NORTH PLATTE - The Salvation Army is gearing up for the holiday season and the Red Kettle Campaign started this past Monday. The Salvation Army is also preparing food box donations for Thanksgiving and Christmas, a toy drive and so much more.&nbsp;

The Red Kettle campaign is the Salvations Army biggest fundraiser event. The iconic red kettles are seen all around the United States. The Red Kettles started in North Platte this past Monday. Volunteers stand out ringing the bells in front of the kettles. North Platte will be ringing at 8 locations this holiday season. The Wreaths Across America event will be held December 16th at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. The goal of the event is to place a live, balsam fir wreath at the headstone of every Veteran buried at Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Wreaths are needed for thousands of veterans’ headstones. The cost of each wreath is $17.

Union Pacific Railroad recognized a dozen customers and suppliers with the railroad’s first ever 2023 Sustainability Partner Award. The award honors Union Pacific business partners who have demonstrated both leadership and progress toward achieving sustainability goals.

“These companies share Union Pacific’s drive and commitment to finding sustainable ways of doing business that positively impacts our communities, employees and customers, while building a more sustainable tomorrow,” said Union Pacific President Beth Whited.

The award was open to all of Union Pacific’s customers and suppliers and was based on a company’s sustainability efforts, such as the use of innovative business practices to reduce their environmental impact. Also considered was a company’s track record of engaging and collaborating effectively with key stakeholders, including communities and business partners.

The winners were honored Tuesday, Nov. 14, at an awards ceremony held at Union Pacific Center in Omaha, Nebraska, where they were given a chance to share their sustainability initiatives and projects.

“We were thrilled to spend a day with our business partners, learning about their forward-thinking initiatives and sharing ideas on how we can work together to make a difference for generations to come,” said Kenny Rocker, executive vice president – Marketing and Sales for Union Pacific Railroad.

Union Pacific Honors 12 Companies with First Ever Sustainability Partner Award

Registration is now open for winterim classes at Mid-Plains Community College.

Winterim is the period between the end of the fall term and start of the spring semester. Most classes begin Dec. 11 and end Jan. 11.

The month-long courses offer a unique opportunity to earn credits in a short amount of time and allow students to complete general education requirements over the holiday break.

The following classes are offered this year: Introduction to the Visual Arts, Personal and Professional Development, Introduction to Business, Literature of Nature, College Algebra, Music Appreciation, Walking and Jogging, Drugs and Sports, American Government, Intro to Sociology and Diversity Consciousness.

An admissions application can be found under the “apply now” tab on the college’s website:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.mpcc.edu/" target="_blank">www.mpcc.edu</a>. A course schedule can be viewed under the “academics” section of the website.

Post Sports Director Paxton Gordon chatted with former Husker volleyball player, current Omaha Supernovas Team Ambassador/Assistant Director of Fan Engagement Kenzie Maloney about the Supernovas and her role with the organization.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Omaha Supernovas are the first ever professional volleyball team in the state of Nebraska and gearing up for their first season in a brand-new professional volleyball league, the Pro Volleyball Federation. The league consists of 8 teams and the league plays a 24-game regular season. Omaha will host 12 matches at the CHI Health Center. The league's first ever match will take place at CHI Health Center on January 24th, 2024, between the Supernovas and the Atlanta Vibe at 7pm.&nbsp;

Maloney is originally from Louisville, Kentucky and spent 4 years when the Nebraska Volleyball team. During her time in Nebraska, she was a two-time national champion with the Huskers. Maloney was a four-year standout at both Libro and Defensive Specialist. She was an AVCA All-America Third Team member after her senior season in 2018.&nbsp;

For the Supernovas, Maloney is the Assistant Director of Fan Engagement for the Supernovas but also one of three Team Ambassadors alongside former Husker, Kenzie Knuckles and former Creighton Bluejay,&nbsp; Jaela Zimmerman. As a Team Ambassador, Maloney puts it&nbsp;hand in hand with her current position of Assistant Director of Fan Engagement. "It's viewed as a fan engagement position, so we (team ambassadors) do a good job of spreading the word of the Pro Volleyball Federation and letting people know what it is, where they can find tickets, where they can get involved," said Kenzie Maloney.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Holiday Auction kicks off this morning

Five members of the&nbsp;Mid-Plains Community College Shooting Club are headed to nationals. They are David Cudzilo and&nbsp;Kadan Wright, of North Platte,&nbsp;Blayzon Mooney and&nbsp;Nevayah Jones, of McCook, and&nbsp;Hoyt Dancer, of Sutherland.

The team competed in Colorado Springs, Colo. Friday through Sunday at the Fall West Coast Conference Championships, which is part of the Clay Targets Shotgun Bowl Series.

