SUTHERLAND, Neb. — The countdown is over in Sutherland as the community prepares for its 88th annual 4th of July Celebration — a four-day stretch of small-town pride, rodeo action, and family fun that draws visitors from across Nebraska.

“It’s here — whether we’re ready or not,” joked Janet Mueller of the Sutherland Rodeo Committee in an interview with the North Platte Post’s Derek Beck. “The beginning of July isn’t planning time — it’s go time.”

Festivities officially begin Tuesday, July 1 with the return of the All-Girl Toughest With The Twine roping event at 4 p.m. at the Sutherland Rodeo Grounds. Mueller said the unique event challenges female ropers to head, heel, and breakaway — showcasing serious skills.

“It’s growing every year,” Mueller said. “All you have to do is come and enjoy a fun time with your family and cheer on your favorite cowgirl.”
Admission is free, with concessions and a beer garden available.

From there, the celebration only ramps up, with action-packed days and nights leading up to the 4th.

Sutherland 4th of July Celebration Schedule

This year marks the 88th celebration and approximately the 82nd year of the Rodeo Queen competition, Mueller said. The Junior Queen contest serves as a stepping stone for young girls considering the journey to Miss Rodeo Nebraska, and Sutherland has produced more than its share of past winners.

“We see it as a function for the community,” Mueller said. “It’s not just about the number of years — it’s about bringing people in, showing them what Sutherland has to offer, and keeping our community vibrant.”

🎙️​Sutherland Gears Up for 88th Annual 4th of July Celebration 

North Platte, Neb - Mid-Plains Community College has received national recognition for a new program that has driven student success and made a meaningful difference in the community.

The college took first place and was honored with the 2025 Jenzabar Impact Award for its&nbsp;Ready-to-Work Building Construction: Homes for Heroes&nbsp;program.

“This award is a testament to how education can uplift entire communities,” said Mike Steele, MPCC Vice President of Administrative Services. “Students aren’t just learning skills—they’re building homes, hope and a better future for people right here in our region. That’s the true power of this program.”

Launched last spring at the MPCC Ogallala Community Campus, the Ready-to-Work Building Construction program was created to teach essential construction skills while helping meet the growing demand for skilled trades workers in west central Nebraska. Under the guidance of instructor Casey Craig, students built a multi-use structure as their first project.

That initial effort evolved into the&nbsp;Homes for Heroes&nbsp;initiative when the structure was purchased by The Connection, Lincoln County’s homeless shelter.

This year, Ogallala High School students worked with Craig at the MPCC Ogallala Community Campus to build a tiny house for the shelter — the first of several planned units for a new tiny home community in North Platte. The community will provide much-needed housing for area veterans and will include the multi-use structure as a gathering place for the residents.

MPCC is the first community college to receive the Jenzabar Impact Award. The award was presented at the 2025 Jenzabar Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.

Children’s Vaccination Clinics Scheduled for July

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Corn Growers Association (NeCGA) is excited to announce the establishment of the Panhandle Corn Growers Association, representing corn growers in Banner, Box Butte, Garden, Morrill, Scotts Bluff and Sioux counties. The announcement follows the acceptance of a formal request to the NeCGA Board of Directors during its board meeting on June 17th in Broken Bow.

Andy Groskopf, president of the newly founded local association, presented the letter and officially requested affiliate status. Groskopf said the Panhandle Corn Growers Association aims to unify corn growers in western Nebraska under the shared belief of advancing the corn industry through leadership, advocacy, policy development and education.

Warnar Schaneman has been selected to serve as the Panhandle representative on the NeCGA state board. In this role, Schaneman will help ensure the voice and interests of Panhandle growers are represented at the state level.

“The formation of the Panhandle Corn Growers Association is a major milestone in the continued growth of the Nebraska Corn Growers Association,” said Michael Dibbern, president of NeCGA. “Our mission has always been to serve grassroots corn farmers across the entire state, and the need for local representation in western Nebraska has never been greater. We’re excited to welcome these growers and look forward to the leadership and perspective they’ll bring to the Association.”

