NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The annual&nbsp;&nbsp;Bloodhounds blood drive returns to North Platte for a 22nd year&nbsp;&nbsp;Wednesday, April 16, 2025.&nbsp;

Every spring since 2004, more than 2,500 donors have rolled up&nbsp;&nbsp;a sleeve during the Bloodhounds event, for a total of 2,446 pints&nbsp;&nbsp;of blood collected so far. This drive has also recruited more than&nbsp;500 new donors since the first year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It’s no mistake that this blood drive falls during National&nbsp;&nbsp;Volunteer Month,” said Amanda Wehnes, Account Manager, for&nbsp;&nbsp;Western Nebraska. “North Platte Noon Rotary members live by&nbsp;&nbsp;the words ‘Service Above Self’ year-round. By hosting this annual blood drive, they remind the&nbsp; rest of the community to be generous volunteer donors for those depending on blood&nbsp; transfusions.”&nbsp;

All presenting donors will have the choice between a Noon Rotary t-shirt or a Red Cross t-shirt. PLUS, get a chance at scoring a $5K gift card when you come give in April. (3 winners!) Boxed&nbsp; lunches will also be provided to all donors.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Noon Rotary Club Seeks Donors for 22nd Annual Blood Drive

North Platte, Neb. - The Prairie Arts Center in North Platte has announced that their will be some fun upcoming fundraisers the PAC will be hosting. Also raffle tickets will be sold for some painted chairs with cool designs. More and more classes are being added to the website and if you have a youth, you still have time to sign up for summer classes.

North Platte, Neb. - The Lincoln County CASA is hosting its yearly Kevin Kennedy 5K Run and Kids Fun Run this Saturday at Iron Park. The 5K race is set to kickoff at 5:00pm with the Kids Fun Race scheduled for 5:45pm. Following the race, hot dogs will be served. The theme is superhero's so runners are encouraged to wear their best superhero costume. &nbsp;

Also, if anyone is interested in wearing a villain costume, the Lincoln County CASA is looking for individuals to wear villain costumes. Ogallala, Ne - The next 100+ Women Who Care Keith County will meet this Monday, April 14 at Front Street Steakhouse. Every quarter women from Keith County meet and bring $100 with them that they will eventually donate that evening to a local organization. The meeting begins at 6pm sharp (Mountain Time). This quarter the women will be hearing from "Teammates", "Outy Obsession" and "The Ogallala Tree Board"

After each of these organizations presents, the women in the room will vote on who will recieve that quarters financial donation of $100 from each woman/business in attendance. Of course that's $10,000 or more. Since its inception in 2020, the group has donated $202,225 locally.

Werner Construction, Inc., of Hastings, is the contractor for this project. Work includes milling, asphalt, overlay and widening, grading, cable guardrail, and culvert work. Traffic will be maintained with a pilot car and flaggers. A 10-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is July 2025. 

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Work will begin on N-92, east of Lemoyne 

OGALLALA, Neb. &nbsp;— The Ogallala City Council held its regular bi-monthly meeting Tuesday evening, recognizing longtime city employees, proclaiming National Library Week, April 6–12. Mayor Steven Krajewski recognized&nbsp;Jason Curtis &amp; Tracy Hood&nbsp;for 25 years of service to the City of Ogallala in the Street Department.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The city is also preparing for the city’s first-ever drone show this Fourth of July weekend.&nbsp;

In light of anticipated fire restrictions this summer, the city has opted to replace its traditional Fourth of July fireworks display with a drone show. City Administrator Kevin Wilkins said there is an estimated 95% chance a fire ban will be in place by early July, based on consultations with local fire officials.&nbsp;

“We needed to make a decision,” Wilkins said. “We’re also about $7,000 short in fundraising for a fireworks show, and the council is prepared to underwrite that if needed.”&nbsp;

Instead, the city has contracted Fantasy Drone Shows of Norfolk for a performance on Saturday, July 5. The company is scheduled to perform a show in Colorado the night before and will return through Ogallala, reducing the cost of the typically $80,000 production to $25,000. The show will take place near the Soap Box Derby Track and the Western Diamond Baseball/Softball Complex.&nbsp;

In other business, the council reviewed a funding request from the Keith County Area Housing Development Corporation regarding the former Ogallala Middle School building, and Auditorium. Vacant for several years, the property is slated for redevelopment into a 44-unit apartment complex through an adaptive reuse project.&nbsp;

The corporation is seeking $460,000 in Local Option Municipal Economic Development Act (LB840) funds to address environmental issues, including asbestos, and to begin demolition work. Wilkins said once the building is abated and cleared, it will be transferred to a private developer for construction.&nbsp;

“We’re hoping to start demolition by late summer and move toward acquisition by midwinter,” Wilkins said, adding that the projected construction timeline is about 12 months.&nbsp;

The city and housing development corporation are also pursuing historic district designation for the site as part of the revitalization effort.&nbsp;

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will accept applications for one 2025 bighorn sheep regular lottery permit beginning April 21.

