Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) has received reports of two more cases of disease from insect bites - a third case of West Nile Virus (WNV) from a mosquito bite and one case of tularemia from a tick bite. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Nebraska has seen more tularemia cases than usual this fall.

“We are still seeing insect-related diseases in the health district,” explains Melissa Propp, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “It is a good idea to continue using bug spray until the first hard freeze, and use permethrin on tents and camping gear to prevent tick bites.”

SWNPHD worked with Nebraska Department of Health and Humans Services (DHHS) doing tick drags over the summer&nbsp;to help identify which ticks are living in the health district. Tick dragging is a method for collecting ticks in areas that are likely to have ticks, such as woods, tall grasses, or weeds. The most common type of tick in southwest Nebraska is the American Dog Tick.&nbsp; These ticks are known to carry Tularemia and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Tularemia is caused by a bacteria that gets into the body when someone is bitten by an infected tick. It can also be spread by contact with infected animals like rabbits or rodents. The symptoms are fever, headache, swollen glands in the armpit or groin, and skin ulcers at the site of the bite. Tularemia can be life-threatening, but most infections are treated successfully with antibiotics. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop symptoms after being bitten by a tick.

North Platte, NE – The City of North Platte has announced that it has dismissed the&nbsp; condemnation proceedings against the Pawnee Hotel, owned by HPNP, LLC. The decision&nbsp; follows productive discussions with Mr. Jay Mitchell, the owner of HPNP, LLC.&nbsp;

To ensure the safety and integrity of the historic building, the City and Mr. Mitchell have agreed to conduct a comprehensive building inspection before the end of October 2024. The inspection will assess the property’s condition and identify any necessary action on the property owner’s&nbsp; behalf, as required by the International Property Maintenance Code, 2018 Edition, as adopted&nbsp; by the City.&nbsp;

The City of North Platte values the Pawnee Hotel’s significance as a local landmark and is&nbsp; committed to progress by working collaboratively with Mr. Mitchell to preserve its historic&nbsp; character. Following the inspection, the City and property owner will develop a plan to address&nbsp; any identified issues and ensure the building’s continued viability.

78 Nebraska schools receive nearly $50,000 in grant funding from EducationQuest Foundation

OMAHA, NEBRASKA — During Fire Prevention Week (October 6-12), the American Red Cross of Nebraska reminds everyone home fires claim more lives in a typical year than all natural disasters combined. To help protect your household, test your smoke alarms each month and practice your escape plan until everyone can get out in less than two minutes.

“Fire now travels faster through homes, largely due to popular open-concept layouts and synthetic materials,” said Josh Murray, Red Cross of Nebraska spokesperson. “The sooner an alarm alerts you to a fire, the sooner you can get out. This is critical because fire experts say you may have less than two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late.”

(October 7, 2024) Lexington, Neb. – At the October 2nd meeting, Dawson Public Power District’s board learned that its irrigation customers experienced less load management than in previous years.

Of the 66 hours of possible irrigation control, Dawson PPD’s anytime option irrigation customers averaged 50 hours of irrigation load management for the 2024 growing season. Most irrigation customers subscribe to the anytime rate, which means they allow their irrigation well to be shut off at any time and on any day of the week. By working together, Dawson PPD and its irrigation customers help keep overall wholesale power costs low.

Dawson PPD’s electrical grid peaked in demand at 209 megawatts in 2024. In 2023, it was 252 MW.

“At Dawson PPD, we take a unique approach to our irrigation load management to benefit our customers,” said Cole Brodine, Manager of Engineering. “Our Board votes on a certain load threshold at the beginning of the irrigation year. This number is determined by historical data and wholesale power costs. When electrical use increases on a summer control day, we slowly shut off irrigation wells to keep Dawson PPD’s overall electrical demand under the threshold. As electrical usage decreases in the evening, we start to slowly turn irrigation wells back on to allow load up to the threshold or until our wholesale provider, Nebraska Public Power District, cancels load management for the day.”

Safety and Loss Prevention Coordinator Dean Kunkee provided a summary of Dawson PPD’s Loss Analysis for 2023. Animals and birds caused about $42,800 in damage to the District’s substations in 2023.

