LINCOLN COUNTY — A Hershey man died early Saturday morning following a single-vehicle rollover crash on Highway 30.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 5:30 a.m. on November 29 to mile marker 167, about three miles east of Hershey. When they arrived, they found a pickup that had gone into the north ditch and rolled partially onto its side.

The driver and sole occupant, 41-year-old Johan Groenewald of Hershey, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say winter road conditions and the lack of a seatbelt are believed to be contributing factors in the crash.

The PSAs, produced by Platte Basin Time-lapse in collaboration with the Nebraska Grassland Alliance, the Nebraska Section of the Society for Range Management, and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Center for Grassland Studies, will launch this fall in anticipation of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists.

Filmed at the historic Pitzer Ranch near Ericson, the campaign showcases Nebraska’s sweeping prairies while underscoring their global significance. In the videos, Cook speaks about the value of teamwork, resilience and stewardship — qualities that connect volleyball and ranching, and that reflect Nebraska’s land-grant tradition of serving people, land and communities.

"Our grasslands define Nebraska," Cook said. "They sustain our cattle industry, they provide habitat for wildlife, and they shape the character of our state. This is about protecting something that matters deeply — for us and for the generations who will follow."

John Cook Champions Nebraska Grasslands in New PSA Campaign

McCOOK, Neb.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating an incident in which a McCook resident died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot while speaking on the phone with McCook police officers.

Monday afternoon, the McCook Police Department received a 911 call from a McCook resident reporting that he was considering self-harm. Officers responded to the location in the 600 block of West F Street.

Officers contacted the person via phone and spoke for several minutes. During the phone call, officers heard a gunshot inside the home. Officers entered the home and found the man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. There was nobody else in the house at the time of the incident.

No officers discharged their weapons during this incident. Because the death occurred during contact with law enforcement officers, the Red Willow County Attorney has requested the Nebraska State Patrol conduct the grand jury investigation.

School had already been dismissed at McCook High School, but because of the proximity to the scene, the school went into secure status during after-school practices and activities.

Floyd Clifford Coates, Jr., aka Cliff Coates, age 44, from St. Francis, Kansas, was convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime, Possession of Ammunition by a Felon and Drug User, Conspiracy to Conceal Objects with the Intent to Impair Their Availability for an Official Proceeding, and Concealing Objects with the Intent to Impair their Availability for an Official Proceeding. Coates was acquitted of other charges related to threats, and obstruction of justice.&nbsp;

Dennis Lawson, age 65, from Whiting, Iowa, was convicted of Using Threat of Physical Force Against Another with the Intent to Hinder, Delay, or Prevent the Communication to a Law Enforcement Officer and Judge of the United States of Information Relating to the Commission and Possible Commission of a Federal Offense. Lawson was acquitted of other charges relating to drugs, threats and obstruction.&nbsp;

The verdict was returned following about 2 hours of jury deliberations.

The evidence at trial showed that in Spring 2019, Coates was a member of a drug trafficking organization that funneled pounds of methamphetamine from Colorado to Strubel, Iowa, among other places, for redistribution, and that Coates possessed firearms to protect his illegal drug operation. Evidence also showed that on Easter weekend 2019, Coates had arranged a drug run to Kansas City, Missouri.

To execute the Easter weekend drug run, Coates had convinced an Iowa woman to drive from Sioux City, Iowa; meet him in Blair, Nebraska; and drive him to Kansas City, Missouri, and back. Coates decided to travel to Blair from Trenton, Nebraska, with another woman, 18-year-old Sunny Sramek. Coates and Sramek left Trenton in his wife’s white Ford Explorer to go on the trip. There is no evidence Ms. Sramek knew Coates was going to Kansas City; in fact, she told friends and family that she was going to be on a day trip to Omaha.&nbsp;

The pair made it to Blair, where Coates went into a home, but Ms. Sramek did not. Coates’s driver arrived from Sioux City and Coates said nothing of Ms. Sramek to the driver. As the driver and Coates left the home, the driver saw Ms. Sramek’s motionless body. The driver testified it looked as if Ms. Sramek had overdosed, and Coates said he had provided her methamphetamine. Coates cancelled his drug run to Kansas City and told his driver to go to the home of his brother-in-law Dennis Lawson near Whiting, Iowa, on the banks of the Missouri River. The driver testified that after they arrived at Lawson’s residence Lawson and Coates disappeared for a time, when they returned, Ms. Sramek’s body was gone. The driver also testified that she and Coates cleaned out the car, and that Lawson threatened her saying if she told anyone, “it would be her funeral.”

Later, Coates told confidants that Ms. Sramek had overdosed. He told other friends a more violent story. In both versions, however, he told people he had thrown Ms. Sramek’s body into the Missouri River to conceal evidence of his crimes. Coates was confident his efforts at concealing Ms. Sramek’s body would insulate him from accountability. He told one person “no body, no case” and asked another “you can’t get charged with murder if there is no body, can you?”

