WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) recently mailed the July cattle survey to about 18,000 cattle operations nationwide to provide an up-to-date measure of U.S. cattle inventories. This is the first July cattle survey mailed to producers since the reinstatement of key reports was announced earlier this year.

“This information helps producers make timely, informed business decisions and plan for herd expansion or reduction,” said NASS Livestock Branch Chief Travis Averill. “It also helps packers and government leaders evaluate expected slaughter volume for future months and determine potential supplies for export. Obtaining the current count of cattle will serve as an important decision-making tool for the entire agriculture industry.”

During the first two weeks of July, U.S. cattle producers will have the opportunity to report their beef and dairy cattle inventories, calf crop, death loss and cattle on feed information. To make it as easy as possible for producers to participate in the survey, NASS offers the option of responding via the website&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agcounts.usda.gov/">agcounts.usda.gov</a>, telephone, mail or a personal interview with a local NASS representative.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 23, 2025) — Nebraska Congressman Adrian Smith said making key tax relief provisions permanent and curbing federal spending are top priorities as lawmakers debate what President Donald Trump has dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.”

Speaking to the North Platte Post over the weekend, Smith, who represents Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District, said the sweeping economic package — formally known as the reconciliation bill — is critical for the country’s financial future.

“If we don't get our work done on this bill, that means a roughly $1,500 tax increase for your average household, and more than $5,000 for your average farming operation,” Smith said, citing figures from the American Farm Bureau.

The reconciliation process, Smith explained, allows Congress to pass budget-related legislation with a simple majority in the Senate — avoiding the usual 60-vote threshold.

“The fact of the matter is, we've gotten the bill through the House already, which I think is good. We need to get our work done,” Smith said. “Some of these tax policies are currently on the books. We want to make that permanent. We certainly don’t want taxes to go up.”

Smith pointed to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as a model of pro-growth policy that boosted wages and encouraged investment across agriculture, manufacturing, and other sectors.

“Sometimes you listen to folks in Washington and they demonize prosperity so much, you'd never realize that actually our tax code depends very heavily on prosperity,” he said. “Even with the tax cut, businesses paid more in taxes because they were making more money — and that’s a good thing.”

Smith, who was in North Platte for a series of local meetings and events, emphasized that he considers Nebraska’s agricultural economy to be on “the front lines” of the nation’s economic engine.

He also said trade policy remains a top issue, both for Nebraska producers and the Trump administration.

“Hopefully we’ll have some trade agreements come together very quickly,” Smith said. “And land the plane, so to speak, on trade policy so that we can really be poised well heading into next year.”

The Senate is expected to take up the reconciliation bill in the coming weeks.

NORTH PLATTE, Ne - When Tanner Drueke was a little boy, he rummaged through his dad's old rodeo gear bag, finding the remnants of Bart Drueke's bull riding career.

And that was just more fuel for the Sutherland man’s love of rodeo.

Now Drueke, age 21, is competing professionally in the PRCA and will ride at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte on June 20. He also competes in regional associations like the Nebraska State Rodeo Association (NSRA) and the Mid-States Rodeo Association (MSRA).

He rode bulls, like his dad, in high school, but he also rode bareback horses, and that’s where he found his niche.

In high school, Drueke qualified for the Nebraska State High School Finals three times, then went on to the National High School Finals Rodeo three times.

He attended Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo., rodeoing collegiately, and graduating with an associate’s degree in electrical technology.

By the time Drueke was born to Bart and Crystal, his dad had pretty much quit rodeoing, but Tanner saw the memorabilia around the house, the mementos of his dad’s rodeo career, and he loved it.

“I saw all the stuff on the wall and thought I wanted to do it,” he said.

Now, he’s working for a rancher near Paxton and rodeoing professionally. His goal is to be among the top fifteen bareback riders in the Prairie Circuit (the pro rodeos in Nebraska Kansas and Oklahoma), and compete at the Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kansas in November.

He’s sitting eighth in the Prairie Circuit right now, and has won a few checks, including a second place finish in Strong City Kan., a fourth place finish in Abbyville, Kan., and a third place in Springfield, Neb., enough to keep him on the rodeo road.