The regional competition provided an opportunity for team members to be ranked in their respective disciplines ahead of nationals. MPCC was the only two-year college in attendance. The team ended the competition sixth out of 14 schools.

Mooney was part of a six-way tie for third place in trap. He and&nbsp;Cudzilo both shot their first 25 straights in trap. Jones managed a personal record in skeet while Dancer also topped his PR in trap and sporting clays.

The team will compete March 18-23 at the&nbsp;Association of College Unions International and Scholastic Clay Target Program National Championships.

The championships bring together hundreds of athletes from across the U.S. to compete for top honors in all disciplines, including American, international and doubles events&nbsp;at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas.

The MPCC Shooting Club is raffling a&nbsp;TriStar Trinity shotgun, sponsored by the River Valley Gun Gallery and assistant shooting club coach Ellie Schad,&nbsp;to help offset the cost of entry fees and travel expenses.

Tickets are available from any shooting club member, shooting club head coach Heather Wright at Suds R Us and Schad at Lashley Land and Recreational Brokers. Both businesses are in North Platte. The drawing will be 5 p.m. Dec. 1. The winner will be notified by phone.

They are David Cudzilo and&nbsp;Kadan Wright, of North Platte,&nbsp;Blayzon Mooney and&nbsp;Nevayah Jones, of McCook, and&nbsp;Hoyt Dancer, of Sutherland.The team competed in Colorado Springs, Colo. Friday through Sunday at the Fall West Coast Conference Championships, which is part of the Clay Targets Shotgun Bowl Series.The regional competition provided an opportunity for team members to be ranked in their respective disciplines ahead of nationals. MPCC was the only two-year college in attendance. The team ended the competition sixth out of 14 schools.Mooney was part of a six-way tie for third place in trap. He and&nbsp;Cudzilo both shot their first 25 straights in trap. Jones managed a personal record in skeet while Dancer also topped his PR in trap and sporting clays.The team will compete March 18-23 at the&nbsp;Association of College Unions International and Scholastic Clay Target Program National Championships.The championships bring together hundreds of athletes from across the U.S. to compete for top honors in all disciplines, including American, international and doubles events&nbsp;at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas.The MPCC Shooting Club is raffling a&nbsp;TriStar Trinity shotgun, sponsored by the River Valley Gun Gallery and assistant shooting club coach Ellie Schad,&nbsp;to help offset the cost of entry fees and travel expenses.Tickets are available from any shooting club member, shooting club head coach Heather Wright at Suds R Us and Schad at Lashley Land and Recreational Brokers. Both businesses are in North Platte. The drawing will be 5 p.m. Dec. 1. The winner will be notified by phone.

LINCOLN — An earthen dam, rated as a high-hazard-potential structure, will be removed at Fort Robinson State Park in the name of public safety, a state agency announced Tuesday.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said that if the dam fails that forms Carter P. Johnson Lake at Fort Robinson, campers at the Soldier Creek Campground 4 1/2 miles downstream would be imperiled.

That risk is unacceptable, the commission said in a press release on Tuesday.

The 480-foot-long earthen dam was built in 1935, and was reclassified in 2020 as a high-hazard-potential dam by the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources, which inspects dams.

The agency said deficiencies in the structure could lead to its sudden or complete failure.

Consultants hired by Game and Parks estimated it would cost at least $11 million to replace the dam with a structure that meets today’s more rigorous design and safety standards.

Instead, the commission has decided to remove the dam, and restore the natural flow in Soldier Creek, a popular trout stream in northwest Nebraska.

“Our goal is to mitigate the loss of Carter P. Johnson Lake with enhanced angling opportunities in Soldier Creek,” said Jim Swenson, the deputy director of Game and Parks.

Steps to improve fishing have been undertaken recently at other fishing spots at Fort Robinson, including the Ice House Ponds, Grable ponds and Cherry Creek Pond.

Draining of Carter P. Johnson Lake will begin this fall so that the dam can be removed.

Carter P. Johnson was a frontier officer who served five tours of duty at Fort Robinson, according to a June 1989 article in Nebraska History by Tom Buecker, the curator of the Fort Robinson Museum.

Johnson was a private in 1877 when Lakota warrior Crazy Horse was killed at the Fort, and was a sergeant during the Cheyenne Outbreak of 1878-79.

“He was a first-class officer with rather uncouth frontier ways,” was how one commanding officer described him.

Once, Johnson shot a cowboy in self-defense in a barroom brawl in Maxey, Arizona, after being called a “Yankee son of a bitch.”

He retired as a major in 1909, settling on a ranch west of Fort Robinson.

