LINCOLN, Neb. — Twenty high school seniors from across Nebraska have been selected for a prestigious University of Nebraska–Lincoln program aimed at addressing a critical shortage of food animal veterinarians in the state.

The students were named to the second cohort of the Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program, a competitive initiative launched through a partnership between Gov. Jim Pillen and the university. The program seeks to develop a pipeline of skilled veterinarians committed to serving Nebraska’s livestock producers, particularly in rural communities.

“I’m excited for the futures of these students,” Pillen said in a statement. “They are pursuing a career path that is certainly in high demand. We need skilled veterinarians who can provide advice and services to Nebraska’s livestock producers. Their commitment to working in our rural communities will help ensure food security, now and into the future.”

OMAHA, Neb. — A federal grand jury has indicted a Big Springs man on multiple charges, including two counts of methamphetamine distribution and one count of illegal firearm possession, U.S. Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced Wednesday.

Kenneth M. Johnston Jr., 46, is accused of distributing 50 grams of methamphetamine on two separate occasions—July 10 and July 14, 2023. Each count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and up to life in federal prison, along with a possible $10 million fine and at least five years of supervised release.

Johnston is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm on or about January 22, 2025. That count carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release.

The charges are part of a larger announcement involving 16 unsealed indictments from the federal grand jury for the District of Nebraska, naming a total of 22 defendants. Prosecutors emphasized that indictments are only accusations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Robert Crable, Jr., age 59, of Bayard, Nebraska, is charged in a four-count Indictment.&nbsp; Count I charges Crable with conspiracy to produce child pornography beginning on or about November 27, 2023, and continuing until on or about May 20, 2024.&nbsp;

The maximum possible penalty if convicted is not less than 15 years’ and up to 30 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a term of supervised release of not less than 5 years and up to life, and a $100 special assessment.&nbsp;

 Count II charges Crable with attempted production of child pornography beginning on or about November 27, 2023, and continuing until on or about May 20, 2024.&nbsp; The maximum possible penalty if convicted is not less than 15 years’ and up to 30 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a term of supervised release of not less than 5 years and up to life, and a $100 special assessment.&nbsp; 

Count III charges Crable with receipt of child pornography beginning at least on or about February 9, 2022, and continuing to on or about March 13, 2025.&nbsp; The maximum possible penalty if convicted is not less than 5 years’ and up to 20 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a term of supervised release of not less than 5 years and up to life, and a $100 special assessment.&nbsp;

 Count IV charges Crable with possession of child pornography on or about March 13, 2025.&nbsp; The maximum possible penalty if convicted is up to 20 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a term of supervised release of not less than 5 years and up to life, and a $100 special assessment&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

LINCOLN, Neb - A measure originally intended to create uniformity in the feedlot industry under Nebraska law was narrowed before being advanced to final reading May 21.

Under current law, feedlots within a brand inspection area in Nebraska can become registered feedlots and be exempt from brand inspections when shipping cattle to slaughter. Inspection of RFLs is required, however, when cattle enter the feedlot and the Nebraska Brand Committee can conduct regular audits of RFL records at their discretion.

Sumner Sen. Teresa Ibach, sponsor of LB646, said only the western two-thirds of Nebraska is within the brand inspection area, while the eastern one-third of the state has no branding inspection requirements.

As amended on first-round debate, the measure would require a $1,000 fee to operate a registered feedlot in Nebraska and increase the cap on the physical and electronic inspection fee the Brand Committee may charge to $1.50 per head. The measure also would allow for new inspection exemptions for cattle:

• transferred to the care of another individual without transfer of ownership if proof of temporary possession is established;

• being transferred to or from a qualified dairy;

• transferred to an affiliated grow yard from an inspected RFL under certain conditions; and

• transferred from an affiliated grow yard to an RFL under certain conditions.

North Platte Sen. Mike Jacobson offered an amendment on select file that he said was the result of continued negotiations among various stakeholders.

The amendment, which replaces the previous proposal, would increase the cap on the physical and electronic inspection fee the Brand Committee may charge to $1.50 per head, exempt from inspection cattle shipped to or from a qualified dairy and set the feedlot registration fee at 50 cents multiplied by the feedlot’s maximum livestock capacity.

Jacobson said the amendment would cut the current feedlot registration fee in half. The state’s brand inspection system is important to cow/calf producers, he said, and the compromise amendment would ensure that all factions of the industry are treated fairly.