 <li>State Senators Teresa Ibach and Mike Jacobson spoke with Dawson PPD Board Members about the special session and current issues, and requested feedback from the board on issues they feel need to be addressed.</li><li>Dawson PPD’s revenue is 3% under budget and 6% less than last year. Total operating costs are 4% under budget and 3% less than last year. Net Margin is $388K under budget.</li><li>The Board reviewed the preliminary 2025 budget, which is subject to change. They plan to vote on the final budget at the November 6 Board Meeting.</li><li>Operations Manager Jeremy Kaiser updated the Board on the restoration process of the September 25 power line and structure loss caused by a helicopter. The helicopter operator was spraying phragmites in the Platte River near Darr Road and Interstate 80 when it contacted the transmission power lines strung over the river. The impact caused the transmission lines and its poles to fall from the river, across Darr Road, and over the Interstate. More than 1,000 meters were without power for about 2 hours. Power has been rerouted to customers by nearby substations. Dawson PPD is gathering necessary replacement materials and coordinating with the State of Nebraska to re-string the power lines over Interstate 80.&nbsp;</li><li>Pad mount transformers ordered in 2021 are starting to arrive. They had been delayed by supply chain and quality control issues.</li><li>Board members Brad Brodine and Dan Muhlbach, and employees Gwen Kautz and Cole Brodine attended the Nebraska Generation &amp; Transmission Board Meeting September 11-12.</li><li>General Manager Gwen Kautz attended the Nebraska Rural Electric Association Manager’s Meeting and Legal Seminar September 17-18. The Legal Seminar focused on public meeting and information basics to ensure that all public power districts understand their obligations.</li><li>Kautz also reported on the status of contract negotiations with NPPD and general information about a bid submitted to The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District about purchasing 20 MW of hydropower from Jeffrey Hydro.</li><li>Board member Brad Brodine attended the September Safety Meeting on September 18. He reported that he was impressed with employees conducting themselves during the Pole Top Rescue and Fire Extinguisher Trainings.</li><li>Board members Pat Hecox, Page Peterson and Roger White attended the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Region 7 Meeting September 24-26. The board members reported information gained at the meetings and breakout sessions.</li>

The Hot Sheets: October 4th, 2024

Scottsbluff, Neb. — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested three people following a pursuit in Cheyenne County.

This morning, at approximately 1:05 a.m., a trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a silver 2007 Buick Lucerne at the intersection of Old Post Road and Silverberg Drive in Sidney, Nebraska. The vehicle fled the scene, and the Trooper initiated a pursuit. The vehicle proceeded eastbound on I-80 reaching speeds of 130 miles per hour.

During the pursuit, the vehicle utilized the median to turn around and eventually exited I-80 into Sidney. Another trooper deployed stop sticks, but the vehicle continued fleeing. A trooper then successfully performed a tactical vehicle intervention to bring the vehicle to a stop in a ditch near the intersection of L17J and Old Post Road.

Troopers smelled smoke and all three occupants of the Buick exited the vehicle and were taken into custody. Shortly after, the vehicle caught fire. During the fire, troopers heard live ammunition popping inside the vehicle. The fire also spread to the field to the east, north of the Walmart area. The Sidney Police Department and Sidney Fire Department responded, and the fire was extinguished.

All occupants were arrested for drug and weapons charges. The driver, John Harmon, 32, of Sterling, Colorado, was arrested for flight to avoid (felony) and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. Passenger Kyrie Riggle, 38, of Sterling, Colorado, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (meth). The second passenger, Dakota Schrecengost, 22, of Sterling, Colorado, was arrested for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and had a warrant.

