Post News Director sat down with North Platte native and Doane University Professor Eric Stearns about his opening reception going on tonight at the Prairie Art Center of his latest ceramic work in a show titled Ra•ku.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - Eric Stearns returns to North Platte and tonight at the Prairie Art Center is his opening reception of his latest ceramic work titled Ra•ku. The event goes from 5:30pm - 7:30pm at the PAC and you can chat with Stearns at the event. Check out the latest pieces of art Stearns has done.&nbsp;

Raku is a method of quickly firing ceramic artwork. Eric removes the pieces from the kiln at 1450° F, when they're still red hot. The art is given about a minute or two to cool before placing it in a metal container with a few sheets of newspaper. The paper ignites and smokes then the container is closed.&nbsp;

The reduction atmosphere affects the glaze colors, and the smoke turns unglazed parts of the clay black. The drastic thermal shock also produces cracking in the glaze —known as crazing since it is deliberate. The piece is removed from the container once cool and cleaned up to remove residual soot and ash, revealing the brilliant glazes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Alliance Police Department is reporting the Hostage situation at the trailer park in south Alliance has resolved with no shots fired and no injuries.&nbsp; APD released the following statement around 12:30 am MT Friday.&nbsp;

"The situation south of town has been resolved and the shelter in place has been lifted. Thank you for keeping clear of the area to allow for a safe resolution. A special thanks to Box Butte County Sheriff's Office, Scottsbluff County Sheriff's Office, Garden County Sheriff's Office, Nebraska State Patrol, Game &amp; Parks, Alliance Fire Department, and all of the dispatchers that assisted.&nbsp;

Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.

Alliance Police are still on the scene of an active situation in the trailer park just off Kansas Street in south Alliance. The area remains blocked off and residents need to stay away from this area.&nbsp;

Eagle Radio News Director Alex Benzegala reports some additional details have been released.&nbsp; According to a statement from the Alliance Police Department, the incident began with a Welfare Check to a residence at the trailer park.&nbsp; When Alliance Police arrived, a women at the home, reportedly pulled a gun on the Officers.&nbsp; The Alliance Police also report there is a hostage in the residence as of 9 pm MT .&nbsp; The Nebraska State Patrol and other Law Enforcement Officers are also on the scene.&nbsp;

The Alliance Police Department has issued an update regarding the Shelter in Place order....The city-wide shelter in place has been reduced to everyone south of Kansas St. between Cody Ave and S. Mississippi. Please stay away from the area to ensure your safety and the safety of all officers and responders working this incident. Eagle Radio News Director Alex Benzegala reports that residents of the trailer park have been evacuated and the area is blocked off by Police.&nbsp; &nbsp;Alliance Police have stressed "THIS IS NOT AN ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATION".&nbsp; &nbsp;The APD issued a CodeRed message around 6 pm Thursday evening advising residents to shelter in place until the situation has been resolved.&nbsp;

No further details are available at this time.

Update: Alliance Hostage situation resolved

Ogallala - The Pryce Gette Silent Auction &amp; Benefit Dinner is going on November 17th at the Crandall Creek Golf Club in Ogallala. The free will donation event will open the doors at 5pm mountain time with Cocktail Hour as dinner will began serving at 6pm mountain. The event will feature a sloppy joe meal, silent auction and raffle tickets.&nbsp;

8-year-old Pryce Gette was injured in a rollover car accident on Oct. 16th and is currently at the Children's Hospital in Denver. The proceeds from the fundraiser event will help cover expense costs on Gette's road to recovery. Union Pacific's famed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.up.com/up/heritage/steam/4014/index.htm">Big Boy No. 4014</a>, the world’s largest steam locomotive, will return to the rails in 2024 for a tour celebrating the railroad’s deep history and connection to communities, and its employees. The tour is expected to reach all four corners of Union Pacific’s 23-state system with anticipated stops in:

No. 4014 is the only Big Boy in operation today. Weighing in at 1.1 million pounds, it was restored in 2019 to celebrate the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.up.com/up/heritage/steam-meet/index.htm">150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad’s completion</a>. Twenty-five Big Boy locomotives were built for Union Pacific to haul heavy freight during World War II, but only eight still exist. The other seven are on display around the United States.

Proceeds support the construction of a pediatric rehab space within the new Sports and&nbsp; Therapy and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation center. Whether a child needs speech therapy,&nbsp; physical therapy, occupational therapy or all three types of therapy – this project&nbsp; provides children a space that is specific for every part of their developmental journey.&nbsp;

The gala features an exquisite dinner by North 40 Chophouse, a live auction presented&nbsp; by Rod Wright, upscale silent auction and music by Night Sounds Entertainment.&nbsp;

More than 100 pairs of socks collected for homeless shelter

On October 30th, a single engine plane crashed in the yard of a residence in the 1400 Block of East C Street in McCook, Nebraska. There were two occupants aboard the plane. The occupants were identified as pilot, Clifton Coffman age 79, who passed away from his injuries, and his passenger, Henry Ritcher age 65, who is being treated for his injuries. NTSB and FAA are investigating the crash. Both occupants were from Shreveport, Louisiana.