Another young bareback rider from Nebraska will compete in North Platte at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo.

Spencer DeNaeyer, Seneca, is friends and traveling partners with Drueke.

A 2022 Mullen High School graduate, he competed at the Neb. State High School Finals and at the National High School Finals Rodeo, finishing eleventh at Nationals his senior year.

DeNaeyer went to Odessa (Texas) College, earned a degree in ag business, and rodeoed for them.

Now he lives in Cheyenne, Wyo. with his fiancée Kaydence Bartlett. He broke his wrist during a ride at a rodeo in Montana last September and is just now back to riding. &nbsp;

The break, in the scaphoid bone of the wrist, is usually a “career-ender,” DeNaeyer said. It required surgery, but he’s back to competition. It hurts, but “not that bad,” he said. “Not enough to quit” rodeoing.

Like Drueke, DeNaeyer’s dad competed in rodeo, but as a saddle bronc rider. DeNaeyer rode bulls for a while and did some saddle bronc riding, but it was the bareback riding that he took to.

Getting on bulls is “pretty scary,” he said. “At least the bucking horse is trying to get away from me instead of chasing me and trying to kill me when I get off,” like a bull would, he joked.

The Buffalo Bill Rodeo attracts big-name talent, and that can be intimidating for young cowboys like Drueke and DeNaeyer, who are just getting started.

But it can also be incentive, DeNaeyer said. “It’s hard not to ‘fan-girl’ over the cowboys I’ve watched on TV since I was twelve,” he said. “But you have to snap out of it and say, I’m here to beat you now. I’m here to win. You’re not there to get autographs, you’re there to take money.”

This will be the third time for him to compete in North Platte. Two years ago, he won third place. &nbsp;

Over 450 cowboys and cowgirls will compete at this year’s Buffalo Bill Rodeo, in eight events: bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and bull riding.

Performances start at 7:30 pm June 18-21. Slack, the extra competition that doesn’t fit into the evening performances, is at 8 am on Jun 18-19.

Tickets range in price from $11-$24 and can be purchased online at NebraskalandDays.com, at the NebraskalandDays office, and at the gate.

Buffalo Bill Rodeo Set To Kick-Off Wednesday Night in North Platte

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 16, 2025) — As the 70th annual Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant unfolds this week in North Platte, three young women from across the state are competing for the prestigious title ahead of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo's opening night Wednesday.

Contestants Brylee Thompson of Hershey, Jessica Lange of Crofton, and Maycie Johnson of Oakdale are showcasing their horsemanship, public speaking, fashion, and rodeo knowledge as they vie for the honor of becoming Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2026.

The competition began with horsemanship at the Wild West Arena and continued with impromptu interviews, a barbecue meet-and-greet, and formal speeches. Contestants will also be evaluated on their social media engagement, a modern element of the pageant that reflects the evolving role of rodeo queens as public ambassadors.

Thompson, who began competing in pageants at age 10, called it a “privilege” to be in the running for Nebraska’s top rodeo title. “You rarely bring your own horse to a rodeo as Miss Rodeo Nebraska,” she said. “It’s important to be able to ride different horses and navigate each arena confidently.”

Lange, representing northeast Nebraska, emphasized how social media has expanded the reach and impact of the role. “I don’t have a large cheering section here, but through social media, so many people back home can follow the pageant and support me,” she said.

Johnson, the third contestant, is newer to pageantry but comes from a background in barrel racing. “It’s about the bond between you and your horse,” she said. “That trust and communication is everything in barrel racing and something I’m excited to bring to this experience.”

This year’s style show, a fan-favorite event where contestants display Western fashion flair, will take place Tuesday night at Venue 304 in downtown North Platte — a new location for the occasion. Doors open at 6 p.m., followed by a fundraising auction at 6:30 and the show at 7.

The pageant will culminate Wednesday with the coronation of Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2026, just before the start of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo at the Wild West Arena.

The Miss Rodeo Nebraska Pageant Association, founded in 1955, celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. The winner will spend the next year promoting the sport of rodeo and the Western lifestyle, traveling across the country and representing Nebraska on a national stage.