Calling the amendment “a good first step,” Ibach spoke in favor of it. She said further reforms need to happen, but that the proposal would “move the needle” in the right direction.

“I feel like we’ve made some progress,” she said.

Whitman Sen. Tanya Storer also supported the amendment, although with reservations. A vigorous opponent of the measure on the first round of debate, Storer called the negotiation process “frustrating” and said she had “fought like hell” to make sure the integrity of the state’s brand inspection system was maintained for cattle producers.

“This industry is the core — the foundation — certainly of my district, but I believe of the state of Nebraska,” Storer said.

She offered and later withdrew a floor amendment to the Jacobson amendment to replace a mileage reimbursement system with a flat surcharge fee for travel expenses incurred by brand committee members for inspections.

Ibach said the change was not part of the agreement that was reached during negotiations, but she offered a floor amendment with those same provisions that also included a $20 cap on the surcharge.

She said she was willing to do so in order to not derail the bill and “keep talking” about the change before the final round of debate. The Ibach amendment was adopted 36-0.

Following the 37-0 adoption of the Jacobson amendment, senators advanced LB646 to final reading by voice vote.

The measure also would allow for new inspection exemptions for cattle:• transferred to the care of another individual without transfer of ownership if proof of temporary possession is established;• being transferred to or from a qualified dairy;• transferred to an affiliated grow yard from an inspected RFL under certain conditions; and• transferred from an affiliated grow yard to an RFL under certain conditions.North Platte Sen. Mike Jacobson offered an amendment on select file that he said was the result of continued negotiations among various stakeholders.<figure>

 </figure>The amendment, which replaces the previous proposal, would increase the cap on the physical and electronic inspection fee the Brand Committee may charge to $1.50 per head, exempt from inspection cattle shipped to or from a qualified dairy and set the feedlot registration fee at 50 cents multiplied by the feedlot’s maximum livestock capacity.Jacobson said the amendment would cut the current feedlot registration fee in half. The state’s brand inspection system is important to cow/calf producers, he said, and the compromise amendment would ensure that all factions of the industry are treated fairly.Calling the amendment “a good first step,” Ibach spoke in favor of it. She said further reforms need to happen, but that the proposal would “move the needle” in the right direction.“I feel like we’ve made some progress,” she said.Whitman Sen. Tanya Storer also supported the amendment, although with reservations. A vigorous opponent of the measure on the first round of debate, Storer called the negotiation process “frustrating” and said she had “fought like hell” to make sure the integrity of the state’s brand inspection system was maintained for cattle producers.“This industry is the core — the foundation — certainly of my district, but I believe of the state of Nebraska,” Storer said.She offered and later withdrew a floor amendment to the Jacobson amendment to replace a mileage reimbursement system with a flat surcharge fee for travel expenses incurred by brand committee members for inspections.Ibach said the change was not part of the agreement that was reached during negotiations, but she offered a floor amendment with those same provisions that also included a $20 cap on the surcharge.She said she was willing to do so in order to not derail the bill and “keep talking” about the change before the final round of debate. The Ibach amendment was adopted 36-0.Following the 37-0 adoption of the Jacobson amendment, senators advanced LB646 to final reading by voice vote.

Guests can stop by the mansion at 1004 N. Spruce Street in Ogallala for cookies, lemonade, and tea on Friday, May 23, and again on Saturday, May 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, though donations are encouraged to support upkeep and student tour guides.

Built in 1887, the Victorian mansion has long been a historical landmark in Ogallala. Over the past year, the society has refinished the original hardwood floors on both the first and second levels, most recently completed by J &amp; W Hardwood Flooring. In keeping with the period, area rugs have been added to preserve authenticity and help retain warmth in the house.

The third floor has also seen improvements, including the addition of a recreated maid’s quarters to give visitors a deeper look into the home’s original lifestyle.

Looking ahead, the historical society plans to replace the deteriorating original window frames, which have rotted over time. Fundraising for the window restoration project will begin during opening weekend and continue through The Big Give, a community-wide donation campaign taking place June 1–15.

Regular hours for the mansion are Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The mansion is closed on Mondays, but private tours and event rentals are available by appointment.

Keith County Historical Society Prepares for Opening Weekend at Mansion on the Hill

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – The 7th Annual Buckin' Battle and Bash bull riding event charges into the D &amp; N Event Center this Friday and Saturday, May 23–24, promising two nights of adrenaline-packed action and family fun in North Platte.