In alignment with NeCGA’s mission, the Panhandle Corn Growers Association is committed to hosting annual promotional and educational events and actively participating in statewide activities. Nebraska Corn Growers Association Announces Establishment of New Panhandle Association

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A South Dakota man is facing multiple felony charges after deputies in North Platte discovered a stolen vehicle and more than two pounds of methamphetamine during a traffic stop.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, deputies made contact with a confirmed stolen vehicle on June 22 at 3002 South Jeffers Street. During the investigation, they located over two pounds of methamphetamine inside the vehicle.

The driver was identified as Miguel Pena Cervantes of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was arrested and charged with theft over $5,000, a Class 2A felony, and possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, a Class 1B felony.

Sioux Falls Man Arrested in North Platte with Stolen Vehicle, Methamphetamine

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Country superstar Eric Church takes the stage tonight at the Wild West Arena, headlining the first of two nights of concerts during the Viaero Wireless Summer Jam at NEBRASKAland Days.

Church, a former CMA Entertainer of the Year, is stepping in as a last-minute replacement for Luke Bryan, who canceled due to illness. Opening acts include rising country artist Ashley Cooke and Nebraska’s own Bayker Blankenship.

The music continues Saturday night, June 28, with performances from Angie K, Cooper Alan, and headliner Bailey Zimmerman.

Gates open at 5 p.m. both nights, with opening acts scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

NEBRASKAland Days Executive Director Bob Lantis is encouraging concert goers to plan ahead and arrive early, as crowds of more than 10,000 people are expected each night.

“Beat the traffic, get here early,” Lantis said. “The last thing we want is for someone to miss a performance because they were stuck in a parking line. Give yourself time to get through the front gates.”

Lantis also reminded attendees that a clear bag policy is in place. Items such as pocket knives, firearms, or anything that could be considered a weapon are not allowed and will be confiscated at the gate.

NEBRASKAland Days runs through Saturday, June 28.

OGALLALA, Neb - The Ogallala City Council met Monday night for a wide-ranging agenda that included fireworks regulations, street improvement plans, nuisance abatement updates, and progress on a historic housing redevelopment project.

The meeting’s most anticipated item was the council's decision to lift the city’s temporary fireworks ban, following improved moisture levels in the area. City Manager Kevin Wilkins said the unanimous vote was made in coordination with the fire chief and other Keith County fire officials.

“With the rain we’ve had and what’s in the forecast, we feel confident in allowing the sale and discharge of fireworks this year,” Wilkins said during a radio interview Tuesday.

Fireworks sales and use will be permitted from June 30 through midnight on July 4. Wilkins emphasized public safety, urging residents to avoid lighting fireworks in grassy areas and to refrain from launching fireworks into the city pool—a recurring issue that has damaged equipment in previous years.

In place of the traditional aerial display, Ogallala will host a drone show on Saturday, July 5 at 10 p.m., accompanied by a synchronized soundtrack airing on local radio station Flat Rock 100.7.

Beyond fireworks, the council also discussed the city’s continued collaboration with PeopleService Inc. on water and wastewater management. While no major issues were reported, Wilkins said the city is still waiting on state funds to move forward with significant upgrades to its water treatment facility.

“It would be far more efficient for the state to release the money now so we can fix it properly, instead of putting expensive band-aids on,” Wilkins said.

Mary Wilson with the Keith County Area Development also addressed the council, highlighting regional land banking efforts and small business outreach. Ogallala economic developer Molly Jeffries made nearly 600 business contacts during the last reporting period as part of the city’s retention and expansion strategy.

On the zoning front, the council approved a historic district overlay for three former school properties, including the old high school and middle school. This designation will allow developers to pursue tax incentives and grants as part of a planned redevelopment project that includes 44 units of mixed-income housing. The project is expected to be complete by early 2027.

Additionally, 17 properties were declared nuisances as part of the city’s annual abatement program. These ranged from minor yard cleanups to more serious violations, such as unlicensed vehicles. A total of 135 properties were reviewed.

Council members also approved an engineering agreement for a major street reconstruction project downtown, with estimated costs nearing $600,000. Another proposal under review includes a new EMS ambulance barn to be located on the Ogallala Community Hospital grounds. Preliminary estimates suggest a price tag of around $1.5 million.

The council wrapped the meeting with board updates and Wilkins’ report, which again emphasized responsible fireworks usage during the upcoming holiday week.

“Be courteous, be safe, and shut it down early enough at night,” Wilkins said. “That’ll go a long way in reducing complaints.”