Three Young Women Vie for 2026 Miss Rodeo Nebraska Title During Historic Pageant Week in North Platte (Podcast)

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The historic Buffalo Bill Rodeo, now recognized as Nebraska’s largest rodeo and a PRCA Hall of Fame event, kicks off its four-night run next Wednesday, June 18, in North Platte.

Levi Fisher, chairman of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo Committee, and Justin Thompson, co-chair, joined Derek Beck of the North Platte Post this week to preview the annual event, which runs through June 21 as part of NebraskaLand Days.

“We’re now the largest rodeo in Nebraska with what we’ve increased our purse to,” said Fisher. “It’s all about trying to up ourselves every year. Everybody knows about NebraskaLand Days and the Buffalo Bill Rodeo—we just want to keep building on that legacy.”

Organizers credit community support, longstanding sponsorships and a deep roster of volunteers for the rodeo’s continued success and national reputation. Fisher noted that North Platte’s pride in hosting the event fuels its growth and helps attract top-tier rodeo athletes.

“Guys that have been part of NebraskaLand Days for 40 years still want to see this grow,” he said. “It’s our chance to showcase North Platte and kick off the summer.”

This year’s rodeo will once again feature livestock from Beutler and Son, whose elite stock frequently appears at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Thompson emphasized the importance of quality animals to the rodeo’s success.

“These are true animal athletes,” he said. “They get better every year, just like the cowboys and cowgirls. Beutler and Son bring the kind of stock that contestants can win on.”

A key change this year is the earlier nightly start time. Rodeo performances will now begin at 7:30 p.m., moved up from the traditional 8 p.m. start to accommodate families and working spectators.

Ropin' The Rodeo - Buffalo Bill Rodeo Returns June 18 with Big Purse, Top Stock and Family-Friendly Fun

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - When Jim Gragg takes vacation, he goes to work, and loves every minute of it.

For the past fifty years, the Tryon, Neb. man has spent four days every June in North Platte, volunteering at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo. And even though it’s work, he loves it.

Since 1974, Gragg has untied calves after every tie-down roping run at the rodeo.

He was a high school sophomore when he began helping, and he’s never missed a performance or Wednesday morning slack.

He drives from his ranch south of Tryon every day, instead of staying in North Platte. It’s easier that way, because he can take care of ranch chores on the place he and wife Judy own. He puts on about 600 miles in the four-day period.

After each tie-down roping run, he and another man run to the calf and take the rope off, handing it back to the roper. It’s not a hard job, but with about 140-150 ropers throughout the four days of rodeo, it requires the ability to make the repeated trip from the side of the arena, to the horse, roper and calf, and back again.

Last year, Gragg was given the Trail Boss Award, an annual award given to volunteers who exemplify dedication and going above and beyond the call of duty to support the rodeo or its auxiliary events.

Gragg didn’t know he was receiving the award last year till he heard his name called. It was a big surprise, he said. “I was headed to the catch pen, and I saw all these people I know,” he said. He was escorted to the middle of the arena, where he was presented with the award.

“I was shocked, I was just so shocked,” he said. “Coming home that night, we generally have the radio on, but I was so wound, I rattled all the way home.”

As soon as he got home, he hung the plaque. “I found a spot and hung it on the wall.”

Gragg, along with other volunteers, helps with the calves and steers, making sure they’re sorted in the correct pens. When Hadley Barrett was announcing the rodeo, he always opened a gate to the catch pen, so Hadley could ride his horse into it during the bull riding.

Gragg loves every part of the rodeo, “everything,” he said. One of the highlights is for him to meet the rodeo stars who compete in North Platte. “I’ve met so many neat people,” he said, like (world champion tie-down roper) Tuf Cooper. One morning at slack, he was roping, and I thought, I’d just as well shake his hand. I’ll never get another chance. It’s neat to see all these people and be a part of their life, at least for a few seconds.”

Gragg and his wife Judy raise cattle and quarter horses. She usually doesn’t accompany him to the rodeo, but she was there when he received the Trail Boss Award.