A $29 nonrefundable application fee must accompany each application. Only Nebraska residents 12 years and older are eligible for the lottery. It is unlawful to submit more than one application in a calendar year for a regular lottery permit. Residents may receive only one permit in a lifetime. The permit is not transferable.

The application period begins at 1 p.m. Central time April 21 and ends Aug. 1.

Applications will be received at Game and Parks offices until 5 p.m. or, if applying at OutdoorNebraska.gov, through 11:59 p.m. CT Aug. 1.

Bighorn sheep regular lottery applications begin April 21

Registration is open for the annual Tyler Vanderheiden Memorial Run, set for May 31 at Cody Park in North Platte.

This race to raise awareness of mental health doubles as a fundraiser for Nebraska Game and Parks state park trails. It has drawn runners and walkers from all 50 states and 93 Nebraska counties, as well as two countries, in past years because of its message of hope.

Participants in the Memorial Run can run — or walk — this race in person at Cody Park,1899 US-83, or from anywhere around the globe.

The in-person event begins at 8:30 a.m. Central time, with race-day registration and packet pickup from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. at the park pavilion.

Those choosing to run virtually must register by 4 p.m. Central time May 30 and may complete their race anytime and anywhere between May 24-31.

5K, 10K, and half-marathon races are a dime a dozen. But the Vanderheiden Memorial Run offers participants the choice between a 2- or 5-mile distance.

These mileages are great for beginners, the 2-mile race being just long enough to invigorate someone on a new health journey. The 5-mile inches participants closer to a challenge goal: Entering a 10K or half-marathon.

Both distances take advantage of the relationship between physical health and mental health. Exercise releases feel-good chemicals that can improve your energy and mood, reduce stress and improve your quality of life.

This race was started by the Vanderheiden family after the loss of their son, Tyler, to suicide. In his honor, they started the memorial run in conjunction with the Platte River Fitness Series in 2020.&nbsp;

The race began with the intention of being a space for healing and support for those who struggle with mental health or know someone who has. Those who run it help break the silence on suicide awareness and ensure those who feel alone can see a community of support.

“This run unites us all by lighting a path for all who may be struggling,” said Shannon Vanderheiden, Tyler’s mom. “Join us. Run fast or slow, but with your whole heart. And share in the memory of Tyler and others who are no longer with us but, in their remembrance, can be a beacon of hope.”

This year, proceeds from the race will benefit the 1.8-mile Fort Kearny Hike-Bike Trail at Fort Kearny State Recreation Area.

This trail is part of a 13.1-mile trail system to Cottonmill Park in Kearney. The portion maintained by Fort Kearny crosses both channels of the Platte River, and its south bridge is a popular spot for viewing sandhill cranes during the spring migration. This natural spectacle brings together people from around the world, just as the memorial run does.

The meeting featured a heartfelt farewell to retiring General Manager Gwen Kautz, who served the district for 29 years, including 13 as General Manager. A round of applause filled the board room as Board President Dan Muhlbach expressed gratitude for Kautz’s dedicated service. The newly appointed General Manager, Alyssa Clemsen Roberts, joined the board and staff in recognizing Kautz's contributions.

The Board dedicated considerable time to discussing both current and future infrastructure needs and updates essential for enhancing reliability, capacity, work efficiency and safety for Dawson PPD’s customers. The North Platte Natural Resources District is pleased to report this year's successful implementation of the Nitrogen Incentive and Reduction Act Program (NiRA). The District received 25 applications, enrolling 2,647 acres and awarding over $30,000 in funds. Most of the enrolled land is intended for corn planting this spring.&nbsp;

Letters of acceptance were sent earlier this week to participating producers and landowners. Due to the program’s success, there are plans to expand funding next year, creating even greater opportunities for landowners to adopt sustainable agricultural practices.&nbsp;

The North Platte NRD remains committed to promoting responsible land management and conservation efforts. Additional details about expanded funding and future enrollment opportunities will be announced soon.&nbsp;

(North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin April 14 on U.S. Highway 183 (US-183), from reference post 72.62 to reference post 88.39, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

Vontz Paving Inc. of Hastings is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge repair, milling, asphalt overlay, earth shoulder construction and seeding. Traffic will be maintained with temporary traffic signals, flaggers, and a pilot car.  

Bridge repair work will begin April 14 at reference post 79.81. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect for the duration of the bridge repair work. The anticipated completion date for the bridge repair is May 2025. 

Upon completion of the bridge repair, construction will be suspended until August when milling and asphalt work will commence. A 10-foot width restriction will be in effect for the duration of asphalt work. Anticipated project completion is Nov. 2025. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Western Engineering Company, Inc., of Harlan, Iowa is the contractor for this project. Work includes concrete repair, milling, asphalt overlay, earth shoulder construction, seeding, rumble strips, bridge repair and permanent pavement markings. 