Coates’s confidence was misplaced. Law enforcement gathered a significant amount of physical evidence tying Coates to Ms. Sramek’s disappearance. Forensic analysis indicated Ms. Sramek’s DNA and a significant amount of blood were found in the white Ford Explorer. The forensic findings combined with other evidence provided the proof the jury used to convict Coates and Lawson.&nbsp;

“Sunny Sramek went missing more than six years ago,” said United States Attorney Leif Olson. “But the investigators’ dedication kept her case from going cold. Thanks to them, these two criminals now face judgment for Sunny’s disappearance. Those who believe they can escape justice through threats, cover-ups, or the passage of time will discover they are mistaken.”

“The convictions of Coates and Lawson represent years of tireless, unwavering efforts by a dedicated team of FBI personnel who never stopped looking for Sunny Sramek,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Eugene Kowel. “Despite the defendants’ best efforts to conceal involvement in her disappearance, the FBI persisted in our mission to hold these subjects accountable for their actions. We hope these convictions bring some measure of solace to Sunny’s family. The FBI will always use every tool and technique in our arsenal to seek justice for the missing and attempts to hinder those efforts will be aggressively investigated.”

Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Coates and Lawson remain in custody of the United States Marshal.

Coates faces a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment and five years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

Lawson faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

SCOTTS BLUFF COUNTY, Neb. — Authorities have confirmed that skeletal remains discovered last month at Scotts Bluff National Monument belong to Chance Englebert, the Moorcroft, Wyoming man who went missing in July 2019. After a six-year investigation involving dozens of agencies across multiple states, officials say there is no evidence his death was anything other than accidental.

According to a joint press release from the Scotts Bluff County Attorney’s Office and the Gering Police Department, hikers found what appeared to be human remains on October 10, 2025. Law enforcement responded immediately and secured the scene. Dental records and DNA testing later confirmed the remains were those of Englebert.

Experts in forensic dentistry, anthropology, archaeology, pathology, and DNA analysis — including specialists at Physicians Laboratory in Douglas County, the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, and the Center for Human Identification in Fort Worth, Texas — assisted in identifying the remains. The Douglas County Coroner’s Office determined the cause of death to be “a pattern of blunt force trauma most consistent with a rapid deceleration event including, but not limited to, a fall from height.” The death has officially been ruled accidental.

Investigators found evidence aligning with this conclusion. The release states that Englebert died as a result of a fall from a significant height at Scotts Bluff National Monument. SCOTTS BLUFF COUNTY, Neb. — Human remains discovered last month near Scotts Bluff National Monument have been confirmed Monday night through DNA testing to be those of Chance Engelbert, the Wyoming man who vanished in July 2019.

Engelbert, then 25, went missing after walking away from a family gathering in Gering. Despite years of searches, public attention, and ongoing efforts by law enforcement, no trace of him was found until October, when a person in a rural area on the north side of the monument reported finding remains and personal items.

Those items matched descriptions provided by Engelbert’s family, prompting forensic testing that has now officially identified the remains.

On Monday, Engelbert’s mother, Dawn Engelbert, issued a public statement confirming what investigators shared with her family:

“As most have already read on Facebook, unfortunately including our family before I could let them know, that the DNA confirmed that it was Chance. I was on the phone with Gering PD when it was posted. All I can say is, that this is not any type of closure to us — will just always be more questions. I am told that the State Attorney will be doing a press release Wednesday and his remains will be released to his next of kin at that time. I thank you for all the support, prayers and love! Please stay kind and careful what you post!”

Authorities have not released details regarding the cause or manner of death. Officials say additional forensic analysis is underway, and more information is expected following the State Attorney’s planned press release later this week.

Engelbert’s disappearance has remained one of the region’s most followed missing-person cases for more than six years. The confirmation of his remains answers long-standing questions about his whereabouts but leaves the circumstances of his final moments unresolved.

Remains Found Near Scotts Bluff National Monument Confirmed as Chance Engelbert

NOVEMBER 24, 2025 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp; —&nbsp; Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol conducted local alcohol compliance checks in Keith County.

During the afternoon hours of Sunday November 16, 2025, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Keith County. In total, 10 businesses were checked. Of those businesses, 8 refused to sell alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 80 percent. All of the businesses checked the minor’s ID. One of the businesses that sold were also cited for allowing a minor to sell.

The businesses included convenience stores, restaurants, bars, and liquor stores. Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor.

This project was funded (100%, $427,899.00) by the Region II Human Services Substance Use Prevention &amp; Treatment Block Grant (1B08TI088119-01) through SAMHSA, contracted through the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Behavioral Health.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kimball, Neb. — The Kimball Police Department has released details on three separate child-abuse-related arrests over the past week, outlining unrelated incidents investigated between November 15th and November 21st.