A humble man, he was grateful to receive the award. “It meant the world to me. I never dreamed in a million, in a million-plus years, they’d even consider me for this award. It means the world to me.”

The time he spends at the rodeo is special to him.

“I just consider those four days my vacation. I just love it.”

This year’s rodeo is June 18-21 with nightly shows at 7:30 pm. The rodeo is held at the Wild West Arena in North Platte.

Working rodeo vacation; Buffalo Bill Rodeo volunteer has 50 years under his belt

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The Hall of Fame Buffalo Bill Rodeo is set to kick off its four-night run on Wednesday, June 18, as part of NebraskaLand Days in North Platte. Rodeo board members Justin Thompson and Levi Fisher joined the North Platte Post to preview what fans can expect from one of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s top-tier events.

Now just two weeks away, final preparations are underway for the nationally recognized rodeo, which runs Wednesday, June 18 through Friday, June 21. Fisher said planning is complete and the focus is now on last-minute details at the arena.

“We’ve got contestant lists in, all the pieces are in place — now it’s just about finishing strong,” Fisher said.

A highlight of this year’s rodeo is the return of&nbsp; rodeo clown John Harrison.&nbsp;Harrison just won the "Triple Crown of Rodeo Clowns" at the PRCA Awards Banquet in December for the third year in a row. He won Comedy Act of the Year for the 9th time, Coors Man in the Can for the 8th time and for the third time in his career...Clown of the Year!  Known for his high-energy comedy acts and crowd interaction, Harrison will provide specialty entertainment each night.

“He’s one of the best in the business, and fans are going to see something new every night,” said Thompson. “You can come to all four nights and get a completely different show.”

Organizers also emphasized the rodeo’s top-tier production quality, comparable to what fans see at the National Finals Rodeo. With nightly production meetings, high-end video and audio equipment, and a live broadcast on The Cowboy Channel, the experience is designed to be fast-paced and professional from start to finish.

Veteran Hall of Fame PRCA announcer Randy Corley will return to the crow’s nest this year, joined by Garrison Allen. Corley, the son-in-law of the late Hall of Fame announcer Hadley Barrett, continues a tradition of elite rodeo commentary in North Platte.

Data from responses will be used to better understand how crop share leases are structured across the state and inform new publications.Crop share agreements allow landlords and tenants to share both the risks and rewards of crop production. But the terms of these agreements — how costs and returns are divided — can differ widely depending on region, crop type, land productivity, and local traditions.

“Many leases are still based on verbal agreements or old rules of thumb,” said Anastasia Meyer, extension agricultural economist with the Center for Agricultural Profitability. “We know practices vary, but we don’t have consistent statewide data showing how. This survey is an important step toward helping landowners and producers make better-informed decisions.”

The anonymous survey asks participants — whether landlords or tenants — about lease structures, shared expenses, and other common terms. Results will inform the development of educational materials and tools to support fair and effective lease negotiations across Nebraska.

UNL Seeks Input from Nebraska Ag Landowners and Tenants in New Crop Share Survey

North Platte, Neb. - May 27, 2025 - Raegyn Beachner lives for the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte. The 14-year-old cowgirl, a resident of Hershey,&nbsp; volunteers at the rodeo, carrying sponsor flags during the grand entry of each night of rodeo, and saddling, unsaddling and warming up horses that the rodeo queens ride.&nbsp; Beachner has been helping at the rodeo the past four years, but she's been attending it since she was a baby.

The daughter of Ashley and Tylan Gayman and Levi Beachner, her grandparents, Tom and Shelli Arensdorf, live near Hershey. Raegyn and her family lived near Parsons, Kan., but every summer they would come back to Nebraska for the week of rodeo. Raegyn and her mom moved to Hershey seven years ago.

State rodeo queens from all over the country come to North Platte for the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, and Beachner saddles their horses and warms them up, so they are ready to ride. Marvin Mueller, Sutherland, supplies many of the saddle horses the queens ride.

