COWLEY COUNTY - Law enforcement continue investigating an unattended death in Cowley County.
Just after 3:30 p.m. Sunday, police along with fire and EMS were dispatched to the parking lot of Casey’s, located at 219 West 9th Avenue, for a report of an unresponsive individual inside a vehicle, according to a media release from the Winfield Police Department.
First responders found a 56-year-old woman in the driver’s seat who was pronounced deceased at the scene. A dog was also found deceased inside the vehicle. It is believed the dog died as the result of heat exposure inside the vehicle. The vehicle and the individual were from South Dakota.
At this time, there is no evidence of foul play. The incident is being investigated as a possible medical emergency. The Cowley County Coroner was contacted, and an autopsy has been ordered.
Police have not released the name of the woman who died.