Professional bull riders Mason Ward and Hayden Harris are among the featured athletes competing in the standalone bull riding event, which offers an up-close and personal fan experience in an intimate setting.

“You don’t have to have it at a rodeo ground, you can put it wherever,” said Ward. “At the D &amp; N, it’s perfect—there’s not a bad seat in the house. It’s well put together every year, great riders, great bulls.”

Each competitor will ride two bulls per night. Harris said he sometimes scouts bulls beforehand but often prefers to ride instinctively. “You never know, it’s a live animal—they could do something different every time,” he said.

Ward acknowledged the physical toll of competing back-to-back nights, calling it “controlled chaos.” But for him and Harris, the challenge is part of the draw.

The weekend also includes a free-to-attend Futurity at 9 a.m. Saturday, where yearling and two-year-old bulls will buck with training devices in a preview of the sport’s future stars. “It’s kind of like Pee Wee football for bulls,” Ward said. Harris added, “You’re watching the next superstars—just like we started out on sheep and calves, they’re starting young too.”

After-parties will follow both shows—Friday night at the D &amp; N Event Center and Saturday at PALS Brewery.

Gates open at 6 p.m. with bull riding action beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are available in advance at Feed and Co. on Rodeo Road or Town and Country Western Wear, and at the gate—though Ward warns, “It’s gonna sell out fast.”

OGALLALA, Neb. — Officials in Keith County have issued a ban on all open burning and the sale and discharge of fireworks due to heightened wildfire risks stemming from ongoing dry conditions.

The Keith County Board of Commissioners approved the emergency resolutions Tuesday following recommendations from local fire chiefs. The fire ban is in effect until further notice and applies across the county, including popular recreation areas like Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala.

“No open fires or fire pits are allowed,” officials said, noting that the ban includes campfires and beach fires. Propane-fueled stoves and fire pits remain permitted, according to Nebraska Game and Parks.

Fireworks are also restricted under the new measures. While discharge of fireworks is already prohibited in state recreation areas, the sale and use of fireworks throughout Keith County is now banned.

While the state wide burn ban expired yesterday authorities urge residents and visitors to exercise caution and comply with the restrictions to prevent potential wildfires.

Keith County bans open Burning, Fireworks amid Wildfire risk

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte City Council meeting began with a proposed ordinance aimed at addressing long-abandoned properties, which sparked the lengthiest discussion during the May 20th meeting, as officials opened the floor to public feedback on the measure.&nbsp;

Ordinance 4211, which would establish a vacant property registration system, was brought back after being tabled at the previous meeting. Mayor Brandon Kelliher emphasized that the session was intended solely for discussion, with no vote planned.&nbsp;

“We wanted to give the public an opportunity to comment,” Kelliher said, noting that about 10 residents spoke during the hearing. “Many of them were thoughtful, had questions, and we were able to clarify a few misunderstandings.”&nbsp;

The ordinance targets properties that have been left unattended, often due to unresolved estates when owners pass away. Kelliher acknowledged the difficulty of balancing property rights with neighborhood well-being, especially when abandoned homes are infested or hazardous.&nbsp;

“A big part of this discussion is you don't want to run across the property rights of an owner who isn't taking care of their property,” Kelliher said, “but the neighbors also have some rights in this as well. And so, you have we have to try to find balance.”&nbsp;

A revised version of the ordinance is expected to be returned for council consideration at a future meeting.&nbsp;

The Council also approved two ordinances that move forward the long-term expansion of Francis Street, a project expected to improve traffic flow and encourage economic development on the city’s east side.&nbsp;

“This is an ordinance for the beginning of the extension of Francis Street,” Kelliher noted. “Francis Street is the one that runs kind of across the one-ways by McDonald's, down by the edge of the mall, and behind Walmart… right now, it kind of ends on the eastern head stop on the east of the town. This little piece right here will extend it about a block and a half because the homeless shelter and that organization are going to build some housing right there on that corner — well, what will be a corner.”&nbsp;

The council also approved Ordinance 4208, which advances the next segment of the Francis Street project, stretching the road behind the post office and eventually out to Newberry Access at Golden Road.&nbsp;

“Nothing’s going to happen there next week,” Kelliher added, “but over the next few years, what you have to do is set your community up for success in the future… It’s going to be a great deal for the town in the long run.”&nbsp;