She's had the chance the last two years to carry a flag on horseback in the grand entry, which is what she loves. She also loves meeting all the queens, including Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Rodeo America, who visit North Platte for the rodeo. "I get to meet a bunch of new queens, and I get to meet the professional rodeo athletes, too," she said.

The sponsor flag staging area is close to where the cowboys and cowgirls warm up their horses, so Beachner has rubbed elbows with big-name barrel racers like world champions Hailey Kinsel and Fallon Taylor and multiple-time National Finals Rodeo qualifiers like Emily Beisel and Stevi HIllman.

Beachner comes from a long line of rodeo volunteers. Her grandma has been on the Buffalo Bill Rodeo committee for twenty years, and competed in high school and professional rodeo as well.&nbsp;"She lives for it," Arensdorf said, of her granddaughter. She loves being around horses. "She will spend hours and hours and hours with the horses, combing, petting, bathing, walking and riding them."&nbsp; &nbsp;"I love having a personal friend," Beachner says. "I talk to them, and they're always there when you need them."&nbsp;

LOVING RODEO: Buffalo Bill Rodeo volunteer loves chance to volunteer at rodeo, work with horses

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte Stockyards Sale Barn hosted its largest Catalog Horse Sale to date on Tuesday, May 27, drawing a full house of buyers and sellers and moving 238 head through the ring.

The top-selling horse of the night fetched $14,750 — a 7-year-old registered gelding known for his ranch experience, gentle disposition and striking grey coat.

A 5-year-old Draft Cross gelding, previously named Horse of the Year on the local ranch rodeo circuit, followed closely at $14,000. Organizers described him as “dog gentle” and well-suited for ranch work or recreational riding.

Horses with arena credentials also proved popular. A 15-year-old palomino gelding trained in team roping sold for $13,250, while a 17-year-old red roan gelding brought in $10,000.

The loose horse market remained strong, with the top loose horse — a shapely palomino gelding — selling for $4,900.

The top five horses averaged $12,300, while the top 10 averaged $10,585.

"This was our biggest sale to date, and demand was strong from start to finish," the Stockyards said in a statement. "We appreciate all of our buyers and sellers who made it such a successful event."

The next Catalog Horse Sale at North Platte Stockyards is scheduled for Tuesday, July 29.

Horse Prices Top $14,000 at Record-Breaking Sale in North Platte

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — One of Lincoln County’s most anticipated annual fundraisers is back. The Grape &amp; Sizzle event, organized by the Lincoln County Cattle Women's Association, will take place Friday, June 6, at Venue 304 in downtown North Platte. The evening combines gourmet food, wine tasting, and lively auctions to raise funds for local nonprofits.

Tracy Olson, president of Grape &amp; Sizzle, and board secretary Amanda White joined the Sandhills Post this week to share details about the event, which has supported Lincoln County for over two decades.

“Our slogan is ‘Beef for a Cause,’ and our mission is to promote the beef industry while giving back to local nonprofits,” Olson said.

This year, three nonprofit recipients were selected through a competitive process:

“We’re thrilled to support organizations doing such meaningful work in our community,” White said.

Guests can expect a gourmet lineup featuring steak and feta salad, sweet and spicy meatballs in puff pastry, Parmesan-rimmed sliders, a cheese and olive station, a dessert bar, and an extensive wine selection.

“Our food and wine offerings are always a hit — people look forward to indulging and enjoying the atmosphere,” White added.

Grape & Sizzle Fundraiser Returns June 6 in North Platte, Supporting Local Nonprofits

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The 2025 University of Nebraska–Lincoln Wheat Variety Tour is making a stop in Grant on June 10, offering farmers and ag professionals a firsthand look at the latest in wheat research and production.

Hosted at the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Research Center, the field day begins at 9 a.m. MDT and is open to the public. The event is part of a statewide tour organized by UNL’s Crop Performance Testing Program in collaboration with university farm managers and researchers.

Attendees will learn about different wheat varieties and gain valuable insight into best management practices, including how to combat diseases and pests. Researchers from the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center will also share updates on ongoing studies, covering topics such as cover crops, western corn rootworm, weed control strategies, and irrigation techniques.