Traffic will be maintained with daytime lane closures and lane restrictions. Flagging and a pilot vehicle will be utilized on L-51C. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is July 2025. 

Nebraska Department of Transportation (North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin April 14 on Interstate 80 (I-80), from reference post 144.20 to reference post 150.96 and from reference post 0.00 to reference post 0.26 on Link 51-C (L-51C), according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Work includes concrete repair, milling, asphalt overlay, earth shoulder construction, seeding, rumble strips, bridge repair and permanent pavement markings. Traffic will be maintained with daytime lane closures and lane restrictions. Flagging and a pilot vehicle will be utilized on L-51C. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is July 2025. The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Work will begin on I-80 and L-51C, near Paxton 

 (North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will continue April 14 on Interstate 80 (I-80), from reference post 125.64 to reference post 132.89, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

W.W. Clyde of Englewood, Colo., is the contractor for this project. I-80 between Ogallala and Roscoe will be transitioned into two-lane, two-way traffic in the westbound lanes with a single lane in each direction on April 14. Eastbound traffic will utilize a median crossover to access the westbound lanes. 

Temporary ramps will be utilized for eastbound traffic to access Exit 126 (Ogallala/Grant). An 11-foot width restriction will be in effect and the speed limit will be reduced to 65 mph. Traffic phasing is required for the replacement of existing pavement in the eastbound lanes. The two-lane, two-way traffic is anticipated to remain in effect until late Oct. 2025.

I-80 between Ogallala and Roscoe will be transitioned into two-lane, two-way traffic in the westbound lanes with a single lane in each direction on April 14. Eastbound traffic will utilize a median crossover to access the westbound lanes. Temporary ramps will be utilized for eastbound traffic to access Exit 126 (Ogallala/Grant). An 11-foot width restriction will be in effect and the speed limit will be reduced to 65 mph. Traffic phasing is required for the replacement of existing pavement in the eastbound lanes. The two-lane, two-way traffic is anticipated to remain in effect until late Oct. 2025. The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

April 7, 2025 (Lexington, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one person after a pursuit in southern Nebraska Sunday night.

At approximately 9:00 p.m. Sunday, NSP was notified that a Ram pickup had fled an attempted traffic stop by the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office. About ten minutes later, a trooper located the vehicle as it was traveling southbound on Road 426, south of the I-80 Darr interchange.

The trooper attempted a traffic stop and the driver initially came to a stop. The driver then accelerated and fled southbound. The vehicle continued on county roads before eventually turning southbound on Highway 283. Prior to reaching Highway 6, the driver entered the driveway of a residence and fled on foot. He was quickly apprehended by the trooper and a Gosper County deputy.

The driver, identified as Gustavo Diaz Rodriquez, 39, of Morgan City, Louisiana, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, obstructing a peace officer, resisting arrest, and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was lodged in Dawson County Jail.

Lynn, of Scottsbluff, was recognized by the Governor on March 10, with a medal representing the end of the war 80 years ago. Gov. Pillen has been actively distributing the specially designed medals in ceremonies across the state, in conjunction with the Nebraska Department of Veteran’s Affairs (NDVA).

&nbsp;Lynn, and his daughter Sherri Lynn, also of Scottsbluff, were killed yesterday in a collision with another vehicle on Highway 26 near Scottsbluff.

&nbsp;“It was my privilege and an honor to have the opportunity to meet Harry and the other members of his family just a few weeks ago. It means a great deal that I was able to deliver that medal to him, and that the community was there to honor him in person. First Lady Suzanne and I extend our condolences and prayers to Harry’s family as they deal with their tremendous loss.”

LINCOLN, NEB. – “Nebraska Farm Bureau appreciates the Legislature’s thoughtful consideration of our members’ concerns about the proposed changes to the Nebraska Brand Committee’s fee structure called for in Sen. Teresa Ibach’s LB646 and her subsequent amendments.

Our organization stood in opposition to both the original bill which would have allowed feedlots to be exempt from the Livestock Brand Act, and a subsequent amendment adopted by the body which modifies the brand fee structure. While the advancement of the bill to Select File is not what we had hoped for, we remain optimistic that a reasonable solution can be reached to protect the integrity of the state’s cattle industry and the work of the Nebraska Brand Committee.

We thank Senator Tanya Storer for her leadership opposing LB646 and for standing with beef producers who believe in the need for sound Nebraska brand laws. We appreciate Senator Ibach’s recognition that changes need to be made to her proposal before it can come back for debate, and her commitment to work with Senator Storer to find a fair and balanced agreement.

We are eager to continue the dialogue to ensure that brand laws in Nebraska are both fair and effective for all producers.”