Ogallala City Council to Consider Fireworks Ban, Historic Landmark District at tonights meeting

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 23, 2025) — Nebraska Congressman Adrian Smith said making key tax relief provisions permanent and curbing federal spending are top priorities as lawmakers debate what President Donald Trump has dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.”

Speaking to the North Platte Post over the weekend, Smith, who represents Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District, said the sweeping economic package — formally known as the reconciliation bill — is critical for the country’s financial future.

“If we don't get our work done on this bill, that means a roughly $1,500 tax increase for your average household, and more than $5,000 for your average farming operation,” Smith said, citing figures from the American Farm Bureau.

The reconciliation process, Smith explained, allows Congress to pass budget-related legislation with a simple majority in the Senate — avoiding the usual 60-vote threshold.

“The fact of the matter is, we've gotten the bill through the House already, which I think is good. We need to get our work done,” Smith said. “Some of these tax policies are currently on the books. We want to make that permanent. We certainly don’t want taxes to go up.”

Smith pointed to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as a model of pro-growth policy that boosted wages and encouraged investment across agriculture, manufacturing, and other sectors.

“Sometimes you listen to folks in Washington and they demonize prosperity so much, you'd never realize that actually our tax code depends very heavily on prosperity,” he said. “Even with the tax cut, businesses paid more in taxes because they were making more money — and that’s a good thing.”

Smith, who was in North Platte for a series of local meetings and events, emphasized that he considers Nebraska’s agricultural economy to be on “the front lines” of the nation’s economic engine.

He also said trade policy remains a top issue, both for Nebraska producers and the Trump administration.

“Hopefully we’ll have some trade agreements come together very quickly,” Smith said. “And land the plane, so to speak, on trade policy so that we can really be poised well heading into next year.”

The Senate is expected to take up the reconciliation bill in the coming weeks.

(June 23, 2025) — Nebraska Congressman Adrian Smith said making key tax relief provisions permanent and curbing federal spending are top priorities as lawmakers debate what President Donald Trump has dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.”Speaking to the North Platte Post over the weekend, Smith, who represents Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District, said the sweeping economic package — formally known as the reconciliation bill — is critical for the country’s financial future.“If we don't get our work done on this bill, that means a roughly $1,500 tax increase for your average household, and more than $5,000 for your average farming operation,” Smith said, citing figures from the American Farm Bureau.The reconciliation process, Smith explained, allows Congress to pass budget-related legislation with a simple majority in the Senate — avoiding the usual 60-vote threshold.“The fact of the matter is, we've gotten the bill through the House already, which I think is good. We need to get our work done,” Smith said. “Some of these tax policies are currently on the books. We want to make that permanent. We certainly don’t want taxes to go up.”Smith pointed to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as a model of pro-growth policy that boosted wages and encouraged investment across agriculture, manufacturing, and other sectors.“Sometimes you listen to folks in Washington and they demonize prosperity so much, you'd never realize that actually our tax code depends very heavily on prosperity,” he said. “Even with the tax cut, businesses paid more in taxes because they were making more money — and that’s a good thing.”Smith, who was in North Platte for a series of local meetings and events, emphasized that he considers Nebraska’s agricultural economy to be on “the front lines” of the nation’s economic engine.He also said trade policy remains a top issue, both for Nebraska producers and the Trump administration.“Hopefully we’ll have some trade agreements come together very quickly,” Smith said. “And land the plane, so to speak, on trade policy so that we can really be poised well heading into next year.”The Senate is expected to take up the reconciliation bill in the coming weeks.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — June 21, 2025 — While the College National Finals Rodeo wrapped up in Wyoming this weekend, two college rodeo athletes made a splash at the professional level in Nebraska, claiming victories during the final night of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte on Saturday.

Montana State University student Piper Cordes earned her first professional win in barrel racing, clocking in at 17.32 seconds aboard her 10-year-old gelding, Fiesta. The victory was especially meaningful for the Bozeman, Montana, freshman after a challenging college rodeo season.

“It was surreal,” Cordes said. “I’m glad all the ups and downs happened because it brought me here.”

Fiesta, whose dam Rosa was a six-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier with veteran barrel racer Lisa Lockhart, thrived in the wide-open layout of North Platte’s Wild West Arena.