The tour is free to attend, and participants will receive a complimentary lunch with registration. Transportation to field plots will be provided.

The Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Research Center is located just east of Grant. From Highway 61, take Road 761 east for one mile, then turn south on Road 329. The facility is a half-mile south on the east side of the road.

The students were named to the second cohort of the Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program, a competitive initiative launched through a partnership between Gov. Jim Pillen and the university. The program seeks to develop a pipeline of skilled veterinarians committed to serving Nebraska’s livestock producers, particularly in rural communities.

“I’m excited for the futures of these students,” Pillen said in a statement. “They are pursuing a career path that is certainly in high demand. We need skilled veterinarians who can provide advice and services to Nebraska’s livestock producers. Their commitment to working in our rural communities will help ensure food security, now and into the future.”

Twenty Nebraska Students Selected for Competitive Vet Program to Bolster Rural Workforce

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska’s State FFA Convention brought hundreds of FFA students and their advisors from across the state to Lincoln. Each year the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation selects two recipients for their FFA Advisor of the Year award. This award honors FFA advisors for outstanding work in their local communities.

Emilye Yowell from Meridian Public Schools and Ben Robison from Alma Public Schools were honored at the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;State FFA Convention on Thursday, April 3 in Lincoln. The winning advisors received a plaque and a $1,000 donation to their&nbsp;<a href="https://www.morningagclips.com/tag/ffa/">FFA</a>&nbsp;chapter.

The teachers were nominated by their students and chosen based upon their school and community involvement, leadership development in their classroom, and their ability to keep their students involved in agriculture.

“The&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Farm Bureau Foundation is proud to support these exceptional educators. They go above and beyond for their students and the industry they love, and the future of&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;agriculture is bright thanks to their work,” said Megahn Schafer, executive director of the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Farm Bureau Foundation.

Yowell is the FFA Advisor for the Meridian FFA Chapter. Students in Meridian FFA say Yowell is committed to student success. She equips students to try new things and ask big questions. Yowell has led multiple career development teams to state and helped students see the many opportunities FFA and agriculture have to offer.

“I am extremely thankful to be receiving this award and thankful for my wonderful officer team for nominating me. Advisors often put in a lot of work behind the scenes that does not get recognized, and it is a great feeling to know that this does not go unnoticed by my members,” said Yowell.

Robison is the Advisor for the Alma FFA&nbsp;Chapter. Robison prioritizes creating leadership and learning opportunities for students, encouraging them to grow and maximize their potential. Robison knows that Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs) are incredibly valuable to building well-rounded students. That’s why he has students start their SAE project as freshman. Not only does this provide students with the most amount of time to grow in this project but provides them with an opportunity to apply for awards. Students at Alma are thankful for Robison’s commitment to a strong community and growing strong leaders.

Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation Announces 2025 FFA Advisors of the Year

LINCOLN, Neb - A measure originally intended to create uniformity in the feedlot industry under Nebraska law was narrowed before being advanced to final reading May 21.

Under current law, feedlots within a brand inspection area in Nebraska can become registered feedlots and be exempt from brand inspections when shipping cattle to slaughter. Inspection of RFLs is required, however, when cattle enter the feedlot and the Nebraska Brand Committee can conduct regular audits of RFL records at their discretion.

Sumner Sen. Teresa Ibach, sponsor of LB646, said only the western two-thirds of Nebraska is within the brand inspection area, while the eastern one-third of the state has no branding inspection requirements.

As amended on first-round debate, the measure would require a $1,000 fee to operate a registered feedlot in Nebraska and increase the cap on the physical and electronic inspection fee the Brand Committee may charge to $1.50 per head. The measure also would allow for new inspection exemptions for cattle:

• transferred to the care of another individual without transfer of ownership if proof of temporary possession is established;

• being transferred to or from a qualified dairy;

• transferred to an affiliated grow yard from an inspected RFL under certain conditions; and

• transferred from an affiliated grow yard to an RFL under certain conditions.

North Platte Sen. Mike Jacobson offered an amendment on select file that he said was the result of continued negotiations among various stakeholders.