November 15:
Officers responded to a report of an assault in the 700 block of Chestnut Street. Following an investigation, police say probable cause was established to arrest 38-year-old Steven Nunley on a charge of child abuse. Officers attempted to contact Nunley at his residence, and after obtaining a search warrant, he exited the home and was taken into custody without incident. The Kimball County Sheriff’s Office assisted.

November 19:
Kimball officers responded to a report of child abuse in the 400 block of South Oak Street. A forensic interview conducted with Capstone in Gering and a joint response with DHHS led to the arrests of 31-year-old Becki Russi and 29-year-old Christopher Stewart. Russi faces three counts of child abuse; Stewart faces two. Both were arrested on scene. The Kimball County Sheriff’s Office assisted.

November 21:
Police opened an investigation involving suspected child sexual abuse material. Following the investigation, officers say they established probable cause to arrest 45-year-old Kenny Rogers. Rogers is charged under Nebraska Revised Statute 28-1803 with possession or receipt of child sexual abuse material.

In each case, the department noted that information is preliminary and may change as investigations continue. No additional details will be released to protect the integrity of the ongoing cases.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A key item on the agenda is a public hearing on a request for an in-home daycare at 1420 East 6th Street. Planning and Zoning officials will review the proposal.

During the public forum, the council will recognize Maureen Schumm for five years of service, hear an update from PeopleService Inc., and consider a request for financial support from Karen Lundquist and Jeryl Eastman after a sewage backup at 715 Valleyview Drive.

Other items include an ambulance service tiering agreement and a nuisance abatement rescission for 810 West 3rd Street. City staff will also provide updates on ongoing projects.

Ogallala City Council Meeting Preview: Daycare Proposal, Sewage Damage Request, Council Vacancy on the Agenda

SIDNEY, Neb. — Three people were taken into custody Sunday morning after Sidney Police executed a drug-related search warrant at a home on the north side of town.

Officers served the warrant around 7:30 a.m. at a residence in the 400 block of North 14th Avenue. Police say the warrant was based on information developed from recent tips about possible drug activity at the home.

Nine Sidney Police officers and one Cheyenne County Sheriff’s deputy assisted in the operation. Five people were detained during the search. Two were released at the scene, and three were transported to the Cheyenne County Jail.

The three arrested individuals face felony drug and weapons charges. Their names have not yet been released.

Police say no children were found inside the residence and no injuries were reported during the search.

The case remains active, and authorities expect to release additional information as charges are formally filed.

Five people were detained during the search. Two were released at the scene, and three were transported to the Cheyenne County Jail.The three arrested individuals face felony drug and weapons charges. Their names have not yet been released.Police say no children were found inside the residence and no injuries were reported during the search.The case remains active, and authorities expect to release additional information as charges are formally filed.

McCook&nbsp;–&nbsp;daily Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:00 pm based upon the nurse availability, at 404 West 10th Street (one block north of Arby’s).

Sixteen Contestants Proudly Represent Nebraska at Miss Alliance Pageant

ALLIANCE, Neb.&nbsp;- 16 young ladies from across the state gathered on Saturday night to compete in the Miss Alliance and Miss Alliance’s Teen pageant.&nbsp;

Crowned Miss Alliance 2026 was Olivia Vanderford, the 20-year-old daughter of Jon and Taryn Vanderford of Lincoln, NE.&nbsp; Miss Alliance’s Teen 2026 was awarded to Halle Knutson, the 16-year-old daughter of Ryan and Sara Knutson of Scottsbluff.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Your new Miss Panhandle 2026 is Addilyn Wilson, the 20-year-old daughter of Francis and Andrea Wilson of Hershey, Nebraska.&nbsp; Wilson also received 2nd&nbsp;place in the Miss Community Service competition.&nbsp; Paige Dodson, the 17-year-old daughter of Kevin and Wendy Dodson of North Platte, earned the title of Miss Panhandle’s Teen 2026.&nbsp;Dodson received the overall teen talent award, the teen community service award, and was also voted as the Teen Miss Congeniality by her peers. 

Ally Parker, the 19-year-old daughter of Jay and Jennifer Parker of Omaha, has earned the title of Miss Niobrara River 2026.&nbsp; Parker also received the award for overall Miss talent on Saturday night.&nbsp; The Miss Audience Choice winner as well as the Miss 1st&nbsp;Place Community Service awards were earned by Mara Soto of Bridgeport.&nbsp; Soto is the 18-year-old daughter of Marlana Gomez and Alex Soto.&nbsp; Olivia Terwey, the 20-year-old daughter of Trevor and Abby Terwey of Hastings, was named Miss Alliance 1st&nbsp;Runner up.

Rounding out the final awards, Emma Jensen, the 13-year-old daughter of Heather and Todd Jensen of North Platte, was named the Teen Audience Choice winner and Hannah Henton, the 27-year-old daughter of Kris and Tom O’Brien and Jason Henton of Kimball, received the Miss Congeniality prize, voted on by the contestants.&nbsp;