RED WILLOW COUNTY, Neb. —One person died in a small plane crash just before noon Monday in southwest Nebraska.

The small plane crashed 1/8 of a mile southwest of the McCook Ben Nelson Regional Airport property, according to McCook City Manager Nate Schneider.&nbsp;

There were two occupants in the airplane. First responders found one deceased, and the second occupant was transported to the Community Hospital of McCook for treatment.

City of McCook personnel were on the scene of the crash and have contacted the appropriate federal agencies.&nbsp;

Officials secured the crash site and it will be maintained until investigators from the appropriate federal agencies arrive.&nbsp; Officials have not released names of the pilot or passenger.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pilot, passenger aboard the small plane crash in McCook have been identified

&nbsp; At about noon on 11-1-23 deputies were dispatched to West Stark Rd, which is northwest of Hershey. It was reported that there was an abandoned vehicle in a pasture. Nearby residents had noticed it there earlier in the day and now had noticed and unidentified male walking in the area. They checked the vehicle and found that it was disabled in a small washout.

Deputies determined that it had been stolen from Bridge Street Auto in North Platte. The residents reported that they approached the male, but he ran into a nearby corn field. Deputies could not locate the male, so NSP was dispatched for assistance. They responded with a drone, manpower and K-9. The male was located near Birdwood Creek. He refused to comply with orders to come out of the field. Less lethal pepper balls were used and had little effect. The K-9 was deployed as a warning, but he continued to defy the orders.

As officers approached him to affect an arrest, he became physical, and the K-9 took action. In an effort to defeat the dog the suspect bit the dog on the face. The best biter prevailed, and the suspect was handcuffed and arrested. He was given medical attention for bite injuries on scene and at the hospital. The K-9 did not require medical attention. He was identified as Roman Reyes, DOB 12-27-84.

No known address. He was believed to be under the influence of drugs. He has had a lot of contact with the law in the recent past. He was charged with Theft, Possession of Stolen Property, Resisting Arrest and Harassing a Police Animal.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Man arrested near Birdword Creek

Acting United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that George Liakos, 64, of Gering, Nebraska, was sentenced on October 27, 2023, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for Bank Fraud. Senior United States District Court Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Liakos to 36 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Liakos’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release. As part of his sentence, Liakos was ordered to pay $5,059,035.43 in restitution to First State Bank.

Great Western Bank, which was subsequently acquired by First State Bank, was a banking corporation with locations in Iowa, Colorado, South&nbsp;Dakota,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Nebraska,&nbsp;including&nbsp;a&nbsp;banking&nbsp;office&nbsp;in&nbsp;Scottsbluff,&nbsp;Nebraska.&nbsp;Great&nbsp;Western Bank’s deposits were insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Liakos conducted a farming operation in Bayard, Nebraska, primarily growing beans, corn and sugar beets as well as raising cattle for sale.

Beginning in April 2017 and continuing through May 2019,&nbsp;Liakos misrepresented the amount of commodities he had in storage, cattle inventory, and acreage of crops and concealed his debt from Great Western Bank in order to secure approximately $11 million in loans.

As a part of his scheme to obtain money from Great Western Bank, on June 2, 2017, Liakos executed Loans and a Security Agreement with Great Western Bank. The loans and security agreement consisted of a revolving line of credit, machinery and equipment loan and a livestock loan. In approving the Loans and Security Agreement, Great Western Bank relied upon information provided by Liakos&nbsp;reflecting&nbsp;current&nbsp;commodity&nbsp;and&nbsp;livestock&nbsp;inventory,&nbsp;accounts&nbsp;receivable,&nbsp;loans,&nbsp;and accounts payable which he knew materially overstated his commodity inventory and materially understated and failed to report loans and accounts payable. As&nbsp;part&nbsp;of&nbsp;this&nbsp;agreement,&nbsp;Liakos&nbsp;granted&nbsp;Great&nbsp;Western&nbsp;Bank&nbsp;a&nbsp;security&nbsp;interest&nbsp;in&nbsp;assets and farm products as collateral for the loan. As a result of the Liakos’s scheme and artifice to defraud, Great Western Bank sustained a financial loss of $3,940,007.80.