The amendment, which replaces the previous proposal, would increase the cap on the physical and electronic inspection fee the Brand Committee may charge to $1.50 per head, exempt from inspection cattle shipped to or from a qualified dairy and set the feedlot registration fee at 50 cents multiplied by the feedlot’s maximum livestock capacity.

Jacobson said the amendment would cut the current feedlot registration fee in half. The state’s brand inspection system is important to cow/calf producers, he said, and the compromise amendment would ensure that all factions of the industry are treated fairly.

Calling the amendment “a good first step,” Ibach spoke in favor of it. She said further reforms need to happen, but that the proposal would “move the needle” in the right direction.

“I feel like we’ve made some progress,” she said.

Whitman Sen. Tanya Storer also supported the amendment, although with reservations. A vigorous opponent of the measure on the first round of debate, Storer called the negotiation process “frustrating” and said she had “fought like hell” to make sure the integrity of the state’s brand inspection system was maintained for cattle producers.

“This industry is the core — the foundation — certainly of my district, but I believe of the state of Nebraska,” Storer said.

She offered and later withdrew a floor amendment to the Jacobson amendment to replace a mileage reimbursement system with a flat surcharge fee for travel expenses incurred by brand committee members for inspections.

Ibach said the change was not part of the agreement that was reached during negotiations, but she offered a floor amendment with those same provisions that also included a $20 cap on the surcharge.

She said she was willing to do so in order to not derail the bill and “keep talking” about the change before the final round of debate. The Ibach amendment was adopted 36-0.

Following the 37-0 adoption of the Jacobson amendment, senators advanced LB646 to final reading by voice vote.

Beef Quality Assurance Trainings Scheduled in Imperial, North Platte

WASHINGTON — U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. testified before Congress on Tuesday that a major report due out later this week from his agency will not disparage farmers or a commonly used pesticide.

Kennedy, who has long been critical of certain aspects of modern agriculture and processed food, at a U.S. Senate hearing urged lawmakers to read the widely anticipated “Make America Healthy Again” report once it’s published Thursday, but didn’t go into details about any possible recommendations.

“Everybody will see the report,” Kennedy said. “And there’s nobody that has a greater commitment to the American farmer than we do. The MAHA movement collapses if we can’t partner with the American farmer in producing a safe, robust and abundant food supply.”