Items 9 and 10 were removed from the meeting agenda for further work and will be considered at a later date.&nbsp;

Mayor Brandon Kelliher emphasized that the session was intended solely for discussion, with no vote planned.&nbsp;“We wanted to give the public an opportunity to comment,” Kelliher said, noting that about 10 residents spoke during the hearing. “Many of them were thoughtful, had questions, and we were able to clarify a few misunderstandings.”&nbsp;The ordinance targets properties that have been left unattended, often due to unresolved estates when owners pass away. Kelliher acknowledged the difficulty of balancing property rights with neighborhood well-being, especially when abandoned homes are infested or hazardous.&nbsp;“A big part of this discussion is you don't want to run across the property rights of an owner who isn't taking care of their property,” Kelliher said, “but the neighbors also have some rights in this as well. The legislation helps to preserve electrical service to homes, businesses and other Nebraska customers, by establishing requirements for cryptocurrency mining operations. In addition to notifying power utilities in advance, the bill also provides for payment or a letter of credit covering costs associated with potential infrastructure upgrades.

"With the opportunity in expanding this emerging industry, comes responsibility. This bill provides the guardrails needed to ensure that our electrical grid can handle the increased demand. By requiring mining operations to contribute to grid upgrades and be transparent about their energy use, we're protecting our infrastructure,” said Gov. Pillen.&nbsp;

In addition to the provisions above, the bill allows utilities to impose terms and conditions on these operations, such as requiring them to shut down during times of peak electrical demand and requiring that mining operations report annually on their energy consumption.

McCook, Ne - Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States and Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) reminds residents that it is also one of the most preventable cancers. There are several types of skin cancer, with melanoma being the most dangerous. Melanoma of the skin is the fifth most common cancer in Nebraska and there are more cases found here compared to overall US rates.

“Nebraskans are at higher risk for skin cancer for a couple of reasons,” explains&nbsp;Sarah Minnick, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “We have a lot of outdoor workers particularly agriculture workers, and a higher prevalence of people with light-colored skin and hair and eyes.”

If you spend time outdoors without protecting your skin, you are exposing yourself to skin damage and sunburn which increases your risk. Having just five or more sunburns doubles your risk of developing melanoma. People with blue or green eyes, blonde or red hair, and skin that freckles or burns easily are also at higher risk.

When you will be in the sun, following 3 simple steps now can prevent skin cancer later in life.

“Early detection of skin cancer can save lives,” continues Minnick. “The survival rate is 99% if it’s found while it’s still at the local stage. Keep an eye on your skin and talk to your healthcare provider if you notice changes in your skin’s appearance."

Lake McConaughy is currently sitting at 61% capacity, with water temperatures hovering around 52°F. While it’s a bit chilly for swimming just yet, anglers are enjoying productive days on the lake, especially those chasing walleye, smallmouth bass, and catfish.

Camping season is officially here! Superintendent Patrick Schnell reminds visitors that dry conditions have prompted a statewide burn ban in Nebraska. This means no wood-burning campfires, but propane grills and fire pits are still allowed—just no open flames involving wood.

Reservation season kicked off May 20, so now’s the time to plan your Memorial Day Weekend getaway.

Weather Watch &amp; Safety
A severe thunderstorm recently swept through the area, producing 50–70 mph winds. There is still storm debris—including fallen limbs—in many areas. Crews are hard at work cleaning up, but visitors should remain cautious.

All four docks at Lake McConaughy were pulled on May 15 due to sustained high winds and forecasts. Docks will remain out any time gusts are expected to exceed 30–40 mph for safety. Keep an eye on the weather before heading out, and be prepared for sudden changes.

Free Park Entry Day – May 17
Don’t forget—Saturday, May 17 is Free Park Entry Day in Nebraska. No park entry permit is required at any state park. Fishing is also free, although all other regulations still apply. It’s a perfect time to explore the great outdoors without breaking the bank.

 <li>Walleye continue to be caught in 15–25 feet of water using both lures and bait. Reports indicate a strong size class, with several large fish being caught. Remember: anglers may keep one walleye 22 inches or longer in their daily bag.
</li><li>Smallmouth bass are active on rocky points and near the face of the dam—great spots for both shore and boat anglers.
</li><li>Catfish are biting from Sand Point all the way to the mouth of the river, with stink baits and cut bait producing the best results.
