(Lexington, Neb.)&nbsp;– Dawson Public Power District reports that the 2023 irrigation season was the second highest revenue year in the past decade. That was noted at Dawson PPD’s Board of Directors meeting held December 6.

Irrigation revenue is at $26.6 million compared to $29 million in 2022. Customers used about 179.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity over the 2023 growing season compared to 215.8 million kWh in 2022. Dawson PPD’s net margin is currently $4.3 million over budget through October 31, however, present mild temperatures may reduce the net margin by year end.

“We expect to finish the year strong,” said Carmen Ackerman, Dawson PPD Manager of Finance and Administration.

As a not-for-profit, publicly owned electric utility, Dawson PPD reinvests its revenue into its electric grid to provide safe, reliable and affordable power to its customers. The excess funds will be used to fulfill the District’s mission and help finance 2024 construction projects.

Many respiratory illnesses go around in the fall and winter in southwest Nebraska. During the month of November, cases of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and COVID-19 spiked, with an average of 30 to 60 cases of COVID per week reported to Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD). 

Flu (influenza) rates were still low. Colds, flu, RSV, and COVID-19 can all have similar symptoms so it can be very challenging to know when it is serious or when to get medical care. For those more at risk of getting very sick, it is important to get tested so the right treatments can be given.&nbsp;

COLDS: Mild illness with symptoms usually starting 1 to 3 days after exposure. Symptoms include cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, watery eyes, and sneezing.&nbsp; Colds may last up to 10 days. Younger children are more likely to have colds, often 3 or more per season. There is no vaccine or treatment that can combat a cold, though rest and over-the-counter medicines can help with symptoms.&nbsp;

INFLUENZA (flu): Mild to severe illness with symptoms usually starting 2 to 4 days after exposure. Symptoms come on suddenly and include fever (not everyone will experience a fever), chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, and fatigue (tiredness). Some people have stomach issues, though this is more common in children. Symptoms may last 5 to 7 days with a shorter time for people who got a flu shot.&nbsp; Flu shots are available every year and help decrease the severity of symptoms as well as how long it lasts. Influenza is treatable with antiviral medication if identified within 48 hours after symptoms start, so check with your medical provider.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Symptoms of RSV in children are fever, runny nose, loss of appetite, coughing, sneezing, and wheezing. If you get COVID-19 and are at risk of getting very sick, treatments are available that can reduce your chances of needing to be hospitalized, so check with your medical provider or local pharmacy.  Fever and Cough – When is it serious? 

LINCOLN, Neb. -&nbsp;The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Semifinals with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over third-seeded Arkansas Saturday evening in front of 8,713 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Nebraska erased a late five-point deficit to rally and win set one, 26-24. The Huskers then cruised to a 25-14 victory in set two but Arkansas (28-6) battled over the next two sets. The Razorbacks won set three, 25-21, handing the Huskers their first set loss of the NCAA Tournament. Arkansas then led 19-17 in set four before NU rallied for a 25-23 victory.

Nebraska (32-1) will head to the NCAA Semifinals for the 17th time in program history and the sixth time in the last nine years. The Huskers will face No. 4 Pittsburgh on Thursday at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. The match is set for 6:00 pm CST, followed by Wisconsin vs. Texas.

The Huskers, who finished 21-0 at home this season, hit just .194 in the match, but Nebraska held Arkansas to a .100 attack percentage. The Huskers had the advantage in kills (57-47), blocks (17-9) and digs (78-62), but the Razorbacks served up eight aces while Nebraska's lone ace came on the first point of the match.

Merritt Beason, the NCAA Lincoln Regional Most Outstanding Player, finished with a match-high 19 kills. She recorded a double-double by adding 11 digs and nearly posted a triple-double after finishing with eight blocks, tying her career high. Harper Murray had 15 kills and 12 digs for the Big Red. Bergen Reilly also had a double-double with 40 assists and 16 digs.

Defensively, Bekka Allick had a career-high 12 blocks. Her 12 stuffs were the most ever by a Husker in an NCAA Tournament match during the rally-scoring era and were just one shy of the program record for any postseason match. Lexi Rodriguez had a match-high 20 digs to lead the Nebraska floor defense, as five Huskers finished with double-digit digs.

Reilly and Rodriguez joined Beason on the Lincoln Regional All-Tournament team.

Three Razorbacks finished with double-digit kills, led by 14 from Jillian Gillen.

