NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– Nebraska Extension and the Central States Center for Agricultural&nbsp; Safety and Health will offer tractor and equipment safety courses on May 28-29 in North Platte&nbsp; at the Lincoln, Logan, and McPherson County Extension office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The two-day course will help 14- and 15-year-olds earn certification through the National Safe&nbsp; Tractor and Machinery Operation Program that grants an exemption to the federal law that&nbsp; prohibits youth under 16 years of age from using certain equipment unless their parents or legal&nbsp; guardians own the farm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Certification is earned by completing the two-day course, which includes a written test and a&nbsp; driving exam.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Teens aged 14 or 15 who work on farms, or others interested in learning about safe farming&nbsp; practices, are encouraged to register for the course.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The cost of registration for the course is $60 and includes educational materials, supplies, lunch,&nbsp; and the online learning link for those who live 50 miles or more from the location.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Youth under the age of 14 are welcome to attend Day 1 of the course if accompanied by an adult&nbsp; but are not allowed to drive equipment, attend Day 2, or become certified.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The burn ban applies to a wide swath of the state to help mitigate risks associated with potential grassland fires. The border runs south along U.S. Highway 81 from the South Dakota border to Highway 92. The line then goes west to U.S. Highway 281 and runs south to the Kansas border.

Gov. Pillen Extends Burn Ban in Western, Central Nebraska

OGALLALA, Neb. (May 9, 2025)&nbsp;— As spring continues to unfold across western Nebraska, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts are flocking to Lake McConaughy—Nebraska’s largest reservoir—for prime fishing, camping, and early-season recreation.&nbsp;

Post-spawn activity has shifted walleye into deeper water, but according to recent reports, anglers are still having success. Smallmouth bass activity has been particularly strong, with excellent results recorded at two recent fishing tournaments.&nbsp;

Water conditions remain favorable heading into mid-May. The current water level at Lake McConaughy sits at 3,239.2 feet elevation, equating to 1,069,200 acre-feet, or roughly 61.3% of the reservoir’s total capacity.&nbsp;

Shower houses are now in service at several major recreation areas, including Cedar View, Arthur Bay, and Lake Ogallala. Additional facilities at Lone Eagle, Little Thunder, and Martin Bay are expected to open soon, pending water quality test results.&nbsp;

All fish cleaning stations around the lake are open for use, and docks have been installed at multiple ramps including Diver’s Bay, Martin Bay (low water), Lemoyne, Cedar View, and both north and south ramps at Lake Ogallala.&nbsp;

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds campers that&nbsp;reservation season begins May 20, and&nbsp;advance reservations are required&nbsp;for overnight stays at Lake McConaughy throughout the summer. Reservations can be made online at&nbsp;<a href="https://outdoornebraska.gov/">OutdoorNebraska.gov</a>.&nbsp;

A temporary&nbsp;campfire ban&nbsp;remains in effect for Nebraska state recreation areas in central and western parts of the state—including Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala—through&nbsp;May 10&nbsp;due to fire safety concerns.&nbsp;

The most recent water temperature reading at the dam was&nbsp;50 degrees Fahrenheit, signaling that peak fishing conditions are just around the corner.&nbsp;

Mid-Plains Community College Holds Commencement Ceremonies Today

OGALLALA, Neb. — A high-speed chase that began in Ogallala and spanned multiple counties has led to a federal prison sentence for a 20-year-old man from El Salvador. Michael Alexander Ayala-Ramirez was sentenced Wednesday to 70 months in prison for illegally possessing firearms, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Molsen.

The case unfolded last July 6, when an Ogallala police officer spotted a stolen pickup truck tied to a vehicle theft at Denver International Airport. When the officer attempted to make contact, Ayala-Ramirez — the driver — fled, sparking a high-speed chase that tore through Keith and Deuel Counties.

The chase ended near a rural farmyard in Deuel County after law enforcement successfully used stop sticks. Ayala-Ramirez and a passenger, Pablo Escobar-Alas, briefly hid under a vehicle before stealing another pickup and leading officers on a second chase. Authorities eventually stopped that vehicle as well and arrested both men.

Inside the bags they carried were four firearms, including one that had been reported stolen. A third suspect, Selvin Escobar-Rivera, fled on foot and was later arrested with another stolen handgun.

All three men had previously been deported and were in the U.S. illegally. The cases against Escobar-Alas and Escobar-Rivera are still pending.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. -&nbsp;Western Nebraska Community College is proud to announce the addition of Driver's Education courses in Sidney this summer.