After the sentencing, FBI Omaha Special Agent in Charge Eugene Kowel said, “George Liakos’ crime may not have been violent, but there were real victims.&nbsp; His years of lies and falsifying documents led to a local bank’s loss of more than seven million dollars.&nbsp; Today’s sentence illustrates the FBI’s mission to investigate complex fraud cases and bring to justice those who enrich themselves at the expense of others by breaking the law.”

Matthew T. Wilkins, Acting Special Agent-in-Charge, U.S. Department of Agriculture-Office of Inspector General said “I want to thank the US Attorney’s Office, OIG special agents, and our investigative partners for their hard work on this investigation.&nbsp; When the integrity of the United States Department of Agriculture’s farm loan programs is violated by criminal conduct, the Office of Inspector General will pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law.”

Acting United States Attorney Susan T. Lehr stated, “Today’s sentencing is the product of nearly four years of investigating and prosecuting Liakos for making material misrepresentations to the Commodity Credit Corporation and Great Western Bank to obtain significant lines of credit. By United States Attorney's OfficeActing United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that George Liakos, 64, of Gering, Nebraska, was sentenced on October 27, 2023, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for Bank Fraud. Senior United States District Court Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Liakos to 36 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Liakos’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release. As part of his sentence, Liakos was ordered to pay $5,059,035.43 in restitution to First State Bank.Great Western Bank, which was subsequently acquired by First State Bank, was a banking corporation with locations in Iowa, Colorado, South&nbsp;Dakota,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Nebraska,&nbsp;including&nbsp;a&nbsp;banking&nbsp;office&nbsp;in&nbsp;Scottsbluff,&nbsp;Nebraska.&nbsp;Great&nbsp;Western Bank’s deposits were insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Liakos conducted a farming operation in Bayard, Nebraska, primarily growing beans, corn and sugar beets as well as raising cattle for sale.Beginning in April 2017 and continuing through May 2019,&nbsp;Liakos misrepresented the amount of commodities he had in storage, cattle inventory, and acreage of crops and concealed his debt from Great Western Bank in order to secure approximately $11 million in loans.As a part of his scheme to obtain money from Great Western Bank, on June 2, 2017, Liakos executed Loans and a Security Agreement with Great Western Bank. The loans and security agreement consisted of a revolving line of credit, machinery and equipment loan and a livestock loan. In approving the Loans and Security Agreement, Great Western Bank relied upon information provided by Liakos&nbsp;reflecting&nbsp;current&nbsp;commodity&nbsp;and&nbsp;livestock&nbsp;inventory,&nbsp;accounts&nbsp;receivable,&nbsp;loans,&nbsp;and accounts payable which he knew materially overstated his commodity inventory and materially understated and failed to report loans and accounts payable. As&nbsp;part&nbsp;of&nbsp;this&nbsp;agreement,&nbsp;Liakos&nbsp;granted&nbsp;Great&nbsp;Western&nbsp;Bank&nbsp;a&nbsp;security&nbsp;interest&nbsp;in&nbsp;assets and farm products as collateral for the loan. As a result of the Liakos’s scheme and artifice to defraud, Great Western Bank sustained a financial loss of $3,940,007.80.After the sentencing, FBI Omaha Special Agent in Charge Eugene Kowel said, “George Liakos’ crime may not have been violent, but there were real victims.&nbsp; His years of lies and falsifying documents led to a local bank’s loss of more than seven million dollars.&nbsp; Today’s sentence illustrates the FBI’s mission to investigate complex fraud cases and bring to justice those who enrich themselves at the expense of others by breaking the law.”Matthew T. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Union Pacific is trimming the ranks of the railroad's management employees as part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/union-pacific-ceo-jim-vena-railroad-23365ccd844a91a7ba9d0cfd6b36fe0b">new CEO's push</a>&nbsp;to eliminate layers of bosses involved in decision making.

The railroad, based in Omaha, Nebraska, said Wednesday that it is eliminating less than 5% of its roughly 5,600 management jobs.

Everyone who is losing their job was encouraged to either apply for a job helping operate or maintain Union Pacific's trains or to stay on for several months to help tackle one of about a couple dozen special projects.

Fewer than 275 management jobs were being eliminated, but the final number of cuts will depend on how many managers take other jobs with the railroad.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/union-pacific-railroad-ceo-jim-vena-06b2fbdf515e7f5aa8d82c0b2cafbc88">CEO Jim Vena</a>&nbsp;made streamlining the organization one of his first priorities after taking the job in August.

“You can’t have nine levels from the CEO to the people who actually do the work and expect that the message is clear, the decisions are made clear and there isn’t some hiccup in the decision,” Vena&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/union-pacific-railroad-thirdquarter-earnings-0ad0474a2bbf4dc0d29c0e1c880aa101">told investors</a>&nbsp;last month. “And I want to drive it so that we have way less layers. And that means with less layers, the people out in the field are empowered to make the right decision.”