“Movie on the Field” Returns for a Night of Community Fun and Entertainment

North Platte, Neb – Great Plains Health has joined the annual&nbsp; "Mammos for the Masses" campaign this October, organized by the Nebraska Cancer&nbsp; Coalition (NC2), as part of a statewide effort to promote regular breast cancer&nbsp; screenings and early detection. This initiative encourages women across Nebraska to&nbsp; prioritize their health by scheduling mammograms and understanding their personal risk&nbsp; factors.&nbsp;

Dr. Todd E. Hlavaty, who has served as Radiation Oncologist for the Callahan Cancer&nbsp; Center for the last 28 years and serves on the board of directors for the Nebraska&nbsp; Cancer Coalition, emphasized the importance of this initiative:&nbsp;

"Great Plains Health is proud to join the #MammosForTheMasses campaign," Hlavaty&nbsp; said. "Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women, and&nbsp; early detection is crucial. I cannot stress enough how vital it is for women to schedule&nbsp;&nbsp;

regular mammograms and discuss their personal risk factors with their healthcare&nbsp; providers. These screenings can detect cancer at earlier, more treatable stages and&nbsp; ultimately save lives. Don't postpone this important conversation with your doctor. Your&nbsp; health is too important to wait."&nbsp;

Breast cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the&nbsp; U.S. and is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Nebraska. Regular&nbsp; mammograms are proven to reduce breast cancer mortality by nearly 40%, making&nbsp; early detection a critical factor in improving outcomes. While breast cancer is most often&nbsp; found in women aged 55 and older, it's recommended that women start screenings as&nbsp; early as age 40.&nbsp;

Several factors contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer, such as family history,&nbsp; genetic mutations like BRCA1 and BRCA2, dense breast tissue, early onset of&nbsp;

menstruation, and late menopause. Women who have received radiation therapy before&nbsp; the age of 30 are also at a higher risk. For women aged 40 to 74, screenings every two&nbsp; years are strongly recommended to ensure early detection and improve outcomes.&nbsp;

"Regular mammograms and awareness of personal risk factors are essential in the fight&nbsp; against breast cancer," said NC2 executive director, Laura Schabloske. "Women are&nbsp; encouraged to consult with their healthcare providers to determine the appropriate age&nbsp; to begin screenings and how frequently to continue them."&nbsp;

As a reminder, Great Plains Health offers an ongoing Breast Cancer Support Group.&nbsp; The group meets every third Thursday of the month from 6 to 7 p.m. in Conference&nbsp; Room A at 601 W. Leota Street, North Platte. This group is open to any women&nbsp; diagnosed with breast cancer seeking encouragement and support. No registration is&nbsp; required. Great Plains HealthNorth Platte, Neb – Great Plains Health has joined the annual&nbsp; "Mammos for the Masses" campaign this October, organized by the Nebraska Cancer&nbsp; Coalition (NC2), as part of a statewide effort to promote regular breast cancer&nbsp; screenings and early detection. This initiative encourages women across Nebraska to&nbsp; prioritize their health by scheduling mammograms and understanding their personal risk&nbsp; factors.&nbsp;Dr. Todd E. Hlavaty, who has served as Radiation Oncologist for the Callahan Cancer&nbsp; Center for the last 28 years and serves on the board of directors for the Nebraska&nbsp; Cancer Coalition, emphasized the importance of this initiative:&nbsp;"Great Plains Health is proud to join the #MammosForTheMasses campaign," Hlavaty&nbsp; said. "Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women, and&nbsp; early detection is crucial. I cannot stress enough how vital it is for women to schedule&nbsp;&nbsp;regular mammograms and discuss their personal risk factors with their healthcare&nbsp; providers. These screenings can detect cancer at earlier, more treatable stages and&nbsp; ultimately save lives. Don't postpone this important conversation with your doctor. Your&nbsp; health is too important to wait."&nbsp;Breast cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the&nbsp; U.S. and is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Nebraska. Regular&nbsp; mammograms are proven to reduce breast cancer mortality by nearly 40%, making&nbsp; early detection a critical factor in improving outcomes. While breast cancer is most often&nbsp; found in women aged 55 and older, it's recommended that women start screenings as&nbsp; early as age 40.&nbsp;Several factors contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer, such as family history,&nbsp; genetic mutations like BRCA1 and BRCA2, dense breast tissue, early onset of&nbsp;menstruation, and late menopause. Women who have received radiation therapy before&nbsp; the age of 30 are also at a higher risk. For women aged 40 to 74, screenings every two&nbsp; years are strongly recommended to ensure early detection and improve outcomes.&nbsp;"Regular mammograms and awareness of personal risk factors are essential in the fight&nbsp; against breast cancer," said NC2 executive director, Laura Schabloske. Great Plains Health joins #MammosForTheMasses effort to share the message  about breast cancer screening and prevention 

&nbsp; At approximately 1 a.m. this morning, the Sidney Police Department received an agency assist request from the Nebraska State Patrol. 