The Driver's Ed course is for students ages 14-17. Students must have a valid learner's permit. The first course is scheduled for June 2-6 at the WNCC Sidney Campus. A second course is scheduled for July 7-11. The cost for the course is $200.

WNCC has secured a $10,000 grant from the Nebraska Department of Labor to provide tuition for 50 students who qualify based on household income.

Recent data from the Nebraska Department of Transportation highlighted trends for Western Nebraska and the need to expand the availability of driver's education.

"The state average for teens that take driver's education is 50%. In the Panhandle the rate is 20%," WNCC Workforce Training Director Doug Mader said. "More concerning is data that shows two of the worst counties for teen driver and passenger involved crash rates are here in western Nebraska. Working with NDOT and Panhandle Public Health District, our goal is to make a positive impact on safe driving outcomes for our region."

Lexington, Neb - At its May meeting, the Dawson Public Power District Board of Directors reviewed the district’s current bond debt and discussed preparations for the upcoming irrigation season.

The board examined bonds issued between 2016 and 2020, which carry interest rates ranging from 0.75% to 3.5%. These bonds have been instrumental in financing major infrastructure improvements. The board is also considering issuing a new bond to support future construction projects.

“The district’s history with bonding reflects sound business practices,” said new General Manager Alyssa Clemsen Roberts. “These strategies have helped maintain affordable rates while ensuring system reliability for our customers.”

As irrigation season approaches, the board voted to continue using the same load management control goal established in 2024.

Dawson County Sheriff Mark Montgomery requested the district donate labor costs to install a power line for a new law enforcement training center near Johnson Lake. The board approved a resolution to waive up to $10,000 in labor expenses. Any remaining construction costs will be billed to the sheriff’s department.

The board entered executive session to review a proposed wholesale power contract.

Under his leadership, the college completed major infrastructure repairs, deepened community ties, and expanded continuing education—highlighted by the launch of a USDA-funded meat processing curriculum and a $6 million gift to renovate NCTA’s historic barn into a student success and activity center.Bruns has served as director of WCREEC since 2016 and is nationally recognized for his expertise in beef cattle management. He taught for 20 years at the college level before joining UNL in 2014.

OGALLALA, NE — May 6, 2025 — The Big Mac Kiwanis Club of Ogallala is once again honoring loved ones and supporting the community with its annual memorial flower sale, a long-standing fundraiser that helps provide scholarships and fund local projects.

This year, the club will operate from a new location on the north side of the North Platte Opportunity Center, 121 East J Street (formerly PAKS), directly across from Culligan Water. The sale offers an array of artificial memorial flowers available for a free-will donation, with proceeds directly supporting Kiwanis community service efforts.

The flower sale will run on the following dates:

The initiative is especially unique because it is both sustainable and sentimental. The flowers sold are collected from local cemeteries after the Memorial Day period each year, then cleaned, sorted, and offered back to the community the following May. For those unable to visit the cemetery themselves, the Kiwanis Club also offers a placement service—delivering and placing flowers at selected gravesites in Ogallala in exchange for a donation.

“This project has really come full circle,” said Club President Susan McBride Krab. “It honors the memory of loved ones while continuing to give back to our town in meaningful ways.”

Ogallala, NE — In an effort to restore and expand the city’s urban forest, the Ogallala Tree Board has launched a community-wide tree planting reimbursement program, with a long-term goal of doubling Ogallala’s tree canopy over the next decade.

“The Ogallala Tree Board has a goal that over the next 10 years we want to double the canopy in Ogallala,” said Drew Krab, a member of the board. “Historically Ogallala has had a great community forest, and we're trying to build that back.”

The reimbursement program is open to all Ogallala residents and aims to encourage the planting of large, healthy trees across neighborhoods and commercial corridors alike. Krab emphasized that the program is designed to be inclusive and equitable. “We open it up to everyone,” he said. “All of our neighborhoods could stand to have more trees.”

The board has about $5,000 in available funds for the program this year and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The reimbursement is for the lesser of the cost of the tree or $150. To qualify, residents must plant a tree with a minimum trunk caliper of half an inch—roughly six feet tall or more. The application process involves submitting a simple flyer-style form along with a receipt. The tree board then verifies that the tree has been planted before submitting the reimbursement request to the city.