In the bull riding, recent Sul Ross State University graduate Gavin Mitchell of Graford, Texas, was one of just three cowboys to make a qualified ride, scoring 77.5 points on Beutler &amp; Son Rodeo’s Six Shooter. Mitchell, who holds a degree in animal science, took home more than $5,500.

“My plan A is to ride bulls, and my plan B is to make plan A work,” said Mitchell, currently ranked fourth in the PRCA permit standings.

In breakaway roping, Cedar Jandreau of Kennebec, South Dakota, claimed the title with a quick 2.5-second run—just shy of the arena record. She rode a 5-year-old gelding named Dollar, owned by her father and trained by family friend Tate Cowan. The win comes after Jandreau spent last season recovering from a car accident that left her with two broken ankles.

Nebraska was well represented in steer wrestling, where Hoyt Kraeger of Weeping Water took home top honors with a combined time of 8.2 seconds on two head. Riding a horse trained by his brother Reed, who also hazed for him during the competition, Kraeger credited his win to the support of his family and team.

“It takes a lot of help,” Kraeger said. “You can’t do it yourself, especially in steer wrestling.”

Austin Hurlburt of Norfolk, Nebraska, was named the all-around champion (tie-down roping and steer wrestling).

During Saturday’s rodeo, the 2025 Trail Boss Award was presented to Deb Cox of Mullen, Nebraska. A lifelong horse trainer and barrel racer, Cox is celebrated for her six decades of involvement in the sport and her leadership in Rodeo Bible Camps.

The Buffalo Bill Rodeo is a central feature of NebraskalandDays, which continues next week with events including a prime rib feed, pickleball tournament, and concerts featuring Luke Bryan (June 27) and Bailey Zimmerman (June 28).

BRADY, Neb. (June 18, 2025) — The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating a rollover crash that injured four people Wednesday morning on Interstate 80 in Lincoln County.

The crash occurred just before noon about five miles east of Brady. According to NSP spokesperson Cody Thomas, a westbound Ford F-150 pickup swerved into the median and rolled into the north ditch after a semi reportedly entered its lane. The semi did not stop and has not yet been located.

All four people in the pickup were injured and initially taken to the hospital in Gothenburg. They were later transferred to Omaha for additional treatment.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - The thunder of hooves and history returns to Nebraska this month as the 2025 Pony Express National Re-Ride makes its way across the state June 18–20, retracing one of the most storied mail routes in American history.

The annual 1,966-mile reenactment began in St. Joseph, Missouri, and will continue around the clock until reaching Sacramento, California. Riders carry a mochila—an iconic leather mail pouch—on horseback across eight states, passing through historic towns and landmarks just as riders did in 1860 and 1861.

In Nebraska, the ride kicks off Wednesday, June 18, at Lyman with a ceremonial handoff from Wyoming. Riders will gallop through key heritage stops including Scottsbluff National Monument, Chimney Rock, and on into central Nebraska.

Locally, the route will include events in Ogallala at Tri-Trails Park around 8:30 a.m. on June 19, celebrating the area's rich pioneer legacy tied to the Pony Express, Oregon Trail, and Texas Trail. Later, the riders will pass near North Platte and that evening, riders will pass south of Gothenburg near Midway Ranch—an important nighttime relay stop—and continue eastward toward Fort Kearny.

The original Pony Express operated only briefly—from April 1860 to October 1861—but its impact was lasting. Riders braved the elements to carry mail between Missouri and California in just 10 days, bridging vast distances before the transcontinental telegraph.

For communities like North Platte, once a vital hub on the Overland Trail and later the Union Pacific Railroad, the Pony Express symbolizes both frontier resilience and the foundations of modern communication.

This year’s ride offers a living history experience and a moment to honor the grit and courage of the young riders who helped shape the American West.

Pony Express Re-Ride to Gallop Through Central Nebraska June 18–20

NORTH PLATTE, Ne - When Tanner Drueke was a little boy, he rummaged through his dad's old rodeo gear bag, finding the remnants of Bart Drueke's bull riding career.

And that was just more fuel for the Sutherland man’s love of rodeo.

Now Drueke, age 21, is competing professionally in the PRCA and will ride at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte on June 20. He also competes in regional associations like the Nebraska State Rodeo Association (NSRA) and the Mid-States Rodeo Association (MSRA).