Set 1:&nbsp;Arkansas went up 6-3 after three straight kills. The Razorbacks led 12-6 after a kill and ace by Gillen on back-to-back rallies. Murray and Beason posted back-to-back kills, and Beason and Allick combined for a block as the Huskers pulled within 12-10 after a 4-0 run. Arkansas answered with three points in a row and held a 16-11 lead before a kill by Batenhorst and Arkansas hitting error made it 16-13. However, the Razorbacks restored their five-point lead at 18-13. Back-to-back kills by Jackson brought NU back within three, 19-16, but once again Arkansas had an answer with a kill and block by Gillen to go up 21-16. Murray posted a sideout kill, which brought Kennedi Orr in to serve. From there, Murray terminated again and then added a block with Allick. A hitting error by Arkansas cut its lead to one, 21-20, after the Huskers' 4-0 run. The Razorbacks led 23-21 when a service error and block by Allick and Beason tied the score at 23-23. Beason terminated a kill for the Huskers' first lead since 2-1 and set point, 24-23. An Arkansas kill tied it 24-24, but Beason once again put down a kill to earn a second chance at set point. This time, a block by Beason and Jackson won the set, 26-24.&nbsp;

LINCOLN, Neb. -&nbsp;The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Semifinals with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over third-seeded Arkansas Saturday evening in front of 8,713 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.<figure>

The Razorbacks won set three, 25-21, handing the Huskers their first set loss of the NCAA Tournament. Arkansas then led 19-17 in set four before NU rallied for a 25-23 victory.Nebraska (32-1) will head to the NCAA Semifinals for the 17th time in program history and the sixth time in the last nine years. The Huskers will face No. 4 Pittsburgh on Thursday at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. The match is set for 6:00 pm CST, followed by Wisconsin vs. Texas.The Huskers, who finished 21-0 at home this season, hit just .194 in the match, but Nebraska held Arkansas to a .100 attack percentage. The Huskers had the advantage in kills (57-47), blocks (17-9) and digs (78-62), but the Razorbacks served up eight aces while Nebraska's lone ace came on the first point of the match.Merritt Beason, the NCAA Lincoln Regional Most Outstanding Player, finished with a match-high 19 kills. She recorded a double-double by adding 11 digs and nearly posted a triple-double after finishing with eight blocks, tying her career high. Harper Murray had 15 kills and 12 digs for the Big Red. Bergen Reilly also had a double-double with 40 assists and 16 digs.Defensively, Bekka Allick had a career-high 12 blocks. Her 12 stuffs were the most ever by a Husker in an NCAA Tournament match during the rally-scoring era and were just one shy of the program record for any postseason match. U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Nebraska

Acting United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Christopher P. Twohig, 45, of Cozad, Nebraska, was sentenced on December 1, 2023, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for possession with intent to distribute 5 grams or more methamphetamine (actual) and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Twohig to 120 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Twohig’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

On March 22, 2023, officers in Cozad, Nebraska, attempted to arrest Twohig on a state arrest warrant.&nbsp; Twohig was located and apprehended in a parking lot at a convenience store.&nbsp; Approximately 47 grams of meth was found in Twohig’s coat, along with multiple empty baggies.&nbsp; A firearm was also found in his vehicle with over 100 rounds of ammunition.&nbsp; The suspected meth was sent to the lab, and the lab determined that there was about 45.24 grams of meth, of which at least 41 grams was actual meth.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Nebraska State Patrol, and Dawson County Sheriff’s Office.

Cozad Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Methamphetamine and Gun Charges

Jamie Tobey, of North Platte, has been named the December Business Student of the Month at North Platte Community College.

“Jamie consistently demonstrates a passion for learning,” said Jimi Cole, the business instructor who nominated Jamie for the recognition. “She exhibits exceptional work ethic, goes above and beyond on every assignment and is always prepared. It has been a pleasure working with her.”&nbsp;

Tobey graduated from Maxwell High School in 2022 and is currently studying business administration at NPCC. She chose the college because it’s close to home and flexible.

“The instructors have all been very genuine,” Tobey said. “They have been helpful and really had my best interest in mind.”

Tobey is on track to graduate in the spring. When not in the classroom, she is involved with the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and The National Society of Leadership and Success.

Outside of college, she enjoys traveling to new places, going to the gym and spending time with family and friends.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - Communty member are gearing up for a fundraiser event involving Christmas caroling to raise funds to purchase 6 sewing machines to send to Kenya. The group is looking to raise $1,400 to purchase the 6 machines with. The machines will be used to create new uniforms for school children who attend Overcoming Faith Schools. The school has over 900 students.&nbsp;

The group will be caroling from 6:00pm - 9:00pm on December 22nd in North Platte. The club says for a suggested $50 donation, you can have the carolers come to your home or send the group to someone else's home. If you would like to donate, you can send checks to North Platte Rotary PO Box 2313, North Platte, NE 69103. DECEMBER 8, 2023 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested the former Dundy County Sheriff as part of an investigation into firearms missing from the sheriff’s office.

An inventory conducted by the sheriff’s office identified that four department-owned handguns were missing. This morning, NSP investigators served a search warrant at the residence of Clinton Smith, 42, of Benkelman, and located one of the four missing firearms.

Smith was arrested for theft by unlawful taking and possession of a stolen firearm. He was lodged in Dundy County Jail.

This investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information that could assist in this investigation is asked to contact Nebraska Crime Stoppers. Lincoln, NE – December 8, 2023 – Nebraska Lottery tickets can help you spread instant joy this holiday season. But when you're making up your gift list, only give tickets to people who are old enough to play.

By law, Nebraska Lottery tickets may only be purchased and redeemed by persons who are 19 years or older.

“We always encourage players to play responsibly, and we ask them to give responsibly as well,” said Lottery Director Brian Rockey. “Nebraska Lottery tickets are colorful, fun, and a great gift idea, but they should only be given to recipients who are at least 19 years of age.”

The Nebraska Lottery has joined lotteries and community organizations around the world for the 2023 Gift Responsibly Campaign organized by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and the International Center for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors at McGill University. During the holidays the Nebraska Lottery will work to promote awareness about the risks of underage lottery play using social media and in-store signage.

Rockey noted that each ticket, whether Scratch or Lotto, carries the minimum age (19) reminder, and the same message appears on in-store signage. “No matter how clever or attractive a game may be, it should always be played in moderation and only be given to individuals who are of legal age to play,” said Rockey.

When you give Nebraska Lottery tickets, you’re helping to build a better Nebraska. A total of $951,748,496 in Lottery proceeds has been distributed since the Nebraska Lottery began operation on September 11, 1993. &nbsp;

“The staff of the Treasurer’s Office Division of Unclaimed Property are there to help you get what is yours. This is your money, and it should be returned to you,” Briese said. “It’s quick, it’s easy, and it is free.”

Nearly one in every five Nebraskans has some sort of unclaimed property, which could be financial accounts or items of value in which the owner has not initiated any activity for several years. When that happens the money or properties are submitted to the state. Common examples include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and uncashed checks.

In 2022 the Nebraska Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division returned more than $18.2 million and paid out more than 13,000 claims. So far this year the Nebraska Treasurer’s office has returned $14,303,852 on more than 19,000 claims.

State maintenance forces will be performing a crack seal from reference post 84.05 to reference post 91.65, from Maywood to Curtis. The work is anticipated to take 15 days. Traffic will be maintained witha pilot car and flaggers. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.

People are encouraged to donate lightly used coats of all sizes and colors. Donations can be placed in the big box located in the concession stand area of the McDonald-Belton Building.

The coat drive will conclude Dec. 16. All donated coats will be distributed to The Connection homeless shelter and the Rape/Domestic Abuse Program of North Platte.

North Platte Chamber & Development Corporation Selects White River Soy Processing to  Develop Oilseed Processing Plant 



A panel of head coaches from around the country selects the squad. A player first must be named all-region to be up for All-American status. Neff (North Platte) was first-team All-Central this fall with Ferguson (Lincoln SW) receiving honorable mention accolades.

Ferguson and Neff are the 30th and 31st All-Americans in UNK volleyball history. This is Neff's first such honor while Ferguson was a 2022 third-team pick playing for Northwest Missouri.I n the recently completed season, Ferguson led the&nbsp;Lopers&nbsp;in kills (328), was tied for the lead in service aces (35), ranked third in both kills per set (2.83) and blocks (75) and posted a .944 serve receiving percentage. Reaching the 1,000 career kill mark, she also hit .273, averaged 3.03 digs per set had 10 double doubles.

Neff had the same number of double doubles while directing an offense that hit .264 and averaged 14.2 kps. In her second year as a starter, she came in at 11.4 assists, 2.4 digs, 0.8 kills, 0.6 blocks and 0.3 aces per set. Hitting a team-best .308, Neff was the only&nbsp;Loper&nbsp;to appear in all 117 sets and is now up to 2,666 career assists.

UNK went 29-6 (16-4 MIAA), reaching the NCAA Tournament for a 24th&nbsp;consecutive year and posting a perfect 12-0 home record.

&nbsp; On Wednesday 12/06/2023 @ 5:52 PM Scottsbluff Police responded to a traffic crash at the intersection of Hwy 26 and 5TH Ave. Investigation revealed that a red 2003 Infiniti G35 driven by Johnathan Dykes, age 44 of Douglas, Wyoming, was west bound making a left turn to go south on 5TH Ave. At the same time a silver 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Marco Martinez-Hernandez, age 29 of Terrytown, was east bound on Hwy 26 at 5TH Ave. 

The Chevrolet crashed into the side of the Infiniti as the Infiniti turned. A passenger in the Chevrolet was identified as Mario Martinez-Cano, age 29 of Terrytown. Both occupants of the Chevrolet had to be extricated from the vehicle. The passenger did not have a seat belt on. Marco and Mario were transported to Regional West Medical Center by Valley Ambulance. 

Dykes refused treatment at the scene. Valley Ambulance and Scottsbluff Fire Dept assisted at the scene. Citations are pending the completion of the investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;