This event will celebrate the formalizing of Traffic Incident Management (TIM) partnerships in Central Nebraska and the group’s progress in moving TIM initiatives forward to improve safety, reliability, and efficiency on the region’s roadways and Crash Responder Safety Week which begins Nov. 13 and runs through Nov. 17.&nbsp;

This marks a major milestone in the NDOT TIM program. NSP Colonel John Bolduc and other area responders will make brief remarks. This event is open to credentialed media. Photography and video are encouraged.&nbsp;

Area first responders honored with Great Plains Health Awards

NORTH PLATTE - Eagle Media on behalf of the Schmidt Foundation, donated $5,000 to the Lincoln County CASA last week.&nbsp;

The Lincoln County CASA has been serving the county for 11 years and has helped 150 children. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a non-profit, volunteer organization that advocates for foster kids during their court proceedings. "We can advocate for things that a child really needs when in care," said Deirdre Nichelson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The non-profit organization is already limited in the funds they receive. With the donation from the Schmidt Foundation, the money will be used to help train more volunteers. "It enables us to be able to train more volunteers, to recruit more volunteers, each one of the people that come into our organization and want to advocate for children have to be vetted and they have to be properly trained to do so," said Nichelson. "The more people that we can have that will go through that process to be advocates, then the more children in Lincoln County we can help."&nbsp;

LINCOLN — A storied Nebraska ranch — which grabbed national attention for its quirky name, size and whopping price tag — will live on in the hands of locals who have their own deep Sandhills roots.

Indeed, the two new owners of Dumbbell Ranch, who split the 15,500 acres in a $16.5 million purchase deal, reside on bordering family ranches.

Each has fond and personal memories of the Dumbbell, a founding ranch of the Nebraska Sandhills that’s situated in Cherry and Grant Counties.

Former State Sen. Al Davis of Hyannis claimed the larger part of the transaction — rangeland that had separated pieces of his own family’s OLO Ranch that also dates back to the late 1880s.

Davis had been interested since&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://hallhall.com/property-for-sale/nebraska/dumbbell-ranch/a095d00002U10JQ/">advertising began earlier this year,</a>&nbsp;noting the rarity of abutting property coming up for sale. Plus, he said, there’s a sentimental value.

“This is all a big neighborhood,” Davis said, stirring memories of his younger days when he’d visit the “big house” on the Dumbbell grounds. “When I was a kid we had card parties, rotating from ranch to ranch.”&nbsp;

Chris Gentry, the other buyer, penned an article for the local newspaper about his family’s historical ties to “The Great Dumbell Ranch.” It was written many months before the property hit the market.

“I begin this tale because of a street address,” Gentry wrote. “I am always asked, ‘Who named your road such a ridiculous name, Dumbell Road.”

Gentry, of the A Bar C Ranch, went on to write defiantly that the road was laid on “generations of great cattlemen that had nerves of steel, skin of leather, and the patience of Job.”

He also explained that over the generations, Dumbbell-related historical accounts, dates and spellings (including conflicting spellings for the ranch name — “Dumbbell” or “Dumbell”) have varied, depending on the source or author.

Undisputed is that the ranch — with its native rolling rangeland, hay-producing meadows, numerous lakes and artesian wells — has pressed on through changes of size, management, workers, heirs. The area Gentry and Davis bought in late October separates it from a family that had owned it for more than a century. It once was part of a larger Dumbbell that, decades ago, was divided among the children of Gustaf Edward Anderson and wife, Janie.

The result was three ranch sections: Pitchfork, 3 Circles and Dumbbell.

The house Gentry lives in today, on Dumbell Road, is on the old 3 Circles grounds.

“My Dad talked about being young and looking around the borders wondering which direction he could possibly grow,” Gentry wrote. “He never even considered the Dumbell, as it was solid as a rock.”

According to records filed in Cherry County, Gentry paid about $6.4 million for his roughly 4,800 acres, which, he said, brings his family property in the area to about 60,000 acres.&nbsp;

Davis’ roughly 11,000-acre, $10.2 million purchase boosts his family’s property to about 63,000 acres.&nbsp;

The sale transaction also reunifies parts of the original Dumbbell Ranch, which harkens back to the late 1880s and its founder, Dr. A.J. Plumer.

Davis, 71, said his grandfather, A.T. Davis, settled in the area in 1888 — and was a friend and neighbor to Plumer.

As the lore goes, the Dumbbell got its name when Plumer, during construction of the “white mansion” on the grounds, accidentally slammed a hammer on his thumb and exclaimed:&nbsp;Only a dumbbell would do that.

Over the years, Sandhills residents have become somewhat anxious as ranchland has turned over to out-of-state buyers, said Valentine-based Mark Johnson, a Hall and Hall real estate partner who brokered the Dumbbell deal.