Cindy Hyde-Smith, who said she had read news reports from “reliable sources” that the MAHA Commission’s initial assessment “may unfairly target American agriculture, modern farming practices and the crop protection tools that roughly 2% of our population relies on to help feed the remaining 98%.”“If Americans lose confidence in the safety and integrity of our food supply due to the unfounded claims that mislead consumers, public health will be at risk,” Hyde-Smith said. “I’ve said this before, and it’s worth saying again, countries have gone to war over many things — politics, religion, race, trade, natural resources, oil, pride, you name it — but threaten a nation’s food supply and allow people to go hungry. Let’s see what happens then.”Hyde-Smith, who was her home state’s commissioner of agriculture and commerce from 2012 to 2018, probed Kennedy about his past work in environmental law and whether he might be inserting “confirmation bias” into the forthcoming report.She asked Kennedy if he would try to change the current approval for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fda.gov/food/pesticides/questions-and-answers-glyphosate" target="_blank">glyphosate</a>, a commonly used herbicide, that she referred to as “one of the most thoroughly studied products of its kind.”“We’re talking about more than 1,500 studies and 50-plus years of review by the EPA and other leading global health authorities that have affirmed its safety when used as directed,” Hyde-Smith said. “Have you been able to review thousands of studies and decades of scientific review in a matter of months?”Kennedy responded that her “information about the report is just simply wrong.”“The drafts that I’ve seen, there is not a single word in them that should worry the American farmer,” Kennedy said.Hyde-Smith continued her questioning and told Kennedy that it would be “a shame if the MAHA commission issues reports suggesting, without substantial facts and evidence, that our government got things terribly wrong when it reviewed a number of crop protection tools and deemed them to be safe.”<h2>Home energy program in Maine</h2>Several other Republicans on the Senate Appropriations Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee raised concerns during the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.c-span.org/program/senate-committee/hhs-secretary-kennedy-testifies-on-2026-budget-request/660137" target="_blank">two-hour hearing</a>&nbsp;about how Kennedy has run HHS&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/rfk-jr-confirmed-nations-health-chief-despite-vaccine-denial-conspiracy-theories" target="_blank">since they confirmed him</a>&nbsp;in February.Maine Sen. Susan Collins, chairwoman of the full Appropriations Committee, brought up the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, which the Trump administration has called on Congress to eliminate.“The LIHEAP program, which we’ve talked about, is absolutely vital for thousands of older Mainers and low-income families,” Collins said. “It helps them avoid the constant worry of having to choose between keeping warm, buying essential foods and medications and other basic necessities.”Kennedy sought to distance himself from the president’s budget request, saying that he understands “the critical, historical importance of this program.”“President (Donald) Trump’s rationale and (the Office of Management and Budget’s) rationale is that President Trump’s energy policies are going to lower the cost of energy … so that everybody will get lower cost heating oil,” Kennedy said.<h2>NIH indirect costs</h2>Subcommittee Chairwoman Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., brought up several issues with Kennedy, including efforts to change how much the National Institutes of Health provides to medical schools and research universities for Facilities and Administrative fees, often called indirect costs.NIH sought to set that amount at 15% across the board for any institution that receives a research grant from the agency, a significantly lower amount than many of the organizations had negotiated over the years, bringing about strong objections from institutions of higher education.That NIH policy has not taken effect as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/trump-administrations-irreparable-cut-nih-research-funds-blocked-judge" target="_blank">several lawsuits work their way through the federal court system.</a>Kennedy indicated NIH has figured out a way to help medical schools and research universities pay for items like gloves, test tubes and mass spectrometers, particularly at state schools.“In the public universities, we are very much aware that those universities are using the money well, that it is absolutely necessary for them. And we’re looking at a series of different ways that we can fund those costs through them,” Kennedy said. “But not through the independent, indirect cost structure, which loses all control, which deprives us of all control of how that money is spent.”Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran, a Republican, brought up the measles outbreak and pressed Kennedy on whether HHS needed additional resources to help his home state and others get the virus under control.Kennedy testified the “best way to prevent the spread of measles is through vaccination” and that HHS has been urging “people to get their MMR vaccines.”<h2>South Dakota grant on mine safety</h2>South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds called on Kennedy to continue fixing issues created earlier this year when HHS fired people working on mine safety issues at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.“My office has learned that staff at NIOSH’s Spokane mining research division have been laid off. This office focuses on the unique challenges of Western mining operations that are often more geologically complex and exposed to harsher conditions,” Rounds said. “This division provides critical technical support for institutions like the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, which recently received a $1.25 million grant to improve underground mining safety. However, the grant has now been canceled due to loss of oversight from the Spokane office.“This is not just a missed opportunity, it undermines our ability to meet national security goals tied to mineral independence and supply chain resilience.”Kennedy testified that he’s been able to bring back 238 workers at the agency and said he would work with Rounds to address ongoing issues.<h2>Pledge to fund Head Start, but no dollar amount</h2>Alabama Sen. Katie Britt, a Republican, asked Kennedy about news reports earlier this year that HHS would ask Congress to zero out funding for Head Start, one of numerous programs left out of the administration’s skinny budget request. Head Start provides early learning, health, family and development programs for free for children from low-income families.Kennedy testified that eliminating Head Start would likely not be in the full budget request, which is set to be released later this year, though the White House budget office has not said when. He said it would ask Congress to fully fund the program, but didn’t share a dollar amount.“There’s 800,000 of the poorest kids in this country who are served by this program. It not only teaches the kids preschool skills — reading, writing and arithmetic — before they get to prepare them for school. But it also teaches the parents and teaches them how to be good parents.”Kennedy said there are challenges faced by the Head Start program that he hopes to change during the next four years, including the quality of the food.“The food they’re serving at Head Start is terrible. You need to change that,” Kennedy said. “We’re poisoning the poorest kids from their youngest years, and we’re going to change that.”