The State Patrol was involved in a single vehicle pursuit and was requesting the use of a tire deflation device by the Sidney Police Department. 

As the vehicle entered city limits the vehicle lost control and crashed into a field prior to the use of the tire deflation device. The vehicle crash causing a sizable grass fire. 

The Nebraska State Patrol and the Sidney Police Department quickly took three individuals into custody and requested assistance from the Sidney Fire Department to control the fire. 

The Nebraska State Patrol is currently leading the investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Oct. 2, 2024 (Lincoln, Neb.) — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) reminds the public that is it unlawful to place any signs, including political campaign signs, within state highway and interstate right-of-way (ROW). The ROW consists of intersections, medians, entrance and exit ramps, sidewalks, ditches and lands that make up the area bordering each roadway.

NDOT maintenance crews will remove signs that are improperly placed within the state highway right of-way. These signs will be stored for a brief time and sign owners can coordinate with local district offices to reclaim removed signs.

Additional regulations governing political campaign sign placement and size may be set by each county and/or municipality. The public is advised to reference local regulations for questions regarding a specific location and to keep in mind that violation of local sign ordinances may result in a fine.

This holiday-themed, miniature-sized version of the popular summer Passport will again showcase some of the best shopping, dining, activities and holiday-ing in the state.

"We are thrilled to celebrate the upcoming holiday season with this special Passport," said Madison Johnson, Passport program coordinator. "Travelers will find so much festive fun at each of this year's destinations, and they're sure to bring home plenty of gifts and treasures from their adventures."

The 2024 Passport will again showcase 20 attractions from across the state, each with a holiday emphasis. Passporters will have from November 15, 2024 through January 7, 2025 to visit the attractions and collect their stamps.

Passports will be available at participating stops beginning in November or can be pre-ordered at&nbsp;<a href="https://visitnebraska.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=30cc1cad235a879fac111c22b&amp;id=df553fbdcd&amp;e=65d6a9d786" target="_blank">NebraskaPassport.com/holiday</a>. 2024 Nebraska Holiday Passport Stops Announced

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to get their flu shots and COVID-19 shot updates to protect against respiratory illnesses this winter. SWNPHD has seen an increase of COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks, following the late summer wave of infections seen across most of the country.

Influenza (flu) and COVID-19 are caused by viruses that are always changing. This means that as our immune systems fight off one infection, the viruses adapt to avoid being targeted again. When large numbers of people are infected at the same time as happens with flu and COVID, the viruses change more quickly. This is why researchers work to provide updated shots each year, to better protect against the more recent strains of flu and COVID-19 that are going around.

Influenza (flu) is a potentially fatal, contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. Flu vaccines make it less likely that you will get the flu; if you do get the flu, it keeps your symptoms from becoming serious, lowering the risk of needing medical care or hospitalization.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most people infected with this virus experience mild illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some people become seriously ill and need medical attention. The COVID vaccines really reduce the risk of developing severe complications, hospitalization, long COVID symptoms, or death.

Everyone ages 6 months and older are recommended to get the updated flu shots and COVID shots.&nbsp;Flu shots are available at local clinics, and COVID shots are at pharmacies and the SWNPHD offices in McCook and Ogallala.&nbsp;For those who have had a COVID shot over the summer, they will need to wait two months after their last dose before getting the 2024-2025 update.

According to the CDC, it is safe and acceptable to receive COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine during the same appointment. These are separate shots and are not combined into one shot. Check with your healthcare provider if you have questions about getting multiple vaccinations at one time.