Gentry joked that he wasn’t keen on Colorado folk buying into the neighborhood (a&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/dumbbell-ranch-operation-in-nebraska-sandhills-poised-for-next-chapter/">Colorado family’s bid</a>&nbsp;to buy the Dumbbell fell through last summer).&nbsp;

“People are pleased,” Davis said, “that locals ended up buying the ranch.”

Anne Anderson Johnson, part of the family that had ownership interest in the Dumbbell for more than 100 years, also considers it a happy ending to her family’s era.

When trying to sell the property, Johnson (whose last name changed recently as she remarried) said that she&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/04/03/dumbbell-in-nebraska-sandhills-gains-spotlight-with-sheer-size-storied-past/">loved having been part of the ranch</a>&nbsp;but that the younger generation had other interests, and it was “time to move on.”&nbsp;&nbsp;She said then that she hoped to pass on the legacy to a family as opposed to a big entity or corporation.

Johnson said she’s “absolutely thrilled” with the new Davis and Gentry ownership and that parts of the original Dumbbell are joined again.

“It makes a wonderful, amazing story,” she said.

KEARNEY, NEB. - The Buffalo County Fair announced that 38 Special and Cole Swindle will be performing at the 2024 Buffalo County Fair. 38 Special will perform Friday, July 26th with special guest to still be announced. Cole Swindle will perform Saturday, July 27th with special guest Greylan James.

The Mid-Plains United Way has many upcoming events as we head into the holiday season. The events include:&nbsp;

The Nebraska Youth Center is to provide a safe environment for youths in crisis who can find acceptance in resolving issues. The center provides opportunities for these youth to positively change their behavioral patterns. The Nebraska Youth Center opened up its facility in North Platte in 2011.&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: November 12th, 2023

The brave women and men who wore the uniform, and their families, made great sacrifices to serve our country. As President John F. Kennedy once said: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” Our veterans deserve not just our gratitude, but also our commitment. As a nation, we commit to give them the quality benefits and care they’ve earned. In Nebraska, we proved that is just the start. When I was Governor, we also committed to reducing the burdens our veterans face to maximize their benefits. It’s time Washington makes that same commitment.

That’s why this week I’ve introduced the Tax Cuts for Veterans Act in the U.S. Senate. My bill would make military retirement pay tax-free at the federal level. It is the fourth piece of legislation in my “Proven Nebraska Solutions Ready for America” package.

In 2021, at my request, Colonel Tom Brewer introduced LB387, which eliminated state income tax on military retirement benefits. LB387 was a big win for our state, for Nebraska’s job creators, and for military families looking to put down roots in Nebraska. It was not a Republican priority or a Democrat priority. It was a Nebraska priority. Not one state senator voted against it. It was a strong, bipartisan endorsement of a common-sense idea.

This policy has worked for veterans across Nebraska. Lawmakers in Washington should come together and do the same for veterans across the country. Doing so would give real relief to veterans and their families in this time of stubbornly high inflation. Consider an enlisted soldier, sailor, guardsman, or airman who serves for 20 years. My bill would result in tax relief of over $6,000 per year. That comes out to an extra $500 more per month. That’s extra money for necessities like groceries and gas, or even savings for the future or a rainy day.

In Nebraska, we proved it’s possible. It’s time to eliminate federal taxes on military retirement for veterans across the country. By passing my Tax Cuts for Veterans Act, we can take a significant step to better the lives of veterans and their families. I will never stop fighting to make sure our veterans get the support they’ve earned.

This Veterans Day, let us rededicate ourselves to showing our gratitude and respect to the 106,000 veterans living in Nebraska. Their courageous service should inspire us to help our community and country however we can. LB387 was a big win for our state, for Nebraska’s job creators, and for military families looking to put down roots in Nebraska. It was not a Republican priority or a Democrat priority. It was a Nebraska priority. Not one state senator voted against it. It was a strong, bipartisan endorsement of a common-sense idea.This policy has worked for veterans across Nebraska. Lawmakers in Washington should come together and do the same for veterans across the country. Doing so would give real relief to veterans and their families in this time of stubbornly high inflation. Consider an enlisted soldier, sailor, guardsman, or airman who serves for 20 years. My bill would result in tax relief of over $6,000 per year. That comes out to an extra $500 more per month. That’s extra money for necessities like groceries and gas, or even savings for the future or a rainy day.In Nebraska, we proved it’s possible. It’s time to eliminate federal taxes on military retirement for veterans across the country. By passing my Tax Cuts for Veterans Act, we can take a significant step to better the lives of veterans and their families. I will never stop fighting to make sure our veterans get the support they’ve earned.This Veterans Day, let us rededicate ourselves to showing our gratitude and respect to the 106,000 veterans living in Nebraska. Their courageous service should inspire us to help our community and country however we can. Working together, we can ensure that we fulfill our promises to those who have put their lives at risk to defend us.