He rode bulls, like his dad, in high school, but he also rode bareback horses, and that’s where he found his niche.

In high school, Drueke qualified for the Nebraska State High School Finals three times, then went on to the National High School Finals Rodeo three times.

He attended Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo., rodeoing collegiately, and graduating with an associate’s degree in electrical technology.

By the time Drueke was born to Bart and Crystal, his dad had pretty much quit rodeoing, but Tanner saw the memorabilia around the house, the mementos of his dad’s rodeo career, and he loved it.

“I saw all the stuff on the wall and thought I wanted to do it,” he said.

Now, he’s working for a rancher near Paxton and rodeoing professionally. His goal is to be among the top fifteen bareback riders in the Prairie Circuit (the pro rodeos in Nebraska Kansas and Oklahoma), and compete at the Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kansas in November.

He’s sitting eighth in the Prairie Circuit right now, and has won a few checks, including a second place finish in Strong City Kan., a fourth place finish in Abbyville, Kan., and a third place in Springfield, Neb., enough to keep him on the rodeo road.

Another young bareback rider from Nebraska will compete in North Platte at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo.

Spencer DeNaeyer, Seneca, is friends and traveling partners with Drueke.

A 2022 Mullen High School graduate, he competed at the Neb. State High School Finals and at the National High School Finals Rodeo, finishing eleventh at Nationals his senior year.

DeNaeyer went to Odessa (Texas) College, earned a degree in ag business, and rodeoed for them.

Now he lives in Cheyenne, Wyo. with his fiancée Kaydence Bartlett. He broke his wrist during a ride at a rodeo in Montana last September and is just now back to riding. &nbsp;

The break, in the scaphoid bone of the wrist, is usually a “career-ender,” DeNaeyer said. It required surgery, but he’s back to competition. It hurts, but “not that bad,” he said. “Not enough to quit” rodeoing.

Like Drueke, DeNaeyer’s dad competed in rodeo, but as a saddle bronc rider. DeNaeyer rode bulls for a while and did some saddle bronc riding, but it was the bareback riding that he took to.

Getting on bulls is “pretty scary,” he said. “At least the bucking horse is trying to get away from me instead of chasing me and trying to kill me when I get off,” like a bull would, he joked.

The Buffalo Bill Rodeo attracts big-name talent, and that can be intimidating for young cowboys like Drueke and DeNaeyer, who are just getting started.

But it can also be incentive, DeNaeyer said. “It’s hard not to ‘fan-girl’ over the cowboys I’ve watched on TV since I was twelve,” he said. “But you have to snap out of it and say, I’m here to beat you now. I’m here to win. You’re not there to get autographs, you’re there to take money.”

This will be the third time for him to compete in North Platte. Two years ago, he won third place. &nbsp;

Over 450 cowboys and cowgirls will compete at this year’s Buffalo Bill Rodeo, in eight events: bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and bull riding.

Performances start at 7:30 pm June 18-21. Slack, the extra competition that doesn’t fit into the evening performances, is at 8 am on Jun 18-19.

Tickets range in price from $11-$24 and can be purchased online at NebraskalandDays.com, at the NebraskalandDays office, and at the gate.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 16, 2025) — A Wyoming man is facing multiple charges after leading law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit across Lincoln County early Monday morning.

Brandon Isaacson, 44, of Rock Springs, Wyoming, has been charged in Lincoln County Court with operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest and criminal mischief. Additional charges may be pending.

According to an arrest affidavit, a Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy clocked Isaacson’s black pickup truck traveling at 101 mph near Highway 30 and West County Road in Sutherland—at one point reaching that speed in a 40 mph zone.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop at Highway 30 and O’Fallon Road, but the vehicle sped away again, reaching speeds over 100 mph before turning onto Front Road.

The pursuit continued east, where Isaacson reportedly passed a semi and hit 80 mph at the Birdwood overpass between Hershey and North Platte. Authorities say he lost control navigating a curve and drove into a ditch between Front Road and Kovanda Road, near Bailey Yard in North Platte.

Isaacson allegedly knocked over a power pole and came to rest in a residential yard. He then fled on foot but was found hiding in tall grass and arrested.
