nile Virus may be found at swhealth.ne.gov or by calling 308-345-4223, one number, two locations – McCook and Ogallala.  Of the 177 traffic contacts, 56 citations were issued. Fifteen citations were issued for speeding.  Four citations were issued for Reckless/Careless driving.  Seven people were arrested for DUI.  One minor was cited for MIP.  One arrest was made for possession of marijuana.  One person was arrested for felony possession of methamphetamine, &amp; ten fugitive warrants were served.

(Audio) 4th Annual International Bazaar set for September 28th in North Platte 

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Brad Jay Leeper, age 47, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced August 29, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for distribution of 5 grams or more of actual methamphetamine and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Senior U.S. District Judge Joseph F. Bataillon sentenced Leeper to a total of 84 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Leeper’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

Beginning in 2021, the FBI and CODE Drug Task Force opened an investigation into drug trafficking in the North Platte, Nebraska area. In June of 2022, they were able to conduct a controlled buy, set up over Facebook, involving Leeper. The buy was audio recorded and surveilled by law enforcement. Leeper was present as the passenger in the vehicle involved in the controlled buy, personally handed the meth over, and was recorded advising the total weight as 28.38 grams. Subsequent testing by the state crime lab confirmed the substance was 100% pure meth and weighed 28 grams.

Leeper was federally indicted and on January 23, 2024, law enforcement went to Leeper’s trailer home to serve the arrest warrant. Leeper was taken into custody near the front door and gave officers permission to enter his trailer to ensure no one else was present for officer safety. When officers entered the trailer, they observed, in plain view, a 9mm handgun. When asked, Leeper then consented to a complete search of his trailer which located 53 rounds of ammunition, as well as a loaded syringe with suspected meth/fentanyl, a smoking bong, a mirror with meth residue, baggies with meth residue, and additional unused syringes. &nbsp;At the time of his arrest, Leeper had three prior felony convictions out of Nebraska state courts. He was also on state probation.

This case was investigated by the CODE Task Force which is made up of law enforcement agencies throughout a 22-county area in west-central/southwest Nebraska and includes the North Platte Police Department, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office, Frontier County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI)

Leeper was present as the passenger in the vehicle involved in the controlled buy, personally handed the meth over, and was recorded advising the total weight as 28.38 grams. Subsequent testing by the state crime lab confirmed the substance was 100% pure meth and weighed 28 grams.Leeper was federally indicted and on January 23, 2024, law enforcement went to Leeper’s trailer home to serve the arrest warrant. Leeper was taken into custody near the front door and gave officers permission to enter his trailer to ensure no one else was present for officer safety. When officers entered the trailer, they observed, in plain view, a 9mm handgun. When asked, Leeper then consented to a complete search of his trailer which located 53 rounds of ammunition, as well as a loaded syringe with suspected meth/fentanyl, a smoking bong, a mirror with meth residue, baggies with meth residue, and additional unused syringes. &nbsp;At the time of his arrest, Leeper had three prior felony convictions out of Nebraska state courts. He was also on state probation.This case was investigated by the CODE Task Force which is made up of law enforcement agencies throughout a 22-county area in west-central/southwest Nebraska and includes the North Platte Police Department, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office, Frontier County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI)

The Glenn Miller Orchestra will perform Oct. 1 at the McDonald-Belton Theater on the North Platte Community College South Campus, 601 W State Farm Rd.

Beginning at 6:40 p.m., the Jazzy Knights will provide the preshow entertainment with the orchestra taking center stage at 7 p.m.

Tickets are available through the North Platte Business and Community Education office by calling (308) 535-3687. Admission is $35. There is a four-ticket limit per person. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

All are welcome following the performance to a reception in the fireplace area.

With its unique jazz sound, the Glenn Miller Orchestra is considered to be one of the greatest bands of all time.

It is the most popular and sought after big band in the world for both concert and swing dance engagements. The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring around the globe ever since.

The fact that NPCC students will be part of the performance brings the orchestra full circle, as founder Glenn Miller got his musical start while in elementary school in North Platte in the early 1900s.

After his father brought home a mandolin one day, Miller promptly traded it for an old, battered horn, which he practiced every chance he got. The instrument would lead to a lifetime obsession with music for Miller, who would come to be known as the father of modern U.S. military bands.

His orchestra’s best-selling records include Miller’s theme song, “Moonlight Serenade,” and the first gold record ever made, “Chattanooga Choo Choo.”

In 1954, Miller was the subject of a partly fictionalized film biography, “The Glenn Miller Story,” starring James Stewart. Miller posthumously received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.

Pawsitive Partners Humane Society is launching the second of two Lower Income Love My Cat spay and neuter programs of 2024 - but with&nbsp;a big change.&nbsp; Love My Cat is for lower income cat owners and people helping to spay and neuter stray/unowned cats.&nbsp; 

Love My Cat addresses the cat overpopulation&nbsp;crisis affecting the cats, of course, as well as city resources&nbsp;and non-profit organizations. Paws-itive Partners' goal is to improve lives and save as many animals as possible by reducing their reproduction cycle.

Since 2011, Paws-itive Partners' Lower Income Love My Cat has completed 7,800 cat spays and cat neuters with veterinary clinics in North Platte and Sutherland.&nbsp; "As impressive as that number is," said Jo Mayber, Paws-itive Partners president, "There has been a decrease in people using Love My Cat.&nbsp; With new changes&nbsp;to LMC, we hope to increase numbers again and make it work for more cat owners."

Instead of the usual one-month-long&nbsp;programs, Paws-iive Partners' Lower Income Love My Cat is running from September&nbsp;3 to December 31, 2024.&nbsp; Advantages of the additional time are two-fold.&nbsp; One, this allows veterinary clinics to complete more surgeries without the hectic schedule as in the past and, two the&nbsp;longer time gives cat owners time to save money for the $45 per cat fee.&nbsp; Costs for groceries, clothing, eating out and all, have&nbsp;risen as has pet care.&nbsp;

 If a cat owner cuts back on a few non-essential items briefly they will save the $45 investment in their pet's health in no time.&nbsp;&nbsp;For those without transportation, Paws-itive Partners is offering to take the cat owner and cat to LMC veterinary appointments.&nbsp; For persons willing to trap unowned&nbsp;neighborhood cats, Paws-itive Partners has humane traps to loan.&nbsp; "With our low-cost LMC program and additional options, there shouldn't be any reason why cats are going unaltered," Mayber reminds everyone.

<a>September 5, 2024 (North Platte, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>—&nbsp;&nbsp;Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have conducted alcohol compliance checks in Lincoln County.

During the evening hours of Wednesday, September 4, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Lincoln County.

In total, 10 businesses were checked. One of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 90%. The business that failed the compliance check was Avid &amp; Candlewood Suites.

Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to minors are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor.&nbsp;This project is funded 100% by the Region II Human Services SUPTBG ($427,899.00, 6B08TIO85820-01M002) through SAMHSA, contracted through the NDHHS, Division of Behavioral Health.

Alcohol-serving businesses and employees have access to training resources through the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Responsible Beverage Server Training is a comprehensive training designed to equip staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to serve alcohol responsibly in a bar, convenience store, grocery store, or at a special even, manage difficult situations, and uphold legal and ethical standards.