Applications are available at the city offices and at Adams Bank &amp; Trust, where Krab works. “The application is really a flyer,” he explained. “On one side it talks about the program and why we want to do it, and the backside is the actual application with just a few requirements.”

Beyond encouraging new growth, the board is also contending with aging trees—many over 100 years old—that have reached the end of their life cycle and pose safety concerns. “We’ve been trying to find as much money as we can to help with tree removal,” Krab noted. “Unfortunately, these older trees become a danger to the public.”

To date, the Tree Board has focused planting efforts along Ogallala’s main thoroughfares, such as Highway 30 and the city’s one-way streets. “When you see trees there, there’s a decent chance that the Tree Board facilitated that,” Krab said.

The program also receives funding through local donations and initiatives like the Big Give, and Krab said community support is vital to keeping it going.

Officials are reminding the public to be cautious around wild or unfamiliar animals, especially as warmer weather increases outdoor activity for both people and wildlife.

“Animals are out and about now that the weather is warmer, and animal moms may be very protective of new babies,” said Melissa Propp, RN, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “If you see a wild animal or an animal you don’t know, give it plenty of space and admire it from a distance. This helps keep you and the animal safe.”

Skunks are among the most common carriers of rabies in southwest Nebraska. Rabies is a fast-moving, deadly disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is typically spread through the saliva of an infected animal, most often via bites.

SWNPHD urges the public to be on the lookout for animals showing unusual or aggressive behavior. Signs of rabies in animals may include:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes that rabies is a medical emergency. Anyone who may have been exposed should immediately wash the area with soap and water and seek medical care. Quick action is critical, as rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear.

To protect against rabies, SWNPHD strongly encourages pet and livestock owners to keep animals up to date on rabies vaccinations. “Vaccination is the best way to prevent rabies exposure,” added Propp.

With growing concerns around stress, burnout, and emotional strain, SWNPHD is placing extra emphasis on self-care practices this May. These include setting boundaries, staying socially connected, practicing mindfulness, and reaching out for professional help when needed.

Throughout the month, SWNPHD will spotlight a variety of resources, including guided exercises, assessments, and webinars, to empower individuals to better understand and care for their mental health.

Mental Health Month has been observed nationally since 1949, promoting education, reducing stigma, and encouraging access to mental health support. “This month, we hope everyone in our communities takes one small step toward better mental health—whether that’s taking a self-assessment, watching a helpful video, or talking to someone,” Schmidt added.

May is Mental Health Month: SWNPHD Encourages Self-Care with Help from CredibleMind

Ogallala, NE – A new cultural chapter begins in Ogallala today as the city unveils its first-ever Western Trails Sculpture Walk, launching with a special kick-off celebration on Monday, May 5 at 5:00 PM.

Hosted in the heart of the community at Eccentric Lamb Fiber Arts (111 N Spruce Street), the event promises an engaging and artistic start to what organizers hope becomes a tourist destination. Guests can meet several of the sculpture artists behind the exhibit and participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony just outside the newly revitalized pocket park alleyway.

Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to take a self-guided tour through Ogallala’s Western Trails Creative District, where a collection of outdoor sculptures will now reside for the next year. Each installation features a QR code linking to AutoCast, a mobile platform offering in-depth insights into the sculptures and their creators.

The celebration continues at Second Chapter Brewing (203 W A Street) starting around 6:00 PM, where guests can enjoy live music by Skipping Stones, a Cinco de Mayo-themed taco bar, and further conversation with participating artists. The entire event is free and open to the public.

“This is the first year of our sculpture walk, and we’re excited to be joining five other Nebraska communities as part of SWAN—Sculpture Walk Across Nebraska,” said Molly Jeffres of Keith County Area Development (KCAD). “It’s definitely a labor of love, but it’s also part of a bigger plan for Ogallala’s downtown.”

Ogallala became a certified Western Trails Creative District in 2023, making it eligible for significant arts funding. In April, the district received a $100,000 development grant from the Nebraska Arts Council, a major step toward realizing a 10-year vision for the area. The sculpture walk is the district’s first signature project, with more planned for 2026 and 2027.

Jeffres encourages community members to get involved. “If anyone wants to be a part of the creative district’s efforts, reach out to KCAD. We’d love to include more voices as we continue shaping the future of downtown Ogallala.”

The Western Trails Sculpture Walk is made possible through collaboration between KCAD, the Ogallala SWAN Committee, the Ogallala Regional Arts Council (ORAC), and other valued community partners.