A spokeswoman for the railroad said Wednesday that the management layoffs are part of the larger effort to change its culture and “focus on empowering employees on the front lines to drive decision-making.”

Before the layoffs announced Wednesday, Union Pacific eliminated about 100 operating jobs recently in response to a decline in the number of rail shipments with the economy in flux.

But both sets of job cuts represent a relatively small part of Union Pacific's total workforce of about 33,000. The railroad is one of the nation's largest, operating more than 32,000 miles (51,499 kilometers) of track in 23 Western states.

These latest cuts are also much smaller than the ones Union Pacific made after it started overhauling its operations in 2018 to rely more on fewer, longer trains that operate on a more set schedule. Before those changes began, the railroad employed more than 44,000 people. Those bigger cuts that UP and all the major railroads made over the past six years have been criticized by labor unions who say they left the workforce spread too thin to keep up with crucial preventative maintenance and inspections. The railroads say the cuts simply helped them become more efficient and they need fewer workers today because they're using fewer locomotives and railcars to haul a similar amount of freight.

The head of the Federal Railroad Administration&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/union-pacific-railroad-safety-fra-defects-a3727942095fc3bd585b42d60c45fa6e">questioned the wisdom</a>&nbsp;of the recent cuts of train crews and maintenance personnel in a letter to Vena after federal inspectors found hundreds of problems when they visited Union Pacific's massive railyard in western Nebraska this summer.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/palestinian-territories-ohio-canada-business-accidents-d57651e17b2f9e0163c50298106950a3">Safety</a>&nbsp;has been a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-derailments-tank-car-ohio-minnesota-c60f33b64e9c7dc05768a78ae20f3ce5">concern</a>&nbsp;across the industry after a Norfolk Southern&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-pete-buttigieg-evacuations-ohio-explosions-64908a6416662b5866809387f210aee5">train derailed</a>&nbsp;in eastern Ohio in February, spilled hazardous chemicals and caught fire.

Scholarship application opens at Mid-Plains Community College

&nbsp;(SCOTTSBLUFF, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Kimball motel owner following a shooting at the motel Tuesday.

Tuesday afternoon, the Kimball Police Department was called to the report of a shooting at the Finer Motel, at 4306 East Highway 30 in Kimball. Upon arrival, authorities located a male subject with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The Kimball Police Department requested that the Nebraska State Patrol handle the investigation. After preliminary investigation, NSP has arrested the motel’s owner, Leota Kant, 86, of Kimball, for attempted murder, use of a weapon to commit a felony, and discharging a weapon within city limits. The victim had been staying at the motel.

Kant was lodged Tuesday evening in Garden County Jail. The investigation remains ongoing.

NORTH PLATTE - The Mid-Plains United Way has officially kicked off their 2023-2024 campaign. Mid-Plains United Way helps out many different agencies in the region. The 2023-2024 campaign helps support those agencies throughout the year. Also, Mid-Plains United Way is gearing up to have activities, one example is Christmas wrapping, is coming up.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) will be offering Vaccines for Children at public clinics in November.&nbsp; Anyone two months of age and older are invited to get their vaccinations. Flu shots will be offered at all clinics in November for anyone six months of age and older. Now is the perfect opportunity to get a flu shot before the flu starts circulating.

Hayes Center-Tuesday, November 7th, 4:00-5:0o pm at Hayes Center Elementary Cafeteria.

Curtis&nbsp;– Monday, November 13th, 4:30-5:30 pm at Medicine Valley High School.

Trenton –&nbsp;Tuesday, November 21st, 3:30-4:30 pm at Hitchcock County High School Library.

Ogallala&nbsp;– every Thursday weekly, 8:00 am-4:00 pm MT, walk-in’s welcome. Also 4:00-6:00 pm MT by appointment only, at 418 N Spruce (across the street from the Methodist Church).

McCook&nbsp;–&nbsp;daily Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:00 pm based upon the nurse availability, at 404 West 10th Street (one block north of Arby’s).

Other locations:&nbsp;check with your local healthcare provider or pharmacy.

We encourage those interested in vaccination to call to schedule an appointment. Clinics in November tend to be very busy. Walk-ins are welcome, but priority will be given to those with a scheduled appointment.&nbsp;

Vaccines for Children is&nbsp;funded in whole with federal and DHHS funds.&nbsp;Children with no insurance, under-insured, Medicaid, Native American or Native Alaskan qualify for state-funded vaccine. Adults who are uninsured or under-insured may also qualify for state funded vaccine. Call the office for qualifications at 308-345-4223. Both state-funded and private vaccines are available at these clinics.&nbsp; Insurance billing and cash or credit card payment options are available to those who do not qualify for the state-funded vaccine.
